Justin, I love your videos and thank you in advance for any suggestions you have! I like the suggestion you made for Carol about layering and lowlights to add dimension! She’s got such a full volume of hair - lucky. I’m blonde with fine, thinning (due to covid I believe). My hairdresser says layers will make it look thinner(?) because I would like some movement - all one length now and needs some shape. Can a thin, fine hair be cut into a shag? (I am using Olaplex and Viviscal. Also taking Biotin supplements).
Justin - I think your suggestion of the much shorter style - with the lowlights - would be spot-on for her! However, how much time would she need each day to properly style it? Something only she would be able to determine, with your help...
Loved all your improvements, especially the shorter version! Also, I would REALLY LOVE to see here the real-life hair improvments that ALL the beautiful women you introduced here actually made! can you reach out to them and ask for new updated pictures? it can be a great video in my opinion...
Hi! It’s Carol from the video, thank you everyone so much for your kind words and valuable feedback about my hair! Justin, thank you immensely for your suggestions. You’re photoshop skills are amazing! Makes it so much easier to visualize your feedback. Indeed, I had been growing out a bob that I never really liked. I’m so happy you didn’t suggest that for me. Bulk has ALWAYS been the bane of my existence, you nailed that. I will not rule out any suggestions, but my immediate thoughts are that I’m not sure about the lowlights because of the upkeep, but again, I wouldn’t rule it out. I really liked the short hair, but wow, that would be a big step for me. I am keeping that pic, though. I’m a big believer in baby steps, so I’ll probably start with your first suggestion. I can always take off more and more. Thank you again for profiling my hair and for promoting inner beauty, positivity and nature on your channel! And yes, I do smile 😊
Mine is like yours but I’ve grown it out even longer than yours is. Although I have bangs. I usually leave them curly and brushed over to the side, but sometimes I straighten them. V shaped Not half moon. If you’re into campy sci-fi, think along the lines of Peter Davison’s incarnation of Doctor Who-his companion Nissa. Gorgeous hair and she always had boots to die for, too. If the bangs are straightened. --Left entirely curly, my hair looks exactly like River Song (actress Alex Kingston), and wife of The Doctor from Peter Davison’s real life son in law, David Tennant, through Matt Smith to Peter Capaldi’s Doctor. She’s my favorite Doctor Who character. -When I wash, I just use several mini hair claws to lift it from the scalp and let it dry naturally with more volume, since mine isn’t quite as kinky as Alex’s. Rock those badass curls, Carol! 👊🏽
Hello Justin, I love the fact that you don't criticize gray hair and don't make changes to the faces of the models just the hair, puts everything into perspective because we are real people with real hair problems, I would like to send my picture one day if you accept it.
Ever since my friend’s husband stated emphatically that “all women grow old, get fat and cut their hair short” I’ve wanted to keep length in my hair. Nothing like a pandemic to incentivize growing hair long! I love long hair because it really is so much easier. And my hair is curly, and frizzy. So, I love the shape around her face. I’d want to keep it long. Right now it’s to the middle of my back, which is too long. I do have a side part, but the rest is just blah blah and blah. I think your suggestions on all your videos are just brilliant, but I especially love this one. I think I could rock this style, and now I have something to take to the salon with me! I’ve had 3 good haircuts in my life and I’m over 60. You have no idea what a comfort it is to take a picture and just say, do it like that. Thank you! Thank you! Thank you! The haircut fear is gone🥰
I’m not convinced that the short hair in old women I the issue. I think it’s that they cut it short and stop styling it. Unstyled hair is frumpy no Matter what the cut. It’s the lack of attention to the self that makes it stale
I am with you! I have had only one great haircut in my life. My stylist moved away and I have intermittently cut my own hair ever since. Thanks to TH-cam videos, I have been cutting my own medium length hair with layers and bangs for years. How I would love to have a Justin Hickox near where I live to really give me the best haircut!
i’m her teenage daughter and i took these photos! we have very similar curl patterns and it’s interesting to hear what you think she should do since i am normally the person she goes to for hair advice. i promise that she does smile, i’m not sure why she wasn’t during these photos 😂
If Carol is a smiley, fun, emotionally expressive person, I think it's important that the photo is showing her real personality- it changes your overall look- I'm glad U said your comment. I smile alot & more vivacious- I need my hair to be complement my personality. If Carol is more daring & does not think CUTTING your hair is resigning yourself that U are OLD & SHOULD NOT HAVE LONGER HAIR, she might want to opt for the shorter Lively style that accentuates her cheekbones structure- it's very flattering. But cutting your hair takes guts. If she feels more safe with keeping it longer, the style tips given like cutting the lower thin hair down changing your part to the side, & giving some highlights, would be great also!. Having alot of wavy thick hair is an advantage. She could have many choices to put her locks up in combs ( which is coming in style, back in buns with the front part in the front free or wispy- it could be longer, but show her cheekbone area..
I think the short bob would look beautiful, but having curly hair myself, sometimes shorter hair is more work. So the longer shaped up a bit looks amazing also! Makes her look younger and more vibrant! Love all you did❤️
Thank you! And I totally hear what you’re saying, I think a lot of the short hair becoming more work can be attributed to the specific style of short and the texture of hair. There are definitely a lot of variables involved but I absolutely know what you’re saying and I totally agree with that.
@@justinhickox I've worn my hair anywhere from the bottom of my shoulder blades to (an accidental) pixie. Before I finally learned how to work WITH my curly hair, letting it go curly was "wash and go" easy when my hair was collarbone length or longer. Anything shorter than mid neck is work to get the curls into some sort of style, something i hadn't realized before deciding to chop my hair off. A proper curly haircut would make a huge difference for me, I'm sure.
@@docannedc totally agree! I just got the last of the dye cut out of my silver hair, so it’s a bit shorter than I usually like it and my curls/waves are way off-kilter.
Yikes! A short bob with curly hair sounds like a knotty mess! (And old! Nothing says old lady more than a sharp bob) I use several small hair claws along the top of my hair (which, yes, is layered) to lift my hair up from flattening at the scalp. Then some non sticky hairspray once it’s dry helps keep the volume, so the weight of it doesn’t go flat throughout the day.
Your analogy of how to approach cutting straight hair vs. curly hair was brilliant! I love her thick curly hair! Us thin and straight haired girls would kill for volume like that! I think the longer hair with low-lights and layering would be great on her! As always, thank you for these videos.
That’s awesome! I love that. It’s funny, my wife always calls me the analogy man lol I use analogies all the time. I legitimately think there’s such an incredible way to explain things. And by the way, thank you for the support on a video that doesn’t at all deal with your texture of hair. That means a lot. I really appreciate it.
Absolutely agree with you. It took me years to ‘accept and love’ my dead straight hair, a new stylist/cutter has cut it and I now have some texture and it can hold a wave.....I do wonder whether my stage of life has seen a little change in my hair as well. These videos help me experiment and communicate with my stylist/cutter (who has been on maternity leave for the last year 😢 and is cutting my hair today!). I’m taking a whole year of @Justin Hickox terms with me and ideas from this video too. All information is relevant curly or straight to try and get something we love with our hair.
Carol, any woman would envy hair so thick, wavy, and that gorgeous salt and pepper color becomes you. I do agree to cut it somewhat, and part it on the side, and add some layers to give it better shape. That will be fantastic. Just don't cut it too much, please! And lowlights for sure would be gorgeous! Mine has become super thin as I've aged, so the only thing I can do with it is put it in a bun. I have great cheekbones and eyes and a patrician nose, so I can carry it off, as opposed to women with rounder faces. I really envy your hair and all possibilities it has. I'd love to see a video of what Justin would do with super thin and straight hair like some of us have!
Carol is a very fortunate lady to be blessed with great facial structure AND a head FULL of healthy looking hair. All of the suggestions you offered would suit her beautifully, even the short curve ball if short hair is within her comfort zone. Loved your analogy on cutting approach on straight VS curly hair. I would love to see her results!
I think her hair is beautiful and feel your suggestions accentuated the looks of her hair. I'm glad you left her hair longer. Many women go the short hair route as they get older, but it often has no style and only serves to make them look older. I would say this length or even longer, love the color, and love how you added the volume to the top. That made a big difference and is the issue I have with my hair. I have full, long hair but have trouble getting the volume on top that blends it all in.
Wow, a truly naturally beautiful woman! It's nice that her challenge is "too much hair." So many people have the opposite challenge! Lowlights would be lovely, and the maintenance is twice-a-year. She is worth that. Yes, a bit shorter, and yes, less bulk at the bottom to eliminate the "triangle" shape where the point is at the top of her head. Also, I think her hair is thirsty for more moisture/oil. Maybe less frequent use of shampoo?? When I turned 60, I started adding a bit of coconut oil and sometimes castor oil to my long hair... and it does make my hair less "fly-away" looking. Carol, you are gorgeous no matter WHAT experiments you choose to do with your hair!
Following that first photo-shop pic after cleaning up the length, I heard Justin point it that trimming the hair up like that would reduce some of the weight and therefore new challenges would be created. Completely true. He had my attention at that point. Even now, I’m amazed at the lack of understanding & knowledge stylists have regarding curly hair. And and FYI, we don’t all want to reduce bulk. I decided when I turned 50 to just go with what God gave me. I have a lot of ringlet and spiral, thick curly hair. It’s me, I love it, and I love it big. I’d love to wear it down more but I end up pinning it back or ponying it up before too long. My issue is the top (flattens even w layers), the part, & the cal-licks (sp?). I would love to see you do more curly hair suggestions! And thanks!
She is really so pretty no matter what, but when you showed the first suggestion, I was flabbergasted! It REALLY did just show her face off, then with the low lights .....I was like YEP THATS BEAUTIFUL!!! She has such a beautiful complexion that the little pieces of dark just warmed her skin up so much!!! I hope to see what she does!!!!
She's obviously growing out her silvers as you can tell by the blorange faded color around the bottom, so lowlights most likely wouldn't be a preference. It took her a long time to get to this point in her transition, and as some one who has been through this...I know I wouldn't want any color added. I think after she cuts off the final color from her silvers that it will not only totally change what her silvers look like, but bring the length up like you were saying would be good. More layering is also good. Personally I loved the 'over layering style of the blonde you showed. My hair is very similar in waves and length of this lady, but I don't have nearly her thickness( lucky lady!) For her I think keeping length is best. Like I said, she took a long time to grow this out and if she wanted short hair she could have transitioned long ago with a big chop!
Hello. A Bob cut. The cut should be VERTICAL OR THE HORIZONTAL WILL CAUSE THE HAIR TO BUSH OUT.!! LOVE TO SEE THE RESULT. EILL SHE HAVE A BIT DARKER HAIR? IF NOT HER COLOR US GOID. THEN THE GLASSES ARE CAUSING HER FACE TO DROOP DOWN.. S SLLER GLASSES TO AND SHE IS ON HER PRETTY WSY!!
Hi I know of the triangle effect when my hair gets a bit over shoulder length. I would have loved to try out a relatively short cut, but with my hair being wild curly and more kinky than Carol's, if I go shorter, I look like one of the Jackson 5 or a poodle because my hair lacks any gravity. I love the idea of the asymmetric and slightly vertical bob. A tiny bit longer in the front has also been a good decision , so far. It allowed to accentuate the front and leave a curls in the front out of a bun. Some new glasses should also suit Carol good! I'm not sure if I would have started with going all grey at her age. I could imagine that some natural looking hair color like dark blond would look really good on her! Or she could experiment with defining the curls a bit with leave in conditioner and some curl defining hair wax to add more texture to the curls and make them look more intentional. Some boar bristle brush can help to get the frizz out before defining the curls. Some cat eye shape glasses might look really good on her. She has a very pretty face shape. Reminds me a bit of Carole King.
Carol reminds me of my favorite singer of the 60s/70s...Carol King...I think her hair is gorgeous! I wish mine would turn all grey like hers ... Beautiful Hair! Blessings
I think the model with grey hair (WITH LOWLIGHTS) & teal colored scarf - THAT style and color would look amazing on Carol. Not a drastic or risky change, but would definitely bring out her bone structure, and I'm certain a smile as well
I totally agree! I think that was a fantastic on her. I think it’s kind of the perfect place to start and then either grow it longer with that shape or even go shorter from there. She has a ton of options for sure.
I think the really short cut would create a sophisticated maybe more urban look. The longer cut is more casual and fun, so maybe it depends on her lifestyle or personality vibe as to which she does. As usual, your suggestions really help to increase a more youthful look!
Super glad you did not just say she should not have long hair, but broke down the exact details of how to do the haircut right. I’m tired of the convention that woman have to have short hair. Yes, it could use shape, yes there is a lot of bulk there. I like the way you detail it
I like the longer version of the style that maximizes the movement of her curls. The addition of the low lights would be a good option. Glad you had a model that had thicker hair as it is a different challenge than thinner hair.
Thank you for appreciating her texture and natural color!!!! As a curly lady with gray hair, myself, I absolutely appreciate your realistic and embracing suggestions for Carol.
This could be my hair only a different color! Thank you for doing this texture! The "growing out" and not longer is a real thing for us thick, course, wavy/curly, dry hair! I feel like my hair is wearing me more often than me sporting a great haircut. I really like her hair color, with the lowlights. It just might inspire me to let my silvers show. If I were going for change I would go shorter, maybe not the ultra short. I think just getting the layers and bulk under control looks fantastic and the lowlights look stunning with her coloring! You can always go for a bigger change but I think big change takes thought and confidence. I have gone from her current style to above my ears and regretted it. I also have gone from long to chin length and loved it. The difference? I thought and researched while I had an amazing cut that gave me confidence. Justin, your analogy resonated with me. I will ask my hairdresser how she approaches curly vs straight hair. I am confident that this is the communication we are lacking.
Your suggestion of the really short style is one I hope she goes for. I'm typically not a fan of real short hair for older women because it can make women look so masculine. However with her GORGEOUS silvery curls, I feel like it would emphasize her natural beauty.
I really appreciated this one. I have wavy/curly thick hair and have the same issue with the triangle. Going from the top of my head down and getting huge. Layering and debulking has helped me keep my hair long and looking better. I love the idea of low lights, even though I only have a few silvery/ gray hairs at the moment. Waaay back when I was a teenager, good grief... I permed my hair and also had a bob. I brushed it out one time to prove to a friend why my hair should not be brushed out. I made a complete circle out of my hair around my head. Funny, but also frustrating.
I LOVE the blonde with ‘too much’ layering! It’s soft and beautiful actually! I also love the short style too… let’s face it. Carol is beautiful and she can rock any of these!!! The low lights are lovely…😍♥️‼️LOVE your videos!!!
As someone with gray, curly hair, I think a product that creates more definition to curls also make a HUGE difference in creating dimension. The front and front of the sides of my hair are silver/white, while the back is darker gray. Defined curls in the front are a must for me so it doesn't just look like a pale fuzz.
What products do you love? Mine also tends toward frizzy, I’ve tried plopping, it helps but is a hassle. I’d love to just add something after showering
@@annie68164 I've never had luck with plopping, it always leaves my hair frizzier. Lately, I've been smoothing Not Your Mother's Curl Cream into my curls, then scrunched it in (after using a leave-in conditioner, of course). After that, I scrunch some Aussie Instant Freeze Gel in. I do some root clipping, if I have the energy, and either diffuse until mostly dry, or let air dry, then scrunch out the cast when my hair is fully dry. I've tried more expensive products, but I either didn't like them, they weren't any better that what I'm using, or were so heavily fragranced that they made me sneeze.
@@stephanielohutko3085 Thanks this is good advice! I'll try it. Seems like some days my waves look healthy and nice and others I can't seem to get over the frizz. First time I plopped it was amazing, best curls ever in my life by far but then as I repeated it seemed to quit working.
Carol has such natural beauty and I love the side part with layers! She has beautiful bone structure and can rock any haircut style! Loving this series! 🥰🥰
Naturally curly girl here that really appreciated this video. I think your suggestions for Carol were great and that either would be flattering. I hate the bulk of my own hair and as a busy RN always end up chopping it to a funky pixie that I often often flat iron or wear more curly. I’d love to know what some of your personal favorite products for curly hair are. I have tried so many both high end and more affordable since age 11 as the struggle has been decades long.
try a Brazilian blowout or full Keratin treatment. Best thing i ever did - I have hair just like Carol's. I live in Auckland NZ and we have HIGH humidity a lot of the year and it is the only thing that stops the frizz. I have tried hair masks, conditioning treatments, delicate shampoos etc etc over the years and none of it TOUCHES a good Keratin treatment. I have lost the horror of being caught in drizzle too as my hair doesn't even frizz up with THAT :) And I keep my hair shoulder length and layered so I can pop it up in a bun for those super hot days (this type of hair is like a blanket around your neck on hot days).
My hair is very similar to that lady....silver, wavy and coarse. I have found wearing it long is so much easier. The weight of the length helps to keep it from becoming too wide (big). My hair is almost mid back length and I love it. I'll never go short again.
Mine is the same. It took so long to grow it out, and grow out all the dye, that I will never color or go short again. And summers are so much better with a ponytail. My grandmother had long silver hair until she died and that was a long time ago. I decided to follow her example.
Wow Carol is beautiful and a great example of how challenging thick, course, wavy curly hair is. I bet she's struggled with getting a good haircut her whole life. I have the same hair!! I'm a little older, but have less grey, and actually I'd say my hair is a little frizzier mostly due to dryness (age related). I have saved this video to show my new stylist about more layering at the front. SO many stylists are afraid of cutting layers into this type of hair under the illusion that it 'needs to be weighed down', let alone the face framing layering you suggest. The other major problem I've had in recent years is the trend to point cut or thin cut the ends - this created the worst uncontrollable frizz I've ever had. Hair like Carols and mine, needs blunt ends! The best debulking I've had over the years is internal small chunks taken out. The stylist I have now calls it a Vidal Sassoon old technique - it works wonders for my hair to prevent the helmet look. Thank you again, I have subscribed :)
I think the shorter Bob you showed a model wearing, then adding lowlights would look amazing on her. It in my opinion would be more youthful and contemporary. She has amazing hair. Fun for you to work with! Good job. Thank you. Love these.
Shorter to just above shoulders, silvery blonde gloss, texture to remove bulk , light layers on crown and all over, side swept fringe.large curling iron after blowing dry with leave in conditioner and hot tools oil on lengths
I'm so jealous of her hair! I love the color she has if she just cuts off the old color. I love the idea of taking some of the bulk out from her sides but I'm not a fan of the height on top idea. After she loses some bulk & cuts off the old color, I think she should grow her hair just a little bit longer. Then she'd have the hair I want. 😊
I agree, I think it would be a crime to cut all that beautiful hair off. And then she would just look like everyone else, nothing unique like she looks now.
Carol for the low lights you can do them at home with a frosting cap that you can buy at Sally's Beauty Supply. Get idea what haircolor you want to match your natural hair and put that on your hair after you pulled it through the cap (with a crochet hook that comes with the frosting cap). There you are low lights, no foil needed (except at the salon). You can pull through a lot of hair or a thinner amount. With a frosting cup it give YOU more control where the color is going since you can't do foils on yourself. Process like 45 mins. Rinse the color off and pull off cap and shampoo and condition.
I really like your suggestions for Carol, including the low-lights. She's very pretty and, as you mentioned, has super bone structure and lovely coloring. Being a "curly" myself, I can appreciate how labor intensive the type of hair is -- both to care for, style, and cut. And, of course, it never looks the same two days in a row. Because of that, I'm thinking that the really short suggestion (curve-ball) would drive her nuts -- it would for me -- despite the fact that she could totally pull off that look (if one is having a bad hair day, a very short style can't be disguised except with a hat!).
I have this kind of hair, I just turned 50 and was trying to grow my hair out that I’ve been straightening for 27 years. The reason I cut it off and straightened it to begin with was because I let my hair get too long and it drags the face down. I thought it made me look old at 23! Definitely reverting back to my natural texture, moving my part over and going the length you had this lady at. I think it’s perfect!
Justin, your photoshop skills are at another level these days! So easy to see your suggested changes on length, layering and low lighting. Carol would look amazing with the modest adjustments, as well as the curve ball options. I personally love the shorter and shortest styles. More modern. But she might find the shortest a bit challenging due to frequent cut and daily styling demands. It seems she could use a quality shampoo and conditioner as her hair looks a little dry right now which is another challenge with curly hair. Would you recommend products that would help mitigate dry hair and help with curl definition?
I had straight hair until my grey came in. Now I have hair much, much like Carols. Mine is thicker. Out of aggravation, I had my hair stylist brush it out in front of me to show her the triangle and the bulk. “You need more layering”. YES, thank you. It really helped.
These suggestion were all improvements on this lovely ladies hair style. However as a woman who just spent the last 2 years growing out my fake color and embracing my grey, I would have to disagree with the low lights. Maybe using hair products to help her greys glisten or pop may help. I have curly hair also and it can tend to look a bit drab. When I blow dry it out I get many more compliments for whatever reason on my color?? I think it looks more defined. Whatever she does, all of your suggestions I think would look lovely on an already lovely woman...
I find blowing my gray curly/wavy hair out with a curling brush air dryer adds shine and takes away the volume on the sides that may be undesirable. I also have layers and about the length of her hair. The long layers and blowing out makes a huge difference in the shape and shine. Also, I have dry hair (as most curly do) so I don’t use the air heat only once a week after shampooing. I also use a heat protectant before I use heat. I use dry shampoo the last day or two before washing but overall I still have healthy hair. I also curl my hair away from my face. This really helps make my face look better rather than just hair down.
Right there too. My hair looks exactly like yours. Was hoping for some good ideas, but think I’ll stay where I am. I wear it up a lot. Ponytail, twists and messy buns.
Loved the suggestions. I am a silver haired curly girl, too. 62 years old. I decided on low lights last year and it totally was a game changer. I’m very pale, now with vitiligo (the fun just keeps coming) have added pounds (menopause and a desk job), too. THE GOOD NEWS, I’ve learned to love and take care of my curly hair with curly hair products and techniques. THAT IS AN ABSOLUTE MUST. It won’t happen overnight, but without good (don’t need expensive) products and TECHNIQUES, along with a “curly” haircut, you can rock any length. I’d tell that bozo guy too shove off. Cut your hair IF you want, do need layers, and cut out negative people. WOMEN give so much. SO MUCH and sometimes the body shifts a bit. Heart and soul and smiles and laughter and knowing that YOU matter is what’s most important. Get there in your head. You’ll be much happier!
@@justinhickoxI could show you a bunch of triangular curly hair selfie, if it wasn't embarrassing. I HATE when my hair gets that triangle shape! That's one reason I usually wear it straight, if the cut isn't fresh, I've got a triangle. And while my OCD loves symmetry, a triangular hairstyle doesn't work! 🤣
I also have wavy hair and find it needs to be layered , so YES layer it. The low lights do bring a beautiful tone to her skin and deepth to the hair , it just lakes the gray POP!
Hi Justin, Beautiful Christmas decor in the house... love it! I think if Carol is bold to go short (usually I am not bold with the length), she will look gorgeous! Not that she isn't already, but the enhancements of her face structure - just like you always say, is going to make her look even more gorgeous! Amazing hair tips and love the way you disect each and every part of volume... I know how volume creation makes such an impact but at the same time, right hair cut to create right volume is sooooo important! I am in so much love with this subscriber edition of hair mistakes that age you faster! I look forward to Tuesday mornings for this (believe it or not)! Merry Christmas to you and your family from Charlotte, NC ❤
Hey! Thank you so much for that. I’m really glad that you’re liking the series. It’s only a lot of fun to put together and I think it’s really fun to be able to show all of the tiny nuances that go creating different shapes for different people. Thank you so much for all the support. I truly do appreciate that.
Great job Justin H! Yeah, I think Carol should get the style you recommend with the low lights. She is beautiful and can actually do your option of the short style with the long waves around her crown which will really show her beauty; because she is beautiful! Really appreciate your videos Mr. Hickox! 👍🌼 🌺
Great suggestions, as usually! I love the pic you suggested that's similar to her hair now. The shorter style is super cute, but I think what you suggested would suit Carol better. Merry Christmas!
I think that would be a very comfortable option for her as well as I think it would look great on her. I appreciate it. And Merry Christmas to you as well!
Awesome video! LOVE the ideas! I actually think though, that the low lights ( Although they do get nice dimension to the cut) someone detract from the soft beautiful muted undertone of her complexion… I think it would depend on whether her childhood hair color had once been more of a cool smoky brown or more like a beige dark blonde…
Love reading all the comments from my Sisters in Curls! I used lowlights when I was growing the grey and, to be honest, it's been out for a long time but I am missing some of that definition and am contemplating it again. Thoroughly enjoyed all the suggestions, Justin. I see myself in short hair and really like it, but yeah feels like more work. Giving thanks for the curls and finally knowing how to rock them! (50 years later, lol) Be well friends.
She should do whatever she wants-any cut would look fabulous because she is stunning. Change is fun!-and it’s not permanent ❤️Omg these videos are so helpful..giving me the “words” to describe what I am seeing and what is bothering me!! I keep doing the growing/cutting routine..and can’t seem to find perfect “me”. I have white hair ..I use lots of texture products and techniques.. but in photos I look like a poofy q-tip! 😩🤬 ..I love drama and extremes..I have shaved and grown. Nothing is my “winner !”. But maybe that is s good thing? I never look the same over the years!😂.. love love your channel and they way you give US the power. Thank you🤩
Justin, good call on Carol’s hair! I like it parted more to the side and shoulder length! Beautiful! I’d even go with a lil color as you suggested. Wonder what she will choose.
What a lovely lady…and that hair! Such beautiful color, texture, and volume! Love the longer solution for Carol. I think she would be stunning with that cut and the added lowlights. Now you have me thinking I need some lowlights, too, Justin! Btw, what a beautiful home! Happy Holidays!
Thanks so much for this! I have wavy/curly hair and keep trying to explain that I don't want a triangle shape, but stylist doesn't seem to understand what I mean.
@@virginiamoss7045 oh Virginia! Me too!!! I have only had 1 good experience about 40 years ago!! I’m 74 and still want to be relevant snd in style-but to “cutters” I’m to be ignored and zipped through the system. Watching Justin, I really see the difference. Merry and bright Christmas to you.😍
I like the layers and side part you suggested for Carol. I’ think a very soft side swept bang with that part would be pretty . Thanks for the tips on curly hair too
I always enjoy your content!! I have thick and wavy hair, so I have experienced the issues Carol has. Definitely love the shorter length and some lowlights. Carol does have beautiful skin and could go with the extremely short option too!
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. I’m so glad you’re liking the videos. And I totally agree, she does have fantastic skin and really could wear a lot of different lengths and shapes. It was almost hard to come up with just a few ideas as there are so many options.
My hair is similar and having it longer helps the bell shape I used to get. I am growing out my color as well and will definitely consider low lights as I progress. My biggest concern is not looking washed out as my hair grows out. I’m 60 so makeup is just as important as hair color and cut. I don’t know what my result will be but I do know I need a bright lip and maybe a little more blush going forward. Thank you for the tips.
Appreciate that thank you. I’d definitely consider the idea of short hair being a bit more of a stretch but I like to give different options sometimes.
I particularly love what you did with the lowlights. What an incredible difference! That really does make her skin tone rich and healthy looking. The slight shortening and thinning that you did at the beginning looks great too.
It’s so difficult because thick wavy hair can turn into a puff ball so easily when cut shorter or layered. It looked great in the photoshop though. I’m always very cautious with layers and shortening my hair too much else it turns into a lion’s mane. She’ll definitely need expert advice and a knowledgeable stylist.
@@jannwilkins5631 longer layers will give you a flatter top as poof at the bottom. What girly hair needs is scattered, uneven layers. They are layers that you really can't see but give your hair movement. You can do this with straight hair also. It is a beautiful cut for those who don't want to see layers or get poofy. Have fun finding a stylist that knows how to do it though. I should make a TH-cam video of how to do it since I am retired after 40yrs of hair.
I call that extra bulk around the jaw "dog ears". It's a problem every time I get my hair cut and I didn't know what to say to my stylist. Thank you for letting me know to ask for extra layers around the front.
I feel you are absolutely right about her bone structure supporting the shortest "curve ball" option. I feel she would look stunning with it-very modern, metropolitan, and chic. I also really like curve ball #2 where it was a bit longer, should could pull that off no problem as well. Even if she were to go with the more subtle suggestion of a little shortening, and the various larying throughout, you immediately SEE the difference in her face. The original photo looked slightly like she was frowning because the hair pulled her face down, but when you made those changes it looked like she was slightly smirking, it was super interesting to see that! Either way, I hope she responds back letting us all see what she ends up doing. She has such beautiful hair, I really want to see which direction she chooses.
Love the changes you made with cut....huuuuge difference! Then the lowlights add to that. The short styles are nice, but I feel that they're shorter than the model would like. (Perhaps I'm projecting. I'm a curly girl and I hate my hair shorter than my jaw.) Please let us know what she decides to do! Us curly girls want to know.
Thank you! And I totally hear ya, the shorter hair is a bit more of a stretch but I think she could wear it very well. But you’re definitely correct, it all depends on her comfort zone.
I love that short style, but it's not my hair. Even at that, my hair wouldn't hold a curl like that without a LOT of product. Carol is going to have a hard decision, your suggestions are spot on, I love how the low lights made her silver pop.
I really love the two not so curve ball styles. The curl definition of the first is amazing. The overall vibe of the second one fit Carol as it isnt a giant departure from what she currently has.
I agree 100% with that. I definitely like the idea of short hair on her just because I think she could wear it very well but I think the first two options would be far more comfortable potentially.
I think I like the chin length with low lights. I was in her position most of my life. It got in my face all the time; it doesn't work in a ponytail if it's layered; if you live in heat and humidity the more layers, the more it "grows". I had lots of "hair gear" ...clips, combs, barrettes, hairbands, etc. Sometimes they worked well, sometimes not so well. A few years ago when I started to grey, I decided to let it grow out as long as I could stand it and my hairdresser said he could cut it so it would straighten with a flat iron and stay for a few days. It worked great. Only problem was I started losing hair. LOTS came out, but I had plenty left. I liked it. My favorite length was at top of my shoulders. Then came COVID. I live in Houston and we stayed in the highest level forever. The proticals finally lightened up a little. (now we are almost doubling cases of Omicron variant and proticals are moving back up.) Anyway, during first COVID, I started cutting my own hair. Went from long to short. My hairdresser finally went back to work and has been shspin it. But now I'm confused about what I want. I'm now almost complety grey and 75 years old. Now I really can"t decide what to do. Don't wsnt to look too young or too old. What's a girl to do... ...
I love the low lights on Carol and think that the shorter style would be awesome though definitely more exposed than the long hair she has now. The shorter shapes emphasize her eyes as well as her bone structure and make her look brighter. Rock on Justin, so glad I just found these videos.
I think Carol should stay with her long hair vs short hair; there is more variety of styles with longer hair. And, since she sent you a pic with her hair pulled back/up, I think Carol feels comfortable pulling it up. I do like the low lights idea, for adding definition to her waves/curls.
I love, love, love these subscriber editions. Carol is gorgeous and could wear any of your suggestions, long or short, but short would require way more control and skill and whilst she might look fabulous coming out of a salon, with her hair type, it could be a nightmare to maintain it herself if she isn't skilled enough to style it. Also going from long to short requires a lot of courage. Some ladies love change and some are more reticent. I am a very confident person in real life but am a coward when it comes to any kind of big change with my hair, hence me having the same hair style for probably 30 years. Regarding lowlights. I totally get what you are saying they would do for her, but as she has spent the past 3 years growing out her dyed hair to let her natural hair shine through, to then go to a stylist and have them dye her hair, kind of defeats the purpose of going natural. I know this as I made the decision to ditch the dye 10 months ago and am embracing my natural white/silver hair and I now detest the horrible brown-orangey ends and I can't wait until I am fully transitioned as my natural hair is so healthy and shiney and gorgeous. I have very fine straight hair so completely different to Carol, but the thought of a stylist putting dye back in makes me shudder. Would love to hear Carol's feedback and which option she goes for and why.
She's certainly a stunning lady, and her hair is beautiful. The small changes you suggested certainly made a big difference and enhanced her bone structure. I think she'd suit the very short style as well. Thanks Justin, I'm loving your videos!
I have the exact problem that Carol has. My hair is curly & I can’t find someone who can layer it like this. I’m going to bring this video with me the next time I go for a cut! Thanks much for this. I love the way Carols hair looked in the photo you shared. I think that’s the perfect view.
Your cut suggestions are great Justin, I love getting a look inside your thought process. It looks like Carol’s growing out her natural color, which I think is gorgeous, and I would encourage her to stick with it and not add lowlights - I think there’s plenty of natural dimension hiding in there if Carol would amp up the definition of her curls and waves. The first real photo you showed (at 8:34) is of Mindy Gale who’s on Instagram and who has lots of curly hair technique styling content (and going gray inspiration!). The right cut is a necessary start, I think a bit of layering like Mindy’s would looks great on Carol, but then I would encourage Carol to try some different products and styling technique to add some definition to her amazing curls.
I LOVE LOVE LOVE these videos. My mom already crushing on Justin. The low light are so subtle with huge impact. On my list for me. Particularly love the cut/style option with model grey hair and blue shirt. Would love to see “updates” on these; adding ‘after’ pics if Carol took any suggestions and results. Anyway,Justin rocks.
About you filming in different locations, including nature, suits you. It speaks so much of who you are as a person and as a professional. You are creative and far from the same routine. you will always create something to break the routine. even being in the same location. As for the length of the hair, I particularly think it has a lot to do with whether the person has a youthful spirit. But most should wear shorter. I'm 64 years old and I have a young spirit, but I think long hair doesn't suit my face. I like your channel you are cool 😎 cat 🐈 very natural. thank you.
I loved this video because my hair is very similar to Carol's. I like the low lights very much. I have lots of layering in my curly salt/pepper hair. One thing you didn't mention was that she might try some curly styling products to give her hair more curl-definition like the first model-style had. If I don't use a curl activator and/or gel, my hair can look more blah. At 59 years old, I have finally figured out how to handle the curl and make it look defined and modern. Any of the hairstyles you suggested I like! Good Job, Justin!
I was having similar problems with the triangle-shaped hair, and my hairstylist gave me layers. I love it! This time I kind of have Joan Jett hair. It's my favorite cut so far, and it's wash-and-wear! No blow drying required.
I get a sense that Carol wouldn't be one to do a lot of fussing to her hair every day (blow drying, curling, straightening, etc.) and I think she'd look fantastic with either a swept back style or one that is bigger on top and on the upper sides and slimmer on the side. The photo of her with the hair pulled back was really attractive. I'd suggest a video talking about how to do pull backs (ponytails, braids, twists) or cuts that really lift and illuminate the face while letting the curl and body of the hair work for the person.
Super vid! Great ideas. I love the short, but all that awesome hair- well... fine to leave it. Might be fun to go short for summer and then wind up with the length again for winter? I think balancing things out is what the layers would accomplish as well as trimming up that portion in back- would make it just look a bit more polished/styled or freshened. The height on top via new part is great idea- could even rubadub the top with palm of hand (kind of teasing it) and then use a bit of hairspray to set. Or a pomade? Again, super vid! Super hair!
Great ideas for Carol!… she is a beautiful woman, with great bone structure!… I would die for her hair thickness!!!!..😂😂😂much love and appreciation, Justin!!!… Merry Christmas to you and your family!…enjoy your grand baby this Christmas!!!!!💜💜💜💜💜💜💜
My hair is now grayer and longer and similar to Carol's. This was great. I have gone short, but I feel like I look older. So I am definitely going to try layers and a more dramatic part. Thanks
It's strange in that I was just trying to figure out what to do about my hair color. I don't like the black or brown dyes in that they always turn a brassy brown. I think I may let it go natural and see what happens. I think what you did with Carols hair was perfect. Just what was needed!
Yep, I had too much taken off on the lower sides. I could see that the top wasn't supported by the thinned out base. Ugh. Still trying to train my stylist. And grow out those new layers now. 🤦 Love what you did with Carol's hair!
I really liked the photo of what Carol´s ´medium´length hair with more layers to reduce volume would look like. It´s beautiful and I think she would look stunning! I´m partial to short hair styles. It´s more daring but with her hair she can pull off the short style (definitely with low lights)!
I have that same problem... super thick, coarse, naturally frizzy hair. I love this video! I think Carol should get that super cute pixie cut! But a bit longer on top like the picture you suggested. Now I want to see the results of what Carol decides to do!
Lowlights, the medium styles like the model with the teal scarf, and new frames that are a more lifted shape and lighter color on the bottom would be excellent tweaks to look fresh and younger.
The longer cut looks great, I think it would suit her, she can save the shorter look for when she's older. I have exactly the same type of hair and have learned some neat tips today.... Thank you!
Good afternoon and Happy Holidays! I have been a subscriber for about 6 months and have totally enjoyed the videos. The views are always wonderful. Keep it up!!!!
I have very thick naturally curly hair also. The more humidity the more curl i have. Personally i have found general rule of thumb, lengh to 8 inches past my shoulder works best , so on a "bad hair day " i can pull it up i to a beautiful soft top knot and allow just a few wispy curls softly around my face . Front layers, to add softness. Severe looks age you, soft natural accent your features. And give a youthful appearence ..
So, what do you think Carol should do? Can’t wait to hear your thoughts!!!
Think the best for her is shorter in the back with some long layers on top.
I think the one you showed.
Very nice woman. Yes, shorter and volume on the top would be better. And full colouring would be nicer - my opinion.
And yes, I do smile 😊
go bestie👹
Oh wow send a picture of your results Carol. Baby steps is perfect. You are really pretty.
Hey! Very cool you responded! Thank you for submitting, you helped me as I have similar features and hair! Thank you.
@@bethoverton- thank you! I’m glad it helped.
Unstyled hair is frumpy no
Matter what the cut. It’s the lack of attention to the self that makes it stale
Are you still talking to your friend’s husband???
@@MAvila744 generalizations are never a good thing.
@@MAvila744 LOL
I am with you! I have had only one great haircut in my life. My stylist moved away and I have intermittently cut my own hair ever since. Thanks to TH-cam videos, I have been cutting my own medium length hair with layers and bangs for years. How I would love to have a Justin Hickox near where I live to really give me the best haircut!
i’m her teenage daughter and i took these photos! we have very similar curl patterns and it’s interesting to hear what you think she should do since i am normally the person she goes to for hair advice. i promise that she does smile, i’m not sure why she wasn’t during these photos 😂
I love you ❤️😘
@@canncat8615 love u bestie
AWWW hi daughter, I miss my Mom so.
If Carol is a smiley, fun, emotionally expressive person, I think it's important that the photo is showing her real personality- it changes your overall look-
I'm glad U said your comment.
I have hair just like that so I enjoyed the advice. I think perhaps a bit shorter and addd layers.
Agree - too easy to look like a cotton ball with a puff! lol
@@docannedc totally agree! I just got the last of the dye cut out of my silver hair, so it’s a bit shorter than I usually like it and my curls/waves are way off-kilter.
Yikes! A short bob with curly hair sounds like a knotty mess! (And old! Nothing says old lady more than a sharp bob)
I use several small hair claws along the top of my hair (which, yes, is layered) to lift my hair up from flattening at the scalp.
OMG, YES, that analogy was perfectly on point!
Loves the low lights which made her curls pop... I have frizzy wavey/curly hair like this lady and would like to try that on my hair
I also loved the "over-layered" blonde...? The shag cut. Very popular and so good for curly hair!
Hello.
A Bob...verticle cut and a little color perhaps and smaller glasses or contacts ...all done and very pretty.
I think you nailed it on that! Lifestyle play such a massive role. Well said.
As a curly haired girl this video was sooo good! Loved seeing your ideas for Carol’s hair…she’s a beauty and would look amazing with shorter hair 👍🏼
Super glad you did not just say she should not have long hair, but broke down the exact details of how to do the haircut right. I’m tired of the convention that woman have to have short hair. Yes, it could use shape, yes there is a lot of bulk there. I like the way you detail it
As a curly girl myself, I found this so helpful. The shorter layered bob is going to be my next go to. Thanks for these suggestions.
Shorter messy look . Moving the part over for sure . High light a must too. Carol you are brave to do this . Justin you can’t go wrong! Right!
I think her hair is beautiful the way it is. She has a natural beauty and thats what we women need to embrace!
Love the low lights. She's already beautiful, that really makes Carol's beautiful face pop.
Amazing!!!
Ok you were spot on with this cut and color. Keep the longer hair with dark low lights 👍
Thank you so much! I appreciate that.
Please show results, sketches results toomuch talking ,just demonstrate. Similar images ...i.m out of here boring
@@marianamosoeanu4760 Sorry you find my opinion boring. I wasn't addressing you.
@@susanschreyer7654 Think she meant the hairdresser, lol.
@@becourteous6414 Agree with everything you said.
Grows out before it grows down...OMG, YESSSS! #curlygirl
Ha ha ha, lol. It’s totally true though right!
Hi Justin,
Beautiful Christmas decor in the house...
(50 years later, lol) Be well friends.
i love the lowlight idea the most however if she wants longer hair, layering the top as well is a great option. You are amazing!!!!!!
I have hair just like her, so this was very insightful! Thank you.
Awesome! I’m so glad I could help.
You’re so welcome! Glad I could help. And you’re spot on, the triangular shape is definitely a thing with curly hair especially.
You are right! Getting a “stylist” is hard and also the vocabulary!! There are a lot of “hair cutters”…and those of us without the words!🤪
@@Barb6106 Haircutters are everywhere; true stylists are very rare; I've yet to find one after 72 years.
Excellent advise for her beautiful hair! I like all your suggestions for her except short hair maybe in 20 years she can try that one as well ;)
Appreciate that thank you.
I agree
Hi, I'm 56 and need help. (Profile pic is from 2011). How do I send in a request?
It’s so difficult because thick wavy hair can turn into a puff ball so easily when cut shorter or layered. It looked great in the photoshop though. I’m always very cautious with layers and shortening my hair too much else it turns into a lion’s mane. She’ll definitely need expert advice and a knowledgeable stylist.
If you turn into a puff ball, your stylist doesn't know how to cut layers in curly hair.
Longer layers would look nice just to give it a little little lift. I do understand what you are saying though I also have curly hair
Her hair is gorgeous! It isn't her hair making her look old, but her expression and the glasses. Smile and take them off and see how you look!
@@justinhickox one thing nice about going shorter that whatever your current length is with curly hair, you get more defined curls in my experience.
(now we are almost doubling cases of Omicron variant and proticals are moving back up.)
Anyway, during first COVID, I started cutting my own hair. Went from long to short. My hairdresser finally went back to work and has been shspin it. But now I'm confused about what I want. I'm now almost complety grey and 75 years old. Now I really can"t decide what to do. Don't wsnt to look too young or too old.
What's a girl to do...
...
I like your show better than anybody's. Very informational and easy to follow. And I get that you are outdoors a lot.
Thanks.
You are just amazing! You hit every problem and made the mistakes into assets! LOVE IT!!!!
Would love to hear Carol's feedback and which option she goes for and why.
i agree JMK....100%. I'm in the straight, thin hair; no dye for my salt & pepper color.
She's certainly a stunning lady, and her hair is beautiful. The small changes you suggested certainly made a big difference and enhanced her bone structure. I think she'd suit the very short style as well. Thanks Justin, I'm loving your videos!
What great recommendations, love the low-lights and layers, she should definitely go shorter. Lovely model. Happy Holidays to you and yours.
Thank you so much! I appreciate that. I’m so glad you liked the ideas. Merry Christmas to you as well.
Hey, thx for the Mindy Gale reference - new to me, and loving her page!!
Thank you for the reference!! Going to look up Mindy Gale right now!
I like your channel you are cool 😎 cat 🐈 very natural. thank you.
Thank you so much! I truly appreciate this and it definitely seems like you get me as a creative. I appreciate the support!
I like the last two hair styles. The short one and the one right before. And putting that color to make her hair pop, looks amazing!
Hi, the suggestion you had for Carol, is the solution to my problem, which I have applied to my hair!, very happy with my results thanks!
Love what you did with Carol's hair!
I cannot tell you how happy I am that I found this channel!! Wish I had discovered it before I cut my hair to a chin length bob. But it will grow.
I love what you did, layered mid length or short. Both so flattering and you are such fun!
I love the short cut. She has enough hair and beautiful face to pull it off. Bravo!!
