British Police are pursuit specialists - widely recognised as some of the best trained operators in the world - what do they know that the rest of us don’t ??
I recently headed to Blyton Park Circuit with my good friend, Police Interceptor to put both UK and US police interceptor vehicles through their paces and find out exactly how they differ when pushed to the limit. This time around, it was the UK’s chance to shine, with the mighty BMW 530d. Ben showed me some of the trade secrets from the ‘Boys in Blue’ as I began to get to grips with this powerful and torquey German saloon.
Equipment is just part of the story and I’ve always wanted to try out a real British cop car. I’ve driven a few over the years doing stunt jobs in the movies, but never a current pursuit car like the ones on Channel 5’s Police Interceptors - and not with one of the most seasoned Pursuit specialists sitting alongside me.
In his Hey-Day, Ben Pearson (@BenPearson1965) was engaged in three Police Pursuits EVERY WEEK in West Yorkshire.. Can you imagine the stress of waking up every morning to a more than 50% chance of being the grown up in a high speed, life and death game of poker..
I really enjoyed picking up Ben’s insights from his career and small things he knows instinctively - like the best car for jumping speed bumps - as well as his no nonsense approach to Roadcraft which is the gospel of Police Driving Skills.
I hope you enjoy this video and if you’ve got any suggestions for which Police force I should go for a drive with next please let me know in the comments 😊
Huge thanks to Ben for the great chat and guidance throughout the day. Stay tuned for the next episode where it’s the US’ turn, with a very special Ford Explorer…

i think the best way to teach people is to actually spend a day on a skidpan, and get people familiar with the feeling of oversteer, understeer, and build up that muscle memory for car control. Some people have it naturally, most don't, and it needs to be learnt. Once you've got car control everything else falls into place.

+1. A number of years ago I did exactly that. Thinking that I already had a pretty good sense of what to do/not do in a given situation, I didn't think I'd get much from it.
      Boyohboy, was I wrong.
Once I took my ego out of the equation, I learned a ton.
Kudos to Rick, Pamela, and Kevin for giving me some tools to handle emergency situations with a minimum of input and maximum of safety.
Every driver, IMHO, should be put through that winger. It's hard on the ego at first, but worth every moment. And, without doubt, when something starts to go pear-shaped on the road, I can almost hear my instructor sitting beside me, guiding me through the situation with a minimum of fuss.
      (Edited for spelling, twice)

I spent a couple of days at Phil Price's Rally School in Wales. Phil had a very simple way of explaining how to react to oversteer. He said to point the steering wheel and hence the front wheels in the direction you want the car to go.
He also gave good advice on crashing. He said that if you're going to go off and you can't save it, drive the car off the road, don't fly off all crossed up with all of the brakes locked. That way you can try to steer the car and avoid anything too solid.
Good advice. I slid in the snow on Thursday and was locked up (despite ABS) heading for the end of a dry stone wall of a rural bridge. It would have hurt. I remembered what Phil said, so came off the brakes and was able to regain steering. Not enough to avoid an accident, but I went into a gorse hedge rather than a stone bridge. Couple of paintwork scratches, nothing else.

Talking about push and pull vs hand over hand steering at 4:00 ish is always interesting (nerdy but interesting). Find myself going hand over hand 9 and 3 for anything that needs fine control, and then super twisting throwing things around hairpins and silly stuff (on track obviously), the push and pull/let the wheel go drifting style tends to come out. Takes a lot of practice to find the style to avoid doing the panic hands or smacking your hands together like a dumby when things get a bit hairy.

Of my 33yr Aussie policing career, I spent a third in Highway Patrol, driving Ford and Holden V8 interceptors (as well as riding the motorcycles).
We were taught push - pull steering and when you're in a dangerous high speed pursuit, and I have been in many, it's the most effective steering I found and gave the best control over those heavy sedans. I taught that same skillset to both of my children when they were on their learners.

I don't really like that but it's a great way to teach popo or kids disciplined driving, but if you're in a bandit car chase it's not quick enough,I got chased by a couple of traffic cars once and I lost them without speeding in Chester because I was a taxi driver and knew the town and because police drivers aren't rally drivers, they don't do handbrake turns and I do,and so I kept losing them on the hairpins.

Interesting to hear him describe the Vectra VXR as his favourite squad car. In 2007 I had a 2007 Astra VXR then in 2010 I moved on to a 2010 Insignia VXR, the successor to the Vectra. I loved that car.
The performance was good. After a simple remap the performance was breathtaking considering the type of car it was. The mid range power got a huge boost and it pulled so well with a nice, meaty sound coming from the back of the car. I drove it at the Nurburgring Nordschleife a few times and was faster in that than I ever achieved in the Astra, my Nissan 370Z or Mercedes 350 SLK. On the Ring's GP circuit, yes, its a bit too big and boaty for a small, technical course. On the right roads though it was a beast and super comfortable, exceptionally stable and had some really nice features for its time (road sign reading, heated seats, auto full beam headlights, the ability to flip the dimmed headlight direction electronically if you were driving in Europe and so on - that was a HUGE plus for me and my yearly trips over to Germany).
The downside of the Insignia VXR... fuel economy was dreadful. Also, due to the brakes being Brembo, it was around £1600 to replace just the front discs. For a Vauxhall, thats a tough pill to swallow. Also being quite a rare car (when I had it in 2010-2013 there were about 300 in the UK) parts would generally be pricey. The timing chain had a known issue in them too which would cost a fortune to fix (£3k+). Fortunately mine broke and got repaired within the 3 year warranty. If I could find a good one at a cheap price I'd happily have another though.

I was very fortunate to be mentored by a retired police bike instructor. First ride out with him, I was gobsmacked how much he was seeing and the info he took from it,, hile I sailed along watching the scenery. I've since learned the difference between a good,, dvanced civilian and police rider is this: at 3 figure speeds, they see everything, synthesise it into being in the safest place on the road, all whilst pursuing the chase and operating their tech.

Kia Stinger is used in Australia by some forces although it is now out of production. It was a big dilemma once they stopped local production of Falcon and Commodore as there were specific police models with uprated suspension and more importantly brakes for local conditions. The quality of Police driver training makes a huge difference. I was often able to keep up in a pursuit of a more powerful car due to better driving skills. A straight, clear road would be different, but in suburban areas, they are few and far between.
We didn't do too much track time. Initial demonstration of the ABS system took place on a runway with cones and that was quite enlightening. Skid pan was another day. The rest of our training took place on public roads.

I spent a lot of time in empty parking lots in all conditions and in many different drivetrain layouts to get used to all sorts of traction loss and learn how to handle them. I'm nearly 33 which means I'm a slightly older idiot now, but I have to say I'm grateful for the trust my friends gave me because I've had a lot of close calls and I've been in a few crashes, but never with me at the wheel.

SUV’s are never going to be as good as cars so I disagree with making the switch. Even a lot of armed police are using A6 avants over the x5 and xc90 nowadays. The 3 series is rhe perfect handling vehicle due to its size though from what I hear. As for the pull bar, it can actually do some serious frame damage I believe and of course if they hit any civilian, it can be a major issue hence the health and safety issue comes into it.

OK I get what is meant in theiryand hiw and why, but in a practical sense it's just not apparent to me. Most cars feel the same as far as I'm concerned, unless there's something badly wrong.

    Hi Ben,
Do you think you could do an Ask Me Anything video?
I'm sure as a main cast member of Top Gear in its prime that you could fill several hours with replies to questions that many people would be enthralled by.
I've seen you talking on podcasts about behind-the-scenes stuff which was very entertaining, maybe you could make some content where you pick some questions from the comments section, and make a video from it. This might be an idea for when you're struggling to come up with an idea for a video on your channel.
    My questions would be,
when filming races on Top Gear, how did you get the out-of-car footage? Filming at a race circuit would be hard enough, let alone having to cover several hundred kilometers of road, and if you're racing, surely the filming cars can't overtake any of you to set up for the next shot without breaking the law.
Also, when there were scenes with The Stig that didn't involve him driving, like when Stig caught the tube, did the production crew just use someone of a similar build and shape?
Did you hide your identity from the F1 drivers when they came to drive the Liana?
Did anyone try and flip up your visor?
I could come up with a lot more questions, but I think many on here could come up with even better questions.

    Nerd alert:
The Police Vectra shown in the clip wasn't a VXR. It was the pre-face-lift Vectra C. Pretty sure you're looking at a Vectra GSi, which was a 3.2 24V with about 210BHP stock, uprated and slightly lowered suspension, with better brakes, but unlike the VXR, it had no turbo.
I had one and if you kept the traction control on it was a pretty quick car (in its day) and even handled well.

A race driver worries about speed first, traffic second and the safety of the public (at least on closed courses and not rally stages) last. A policeman in pursuit has the desire to catch the offender but he must keep in mind that his car must stay in control for the sake of the public. Further as demonstrated by the short video, drivers pull out into the chase and the policeman must do whatever he can to not cause an accident. Both drive fast but I would offer the police pursuit driver will always have a little bit extra margin just in case.

I am a big fan of British policing tactics in pursuits. However, TPAC is not a suitable option in the US. Weapons are far too prevalent for law enforcement to take the risk of driving alongside someone who may be armed. Admittedly, the large number of cars are often unnecessary, and I would agree are not tactful. That said, the US often has the resources to throw at such occasions when the many British constabularies struggle to put feet on the ground. Both methods of pursuit, and the vehicles used, are appropriate for their respective countries. There is no one-size-fits-all.

That 530d is a manual. Most if not all police 330d and 530d's were auto. And authority spec car's had lowered stiffer suspension and stiffened chassis with alot of extra reinforcement. And better brakes. Ex police handle much much better than standard cars.

Suspension components can be a pain to get the correct parts for and brakes. There are visible differences between them and civi bmw's. Doors for example have extra strengthening and insulation in them. Chassis have extra rails and box sections. Google bmw authorities vehicles. And traffic cars are only really serviced and repaired in house or at the main dealer.

@@peterbunting8485 my bad, what a fool, so they do! Seems bmw sell the kit for it comprised of M sport suspension and brakes, with chassis reinforcement including struts and sways. Guess it makes sense for all that extra weight, the SE suspension is rubbish and so are the brakes, well, more the pads when it comes to fade anyway. Don’t know why the forces didn’t just buy M sports in the first place but I’m guessing the kit was cheaper than the model upgrade per car.
I know they used to have stage 1 maps on the omegas (and more) direct from factory but considering how powerful modern engines are you don’t need that these days. I do wish they’d use more confiscated cars in service it would be really good to see different cars on display out and about but the costs would be astronomical given everything can’t be done en masse. I know they used to have a scheme for this but not anymore sadly.
