Sonic R Mania (SHC 2020) :: First Look Playthrough (1080p/60fps)

- Sonic R Mania is a mod of Sonic R made by Ryan Langley (aka. Rlan), featured as an entry for this years Sonic Hacking Contest.
So basically, this mod for 'Sonic R' here switches out all the textures from the original game, and uses sprites from 'Sonic Mania'.
Resort Island is now Green Hill, Radical City is Studiopolis, Regal Ruins is Mirage Saloon, Reactive Factory is Chemical Plant, and Radiant Emerald is Egg Reverie!
As mentioned from the creator on the entry page, a ton of effort went into this mod, converting all sprites over was a LOT of work. This also includes switching over most of the sound effects, all the music, and also including Snow and Rain versions of the stages too, which can I say, I left the weather option for this on random, and I was somehow given only Sunny stages, how convenient is that lol.

It's insane to me how it's been many many years since I've last played Sonic R on PC, like I'm talking childhood, probably say around 14 years. I never thought that I would get the PC version to work out so well but it was a lot easier to set up which was great!
For those who are interested in trying this out, there is a small description on how to install everything, but of course the first thing you will need is the game, specifically the 2004 version.

Yeah, it's a good technical achievement, but if you're familiar with the original game you can still complete it in half an hour, as this video proves!
It is actually a revolution. There are barely any full mods for Sonic R. And to see this is incredible.

Looks like a pretty good mod. The only thing I feel it could do without is the annoying noises when Tails and Metal Sonic are running.
I’m pretty sure those noises were there in Sonic R anyways so that isn’t really the mod’s fault, it’s Sonic R itself
Sonic R has bad audio balancing. As someone who played it before, I'd know.

I really love the work put into this mod.
I did at first think this was a fan made game that just got popular, with hopes that mah boiz, Fang, bean, bark, ray and mighty would be playable.
Still this is an amazing mod.
This didn't make me feel like I was Livin' The City.
I didn't know I had to survive.
It didn't keep that dream alive.

I have never played it myself, But I have seen gameplay so I can’t judge the game itself, But I really like the idea of it, And it looks like one of those very underrated games that don’t get enough love.
I loved playing sonic r. Both saturn and pc version. Wish I could get a working version easily now

Never in a million years would I have expected a Sonic R mod in Sonic Mania that would work and change everything down to the title screen! Brilliant! This is a phenomenal mod!
It makes great use of the Star Engine's 3D capabilities with plenty of 3D models!

I love this. The textures are REALLY good. That Green Hill Zone I think is more like what everyone expected when Sonic R first came out. Gotta say, it looks amazing. Studiopolis and Mirage Saloon look really good too.
AND, am I the only one that, as a Kid, felt that the Factory course felt a LOT like Chemical Plant in color scheme and feel even in the original? Needless to say, the mod fits PERFECTLY just like Green Hill Zone.
This mod is clean. Outside of changing maps, I don't know what else they could have done to make it any better.

I thought this might've been a recreation of sonic R using the special stage 3D engine in mania but this is sweet too, I like the fact its widescreen and it looks like it controls better, hope they add more to this one.
The hard work it must have taken to create the new landscapes, while still remaining faithful to the original Sonic R track layouts and character designs, this is awesome!
Does this fix the physics? It seems like you’re way more in control than on the original, I could be very wrong though
I think the physics are the same. This guy's just really good at the game.
Remember tight turning with the shoulder buttons in conjunction with the turning on the stick. Oh, and to accelerate with B if you’re playing the GameCube re-release.
If you map the controls like a racing game, it controls much better
People have always been anal about R’s physics, I dunno why, the game feels fine to me. Yeah it’s slippery, but not unplayable like some people make it out to be. I’m sure more than half of them haven’t ever played the game.
Sonic R was built off of I scrapped Car Racing thing. I've never personally played it but I've heard you're meant to play it like a Car Racer kind of game but don't know how true that really is.
For a texture swap this is pretty imaginative! I'd be fascinated to see how far this idea can go :)

Sonic R blew my mind the one time I ever played it. It was the first truly 3D 3rd person sonic experience. I played the Toys R Us demo for a good 30 minutes

I remember this game, it was over fifteen years ago when I first played it. I always had a hard time choosing which character I liked using more ... between Super Sonic and Metal Knuckles.
After seeing this, all I wanna say is, thanks for buying gems collection when I was 3 dad. I saw this, sonic the fighters, sonic cd, and Tails adventures, with fighters being my fav. This game was always super hard for me but I still love it.
I was half expecting this to be the Mania special stage gameplay turned into actual race courses, but this is very cool too

I like it a lot! The texturer fit Sonic better and the colors are really vibrant! It would have been amazing to be able to choose between the music you used and the old music, I'm a big fan of it. Great work!
The graphics here are actually more appealing than vanilla Sonic R
I Loved This Hack! And I Loved how the Creators maked the Sprites of the characters (Specially Tails Doll, I Love this Mysterious Character.), and I Waiting more updates, more like on the 3D Model of the characters.
I like the idea of having a remake off the Sonic Mania special stage's engine. I loved the original!

Sonic r is actually an amazing idea so seeing this actually gets me REALLY excited
As a hardcore Sonic R fan, I love this (texture work is top notch) but I would love even more if in the future we have new levels as well design as the originals.
This gameplays makes Sonic R, look like a functional game, with fluent controls.

Something about the pitter patter of Sonic's feet is kinda adorable. I thought it would get annoying but it kept being charming.
What’s funny is you probably could’ve gone through Chemical Plant Zone as Amy; the sheer amount of times Metal Knuckles glitches itself into a loop would blow your mind. 🤣

Awesome work, it's amazing how well done it is. I have always liked Sonic R and I think this mod shows and helps to preserve its possibilities. The only drawback is the sound that Metal Sonic makes when running, it's really annoying. It even overlaps the background music.
Radiant Emerald looks SO GOOD!
Hopefully this leads to full on custom levels and model mods, that would be awesome cause I love sonic R, it has such untapped potential.

Nice, it's cool to see mods on Sonic R cause i haven't seen a lot. It's not a perfect game but i found it is really fun and has a lot of charm. It'd be cool to see some mods to fix some of its issues, new maps and new characters etc (a "ultimate edition", if you will).
As for the mod itself, it's pretty neat but i feel they should have replace the Original Sonic R's models with those of Sonic Mania special stages (and perhaps import the running animation too). Also, i love _Sonic Mania_ with a passion but the music of Sonic R is a big part of it's charm, for me, so... i don't know.

This mod is dope! The only thing I could think of that would make it sooner is replacing the Metal Knuckles and Tails Doll Models for Mighty and Ray-then it would be Mania Plus.

This DOES look really good...but I thought it would be a 2D Sonic R with Mania graphics and Sonic R music. XD Oh well. I like the effort that went into this either way.
I played a bunch of Sonic R as a kid -my gaming standards were kinda low... ^^;- so thinking about what the game was before, I can totally appreciate the change! I can understand there's only so much you can do with this game but, appearance and music wise, it really feels like you're in completely different race tracks from the respective game!
I don't remember Metal Sonic being that noisy though... ^^;

Anyone else find it funny how Sonic R has that loop in the first track that you can skip entirely by running around? It’s like why even have it if you don’t have to use it? It’s like it’s only there for the novelty and nothing else.
