Watching Arcane as an artist is so difficult, it looks so damn good that it's distracting! I found myself paying more attention to the rendering etc and missing what was going on lol I was hoping someone could make a video about the painting techniques, so THANK YOU!
oooo i feel this so much. I cannot watch both the story and the artsyle at the same time, sometimes i end up rewatching some parts to see the other one two, or just to take screenshots of the absolutely beautiful scenes they have
@@annaszamborovszky8567 Every frame is an eyegasm. I'm just astonished the whole time watching, it's like 10-20 years ahead of where animation should be.
@@k0micazi yeah it really is masterclass of animation, 3D and 2D. It is pretty crazy to see that the show is animated in Maya and then all the textures and background elements are hand painted, as well as vfx. It is a great blend of classic principles with modern techniques.
I was very motivated by your work here; it's very informative and helps a lot of aspiring and professional artists. A few years ago, I used to draw frequently and had my whole setup. But college kept me very busy, I bought a display tablet and am now getting back into drawing. Back then, I could spend 10 to 15 hours drawing nonstop, but now I’m so out of practice and impatient, haha. but with practice, I’ll get there again. I have good line art techniques, but I’ve lost a lot of my rendering skills. Once again, I’d like to thank you so much for your video. You are very talented.
holy crap thats crazy good! ive got some questions: -did you eyedrop a lot of the colors from the screenshot or did you try to eye match them? -what brushes did you use? -how many hours did you spend on this?
I did a mix of both! I tried to eye-match some colors to practice color observation, but I also used the eyedropper tool to check for accuracy and see if I got it right :) For brushes, I mainly used a standard round brush and a softer-edged brush from Ross Draws' Graduation Pack tutorial. As for how many hours it took, I can’t say exactly, but I’d estimate around 20-ish
This is actually so impressive. You're amazing, and yeah, this motivated me to try and do the same study (with my girl Vi tho hehe). Glad I found your channel!
I'm a beginner artist from Thailand, and I absolutely love your videos! They're so inspiring and bring me so much joy. Please keep creating more amazing content-I've already followed you!❤❤❤
Great video! I can tell you put a lot of effort into this, and I really appreciate it. I hope you don’t mind me saying this, but I had a little trouble keeping up because of how quickly you were speaking. I even turned my volume all the way up to catch everything, but it was still a bit hard for me to follow. Maybe slowing down just a tiny bit could help viewers like me fully enjoy and take in all the great things you’re sharing. Just thought I’d mention it. Keep up the awesome work!
For this piece, I noticed that when deepening skin's shadows, I used more desaturated colors (at least compared to what I usually choose), often in the gray range, which helps create smoother transitions between colors. On the other hand, the hair had more vibrant hues which makes it really pop against the more neutral skin tones
Very cool video and great work on the rendering! :) I will try this myself soon. And, I wil try to choose the colors by sight, no color picking. I noticed that actually seeing the colors infront of me will bring me the most understanding for my own future work, to implement better ambience and mood into my paintings. Have a great day!
Thank you so much! Yeah, choosing colors by sight is such a valuable skill and really helps with understanding light and mood. Wishing you the best with your practice, and I hope it goes well :)
The first thing I did after watching the first season was learning the art style by copying some stuff 1:1 !!! It's my favorite art style and animation style in the world. You can really learn the lot from the lighting, coloring, the clear face anatomy
Thank you! For this piece I mainly used a standard round brush from Anthony Jones' brush pack (pretty much the same as the default Photoshop one) and another one with softer edged from Ross Draws' Graduation Pack tutorial :)
I mainly used a standard round brush, along with another one with softer edges from Ross Draws' Graduation Pack tutorial. As for tips, I’d recommend experimenting with different settings and pressure to see what works best for you :)
@juliejoyart thank you so much! I'm having so much trouble working on the different tones of color and how to mix them up together. Hope you make a future video explaining how you do it and how is your Photoshop preset's organized. Would love to see your method 😊
I was learning drawing with a pen tablet on Photoshop. I'm good with sketching but having a hard time colouring with brushes. Can you share your brushes 😇
Yeah coloring takes time, but you’ll get the hang of it over time :) For this piece, I mostly used a standard round brush from Anthony Jones' brush pack (it’s pretty much the same as the default Photoshop one) and another one from Ross Draws' Graduation Pack tutorial.
@@juliejoyart thanks! i am a beginner and don't know if i should get a 16 inch one or 22. could i have some advice? if i want to draw in a bigger canvas for example some landscape would i benefit more from bigger tablet? are smaller ones better for portraits for example?
I bought the 16 inch mainly because it was one of the cheapest Cintiq at the time. But if budget isn’t an issue, I’d suggest going for the larger model. Having extra space is always helpful, especially since panels like brushes, layers, and other tools take up room on the canvas :)
Merci pour ta analyse, c'est três instructive About this series, what a beautiful art, and it's refreshing to watch so many female charismas being explored in actually strong characters, instead of men-hating feminists I felt the dramatic posings in the 2nd season got a little too much mojo, but it's still fun and involving
I've been trying as well to study the art style, it's so beautiful. It's really hard though as I'm not really sure what brushes to use at what point ^^; Like it's hard for me to find the right balance between an area that needs blending and an area that needs sharper edges without making it look too smooth or too harsh. But that's why we practice I guess
Thank you! For this style, I actually think a soft brush might not be the best choice because of the many defined edges. I mostly used a standard round brush to better capture the look :)
For this piece I mostly used a standard round brush from Anthony Jones' brush pack (pretty much the same as the default Photoshop one) and another one from Ross Draws' Graduation Pack tutorial :)
I mainly used two brushes: one is a standard round brush (I used one from Anthony Jones' brush package, but it's almost identical to the default Photoshop brush). The other is from the Graduation Pack tutorial by Ross Draws :)
And what is the point of this copying? What does the artist learn during such a frame redrawing? Perhaps this was said in the video, but I don’t understand English well, sorry. :"( So I would be very grateful if you wrote the answer to this question in text. It’s just that in my country any copying of anything is very strictly condemned, and even more so putting it on public display. Therefore, I am interested in the views of foreign artists on the topic of redrawing frames from any cartoons. (Sorry if the text sounds crooked. Google Translate helped me write it. I hope that the essence of my question remained clear). Good luck in your creative journey!♥
Don't worry, I think I get what you're saying :) For me, the main purpose of copying is to practice and learn. Even though it might look like I'm just copying on the surface, I'm actually deeply analyzing what I’m seeing. It's a way for me to improve my skills and develop a deeper understanding of this art form. With this particular piece, I focused on improving my brush control and rendering. Lately, I’ve been struggling with brush control, and this study has really helped me practice that :) Right now, I’m in a phase of my art journey where I really want to level up my skills. I’m not just doing copies, though: this is just one of many ways I practice. I’ll also be sharing more personal work in the future :) As a disclamer, I’m not claiming the original work as my own, nor am I selling it. This kind of practice is simply a valuable learning tool for me, not an attempt to steal or disrespect the original work. I hope this helps clarify things, and thanks for asking! Best of luck with your art journey as well! ;)
I feel like my brush control has improved, which is something I’ve been focusing on. While copying alone isn’t enough, I think 1:1 studies like this can be valuable and fun every now and then :)
I think there’s a lot to learn from both 2D and 3D! The show draws a lot of inspiration from 2D techniques and it's such a great example of how the two can blend seamlessly :)
I like replicating artwork because it’s a great way for me to absorb the information. I’m not just copying mindlessly: trying to recreate something helps me really understand it :) But you’re right, just copying isn’t enough. It’s also important to apply what we learn to our own work, and that’s exactly what I’ll be doing in my next video. Stay tuned! ;)
This is a mostly a color study, not an anatomy or artstyle study. Why focus on trying to get the Stylization of the anatomy when she was mostly focusing on the colors?
