Thanks for not being a fabric snob and embracing non-designer fabric choices. Not everyone can afford pricey yardage, and with a little creativity and ingenuity, you can make lovely quilts. This one is adorable. Nice job.
Thanks Sue! It's an interesting debate, isn't it. I've worked with some "designer fabric" that was complete garbage and have found fabrics that I think are really good quality at places like Walmart. And ultimately, I want a baby quilt to be used and washed - over and over again! It isn't meant to last forever. Thanks for watching!
I agree with you. I have used their fabric for years. Made beautiful items. And I wash my fabric just as soon as I get home no matter where I get it. They keep cutting down the sizes of the fabric department around here after remodeling.
Besides the trial of Walmart fabric which was great your tutorials are awesome. I get so much from them and enjoy listening to your explanations and the visual. Very complete. Thanks. I am enjoying getting acquainted with your tutorials.
I am a self confessed fabric snob after working in a quilt shop. In my older years now, I’m ready to see what I can make with “cheaper fabric”. ❤ If it’s not going to be an heirloom, it really doesn’t matter!
Hi Ann! I agree! But I can see where you get spoiled if you always work with a certain quality. It can be hard to know when a compromise is appropriate. Thanks for watching.
I love those charm squares! Wish my local Walmart had nice fabric like what you found in Hawaii. I am a fan of pressing seams open don’t plan on entering any of my quilts in a quilt show so I don’t worry about the quilt police.😂😊
Amen to that. My grandson years ago heard us talking and asked whom the Quilt Police was. It was so funny. I just made up something. He was about 5 then.
Hi Jean - good to hear from you! I feel like that trip to Walmart was a real win - I got some really cute owl fabric as well. And I don't go very often (living on the other side of the world!), so it felt like a lucky day. And I hear you about a judged show.... who cares what the "rules" might be - do what works and what you love!! Thanks for all your support.
I love your teaching style - and the way you go ţhrough your thinking process! My brain works along those same lines! Thank you for ststing that you used the oversized setting triangles from The Fat Quarter Shop's chart on your second and third quilts. I like to maximize my fabric use, but not at the expense of being able to accurately square things up!
Thank you for this video and free patrern. This is an excellent pattern for a baby quilt. I like that you gave the Walmart fabric a chance and used your stash and scraps.
Thanks Boo! The pattern on the squares really appealed to me and I thought I would give the fabric a chance. In the end, it's a baby quilt that I hope will be used and washed and used even more - it's not a heirloom or museum piece. Thanks for watching!
I’ve used these fabrics as Jelly Rolls! I currently have a design on my wall with these prints. It’s such a cute print, and as you said, they feel really good. I love them. I’ve made one of these chandelier pattern quilts, and enjoyed putting it together.
I'm so glad! Those animals are so cute and I couldn't resist (even though I generally don't like buying charm packs!). It was worth it in the end as these quilts turned out really well. Thanks for watching.
Hi Janet. I always shop "by feel" at place like Walmart. If it feels like good or decent quality, I use that as my guide. I have been burned a few times by the sizing that is put into fabric, but I've learned to identify the signs (fabric that feels like cardboard!!). Thanks for watching.
I, like you, have decided that when there are alot of seams, just press open. It's amazing how much easier it is to put all those blocks together. Thanks for sharing this cute quilt... blessings to y'all.
Thanks Vicki! I really don't like when a pressing strategy falls apart and I have to flip a seam; it makes these weird lumps that usually sink into the batting, but I still prefer a flat project. Thanks for watching (and being part of the Secret Press Seams Open Quilters' Club!).
At quilt retreat last October, my friend had made a chandelier quilt & that was the first time I had seen that pattern. It really is striking with a white/cream background. I am currently making my first on point quilt & I’ve been having a hard time sewing the set in triangles on each row end. Wasn’t sure how to line them up. TH-cam tutorials to the rescue! Now to put into practice what I learned.
You can do it!! And if it's not too late, be sure to cut the corner and setting triangles a bit bigger to give yourself some wiggle room. An extra can be trimmed off! Good luck with it - I'm confident you can do it. Thanks for watching.
Stumbled across this video and love your style. When I realized you are Canadian and grew up nearby, that just adds to the happy crafting feelings! Thanks for sharing your expertise!
Thanks so much Nicole! I appreciate your kind words. There is a great crafting community on TH-cam and it is fun to be a part of it! Thanks for watching.
What a fabulous, informative video! It’s such a treat to find a podcaster who explains things to those of us who are not experienced quilt makers. I can’t wait to try this quilt using your pattern.😊
Thanks Deborah! I'm glad you enjoyed the video. I hope you enjoy making this pattern and don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions. Thanks for watching.
Thanks Terri! I'm grateful for all the insights from other quilters and these sort of cheat sheets are a great time saver! I highly recommend using the "Kimberly" dimensions - it allows for a bit of human error in cutting and seam allowances. I'd rather trim a bit, if needed. Thanks for watching!
Michelle, you are so wonderful with all the thought and care you put in each video. The tips and information is very complete and leaves me with new ideas to try. I love the pattern and the quilt(s) is adorable. BONUS thank you fo all the patterns you post on your website. 🎶💐💖🫂
Hi Gigi - especially if it's going to be washed 1000 times and he might be into something different in a few years. I'm sure he loves his quilt from his grandma! Thanks for watching.
Love the way you were able to use fabrics that were cut wrong in a new project! We all cut fabric incorrectly some times! But there always is a way to use it. Cute quilts!!
Thanks Pam - don't throw anything out!!! You never know when you might be able to use it! 😜 Once I realized that the green squares were not going to work in the original project, I did wonder what I would do with them - especially because they were only 1.5 inches. I'm glad inspiration struck! Thanks for watching.
I find the super hero and other novely prints that my grandchildren like at Walmart in their fat quarter selection all the time. Only had one fabric that I ended up not using as it was too thin. Your baby quilts turned out lovely. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks Cynthia! I'll bet your grandchildren love that you sew with their favourite things! My mom is always making Star Wars and Batman things for my brother and nephew. Thanks for watching.
Very fun quilt. I do love the fabric. I saw you yesterday on Brenda"s zoom sewing day. Nice to meet you. The house blocks with a cat hanging over the roof would be hysterical! I live here in Oregon. The Army Corps of Engineers produced a digital calendar for 2022, I think it was for that year, that had the Dams on the rivers being tended, invaded by giant cats! Oh my! Take care. Marion in Oregon.
Hi Marion - nice to meet you as well! Brenda has done such a great job bringing people together. The cats were really funny and I might make a few extra blocks with the cats, just for laughs! Can you imagine one poking around the corner of Brenda's birdhouse? And the blocks from Kelley and Future Cat might also lend themselves to being invaded by cats as well!! 🤣
Hi D! Glad we've got perfect timing! The free pattern is available for download on my website at: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com. I hope you give it a try! Thanks for watching.
Hi Michelle, hope you're doing well! This Chandelier pattern is one of my favorites. The fabric is really cute and your quilts turned out very nice. And yes please to the pattern using the Drunkard's Path template (which of course I have - it seems that I have every ruler ever created)! And - I've been pressing my seams open for a long time. Once in a while it's necessary to press to the side, but if at all possible, I always press open - it's just personal preference, but I get better results. Take care!
Hi Beth - I feel like starting the secret "We Press Our Seams Open" club! Lots of secret members already!!! 😜 Thanks for your kind words and I'll work on the other pattern as soon as possible.
Yes, I want to be in the pressing seams open club too. I recently made a quilt with Waverly fabric solids. It turned out so soft and cozy with bright blues for the sky and pink, yellow, red, purple, and orange for the wonky stars in the sashing. Where did I find the Waverly fabric? Walmart! Your quilt is just so cute, love the squares and the sashing. It is so fresh and cheerful. The circle quilt is such a wonderful pattern to use up the rest of the fabric squares.
New subbie! I saw Walmart and was intrigued. I’ve used their paw patrol fabric to make a quilt for a 3 year old and it turned out great. Washed well and is holding up well too. I’ve also used a different charm pack to make a car quilt for traveling. When on a tight fabric budget (as a beginner), I always find nice feeling fabrics at Walmart and even Joann’s. Hi Peggy - I'm afraid I'm not really creative when it comes to the final quilting. I almost always do an all over free motion with a neutral thread. My friends keep telling me I need to branch out an try other designs, but I usually end up back with the quick, simple and easy. You can see some photos of the final quilting on my website at: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com. Look under the patterns section and there are some close up photos of the final quilts there. Thanks for watching.
Hi Ann! It is a useful chart to have. I aways use the measurements on the "Kimberly" side of the table - the larger measurements. It allows a bit of space for human error and some wiggle room. I'd rather trim a little than fall short. Thanks for watching!
Trying to determine where you are from because of slight accent! Canada, New York? I think Canada. Love the quilt and pattern and your video is excellent. Like how you discuss measurements cuts and note bias and grain!!!!!
Hi Beverly! You guessed it! I'm Canadian (from Ottawa) but currently living in Australia - so a bit mixed up. Thanks so much for your kind words! I hope you find other enjoyable videos on my channel.
my thoughts are, if you are a beginner especially, why not spend money on fabric that you would hate to make a mistake with. Practice with the "cheaper" fabric and then remake with the nicer quality fabric from a quilt shop.
That's a great point, DeNea! I also hope that baby quilts will be used and washed, and used and washed, over and over again. This is not meant to be a heirloom quilt that will end up in a museum; it's intended as a gift of warmth and love to be used. Thanks for watching.
I agree Vera! I aways shop by "feel" - paying attention to where there might be a lot of sizing in the fabric. And if it feels good, that works for me! Thanks for watching. Hope you are well.
There's nothing wrong with pressing seams open. I sew apparel and quilts, bags, whatever, even a lot of Halloween costumes and pretend clothes for the toy box. There are times when quilting, especially a pattern is duplicated for every block, your seams are going the same direction. If you press the seams open, you will have like color with like color. So when the patterns overlap, there's no huge lump, and there's barely a hint of a shadow in the light background, sashing. When it's time to make your quilt sandwich, you cannot see the shadow, and no lumps. ❤😊
Hi Sharon - I think many of us members of the Secret Press Seams Open Quilters' Club have discovered the hard way that pressing the seams open helps us avoid things like the show through and the lumps. I hate the show through! Thanks for watching!
Please correct your instructions for the side triangles. Your directions say cut 9” squares diagonally in each direction. These are too small. Your video with 10 1/2’ squares is correct…..I should have watched the video first. Love the pattern, however.
Hi Barbara - thanks for your note and my apologies for the error. Another viewer noticed a few months ago and I went back and updated the pattern then (March 2024). The updated pattern is available on my website. I changed the measurements to 11 inches to allow for a bit of imprecision in sewing. I'd rather trim a bit than run short. Thanks for watching.
Thanks for not being a fabric snob and embracing non-designer fabric choices. Not everyone can afford pricey yardage, and with a little creativity and ingenuity, you can make lovely quilts. This one is adorable. Nice job.

I totally agree. Thank you
Three baby quilts made from 80 charms. Wow. All three quilts are very pretty. They will make very nice gifts.
Thanks Arvetta! 80 charm square and A LOT of background fabric! 😜 thanks for watching!
Thank you for taking the time to teach and demonstrate how to cut and piece your creation. Much appreciated!
Thanks Natalie! Thanks for watching and I hope you give this a try.
There is no such thing as the 'quilt police'! A quilt will be warm and cosy, and welcomed, whichever way you set the seams! ❤👍from Somerset UK
Hi Elizabeth - I agree completely. A finished quilt that is used and loved is the best feeling for a quilter. Thanks for watching.
Pressing open takes so much more time, but I, too, am convinced my quilts come out better when I press open .
Michelle the green really does go well with these squares. Great idea making the chandelier quilt.
Thanks Rose! I don't normally buy charm squares, but couldn't resist the price and cuteness of these ones. Thanks for watching.
Michelle...beautiful quilts...great information and instructions...thanks so much ❤❤
No fabric snobs in this house! And baby quilts especially are meant to be used and washed and used and washed again and again.
Besides the trial of Walmart fabric which was great your tutorials are awesome. I get so much from them and enjoy listening to your explanations and the visual. Very complete. Thanks. I am enjoying getting acquainted with your tutorials.
Thanks so much for your kind words Connie! Do forget to get the free patterns from my website. Thanks for watching!

Hi Linda - I find I am pressing my seams open more and more - it just makes it easier to get things lined up and laying flat. Thanks for watching!

Hi Carla! Thanks so much for your kind words! I really appreciate your ongoing support. It's great to hear from you.
Really nice, both of them. I too made one for my grandson with fabric from Walmart. Nothing wrong with that !

Thanks Shirley! That's very kind. I hope you give this a try. Thanks for watching.
It’s adorable!!!!
Thanks Vera!
It is so cute!
Thanks Sonja! I hope you download the pattern and give it a try.
Thanks so much! I got the same charm squares from Walmart and I was trying to figure out what to do with them and then your video popped up! Amazing!🎉
Hi D! Glad we've got perfect timing! The free pattern is available for download on my website at: www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com. I hope you give it a try! Thanks for watching.
Another excellent video, thank you Michelle ( we are in Thailand and have found some fabric - your video helped with our navigation😊)
Hi Debee! I hope you have had an amazing time! Safe travels.
Your quilt sounds amazing and chaotic (in the best way) Linda!
Such a lovely quilt which I will absolutely make soon, thank you for sharing 😊
Thanks Amal! Thanks for watching.
Love the green 💚
Thanks Donna - It's my favourite colour and something I always gravitate to (despite the amount of blue in my collection!). Thanks for watching.
I shop my LQS when they have sales 😅
Thanks for sharing your quilt!

The pinking bugs me too, but I want scrappy , so I persevere. (I trim one side "a bit" really depends on the depth of the pinking, I then cut 2.5, put the @2.5 in my string box, the sub cut the 2.5 into a 2.5 square and a 1.5x2.5 rectangle. I'm ok with the little bit of waste, it is a byproduct of my creativity.)
Hi Aviva - that's a great attitude and a great approach. And I agree that despite my dislike of the pinked edges, some fabric in pre-cuts just has to be used! But I try to cut those edges off wherever possible. I learned the hard way when I noticed some major show through on a finished quilt. Too late to fix it, so a hard lesson. Thanks for watching.
Really cute!!
Thanks Wanda! I hope you will give this a try.
Love the chandalier baby quilt pattern and yes please, do write the circle pattern based on drunkards path. Thanks for posting. Enjoyed your presentation style. Have a great day!!
Thanks Terese! I'll get the circle pattern written up as soon as I can. Thanks for your kind words!
Great tutorial, thank you
Thanks Janet! I hope you will get the pattern from my website at www.bitsandpiecesquilting.com and give it a try. Thanks for watching.
I made a baby quilt with that same fabric 😊
Hi Betty - I'd love to see a photo, if you have one. You can send it to me at: bitsandpiecesquilting "at" gmail [dot] com. Thanks for watching!
I’m curious on how you quilted the chandelier quilts. I have a top and I’ve been thinking about it.
I have seen and bought some cute fabric at Wally World this past year but I never sa anything that cute in North Carolina! Lol
Hi Pam - it was a lucky visit, I think! I also picked up some super cute owl fabric that I haven't used yet. Thanks for watching!
Thanks for telling me where to look for math charts. I also press many seems open. Thanks again.
Hi Ann! It is a useful chart to have. I aways use the measurements on the "Kimberly" side of the table - the larger measurements. It allows a bit of space for human error and some wiggle room. I'd rather trim a little than fall short. Thanks for watching!

I buy a lot from Walmart. So I can afford to quilt.
I’m not a snob on fabrics either so long as it’s good.
I agree Vera! I aways shop by "feel" - paying attention to where there might be a lot of sizing in the fabric. And if it feels good, that works for me! Thanks for watching. Hope you are well.
