Thank you for your helpful tips. I am 70, and never never let my hair grow out gray. I am about 3 months into growing out to gray. I am excited about this new adventure, but I don't want to look 80 by the time it is all gray. I plan on shoulder length hair with layers, and I have thought about some touch up with the gray color. Hi Justin! COVID pushed me to go natural when I couldn’t get to the salon for a few months to get my roots covered. I decided to just go for it and have been dye free for six months. I love my white hair, and at 64, my goal is to look “modern” and to avoid the frump in both my hairstyle and my clothing. I wear my hair short with longer bangs, and my stylist advised me to use a paste product to give my hair movement and to make it look a little messy. It works! Thanks for this video!
That’s awesome!! Congratulations and your stylist was spot on! Pastes, or wax products in general, can be a great option to add movement and texture to hair. Thanks for the support on the video!

I wore my hair shoulder length or shorter since I was 10. Since I let it go grey I also grew it long. I have never gotten so many compliments in my life. I'm about to turn 57. It's not for everyone my age, but I believe it works for me 😁
Justin just wanted to say, Thank You, I look forward to your videos! Not just bcuz you’re an amazing human who gives us epic knowledge in your craft but also bcuz you care enough also to take us on a glorious adventure while doing it! We get the best of both worlds while in reality, right now, this world is totally crazy. I also appreciate the fact that you drove an hr & a half just to get to the perfect spot! ❤️
Love these tips EXCEPT for the lowlights one. ☺️ I’m 52 and have let my natural silvers take over. I thought lowlights would help with the transition but as they faded they turned an ugly ‘blorange” which I had to keep up with using a toner. There’s just something badass about being silver!
Hi, I am 45 years old and my hair is all white (not grey). The color is lifting and can’t keep a dye more than 2/3 weeks. I am worried that I might look older in white hair. What is your opinion please? Thanks and regards xx
@@jacquelinecortis285 in actuality, you look older with gray roots. Follow the great tips in this video. They are still applicable. Or do what makes you feel comfortable because without the inner confidence, you’ll be miserable either way.
Maybe a change in shampoo would help your hair not turn blorange. I was advised by a hairdresser to continue with my usual shampoo, and afterwards use a purple shampoo for 1-2 minutes, and condition, etc per usual.
Breathtaking scenery WITH narration. Great tips for mature women. I’m 71. Natural platinum since 58. Let my hair grow out quite long during lockdown and love it. The only downside is it is extremely fine and semi thin. I’m having some length taken off in two weeks. Added a few layers near my face last time. Do I dare add lowlights for texture and depth .. as I absolutely love my platinum which people comment on all the time.
@@rozannamurayama9629 I am 53 and have long dyed blonde hair ! I can only be blonde and I look awful with short hair ! Ugh I don’t know what to do with it! That’s why I watch Justin’s videos lol
That's one heck of a waterfall. Great idea about the edgy cut idea. I like the scenery so anywhere you go is fine, the content is the most important part to me.
Awesome! I appreciate that feedback. And yes, that waterfall is definitely amazing! There are a few others did I really want to show people but I just can’t get to them right now because of trail closures. Hopefully that will change soon because they are absolutely incredible!
This is what I call top tier content. As a woman who has always had full, voluminous dark hair, I find some of these tips were great for even younger adults who are not graying. I appreciate all of these tips. I recently gave myself a buzz cut AND decided to rock my salt & pepper. As it started growing out, I started playing around with different ways to slick it down, leaving some hair untouched, and I see what you mean by the edginess. I love it but had no idea of the attention it would get from others where they simply rave about it. I look forward to playing around with different layers when I decide to go longer and low lights (never heard of those). I love the mix of nature and tips. New subbie. 👏🏾
Tuned in for the info on grey hair, stayed for the scenery and animals- subscribed because you talk sense. Love the scenery, can’t wait to travel again. XXX
Justin, thank you for driving all that way in the snow to show us your gorgeous country, even if you didn’t make it. And the hair advice, thanks for that too 😍
So here we are three years later and these points are still valid. I'm now gray, have taken off excess length, gotten layers and am looking into lowlights. Too many people (including aging men with ponytails or turnip heads) get stuck in a look and never change. Hair is a security blanket. But it is so much more fun and freeing to make changes. That's what keeps us young. :)
Another tip is to keep it healthy, I have naturally grey hair since I turned 50 and no one believes me when I tell them my age. As we age our hair changes and the shampoo we have used in the past may strip it of healthy oils. Go with a shampoo that is good for grey hair (I personally use head and shoulders even through I do not have dandruff), condition it and you can even try adding certain vitamins and minerals to your diet to encourage healthier hair. I have always been a low maintenance kind of gal. Little to no makeup, more concentrated on skin care and sun screen than makeup and taking care of what I am blessed with. But Grey hair often is frizzier than youthful hair so you have to take additional steps to keep it healthy and glowing and soft. And do your best to keep it trimmed up even if that means taking the time to get it trimmed up more often than you have in the past to get rid of dead ends, just have them only take off what needs to come off instead of shortening it as much as you normally would have it cut. As we age we have to take better care of ourselves, make time to exercise to stay fit and active, eat healthier, and splurge by investing in a massage and hair cut. I have a monthly appointment for both to ensure I stay the best I can especially since I am in a youth oriented market. I feel better, I look better and to be honest is money I save in other areas by wearing a classic investment wardrobe built over several years, not following trends unless they are something I look amazing in so I shop less for new clothes and spend more on my body and mental health than I do on things that may wear out or go out of style.
So so true. I have started to do the same. Less investment in clothes and new styles. And more investment in my health and well being. More exercise and more relax time.
Interesting, it's been the opposite for me. I still have old dyed ends and my natural hair (about 50% gray and 50% medium brown) is much stronger and healthier than when I was coloring it. The gray hairs seem to be the same texture as the parts that aren't gray yet.
The Eagles brought tears to my eyes. What beautiful scenery where you are, no matter how long it takes to walk the path. lol! It is supposed to be nearly 70 degrees in GA today, and my favorite bird to view here is the Sandhill Cranes when they migrate. Breathtaking to hear and watch. Love bird watching. Look younger? yes. Look the best I can at the age I'm at? Yes. YES!!! And there it is. You answered my last question I had.....I DID go to the salon and got my lowlights/highlights back. One solid color is NOT GOOD on me. It makes my skin look better.
I’ve never seen a Sandhill crane! Sounds awesome. I just recently got into birds. Not sure why, just noticed myself paying a LOT more attention to them. I’m a HUGE fan of big. The bigger the better. I totally agree with the color, it’s amazing how much even subtle color changes can impact the color in a face!
@@justinhickox Maybe you and your wife can come to the North Georgia Mountains and waterfall-hop. There's quite a few here. Wait until the beginning of December of the end of February and maybe you'll get a glimpse at the Sandhill Cranes.
@@oneheart19 That's how the Sandhill Cranes are here. They sound more like a "purr" in the sky. So distinctive. I will (if I'm in the right place) stop, drop to the ground and lie on my back. Because I don't want to miss that moment of being in awe when they fly over, I just have tears.
Justin, thank you for sharing your wealth of knowledge! I love learning from you! I don't believe most hair dressers have a clue about subjects you are teaching us! You're amazing!
Lois, totally agree. Mentioned lowlights to my hairdresser and got a weird look of "what the... ?". To her credit she said she would investigate. Went to another to see if they could match the 4 month regrowth and they simply wanted to colour it all the darker colour which with a semi on a semi - defeating the purpose I thought. Looks like self experimenting, go short, or endure the weird regrowth. At the moment, I'm loving the regrowth the combo seems to be working. Easy balayage :)
Took two years to grow my hair to my shoulders after I stopped highlighting and it’s the best thing I ever did... the grey is more unique! Great points thank you for your video!! Love the scenery
So....I live in Montana and am a fly fishing guide. Clicked on your video and thought, "Wait a sec...did I click on the wrong video?" (I watch a lot of fly fishing videos....) To my surprise, not only did I get some fantastic tips, but I felt like going fishing on that river. Love your combo of nature and hair expertise!
That's awesome! I grew up around a father that used to tie his own flies and his best friend owned a Fly fishing company called Kaufmans Streamborn. I never really got a chance to do it too much but it looks SUPER relaxing!
Great scenery, love it!! Good advice. I went grey about 6/7 years ago, kept it long until I realised I was looking like the 14 year old school girls have their hair 😕 not a good look at my age! Recently got it cut and layered and am loving it, see avatar 😁 I've been stopped so many times by loads of people who compliment my hair because of the colour! It's still got a lot of black in it under the white grey! And I totally agree, laughter lines show you've lived a good life, they add character and interest. Thanks for your videos 😎
The Eagles are a big hit for me. Love the advice this week. Friday is my big change day. 4 years of letting my hair grow. I'm going big change. Or I might 🐔out. Gosh commitment issue. Not on change, just on how short I'm going. Stay safe y'all keep blessed.
GO for it!!!! I know it’s scary, and honestly, you may hate it. But at the end of the day, if you don’t ever try it, you’ll likely hate the fact you didn’t. Hair grows. You may find that going short is the best thing you’ve ever done! I can’t wait to hear what you decide.
Really liked the tips/mistakes to avoid. Just because I m letting my gray grow does not mean I m letting myself "go". Appreciate the advice and the hikes. The waterfall is my fav.
I'm 25 and I am already greying quite alot. I'm tired of people just walking up to me, suggesting to color my hair. I'm tired and I really don't want to. I like to color my hair atleast once in two years, depends on my mood. Some just walk up to me and call me old. By the way, great video!
Okay...this is my first time seeing one of your videos....and.... thank you very much for the great hair tips! But.... the nature you captured was amazing!!! Thanks for including all that natural beauty....just stunning ❤️
I love all your videos. This one in particular as I am 74 with grey hair. Good tips and I agree with the edgy suggestion. Looking forward to a new video, as always!
That was awesome! I really enjoyed that! Hair is organic, nature is organic. They go hand in hand. Very healing to watch! Lot's of passion, fun, and humor. Oh but don't forget all the beauty!!!!!
I left Oregon almost 7 years ago and moved to Ecuador; I haven’t been back to the states since. So this video was especially wonderful for me-and, as I have gray hair, relevant. If I ever manage to get back I know who I’m going to try and get to cut my hair!! Thanks!
Love love love! It's such a treat to see snow like this. Where I live in Australia, we don't get snow (I'm in Victoria, in the Dandenong Ranges), it does get bloody cold, in winter we get sleet, which everyone gets really excited about and thinks it's snow... but it ain't! There are snowfields about an hour away though. But it's lovely to see your snow there! As far as the grey hair thing goes, I'm still more pepper than salt, but the salt's catching up. I will NEVER colour my hair, because, having lived with cancer on and off since I was 15, at 57, I feel VERY privileged to have made it to this age, and my grey hair is something I never thought I'd live to see or experience. So please... love your grey hair!!!
Thank you ! I did the devil meets Prada Meryl Streep hair. during lockdown! I had no choice but to go white and love it ! I had to chop it myself but it’s working- I still fit my bike leathers so with a bright red lipstick and my vaccine- I’m ready to go at 67! Thanks for the advice x x x x
That Eagles Nest is the coolest! Justin, thank you so much for addressing and supporting the natural salt n pepper/ gray hair. I've always had longer hair, and haven't colored my hair in 3 years. This was very helpful! Thank you thank you. 💗 I wish you were near me!
Thanks for all the effort you went to to make this video special for us. 😃. I’m in the UK and wish I could visit Portland and also have you sort out my hair. You’re pretty amazing. Thanks again.
Love the low lites idea!!!! I have allowed my Grey to grow out. And I buzzed cut and I loved the edgy look. Now it’s grown and I see the big difference it would make for me to get low lites and add dimension!!! And the fact that I will still rock my grey! I can see it totally worth it and I feel it will look so so nice. I too feel shorter hair or no longer then shoulder length looks best on mature women. Unless you have full body thick hair and you can rock it then go for it!! I am due for a trim and I am allowing it to grow into a bob but as soon as I can get an appt I will definitely get the low lites. And my root hair color is deep brown and the grey pops. So if I Just a few more I think it will look amazing. Thank you so so much for the tip!
I love my stylist but have not had a haircut in a year because of the pandemic. It is 50 shades of gray, wavy and now down to waist . Thanks for showing longer and youthful styles. Lovely view but cold!
I really enjoy these videos. Being outside whether close to your home or far is still pretty cool. Wish I could just fly to Oregon and sit in your chair and let you put all your experience into applying some of these tips on my head. Wish my hairdresser watched you!
Hi there Justin 👋🇬🇧 you’re a breath of fresh air and a joy to watch! Love the nature and scenery on this and I noticed a camera over your shoulder so you like your photography too! The waterfall was amazing. I love all kinds of water especially the sea. Back to hair lol. I came across your video because I turn 60 in August and I’m lost with my hair. Seven years ago I had a very bad reaction to hair colour and was told I could never colour my hair again. I love my natural colour of salt & pepper grey but I have thick hair so finding a style that’s ME is driving me nuts. We’re going on a cruise for my 60th so I want it to be right. If only YOU could do it! I’ve grown it out of a pixie cut into, well a ball shape at the moment and I think it’s aging and dragging me down. I want textured and edgy. You mention a style with movement but my texture of hair is a bit course, not really the fall back into place scenario lol. I must admit when it was a pixie style I used products that would shape and hold and that suited my hair. Can’t believe I’m almost 60 and STILL haven’t found the style for ME! 💇🏻♀️ I tell you what would help too….showing how to blow dry a style and showing what a style looks like from the back as well as the front. Can’t wait to see more videos, thank you for sharing 🇬🇧
Amazing scenery and fabulous tips! I have had my hair almost every length you can imagine and when I have done a short style I have received compliments on how young I looked even since I have gone my natural silver.
I love this video, thank you! My daughter is my stylist and she has done such a good job with my thick, unruly hair. We have managed the first 4 steps quite well. I am at shoulder length with the layers and I love it. Like you said, I embrace my age and have no desire to look younger, just better. I am about 45% grey, and the rest of my hair is a dishwater brown color. Gross. I think the brown actually ages me more than the grey. We have toyed with the idea of platinum with low lights. I would like to know your thoughts? I haven't had color in my hair for about 6 years. I'm a little hesitant. I love all of your views, I live in Kansas where there are no mountains, water falls or forests. So any view from your nature is just beautiful to me!
This is such a great question! The idea of going platinum and doing low lights to re-create the salt and pepper look can be absolutely amazing! I’m sure your daughter is an incredible stylist, with that said I also know that this is a very specific skill set. If she feels super confident in doing it, it would be incredible! The only concern is the grow out. You’re going to see a much more dramatic grow out with your dark hair against the platinum color. But that’s just part of the game at the end of the day. I think it could look amazing though.
Thanks Justin. Love this. I stopped dying a few years ago. I’m 48 and I am already avoiding these mistakes. I have been thinking about getting some lowlights down the road.
You explained the edgy look well and it makes good sense! As does your low lights with gray suggestion. I took a few inches off my hair and added more layers a few weeks ago. I enjoy your hair videos & hikes!
I loved the scenery during your inspiring tips/mistakes! Beautiful state . . . The lowlights sound like a nice thing for me to try - my hair has been grey since I was in my 20's (naturally); but it is very WHITE now that I am turning 70 soon. May just try those lowlights . . . .
I think you would love the little lights. The key in your case is to make sure The low lights are thinner/smaller. Anything to chunky will look like a big black stripe if your hair is mainly white. Also, less is more. You can always add more low lights if you want to, but you can’t take them out nearly as easily.
Ok folks, what kind of views do you want to see? Do you like River, waterfalls, lakes, valleys? Or what would you like to experience on a future adventure??
White water rafting on the Rogue?
All of the above!
Love your scenic hikes. Have you taken us to a valley yet? Or better yet, the view of a valley from a peak.

@@sdfaucette You are so kind!

Justin just wanted to say, Thank You,
I look forward to your videos! ❤️
A bonus to experience nature while tuning in on the grey hair video. Wondering what would be considered edgy yet shoulder length
Love these tips EXCEPT for the lowlights one. ☺️ I’m 52 and have let my natural silvers take over. I thought lowlights would help with the transition but as they faded they turned an ugly ‘blorange” which I had to keep up with using a toner. There’s just something badass about being silver!
@KP Naturally silver.
Beautiful scenery of those gorgeous Eagles and the other wildlife!! All of the above!
They are! I can't wait for spring so I can show you so many other amazing places!
I think it's just I don't want to look "dated". Looking fresh at any age is my goal.
I can agree with that completely!

Luve that you are taking care of yourself , connecting with nature and breathing in all the beautiful fresh air xox
XXX
Thank you Nicole! Welcome to the fam!
Good advice. This cold weather we are having where I live has me hiding under my toque. Solved all the bad hair days.😆
Nice profile picture my dear
@@justinhickox Maybe you and your wife can come to the North Georgia Mountains and waterfall-hop. There's quite a few here. Wait until the beginning of December of the end of February and maybe you'll get a glimpse at the Sandhill Cranes.
@@lori900 sounds amazing!
I love that you're talking about hair outside in nature
Hello Dorie and how are you doing?
Justin, you’re right on top of it! Love your tips, your HINTS! You are the best!
Thanks so much! You're WAY too kind!
I like the fact that you mention "lifting" and explain it in your videos. Seeing is believing!
Really liked the tips/mistakes to avoid. Just because I m letting my gray grow does not mean I m letting myself "go". Appreciate the advice and the hikes. The waterfall is my fav.
I am 57. I made the decision to stop colouring my hair a few weeks ago so enjoyed this video. I try to go for a more modern rather than young look.
Thank you so much! I’m so glad you liked it. I’m a huge fan of silver hair with Edgy cuts. I’m glad you agree!
That was awesome! I really enjoyed that! Hair is organic, nature is organic. They go hand in hand. Very healing to watch! Lot's of passion, fun, and humor. Oh but don't forget all the beauty!!!!!
Thank you so much! I'm so glad you liked it!
I love the idea about the lowlights, those really do make a difference!
The eagle nest is amazing. Love the birdwatching walk outside.
Oh I love the moss on the tree so beautiful
Yes, you makes good sense. I totally agree with all these great tips. Thanks for the cool eagle shot and the beautiful views!
I came to check out the haircuts/hairstyles, but mainly saw a tour video of the outdoors. Where is your featured content?
Great video thank you 😊.
I love how you are talking about grey/silver hair with a wintery grey/silver background. And.. the eagles are just beautiful!
Oh now the vaccine makes you look better ?
Silliest thing I've ever heard Hope you got paid for that ....I'm sure .
I think they're alluding to being ready to go...safely! You're selectively reading something else into it methinks 🤔
Love this! ❤
Leslie Vey, She is not saying the vaccine makes her look younger.
That Eagles Nest is the coolest! Justin, thank you so much for addressing and supporting the natural salt n pepper/ gray hair. I've always had longer hair, and haven't colored my hair in 3 years. This was very helpful! Thank you thank you. 💗 I wish you were near me!
Thank you for pointing out it was an eagles nest as I was really focussed on it. I entirely forgot about the hair subject! Oregon looks amazing!
Thanks for all the effort you went to to make this video special for us. 😃. I’m in the UK and wish I could visit Portland and also have you sort out my hair. You’re pretty amazing. Thanks again.
Love the outside setting! And the tips too of course!
Thanks for the support!

It was wonderful to see Multnomah Falls! I miss the PNW. Thanks for covering what to do with grey hair.
Thanks for the lovely scenery instead of a boring fake background, and the good advice.
I love all the scenery that you have in your videos
Hello Jennifer and how are you doing?
This is such a great question! The idea of going platinum and doing low lights to re-create the salt and pepper look can be absolutely amazing! I’m sure your daughter is an incredible stylist, with that said I also know that this is a very specific skill set. If she feels super confident in doing it, it would be incredible! The only concern is the grow out. You’re going to see a much more dramatic grow out with your dark hair against the platinum color. But that’s just part of the game at the end of the day. I think it could look amazing though.
Breathtaking views, great camera and awesome guide!!! Amazing!!! Plus the tips!!! Wow!!!
I was letting my white hair grow to a half long bob during the lock down. Am excited. Hello from Germany. PS love the eagle.
I love my gray hair. I've earned every single one!
Thank you for your education and example of humility. Generous tips! ☺
Thank you for your upbeat tips and hike. You've encouraged me to grow my grey out.
Thanks Justin. Love this. I stopped dying a few years ago. I’m 48 and I am already avoiding these mistakes. I have been thinking about getting some lowlights down the road.
Thanks Justin. I think grey hair can look amazing, just like the scenery.!!! Just love outdoor and nature.so relaxing. X
I totally agree! I’m so glad you liked it. I appreciate that.
Justin I love the way you think!!
You explained the edgy look well and it makes good sense!
As does your low lights with gray suggestion. I took a few inches off my hair and added more layers a few weeks ago.
I enjoy your hair videos & hikes!
Lucky!! Beautiful scenery and eagles 🦅
Are you the newest fashion guru? I am impressed!!!!!
You’re WAY too kind! 🙏
Loved the hair tips. Equally loved the eagle's nest! Too cool! Thank you for both!
Hello Elizabeth and how are you doing?
This actually answered my question in the mistake tips video to look more youthful. Oh I forgot absolutely love the waterfalls!!!!!
That was the first thing I notice-that awesome nest!💕💕💕
You can't get more real and beautiful than nature.
agree on the lowlights!! grays look great with lowlights instead of just all white n grey
Thanks! These are great tips and I plan to make some changes. Love the wildlife - your varied interests are intriguing!
I loved the tips in this video, also the scenery!
