    The last one is definitely the last resort. Even in Beijing, you won't find many English speakers. I suspect that people speak but don't feel comfortable enough. Good thing for me is that I already knew plenty of Chinese and didn't get lost. You will definitely need these 5 phases.

    Can you please do a video on 外國人 choosing their Chinese name? I would love to hear your input on how should foreigners choose the proper Chinese name or themselves. Mines is 葉忠正 :)

    I’m heading back down to our local Chinese restaurant, (actually, only 1 person is actually chinese there-this is a very tiny town and I doubt most folks care that the owners parents were actually Vietnamese-as long as they have egg rolls 🙄). The girl who’s working there who’s originally from the mainland, has offered to help me. How do I add “please”, Qing?, to “can you please speak more slowly”? Thanks!

    Hi!! Make a video about how to do if I am new in Taiwan or China and I need to have a Chinese Name! Because when I came they gave me such an ugly name. Then, thanks God, I studied enough on time to change it.
    Some useful names, surnames and extra information could be great to help people to make a decision!
    I love watching your videos! Thanks a lot.

      Jose Daniel Espinoza Izaguirre there is a good video about this on the related youtube channel Off The Great Wall - explaining how Chinese names work and how they're chosen etc. You can pick a surname you like, probably which sounds like your western surname. Then sit down with a native speaker and go over some ideas for a Chinese-sounding name...

    Hello ben!
    At 0:43 you use 裡 and in 0:54 you use裏.
    I know they are the same if you write simplyfied里, but i am trying to learn 繁體字, what is the difference between 裏 and 裡?

    • @learnchinesenow
      @learnchinesenow  9 ปีที่แล้ว

      mahug lu Hi sorry about that, it should have been 裡 throughout, since that is what is standard in Taiwan. Actually 裡 and 裏 are two versions of the traditional character lǐ meaning inside. In the second one the part on the left of the first one has just been squashed and put underneath. The simplified is 里

    Just FYI, they understand Dian'r just fine in southern China as well, you don't have to change the way that you say it unless you are trying to sound local... which isn't going to convince anyone if you're as white as I am anyway...

    Hey Ben could you talk me through briefly the diffrence as between 会,能 & 可以?
    谢谢你!

    • @learnchinesenow
      @learnchinesenow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Yabbamita DyingBrainCell thats a pretty good explaination. 會 is used when you are have "learnt through studying" how to do something.
      能 is like "are you able to do something now"
      and 可以 is often used when asking permission to do something.
      The explanation above is pretty good, I'm just adding my 2 cents.
      Ben

    @ 2:48 - Why is the choice in the example 英文 and not 英語? It seems nutters to read the sentence "Do you speak English writing?".
    I learned Japanese for 4 years and am now starting with Mandarin. The choice of characters for "language" is puzzling to me. I see people writing in "common speech" (普通話) and now they are speaking in English writing....

    • @learnchinesenow
      @learnchinesenow  9 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      Peter John just the way it is bro, yes it literally means "English Writing", but that's the way most people say it in common speech, more common than 英語

    • @narcissawang79
      @narcissawang79 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      +Peter John Both 英文and 英语can mean English language. 英文 does emphasize on writing as it has the character 文 and 英语 does emphasize on speaking as it has the character 语. However, I think the difference is not important nowadays. Just like 中文and 汉语are interchangeable most times, 英文and 英语are interchangeable most times.

    • @Toumoriryuu
      @Toumoriryuu 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      +Peter John The others are right, but I want to make an odd little note. I can only speak for Guangdong, but if you use 中文 for spoken Chinese here, people will definitely note it as wrong, and may even point it out (although usually they won't). I don't know why it's different, 英文 is still used for both spoken and written English here, but they make the distinction when it comes to Chinese.
