I love this course, I am unable to listen to anything else - and I feel I am learning Russian quickly and effortlessly. I have a comment here though. We are told that e.g. ' to drink' has no gerund. It would help to know then how to say: 'while drinking', or be told how to express ourselves equivalently.
Goran Senjanovic, thank you for your comment. Like I mentioned in the video, some verbs do not form gerunds, so you should just use the tense forms. For example, Я читала газету и пила кофе. I was reading a paper while drinking coffee.
As Russian, i shall say - this depend on context and connotation of this "to drink"
напиваясь :> - it's about a drunkenness :> and/or some perfect tense...
пияше :> - it's an ancient Russian :>> It's an archaic one, of course.
накачиваясь - it's a slang and a some comical connotation :> like a pump.
But that is it mystically for me in this video - why here "gerund" (or gerundive? ) was treated as "причастия or деепричастия"... in my insight of this "герундий" it is "отглагольное существительное".
Like плавать (to swim) -> плавание (a swimming)
петь (to sing) -> пение (a singing).

Hi -- So, for the verbs for which gerunds cannot be formed, how do you communicate the idea? "I was going home, by running past the school." or "I was doing my homework, waiting for my parents to pick me up. How do you achieve the idea of 'running past' and 'waiting for', the second actions in each sentence. Thanks

Would it be correct to say you could just take the ть off of the infinitive form of the verb and add я to create the gerund form?
S C , unfortunately, it does not work with many verbs. For example: жить - живя, использовать - используя, говорить - говоря.

@@farhadnawab7642 читая - тут мы не знаем сколько страниц в книге было прочитано, какая часть книги была прочитана , а прочитав - тут совершенный вид то есть прочитав книгу - с начала и до конца, целиком, завершив ее прочтение, "он много узнал". То же самое смотря и просмотрев.
