  • NOTE FROM TED: This talk contains a graphic description of sexual assault. This talk only represents the speaker's personal views and understanding of EMDR, which remains an ongoing field of study. TEDx events are independently organized by volunteers. The guidelines we give TEDx organizers are described in more detail here: storage.ted.com/tedx/manuals/t...
Trauma doesn’t have to be an isolating, numbing, or demoralizing experience. Instead, when we leverage our personal trauma, see it as an asset and take time to heal, we can move from isolation to connection and ultimately belong with each other-something our communities and our world desperately needs. Kelly Meerbott is a respected thought leader, author, facilitator, TEDx speaker, and leadership coach to successful leaders. Early in her corporate career, Kelly found her calling to coaching and training while working for a Fortune 500 company. Kelly Meerbott earned a B.A. in English literature from the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, MA and has completed post-graduate work in emotional intelligence from Case Western Reserve University, modern psychology from Princeton University, leadership development from the University of Pennsylvania and holds multiple trauma certifications from the Arizona Trauma Institute. In her spare time, Kelly launched a virtual group for women and people who identify as women called "Transforming Your Internal Narrative: From Burnt out to Bliss." She is releasing a 28-day self-guided journal by the same name and will publish her first book in the winter of 2022. This talk was given at a TEDx event using the TED conference format but independently organized by a local community. Learn more at www.ted.com/tedx

I've watched this several times, and each time I watch, I am even more amazed than the last. Kelly is so much more than a survivor. She is an example of taking control of your hurt, pain, and the negativity that comes a long with it and turning it into a positive motivating force. I wish I had the courage to allow myself to be half transparent and open as she is.

Emdr gave me dissociative symptoms and bad anxiety. My therapist wanted it to work so badly, that he seemed to be completely ignoring how uncomfortable I was. If you're a therapist reading this, keep in mind this may not work for everybody and you shouldn't push people with trauma to do something that isn't helping them.

Brave woman to share her inmost thoughts and feelings with the world. I totally agree with her. EMDR and psychotherapy in general is weird. It is awkward and deep down in my bones seems like it shouldn't be a part of the human experience. Like it was never meant to be a thing. Sort of like a twist in the universe that was not supposed to happen.
