What a thing, and will hopefully garner the attention of a new generation of enthusiasts who will keep these Grp A era Imprezas running when we all retire from them. What's great for the average punter is that 90% of what Meaden said about this car could be applied to a factory GC8 Type RA or R, at 1/20th of the price. Plus you get one of the most tactile manual gearboxes of all time in those. They ride beautifully as well, and are devoid of all the modern driver assist that buffer driver from machine. i've never seen anybody driving a car in a review so obviously being shaken around by the absolute lack of suspension as Meaden! He could hardly speak. I used to own an 03 plate WRX from new, which I had the Subaru garage add the Provide Performance Pack, and since the suspension was too soft the stiffer springs which I didn't know lowered the car too. In addition STi wheels that came off the WR1 when that came in to the country. This combination was excellent. Far better throttle response with less pronounced turbo lag and smoother from off boost and into boost. Road holding with the RE070 tyres was excellent, but the spring kit was just perfect for the local B roads. Better body control, which I was looking for, but able to absorb all the bumps. Yet still a comfortable drive. Probably quite unique combination but it really suited the car and the car really suited the roads around me. I miss that car.
Same! He's in a paint shaker!!! I had a 2005 WRX PPP. I put it on eibach springs and KYB shocks because the OEM upside down dampers were shot, and it handled great and rode like a dream. @@johnsim3722 A WRC car rides smoothly at competition speed, but when driving them at pedestrian speeds the suspension is extremely firm and rough. Basically the faster you hit a bump with a rally suspension the less you notice it

Yes, suspension is like a high pass filter where higher frequencies of bumps are passed through. Faster you go, higher the frequency, the more compliant the suspension becomes. But I can't see anybody taking this car out on a rally stage. I think they've misjudged where the suspension settings should be on this car.
@@johnsim3722 I've spent a fair bit of time in cars fitted with those suspensions. I assure you, they're very unpleasant at/below the speed limit. You're certainly right about the most of the customer base never using the suspension in anger, but at the same time I think not giving it proper rally suspension would've gone against the point of the car: making it as close to an authentic works rally car as possible while still being streetable.
Wow, this is such an interesting and exciting model over latest Subaru Wrxes. Interior and exterior are way better in design than the original too. Prodrive should build the 4 door restomod version too!
Nov '99, I borrowed a standard Mk1 1Turbo for a few days... just like the P25, it was just on rails, on wet cold leaf-covered country lanes. Never driven a car like that since.
Does Dickie actually like the car? He's coming off like a hostage reading a prepared script with a terrorist with an assault rifle no doubt lurking just off screen.
If you feel the weight of both the plastic and glass headlights, the plastic are half the weight, so they might’ve done it for weight reduction, since all the panels are carbon too. But I would give a little more weight to keep the eyes and soul of the gc8
I recall marshalling on Rally GB in 2000 and seeing these cars on full chat over the Halfway stage and on other stages. It was Petter Solberg, Juha Kankkunen and Richard Burns who were driving for the works team. I guess the suspension is a bit stiff as it seems to be making you sound like Audrey Hepburn in her later years.
So curious how it compares to the MCC Maturo integrale, which seems designed to deliver such similar capabilities (rally car experience to the road, 400hp,AWD, 90s styling) at a comparable price tag. Trust it to be a great experience testing both as well ;-)
HALF A MILLION QUID?????? In a hot second, if I had the money. A big thank you for this vid and the article in issue 313 every continued success gentlemen.
Great to see Dickie review something again; the car seems surprisingly quiet from the inside, but you can also see the car is fidgeting about a surprising amount over the bumps on that B-road even at a reasonable sedate pace..!
Amazing car, slightly (for now) out of my budget but I imagine it must be bollocks to drive ! You guys at EVO should consider an all GrA rally car test (like in the old days with the numerous Impreza and Eco road tests....). But for this one you should take all the eye watering expensive but magnificent remakes. The P25 ,Best Impreza, Maturo Lancia Delta, Redux M3 to name a few, there are more out there....and compare them with their (OEM) grandfathers.... Should be an intresting test.

It was very common (maybe still is?) in WRC cars of a certain era. I don't know the reason, but I think it's because the driver needs to have the other hand free for the hand break
@@IRBucephalus Spot on about it being the norm in the WRC, though they're no longer part of the current generation of cars. It has nothing to do with the handbrake though, the paddle and the handbrake are on the same side in the LHD WRC cars, so both use the same hand
Scania lorries use a single paddle like this, i always felt it was the best system on lorries (for changing gear, the actual Volvo gearbox is better) and i saw it on a video of a wrc i car and since then I've always wondered why cars don't use this system since it works so well.
The stuttering of your voice throughout sounds like your going over small speed bumps every other second! The only time you sound normal is when your NOT driving it, I thought I had audio issues on my laptop! Those must be some solid springs and dampers! Sorry not slating you buddy, nice review 😀
I'm all in when it comes to pure, analogue driving experience, but no brake assist and no abs seems a bit murderous in a car that has 400 bhp and 600 Nm of torque. Also, I fail to understand how those systems interfere with the driving experience.
No brake booster or ABS is true to how a rally car is setup. With the proper driver skill you can be a huge amount quicker and gain more control of the car without them. With no brake booster the braking force is linear and completely in relation to the force you exert, and not having ABS to lengthen your brake distances is very helpful. It would be a fun car for sure with a conventional setup but the way they have done it really allows you to drive to the limit

I guess the suspension is a bit stiff as it seems to be making you sound like Audrey Hepburn in her later years.
It appears to be quite a bumpy ride.
It sounds like he's giving his commentary whilst sat on a washing machine!
It's not built for comfort
Fantastic review thanks Richard
That front end lets it down massively. The original looked amazing. Some bit of kit though.
Hilarious wobbly voice Dicky!
So curious how it compares to the MCC Maturo integrale, which seems designed to deliver such similar capabilities (rally car experience to the road, 400hp,AWD, 90s styling) at a comparable price tag. Trust it to be a great experience testing both as well ;-)
"if in doubt, flat out" great video.
Great video to watch. Thank you
This was a fantastic production. So much want for this car.
HALF A MILLION QUID?????? In a hot second, if I had the money. A big thank you for this vid and the article in issue 313 every continued success gentlemen.
Analogue is perfectly fine with me ❤️
Dear God this car 😍😍😍
Great to see Dickie review something again; the car seems surprisingly quiet from the inside, but you can also see the car is fidgeting about a surprising amount over the bumps on that B-road even at a reasonable sedate pace..!
It seems bumpy. You can hear it in Dickie Meaden's voice
Excellent review for a remarkable car ….. let’s not forget the contribution Richard Burns made to this icon also.
Whoever did the carbon fibre bodywork really did a fantastic job, very tasty!
500k for a low level tuner headlights look... not bad prodrive... suspensions looks stiff as hell. Even his voice is vibrating
I noticed that as well. You can hear his voice vibrating with the harsh ride. half a million bucks for a tuner suby? Just nuts.
Yeah who's idea was the eBay lighting?
Looks awful
Genuine parts is the way to go
@@ArtVandelayOfficialin the magazine article they mention some top boyo drive the car home and was so upset with the lights they designed new brighter ones but they had to conform to all the new EU regulations. Bit more work than some ebay projectors
A single shift paddle? That’s the first I’ve heard of such an application in a road car. And what a car it is too! Excellent 😁👍
What if you have no hands
@@styleemusic then your name is Bartosz Ostalowski and you're a better driver than all of us combined
Scania lorries use a single paddle like this, i always felt it was the best system on lorries (for changing gear, the actual Volvo gearbox is better) and i saw it on a video of a wrc i car and since then I've always wondered why cars don't use this system since it works so well.
Wicked machine. The most exciting in a long time.
The microphone you’re using is incredible.
I must build an attachment to my dream car garage. THAT will be in there!
Absolute dream of a car and instantly recognised the road.. (A708 Moffat to Selkirk for anyone curious)
@@mitch_gf8 I understand your point of view, but that means this car is for somebody who has the driving skill of Ari Vatanen, and the bank account of Bill Gates. I'm not sure such a person exists.
@@georgezoraya1057a toyobaru in the same way the gt/r86/brz.
They could use the awd platform, engine, transmision and other bits from gry/corolla gr and make a new 22b/celica gt4. throw in a mild hybrid something to keep up with the current regs, make it 50k and it would effin sell like hot cake.
Personally I think this car should have a manual transmission. It’s not truly ‘analogue’ unless you can feel the gearbox.
It is a manual gearbox. It's a dogbox with helical gears which is a rare setup bcuz dogboxes are typically used with straight cut gears.
I agree it should come with an optional manual as it does with roll cage
@@jamilahmed979Yes, but it’s obvious what he means. He means an H-pattern. I’m inclined to agree with him, but then also understand the paddle from the ‘rally pedigree’ perspective - tough one🤔
@Thou1 yes, but that type of gear box is for making times, not for enjoy driving experience. If they want a fast car there it's no sense to take out the abs or other electronic systems.
@@jamilahmed979it’s still not really a sequential gear box like a rally car most rally cars have an actual shifter that you can pull back to shift and is not just electronically controlled even the ones that are paddle shifters usually have a big linkage with an air shifter which feels quite different to that electronically controlled paddle shifter the way prodrive has done it is in no way analog
What a dream! The car, and ability of the owners to have 500k to spend on this.
The ultimate car for driver enjoyment on the shockingly bad British roads. Sad that most of them won't be used to their potential.
Im no imprezza fan but.. that is such a good looking car
Interesting review, but I'm not really feeling any wiser as to what it's actually like to drive. It sounds very quiet in there as well, and certainly doesn't sound like I'd expect an Impreza to.
Sound is way off in the video, they messed something up.
I bet it has a equal length header instead of the inefficient but rumbly unequal as the stock GC8s have.
@@bingoberra18 Yes, I'd agree there.
Gorgeous car and a top notch review - thank you. Does anyone know those roads? They look amazing.
Shame Prodrive couldn't offer something around the 60k mark. Another great vlog from Evo mag
It's not profitable for them.
Great job Dickie
What B road was this segment filmed on? Awesome scenery
What are the brand/model of these bucket seats? Are they Recaro?
thanks Dickie!
The car looks sensational!!!!!
For: that flat-4 warble and sublime chassis
Against: those mirrors and that Subaru image
Summary: you can’t have one anyway, so it doesn’t matter
Good video. Question - why was the presenter audo so shaky? Was he okay? Maybe just an encoding thing.
Damn that was good to watch!!!
Wild to think that this is one of the most exciting, rally car recreations ever made, and Dickie sounds about as excited as he would be if he was talking about his new microwave lololol
Doesn't it look like a smaller set of rims would work better here ?
you can tell the suspension is stiff because his voice is so shaky. I have a special connection to this era of impreza. My first car was a 2000 subaru impreza 2.5 RS and although it wasnt boosted because they didnt sell turbo models in the states at the time, it was fun to drive. It was fun to drive such a light all wheel drive car but I ended up upgrading to a '13 audi s4 and I've never looked back!
Oh my lawd... that's some sex right there. I hope Bucky Lasek paints his Buckit one day, as he has a lot of sweet body parts and rally accessories on his impreza. If any of you haven't seen the build of it, go check it out!
I would’ve liked to hear more car sound, but I appreciate the host’s calm quiet delivery. Refreshing compared to full blown “i’ve had 4 redbulls, shouting over the car” styles.
22b was beautiful
Where os the road that this was filmed on?
