  • On this episode of Make It Kustom, we build a press form step-by-step to emboss or stamp a Chevy emblem into sheet metal without warping. Sheet metal stamping is a great way to make a complex bead or shape for a patch panel too!

      @@MakeItKustom I'm just jealous that your lucky enough to get paid to do this stuff for a living. I love your work and that you use handtools cause you realise that's what most of us have at home. I've done a lot of custom work on my 4wd, and even though I regret starting it cause it's still going 10yrs later it's been able to say it's mine and I did it is the cool part.

    100% good enough 🤣But on a serious note it is good to see some who will not only use basic tools but show how to do it and yes thinking out side the box . So many times we put off doing something because we do not have the special tools required for it I myself have been guilty of this as are many of us . You have a gift for teaching with your down to earth explanations be it online but I am sure if you offered classes to teach metal forming you would get people who would want your classes. As I mentioned in another post I did a back to back classes with Lazze he is a very good teacher and even though it would piss me off as how he made it look so easy 😁but I have much respect for him and I am sure you would be a very good teacher in a class situation you have a wealth of knowledge to impart on those willing to learn

    My Grandfather was a master craftsmen tool and die maker.
    He told me that a file only cuts in one direction. Don’t drag the file across the metal when pulling back. It just dulls the file faster.
    Hard to remember to do that sometimes but I notice it actually works better as well.

    • @daos3300
      @daos3300 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      yes! the exception is ally, then you drag the file to clear the chips out

    • @stephenzwemer2905
      @stephenzwemer2905 2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      @@daos3300 Good point
      I left out the part where my grandfather would tap the file gently on the edge of a non critical part to clear the chips. He was very particular and his work reflected that.
      I’m sure that gently pulling the file backwards would also do the job without damaging anything.
      I’m sure all the above is relative to the material being worked and the force applied. Gentle is a subjective term.

    Great topic - you were commenting about using press forming for body work, while not exactly the same but (to me!) very closely related tip: I saw an advanced restoration pro save a '67 Shelby GT500 with what I thought was a novel use of press forming, the car had severe impact damage on the driver's rear quarter (normally one would cut off and replace the whole side of teh car) however what the pro chose to do was to order a new rear quarter panel section and then fill it with very hard concrete, to make a concrete form/plug exactly in the positive shape as the OE panel, and he then used that from inside the trunk with porta-power to gently press and work the original sheet metal back into form (along with hammering, shrinking, etc) and was able to preserve the original date-coded sheet metal of the car to avoid devaluing it. Love your work, look forward to every video! - Steve.

    When I was a Maintenance man in a ball bearing plant a tool maker taught me how to press form. We cut out a FORD script and pressed it in a 1in. thick hard rubber piece. Man it made the part like you did with 1/2 the effort. Good luck

    I love that you work so hard to do things with tools anyone might have. But still, there ain't no way in hell mine would look like that. Some serious talent with a grinder you got.

    A month late on this one...but I think I have found a bit of a gem of a channel here. Someone who actually teaches some stuff...and always forgets to plug in his tools..that's me also...These fabrication tutorials are 'on point' and completely relevant to those who struggle at home...CHEERS!!

    That turned out great. It's all trial and error until it's perfect. Maybe stretch 2 layers of a shop rag tightly over the chisel to keep from marring with tool marks. Keep the videos coming!
