- Mike Fernie has bought a new car, and it's an incredibly rare unicorn of the 2000s. With a 2.5-litre V6 a big wing, and an crazy rare paint colour, this performance saloon could be a serious investment.
You'll be able to see Mike's car at DriveTribe Live, get your tickets here: bit.ly/DT-Live...
Mike's idea of installing a PS2 in the car and playing NFS and GT fills my heart with joy
Really need to get some Saabs on this channel!
Food for thought 🙂
facts my old 99 0-3 was one of the best cars I've ever owned the HOT engine slapped
@@MoreDRIVETRIBE The 900 turbo was a beast but everyone had major problems waiting for parts for them. I loved them the ride was epic but any faults and you had to park it up for a month or more.
My guess was the Saabaru 9-2! I currently own a 05 9-3 and prior to that a 95 900SE. The 900 was by far a better built car. That went 297,000 miles with just regular maintenance and the 9-3 is sitting at 294,000, same deal. Still getting 32 mpg.
yessssss
Thank you Mike for sticking up for the Z cars again. 👍🇬🇧❤️
Since Mike seems to be working his way through all of Rover's products since the late 1990s, I'm looking forward to when he gets a Rover 75 V8
The ZS 180 has always been a guilty pleasure of mine; I thought they were cool little sleeper cars and who doesn't love a meaty little V6. Always preferred that dark blue that MG did but the white is a very individual colour. Definitely want to see more of this.
Sleeper ?
Well done, Mike, for buying this beautiful car. Look after it. Don’t ruin it with too many mods.
Who compared a Rover with a Subaru back in the day?!?
Exactly what I thought.
This video is the only time that comparison has been made
I can't remember the magazine that did it, but one did have a comparison between a 180 and Impreza...I seem to recall Brundle was driving...
It's more that loads of them were done in a blue similar to subaru blue with gold wheels. It wasn't necessarily comparison made by press but an aesthetic sought by the owner base of the time.
No one.
Lovely car! Alfa 156 2.5 V6 owner here. More than powerful enough for what is a pretty light car!
don't tell him you have an extra 10 bhp though in the Busso 😉
I had a yellow ZS180 and absolutely loved it, it’s a cracking car
Lets see what Ben Collins has to say about it, as we all know he loves a Rover.
Great cars, so underrated! The first proper car I bought back in 2004 and still have it (albeit under a sheet in the garage for the last 10 years or more)
Totally agree with the 180 to 200hp in a lightweight 90s/00s car with a manual transmission. Just enough power to have sensible fun on british b roads.
These two channels are great. In addition to the top-class presenters and big budgets, we get ordinary attainable cars in the spotlight. Brilliant content!
This 71 year old boy racer wishes the Rovers and MGs were available on this side of the pond, so I have to live vicariously through you, Mike.
Mike's cheeky smile during that little pull coming out of the intersection at 14:07 is everything
1992 Isuzu/Honda Domani later facelifted and became the Honda Civic/Rover 400 and continued as the Rover 45/MG ZS long after Honda had stopped producing it. The only MG designed by Honda
Yes, lots of aftermarket / upgrade parts for the Hondas fit the MG ZS.
It's not the entirely a Domani/Civic having owned both plus the 45 and ZS. They are very similar but Rover did apply a number of changes to the suspension setup and body structure. They're a bit stiffer and a bit better in a crash.
All great cars though!
Love that Rover-Civic. Grew up in that car
the thing i loved about my zs 180 apart from being a loon in firefrost was the fact hardly any equipment you just got what you needed
Love this. As a ZS Monogram owner myself, keep it nice and original, plus away from rain. I had the chance to buy this exact car a couple of years ago, but stuck with the one I have. Prices will only go up. 🍻
@Mike, love how it’s easy to see your enthusiasm for these project cars is genuine.
Mike should have a really cool nickname: MG Mike
Heck, when MG knocks some sense into themselves and becomes properly British again (hopefully), they should build a car called the MG Mike Fernie! 😂😂
Mike would 100% be on board with this 🤣
@@MoreDRIVETRIBE And it'd definitely be a sedan, British racing green and V6
Designed to resemble a young, bald Scottish lad.😂
MG are 100% Chinese, and will remain so
@@hoodwinker7932 I'm not sure if that is supposed to start an argument or somehow, weirdly an agreement with me
But I do not wish to start a discussion on the internet. Simple
That switch by the central vents is to bypass the heater. You can have warm air at your feet or the screen, then cool air at face level at the same time.
honestly, i genuinely prefer these videos to the main channel videos.
(two a week please?🥺)
Haha we will certainly try. It's a huge amount of work behind the scenes, by an amazing, dedicated crew to do what we do, but we will definitely work hard towards bringing more regular content. Just stay posted and keep up the support, we will get there. ❤
This car was at Shedfest, I met the woman who had it before that sold it.
Awesome car and well worth saving from age related issues.
Mike and JayEmm saving all the MGs. Nice to see them getting some love.
The Z cars do really seem to witness somewhat of a renaissance and deservedly so. Personally I prefer the Mk2 look of the ZS (but Mk1 for ZR and ZT) but you got yourself a gorgeous example and that V6 sound is just heaven.
A Saab challenge would be great along with an OG900 vs NG 9-3 comparison too. The quality difference is apparent as soon as you sit down. Another great video mate!
Love it. I was a massive ZS fan back in the days, with a mk1 120 and a mk2 180. The mk2 had the wide bodykit with wing vents. Looked amazing. The handling was brilliant, the Civic/Integra based suspension helped there.
Loving the positivity with the new, dynamic duo. £4k though!
very underated and mocked by those that haven't driven one we've owned and a lot of cars and this was by far the best handling fwd i've owned and the v6 loves to be taken right through the rev range, i dont think the subarau/evo is fair comparison it fell into a class of its own really it was better then the golf gti, leon fr, mk1 focus st, astra gsi no other manufactuer were taking run of the mill cheap saloon cars and making performance cars anymore
I suspect Maxwell had his fingers crossed every time he said anything remotely complimentary about the Rover 45 ☺
I'll be honest, I actually think it's kinda cool. Maybe that's because I hate all his other cars so much. 😂❤
YES! My ZS is sat outside getting ready for the summer. SO glad to see this, happy to see others finding this gem.
Love it. I've owned 2 and would have a 3rd! So much usable power on any kind of road, they just grip!
I had 2 of these back in the day and loved them 🙂
Love it Mike! Now go for a ZT-T with the K-series turbo. I'd love to see you guys tune one! Oh, and we need to get an XPower SV-R on the channel, even if it's just for a single video...
Narrator - “In fact it did not just need re-gassing” 😂
I really think that the ZS180 would be epic with a K24 swap!
It'd be faster and the engine weighs less so it would potentially handle better, but......
These are a rare thing and need to stay as original as possible please 🙏
Having owned a Nissan Primera GT ( copy ) for 15 years I used to get mickey taking for years but the last 3 or 4 years of ownership it got respected. I can see this happening with this. Its retro enough to be different and almost cool. Aside from countless questions of 'what is it?' by anyone under 35 though
Saw this live at shedfest the video doesn't do this colour justice its stunning. Also that switch on the vents is for fresh air its actually quite a nice feature in the colder months were you can have the heat on your feet but some fresh air to keep you awake on your face.
Great New car. Not a huge amount of Rovers and Old Mgs left. Not long purchased my own Rover 45 as a project car.
I cannot wait to see this at drivetribe live 😍
Absolutely love this! Challenging stereotypes and showing how much better these are than popular opinion suggests. Please keep it nice and original.
Great car, always wanted one of these when i was younger lol
That’s a nice car Mike looks like a keeper.
Nice little v6 beast.
FYI i did 15 years in the Car Audio industry during the late 90s/00s, and literally hundreds and hundreds of headrest screen installations.
Those screens will have wiring installed down through the metal poles, through the seat upholstery, and come out underneath the seat base.
For the PlayStation install, youll need a 12v to 240v inverter to power the PS2.
Great car, and i absolutely get what Mike means about nasp V6 engined cars.
But as i daily an MG ZT190 and have a ZS180 tracktoy i might be slightly biased😁
I had one saloon in red fantastic handling car. Mg had just gone bust so I got a 4 year old example for ,£3500. Only problem engine used to cut out when it rained and you went round a round about.
OG Saab's of 900 decent would be nice to see.
The blue means you get outside fresh air flow passing through the middle whilst you have hot air in the cabin such as the side vents and windscreen vents almost like a very basic early version of dual climate and the red means the outside air fliw is cut off and all vents pump out the same temperature as on the dial selected on the dash very handy in winter when you dont want to roast too much but need the front windows cleared
Blue is fresh air white is climate control, the idea is that you can have heating desmisters and fresh cool air at the same time. It’s an idea both Honda and bmw stole from rover.
Mike be comparing in mondeo to literally EVERYTHING. last vid is was 55% of a db9 now its a GT3 racecar lol feel like he might be trying to boost the market haha
Great car, and i absolutely get what Mike means about nasp V6 engined cars, but i might be biased as i daily an MG ZT190 and have a ZS180 tracktoy.
Believe it or not but these mg v6's were one of my favourite cars back years ago when I was a kid
That time it came out I worked at rover mg landrover as a mechanic and i still love those cars. Taked care of them almost 12 years
Took one of these round Thruxton on a track day around 20 years ago. Really liked it.
i like this channel more than the main channel, great content guys
Great car. Can't wait so see underneath
Performance saloons with a manual are always a vibe! I prefer something with a V8 for myself, but the MG is pretty rad.
Driven one of these, they seem like great fun dailys.
Always loved the mg/ rovers, owned a fair few. Its a nice example so please don't ruin the suspension for track setup. Modernise the setup yes.
Mike should do a bit of work on the "...in the world." Line, Max set him up twice and Mike glossed over that iconic line! Cmon!
Gonna love seeing this, im rocking a goodwood green mk2 zs120
What a colour, I have a black one!
Black with smoked out rear lights? such a sleek look
Miss my 180. The 3rd gear pull was amazing, but the cam belt was a pain and expensive.
Mike you've got problems mate.
On an unrelated note, me and a friend took the drivetrain from one of these which had been rear ended and put it in a blue rover 25 with all the MG kit on it. Surprisingly it was a complete pain in the backside to get in there even though the theory said it should be pretty much plug and play.
No idea if that thing is still about because that was in about 2008. It sounded awesome with pretty much open exhausts though.
I had the face-lift version, it was a fun drive and I miss it
Cracking little car. With the screens, i would presume they will run from internal power source (I.e when ignition is on) That's what happened with the ones i had on a Disco4. Also, they should be in built DVD players, so if you push the bottom corners of the units, it should tilt the screen downwards to reveal the DVD slot
That is also called “Snow Queen” colour. Very hard to repaint parts to look same like others.
Watch out on the mondeo for running it low of oil as non baffled sump starves 1 or 6 piston of oil and spins the bottom end shells with spirted driving. Also ditch the standard from brakes, and swap for focus st225 ones on the front and upgrade to braided hoses.
I had a soft spot for the 180s, although I prefer the facelifted version with it's bolder (or chavier lol) bodykit
Be cool to see that with either a supercharger or turbocharger kit fitted. I don't know if these had a limited slip diff but if not stick one in too and see how it goes. 😎
TY 🙏🙏
it is a nice-looking car. Do we start calling Mike, "MG Mike" now?? 🤣🤣 We need to see a Saab on the channel at some point
Go find a Platinum version of TOCA Race driver for the ps2 with the MG on the cover. Yes, Gran Turismo and need for speed are better games, But you can't beat seeing that matching grille on the cover.
Excellent had a zr160 ,love the mg z series of cars 👍
Nice looking wheels on the 620ti 👀
I do still miss my ZR160 in XPower grey.
Nice to see that you guys use the same audio setup I have :)
Very underrated car, I had a trophy blue back in the day. Its made me start looking for another now!!😂
Mike why don't you just get the Rover 220 Coupe Turbo "Tomcat".
Dang, if I ever move to the UK I'm hitting Mike up to help me buy a car!
Absolutely ❤ this! I have a trophy blue V6 saloon
I have a mg zs v6 180 its was a Y reg only had 40k on the clock when i sold it. Was a fun car to drive. Been waiting for this video to come out
I've got a slimline PS2 if you want it, that a really cool car
Love these cars had mine a few years now only real bug bear I have found with them (apart from the roof lining) is the door handles they break a lot. If you get a chance change them for the Honda Accord version
The smile when you put your foot down said it all
i have the civic version of the rover 45, so happy to actually see the family of cars mine belongs to actually get mentioned
oh and to answer your question on the weird blue arrow/ not blue arrow switch in between the vents it simple opens or closes a vent that lets outside air into the cabin without fans
House or the rover-stang, hard decisions
The adjustment between the centre dash vents is so that you can have cool air from those vents even if the heat is turned up on the other outlets. Warm feet, cool face.
Insurance in the UK
“ so you have chosen death “
I have the same blue switch near my vents in my 1990 Accord, had the car for over 3 years now, still no idea what it does.
Great rare car Mike, enjoy 😍
So we know what mike's next car collection will be
just get a corrado vr6 on it and let us all smile please
I completely agree the Corrado is an absolute legend car, however you're the first person to suggest this.
That's a collectors car use it as a show car it's an investment Mike remember how cars auction for 25k and up this could eventually be one of those
That’s a cool looking car . Eventough in live in The Netherlands where there are not many MG/rovers ( real MGs not the Chinese fake ones ) I sometimes look at them on second hand sites . They look cool, aren’t the boring overrated bmw , and I’ve seen videos they drive pretty well.
You ought to drive around Voorburg sometime. I think there used to be a dealership around here, as I see them quite often...
Absolutely needs an intake 👌
It's a Honda Civic facelifted to look like a BMW with less taste than the 2020 ones
String Theory garage guy used to track day one of those, he's the man to speak to.
My mum had one of these back in 2008 but the 1.8
Looks like an EK Honda Civic
Too bad you guys already got an Alfa, the 147 GTA 3.2 V6 256 HP would have been a riot to own, drive, fix (duh) and modify. True pocket rocket that one!
You should supercharge this car!!!!
The dash trims been painted to match the outside. Wasn't offered with that. Notice the trim round the vent controls is what it's meant to have. Still love these things though
