- Miraculous may not be the perfect show, but man is it charming. But there's one problem that seems to hurt the show from a writing standpoint that deserves an explanation. Why is it that nobody can figure out that Marinette and Adrien are Ladybug and Cat Noir respectively? Could there be a canonical reason for this? Let's talk about it.

The sailor scouts always knew who each other were, as do some of the villains, some people did have suspicions about usagi-chan but it still kinda bugs me that most people didnt know
I believe it was stated in Sailor Moon that all the sailor scouts have a form of glamor which allows them to not be noticed for who they are.
I like how no one can recognise Marinett as Ladybug but everyone can instantly recognise someone else when they’ve beeen acumatised
ikr?? it's even more annoying when you take into account how so many of them, when akumatised, look _completely_ different. Like, Juleka and Reflekta for example. Had I not known in advance, I would have struggled to match the eye colour and height for quite a bit. Arguably, "akuma magic" isn't necessarily the same as kwami transformation magic, but still.
IKR like when people get akumatised they are look like different people but when chat noir and ladybug change no one knows who they are so confusing

Alya actually did make the resemblance between Adrien and Cat Noir during an episode which was shot down by Marinette for some odd reason. Alya even drew on a picture of Adrien to make him look pretty much like his Cat Noir self, and Marinette still said there was no way they were the same person. I think a lot of the people just don't think the people they are friends with or go to school with could be Ladybug and Cat Noir, so they just don't make the connections. Especially with Chloe's case, she can't stand Marinette, and she adores Ladybug. It would kinda make sense how she wouldn't believe that Marinette could possibly be Ladybug because of how much she dislikes her. Then, with Alya, she probably thinks Marinette would tell her, so there wasn't any way Marinette would keep that much of a secret from her which causes her not to think about it on that standpoint.

@SimplySuad, Episode named lady WiFi, at the very end. Also, “spoiler alert” Marinette ends up telling Alya that she’s lady bug in episode 3 season 4. The eponymous is only available in the French version, but there are subtitles. You can see the episode for yourself on TH-cam by searching up “ miraculous ladybug s4 episode 3 “ in the search tab.

Magic does seem to be the best answer. Remember the ladywifi episode? Ladywifi tried to pull off ladybug's mask but couldn't. Ladybug claimed it because of "magic". The masks could have a cloaking magic to them so that no one will figure out the miraculous holder. It would be the most logical, because wouldn't it be best that the identity of a miraculous user be hidden from enemies? Magic like is the best option I swear

I was going to point that out, but it seemed like more of a tease to Marinette rather than an actual suggestion
it might be because little kids who stumble upon the show may be confused why the main characters aren't there any more. it's easier to understand if they look the same when they are superheroes. we hear their individual thoughts and noone else does. we see it through their eyes, so they are more recognizable through the screen because of the narration type.
i agree. it's for the kids sake. in universe they probably look nothing alike.
In the Kaito Jeanne series brown haired Maron transformed into Jeanne with long blonde hair, purple eyes and no one was bothered.
people need to give kids more credit lmao. as long as you see the transformation for each character at least once, it's fine. Viewers knew who Ben 10 was, even though he had plenty of different forms to change into.
i agree kids are smarter than what is assumed. but this show is also good for pre-scholar level kids and above. i still think the show did it for the kids even though it's not absolutely necessary.

Literally, from the moment I started to watch this show, I simply thought that the magic of their Kwami's/costume or magic in general just prevents others from connecting the obvious. I've always assumed it was sort of like Harry Potter's notice-me-not charm (causes people to ignore the caster; in this case, the charm make the obvious unnoticeable), so their identity would remain a secret. I have no idea when I started to think like this, but it always made sense to me rather than just assuming that they are idiots (which they can be sometimes).
Shiro Nakamura My thoughts exactly! And speaking of 'charms', Marinette is most definitely associated with them. That would explain why Chat looks different from his civilian counterpart and how Ladybug doesn't. Surely, his ring could have the same magic properties doing the same for him but in Ladybug's case, she's already, technically, her own magical lucky CHARM, allowing her to go unnoticed.

Actually I took my glasses of and went to school and people kept thinking I was a new student.
I once had a friend during secondary school (British schools), who had taken it upon themselves to dye their hair and change something about their physical appearance for a month. Not really noticeable up close, but it worked.
Their friends kept thinking there was a bunch of students who were being swapped between classes, until May 1st. (Yup, they started on April 1st, and did it for a month!) Once they came in looking normal, they faked being out of the loop of the new people, stating that they only saw them in the toilet stalls.
... I figured it out quickly, as I knew their behaviour too well (I'm a decent body language analyser), but I said to them the next day - wear my glasses during lunch. So I went off to order my lunch, he got his lunch, but because of my looks, I kept being given his name, while he got mine!! we had a good laugh the next day when he told everyone in registration!

They explained this already. It IS kwami magic. Kwami cannot be seen by regular people, when the heroes transform they FUSE with their Kwami, I.E. they are semi-unseeable to normal people and probably only a bit more see-able to each other. Like when you see an illusion picture, yes it looks like an old hag, but it also looks like a young women, and its screwing with your puny human brain. Muahahaha lol
demonheart13 While I do agree with you that it is Keanu magic that makes it so people can tell who they are, it is untrue what you said about regular people not being able to see Kwami’s. In an episode (I think it was Princess Fragrance S.1 Ep.1) where it shows that regular people can in fact see Kwamis (There is another episode that says that Kwamis can’t be seen in pictures but that is way different then actually being able to see them)
The show already states that the miracoulous were created for the specific puprose of allowing normal people to see Kwami. Chloe picked up Till I in princess fragrance, but Chloe is a future hero so she should already be able to see Kwami or else she could not see her own. Aslo Tikki was sick so that may have helped Chloe see her although she is not Chloes Kwami.
Kay, let me address some questions about kwami not being invisible.
1. usually when you have spirit creatures, if anyone can see them, it's children. Often to their parents confusion.
2. I've seen many shows where invisible creatures will still hide from normal humans because they can still interact with the physical world, it's freaking humans out if they accidentally touch something they don't see. Also, because the invisible creatures are small, they could get accidentally hurt or even killed.

And 3, this show isn't Steven Universe, Star Butterfly, Adventure Time, Gravity Falls, or MLP. There is a running Mystery true, but it's pretty obvious by the amount of general inconsistencies that small details and even large pieces of lore aren't being scrutinized by the writers. As much as we love it, it's just meant to be a kids show with a generalized plot and a bit of "teen drama" for the slightly older audience. So yeah, not lazy writing, but not the strictest either.
Stories like this can have Tiki caught in one episode and still have her sitting on Marinettes shoulder in another. The rules change as the plot demands. This might get stricter later, it might even get looser, but it will probably never be consistent.

Here’s my theory on why they can’t seem to recognize each other. First we’ll start with Marinette. Marinette clearly has a huge crush on Adrien, but maybe not for the reasons we think. I think that she likes Adrien mainly for his personality because he is such a different person than, say Chat. She thinks that Adrien and Chat have such different personality’s, for example, Adrien is kind and honest and Chat is kind of arrogant and punny (which Ladybug and Marinette find annoying). Adrien never acts like Chat. Also, of course, Adrien’s eyes and hair changes when he transforms so that probably contributes to it.
Now for Chat. This is pretty much the same as Marinette. Chat and Adrien admire Ladybug’s bravery and sense of adventure. When Ladybug is Marinette, Marinette acts extremely nervous and jittery around Adrien, so maybe that’s why he loves Ladybug so much and not Marinette. But, once again, maybe Adrien/Chat does like Marinette because she has the same hair and eyes as Ladybug, but that’s only if we’re talking about why they like each other for looks.
So in conclusion, Ladybug/Marinette and Chat Noir/Adrien cannot recognize each other because they don’t really pay tooo much attention to looks.

I don't think it's fair to say 'it will never live up to the potential of Steven universe or gravity falls' the story is excellently written, the characters are likeable and diverse, and it has a completely unique world which is so interesting to follow and find out about, yeah you can be annoyed that no body recognises them but that is seriously the last thing I think about when watching the show, miraculous isn't Steven universe, miraculous isn't gravity falls, miraculous isn't stvfoe, miraculous is miraculous lady bug, you can't knock it on the grounds that you didn't think the story was as well written as the other shows, and what about how international the show is and how many different countries it is aired too and worked on, the characters not recognising eachother really isn't that deep lol

Well.. when Chloe impersonated Ladybug, Jagged Stone & Nadja didn't recognise her at first. Also, when The Owl was there, except Ladybug and Chat Noir, people didn't know who he really was at first. So my theory is that it's not that easy to recognise a superhero at first, and LB and Chat hide it well.
Yeah, exaclty ! also to me it's how different their personalities are, because both of them are, when they transform, a totally different person with no past or any personal problem know to others. I still think that their friends should've recognised their close friend at some point, but for ppl who don't already know them or have seen them just a couple time it could be fine

They both act different when they're Laybug and Chat Noir.
-Chat Noir acts flirtly unlike Adrien.
-Ladybug actually talks to Chloe, and isn't as clumsy and braver.
And Miraculous Ladybug isn't Steven Universe.
-People have done plenty of art and edits of ladybug and chat noir looking how they look. And if they changed their maskes, they'd have to change the ALL the merchandise.
You forgot the fact that if people don't expect it or dont want to see it their brain overlooks it. E.I. chloe might have had suspicions about marrinette but can't believe that she is ladybug or how marinette doesn't believe that chat noir and Adrian are the same because she LIKES Adrian but thinks Chat is a flirt. Our human minds can overlook things like that, besides you need to realise that they are living the adventures and when you are outside the action things are much clearer. Plus, in the universe, there may be more fights than shown- so the heroes could have had some close calls we don't know about.

There have been multiple occurrences of stuff like this in real life tho. The superman actor went into an event dressed as superman and everyone recognized him but when he went as Clark Kent everyone thought he was a fan
There are also the occurrences when an actor goes into a look alike contest FOR THEMSELVES and gets like last place because people say they looks wrong

I think its because theres a lot of people with blonde hair and black hair with pigtails... i mean come on guys lets be realistic, they can only really see there hair and eyes and they completely act different when they are super heroes, people can't just assume, even if they can assume its not gonna change the fact that there not gonna know until they actually take off their mask.
Their voices are still the same, though. That's what bothers me the most, even more than height or hairstyle or eye color; why don't they recognize the voices of their best friends? I'd recognize the voice of any of my classmates, even more my friends, so why doesn't anyone ever mentions the voice resemblance of Chat Noir and Adrien or Ladybug and Marinette?

I was rewatching this series today and noticed something I hadn't really fully registered before... Cat Noir's hair is longer and fuller than Adrien's. Once I'd noticed this, I double-checked, and it's not just styled differently, it really is longer and fuller. Combined with his much more boisterous personality when he's Cat Noir, the changing hair lengths when he is and isn't transformed would be enough, I think, to cast doubt for anyone suspicious of his dual identity. I still can't say much in regards to Ladybug, though...

There are other theories/moments too like like how Plagg and Tikki know about the superheroes identities and how they both actually like each other in different forms and sometimes they act like they don't know anything about it. There is also a big theory about Master Fu's mistake with the peacock miraculous and Nooroo the Kwami. He said that once he made a mistake with losing the miraculous. That miraculous cannot be Nooroo because Gabriel never knew about any other miraculous, only the peacock which Emilie Agreste had. And clearly Master Fu knows who he gives the miraculous to and he gave the peacock miraculous to Emilie Agreste.

They explain it in the Ny special. The miraculous makes it so the identities cant be seen by the human eyes.
Maybe when Marinette or Ladybug throws the item of the week in the air and it sets the story back to the status quo it wipes the memories of everyone and seeing them detransform. And since they are saving the day daily there is no time to post about who they are without everyone forgetting. Considering it takes 15 minutes to fight crime. The time difference is not guaranteed but everyone involved with the attack is usually left near oblivious to what happened. Thats just a theory, a cartoon theory.

The creator has actually made some of the characters smarter! For example, alya always teases Marinette about whether she's ladybug or not(and I also think either she or Lila will figure it out in the next seasons!), And Adrien nearly figured it out TWICE (during *weredad* and *kwamibuster* , but he didn't find out because Marinette threw him off by turning into multimouse and purposely revealing her identity so he never suspected her again) And he actually DID figure it out in chat blanc, so he isn't that dumb XD
And I also think that the magic miraculous make them not figure it out as well!
I just pretend that Kwami have the ability to make people notice and similarly Kwami can't notice humans.

As for Adrian, there is a possibility that as a celebrity he has actually been compared with char noir. Well, such comparison is quite common, but no one would really think a fat HongKong young man could be Kim Jong En or a famous comdian in China is secretly a North Korean general only because of their appearance. And the same for Adrian and Chat Noir. He can safely talk about and make jokes about it in public while no one maybe except his father will believe that a well-educated teenager can be a flirty superhero. Besides, maybe the mayor, who surely have some kind of influence in the police and is a big fan of super heros, cancelled all the inspection actions planned by police force.
But Mr. Agrest knows. Episodes 1-8 of season 2 r on TH-cam & he makes that quite clear. He realizes the truth in "Simon Says" (S1 E18).

Sometimes I like to think that some of their friends/family know, but they just pretend they don't and never discuss it or tell anyone.
When some reporter saw chloe dressed up as ladybug they thought she was actually ladybug until Sabrina said her name then they automatically came to the conclusion that she was not ladybug (dunno why) even if it was so obvious that it was not her even without her name! Dont forget the fact that if people don't expect it or dont want to see it their brain can overlook it easily. E.I. chloe might have had suspicions about marrinette but can't believe that she is ladybug beacuase she doesn't want to believe her idol is the girl she bullies at school or how marinette doesn't believe that chat noir and Adrian are the same because she LIKES Adrian but thinks Chat is a flirt. Our human minds can overlook things like that, besides you need to realise that they are living the adventures and when you are outside the action things are much clearer. Plus, in the universe, there may be more fights than shown- so the heroes could have had some close calls we don't know about.

Remember in the episode Evillustrator, the last shot was zoomed in up on Nate's drawing pad, and in place of where Nathaneal drew Marinette hugging him, he drew Ladybug! With hearts under it as well. He even crossed out the drawings in which he saved her.
I think this means he knows that Mari is Ladybug, and that she can take care of herself.. There's a theory somewhere on youtube, I forgot who by, but they explain that Nate knows because he has photographic memory, (like how in Roger Cop he drew and memorized Chloe's bracelet exactly even after seeing it for a second) and now he can recognize Marinette even past the mask...

Maybe one of their powers is some sort of magical knowledge barrier that makes their identity unrecognizable.
This is pretty much my assumption as well. (See also the concept of a "perception filter" from Doctor Who and other media: tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/PerceptionFilter ) Although I was thinking of it as a power of their Kwami. Anyway, on top of that, my speculation on why they must keep their identities secret even from each other is that every person that exists who knows the secret weakens the barrier and makes it easier for others to realize the truth.
And why wouldn't the answer ultimately come down to "magic" anyway? Both of their Miraculous are clearly very powerful artifacts, but for Ladybug in particular we're talking about someone with the power to magically undo massive amounts of damage inflicted upon the city by a rampaging villain. What sort of limits would something like that have? I don't think we've seen it fail to fix anything yet, have we?

This trope is called Paper Thin Disguise, and it's actually very common. Another french animation that features it would be "A Monster in Paris" where they simply placed a white coat, gloves, and a half mask on a 7 foot tall, blue faced flea and everyone was fooled.
Pixar uses it in The Incredibles.
Disney used it in their hit show Darkwing Duck, and for episodes in Rescue Rangers, TailSpin, and DuckTales, just to name a few.
Dreamworks also used this in Shrek. Fiona wasn't able to tell that shrek was an ogre even though his only disguise was a helmet that barely hid anything. They even called themselves out on using that trope in the movie Home, where a single beauty mark caused no one to recognize a wanted criminal.
Major production companies use this trope alot with no explanation as a gag. It's a joke, part of the charm of the series.

The Magic Theory might be correct, because going back to the Lady Wi-Fi Episode, Lady Wi-Fi (Ayla) was gonna reveal who Ladybug really was by removing her mask, although she did try, she was unable to. The mask couldn’t get off Her face Ayla asked “How is this possible, why isn’t it coming off?” Ladybug answered with “Because it’s magical.”

I was waiting for a Halloween episode where everyone dresses up as Lady bug and Cat Noir and then they finally realize it’s Marionette and Adrian lmao
My theory: Because in one of the episodes Adrien meets that fencing girl who (by using common sense) he thinks is ladybug, that made me rage. It was a relief when Chat battled against her with Ladybug, though. He also had the pain in his left leg while being both Adrien and Chat, which should have given it away for Ladybug- If he had not shown his pain as discretely. Have I been the only person to notice Adrien's slight change in hair color and style? As Adrien, he has lighter, platinum blond hair that is shorter than Chat's, and Chat's hair is darker and a bit longer- almost shoulder length. Showing that Chat has a more sassy and sexy attitude and Adrien is mellow and polite, their personalities do make a huge difference. Same with Ladyug, although she looks the same physically as ladybug except with more confidence. She has a bit more of a dainty but strong walk as Ladybug too, and I think her stance is a big part of why even Alia can't find out who she is. Marinette is not confident when it comes to talking to people- Just think about how the hell she'd be able to fight crime with Chat if she new his identity. It's not that the Miraculous have to prevent the hero and heroine from shedding their secret, it's that they both know what'd happen if Marinette knew Chat as the same person she feels stressed around.
The scouts from Sailor Moon are a similar case to Miraculous and Superman, but they actually have an explanation: The scouts have a special magic that makes it impossible for anyone normal, even family and friends, to recognize them while they're transformed. Maybe Miraculous has something similar?
