    Dang man! Sweet project.
    I would just recommend always disconnecting the battery first, before anything else. (And plugging it in last) probably not a big deal. But better safe than sorry. Phones are expensive.

      I used aluminum foil (actually folded onto itself, shiny side facing inward). It worked pretty good, that's still what's in my PS3 between the heatsink and CPU, nice and queit.
      At the time I didn't have thermal paste. It had been overheating, but this fixed it. The idea was similar to copper shims, but with what I had in the kitchen.

    I never understood the logic behind the CPU power/speed wars on mobile phones...
    What's the point of having flagship phones that throttle down to the speed of regular phones within a few minutes of load/gaming due to overheating? Are we going to see fans strapped to our smartphones in the future? Why not just make something that performs efficiently and sustainably, but still fast?
    The smartphone industry should have a main focus on efficiency and battery life instead, since we already have enough processing power on them to do pretty much anything you'd want on a phone anyway. Pure speed shouldn't come before efficiency in this case.

    • @Kombat_Wombat
      @Kombat_Wombat 6 ปีที่แล้ว +109

      Exactly. Who the hell games on a phone anyway?

    • @misomalu
      @misomalu 6 ปีที่แล้ว +123

      I think there are some things you aren’t understanding about this. While you may not feel like the extra performance matters because you aren’t gaming, it does make a huge difference to app launch times, app switch times, background processes, and internal OS optimization. When it comes to phones not performing “consistently and sustainably”, it doesn’t matter to most users, that short burst of unsustainable speed means that the tasks I listed above (which tend to be much more computationally intensive) perform more quickly. Also, what you’re asking for is already being done, processors are more power efficient and run cooler, they just boost their clock speeds when necessary - they would reach the same thermal thrilling temperature at a lower speed over a slightly longer period of time anyways.

    • @GENKI_INU
      @GENKI_INU 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      I like to talk about the more extreme cases of throttling which are quite prevalent, because I feel like there isn't enough thermal or battery life headroom right now since everyone is so tunnel-visioned on performance. Especially considering that just using the camera/recording video or charging the phone while using it greatly increases temperatures and throttling in addition to the possibility of high ambient air temperature in some environments.
      The throttling and unsustainability of "high performance" just seems wasted and pointless on everything that isn't a brief workload, and in a way is a kind of false advertisement. Overheating seems excessive these in recent years to the point where it actually somewhat outweighs the pros of the intended design considerations of speeding up already fairly short tasks. Just look at what happened with the Snapdragon 820/810.

    I did more reading about this stuff since I'm interested in using LM for my own laptop, and it seems corrosion is not out of the norm.
    Typically when LM is used under the IHS of a desktop CPU (often necessary for intel chips since they bond the IHS to silicon with toothpaste instead of solder) the results are pretty good even after a year. The IHS (which is made out of copper, then nickel plated) does get stained by the LM but nowhere near what happened to you. This is because your contact (in a laptop) is silicon die LM copper heatsink. In the desktop scenario, LM is often applied underneath the IHS so the contact is silicon die LM nickel plating copper.
    To be even more clear, the key differences in your application of LM is that
    1. Your application was silicon-copper instead of being silicon-nickel as you would find in the 'delidding' of a desktop CPU
    2. Your application was not insulated against air (read: oxygen)
    1 is important because the electrode potential of gallium is -0.53V, nickel -0.24V, and copper +0.34V. Obviously, all liquid metals are made out of gallium (because Ga is liquid at room temp, and is also nontoxic unlike mercury) plus small percentages of other metals to reduce the melting point. When gallium is in contact with pure copper, the differences in electrode potential favors the gallium and copper to alloy, which will eventually consume the gallium completely[1] (Ga + Cu → CuGa2 [67%] + Cu3Ga [11%], and both products are stable until 175C)[1][2].
    The liquid metal will literally into the copper until the gallium is gone, which causes the copper to turn silver-ish. The non-gallium components (indium, tin) of the liquid metal[3], which are solid at room temperature, get left behind - and that stuff is hardened deposit that you were trying to scrub off the heatsink.
    Note that at higher temperatures, the reaction between gallium and the copper heatsink only gets faster.
    2 is important because the gallium based LM components can and do oxidize. This is the reason why people generally recommend sealing your contact as much as possible. With a desktop chip under an IHS that's already halfway taken care of by the IHS itself, so if you've never seen a liquid metal tutorial for a laptop you might have not even known that sealing the LM was important. I'm not making this stuff up, gallium begins to oxidize at 25C and fully oxidizes at 75C[2] (Ga2O3, mass fraction 0.12) which is a totally achievable temperature range. This is not even considering the fact that the other components on the LM can oxidize, and they likely will.
    Other interesting things to note:
    1. The thermal conductivity of CuGa2 (the principal alloy of gallium and copper) at 20C is 98 W/(m⋅K). Copper's thermal conductivity at 20C is 400 W/(m⋅K).
    2. We have no idea what exactly is in LM, the formulations are proprietary - but it's been said that the consistencies of Coolaboratory CLU & grizzly conductonaut are not the same so clearly whatever is in this stuff varies and lead to different results.
    3. Simply buffing the residue off the copper heatsink and reapplying the LM might be OK. The GaCu alloy is obviously not as good of a heat conductor as pure copper but it's not clear how deep the gallium will attack. If eventually you keep reapplying LM and the gallium can't penetrate its own pitting then it's effectively self-limiting and you end up with a 'stable' LM application.
    These papers are interesting if you want to learn more about the process:
    1. www.ipme.ru/e-journals/RAMS/no_81808/grigoryeva.pdf
    2. sci-hub.ac/www.scientific.net/DDF.326-328.227
    3. forum.notebookreview.com/threads/something-to-think-about-liquid-metal-compatibility-with-copper-heat-sinks.800890/
    TL;DR
    Liquid metal pastes react with copper heatsinks (aggravated by oxidation and higher temperatures) until the gallium in the paste is totally absorbed by the copper heatsink and you end up in thermal runaway. The damage to the copper is permanent, but if you keep reapplying the LM whenever this happens you may end up with a stable LM application. LM is much more stable when used under the heatspreader of a desktop CPU, since the heatspreader is nickle-plated and way less reactive to the LM.

    These huge performance gains on everything really makes you wonder why manufactures don't design their products to use stuff like this. It couldn't add that much to the cost of an item to use good thermal paste.

    • @Friemelkubus
      @Friemelkubus 6 ปีที่แล้ว +17

      Shit goes wrong. If you short circuit that could be dangerous. If failure rate becomes too high you've just destroyed your reputation.

    • @AboboKing
      @AboboKing 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      That could be designed to be avoided. Even going as far as a gasket seal around the CPU if needed. It seems like even if the manufactures didn't want to max out performance they could use it to cut back on the heatsink size because it would be better utilized allowing smaller or lighter designes.

    • @empiregeof
      @empiregeof 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      If you max out everything from the getgo there's no room for improvement, so there's no reason to make a better version, missing out a lot of money.
      + if you make a product that will cost you more to produce, it will cost the costumer more to purchase it aswell, its all about finding that balance between overpriced trash and decent enough quality for a fair price.

    • @Mungle84884

      The average user probably isn't going to notice, so it's not worth using. I mean, realize, most people buying a laptop or phone or whatever aren't using it for gaming. They're using them as expensive Facebook or Netflix machines or maybe to run a word processor. This stuff is in the neighborhood of 30-40 bucks a tube and manufacturers just aren't going to spring for it when most of their customers won't care. Maybe for high-end gaming laptops I could see it, but not for what most people are buying.

    • @prairiepanda
      @prairiepanda 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Liquid metal also doesn't last as long as traditional thermal paste. A machine using liquid metal is likely to need it replaced multiple times within its working lifespan, which isn't a big deal for the technically-inclined who built their computers from scratch anyway, but would be a major problem for the typical consumer, as well as a logistical problem for the manufacturer who would have to provide such a service

    Placing a decent fan inside the phone would work much better than liquid metal. You know those tiny cute fans used for small projects. If we could have one of the smallest fans we could place it inside. But we would have to reconstruct back case with a 3d printer. I would like to do this and see the results. Cooling fan inside a getting very hot smartphone would be a good idea.

    Why would I need to open up my phone to put on some liquid metal, when I can just put my phone in the fridge or freezer for 1 minute to cool it down? That's how I do it lol.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      For benchmarks, we've put my cousin's phone in a glass of water (its waterproof) and you could do this on the go, but running it in the freezer did allow it to turbo slightly higher. I personally have my own water cooled 7in tablet (Fallout 4 theme, radiation barrel reservoir with pump inside going through clear hose filled with green "radioactive" anti-freeze and then to rusty steel pipes as the radiator like you would see in a nuclear plant). It looks pretty awesome, while being 40c colder than stock with a 44% overclock.
      Its on Thingiverse if you search "penny waterblock", which is a hint to how I developed my own waterblock specifically for small devices such as this.

    • @kennethbouchard8643
      @kennethbouchard8643 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Bad idea. Cold creates moisture, so freezing your phone may eventually cause corrosion inside it. Electronics like to remain at a stable temperature. Rapid cooling and heating result in early failures. But I suppose given the life of a cell phone can be from hours to years, based on where and how you use it, probably make no difference.

    • @jakegarrett8109
      @jakegarrett8109 6 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      "Cold creates moisture", and by that incorrect statement, temperature creates matter, which is energy based off of M=mC^2, which is based off the speed of light, which means we can turn back time by flying around the sun faster than light because Superman...
      I'll try to clear up something, the temperature does not "create" moisture. How does condensation happen? Its cold relative to the AMBIENT. I don't care if its -100c in the room, that's then AMBIENT. For it to condense, the item would have to be colder than -100c in that case. If its 2 million C in the room, it just has to be below 2 million C.
      The phone will be hot relative to its surroundings, because its putting out power and heat. The problem you have to worry about is taking it out of the fridge quickly and putting it into a warmer room (because now its colder than the room), slow transitions are key here.

    • @SaladFingers_
      @SaladFingers_ 6 ปีที่แล้ว

      Jake Garrett
      Well said. Also even if there's any condensation it probably still won't be a problem since modern water resistant or water proof phones have all of their hardware coated with non-conductive material and the water wouldn't be able to short anything.

    • @kennethbouchard8643
      @kennethbouchard8643 6 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Keep doing that and discover that condensation forms when taking the phone from cold to hot. End result phone failure.
