    I'm a native Chinese and I must say this video is very professional. It’s rare to see a non-native speaker speaking Chinese with no accent.

    You're great at making mandarin sound easy for learners.
    I found your videos a few months ago about pronunciation of tones, but i was far too new at the language to soak it in.
    My girlfriend is from Taiwan and i've gone through the effort to learn Zhuyin on my phone and all the sounds feel much more natural to me now.
    I wish there was more content to learn mandarin with the zhuyin system, but i understand traditional mandarin is far less used.
    I'm glad i get to learn pinyin from this awesome content though!
    I'll just have to learn mandarin with my partner saying "we use this word instead" haha. It's funny how different it can be sometimes

    Hi Luke, As a subscriber of Mandarin Blueprint since last September, I was listening to this podcast and I remember on a previous podcast, you mentioned Dali as one of the most beautiful cities in China, I must agree as my wife is from Dali and although we live in Southern California, my in-laws still live there as well as we have real estate in Dali. In fact my wife and four year old daughter are there now during construction of our new house. I will be heading there in a couple of weeks and you're right, it is a very beautiful place and this lesson will be a good refresher as my Madarin is still not very good.

    Can somebody give a hint about the Xiexie.
    I think it was in one of the videos where people explain cultural differences between the West and China, it was pointed out that in China it's rather seen as a bit impolite if you say "thank you", because it suggests that helping each other isn't the default. It actually makes sense to me. And also a friend who worked in China for several months confirmed this.
    However, i watch a lot of China travel vlogs and there i often see Chinese people saying Xiexie, too. So now i don't know, how accurate the above claim is.
    Maybe it's more like a regional thing if Xiexie is seen as polite or in contrary impolite?
    Or maybe they wouldn't say Xiexie to other Chinese, but they use it because they know that those Western tourists want to hear it?
    Or does it depend on who you talk to, if it's friends, family, colleagues?

    • @韩成林-z4c
      @韩成林-z4c 5 หลายเดือนก่อน

      It's a white lie, just to get closer. In fact, no one doesn't like to hear thanks, and it's no different in China. Some Chinese express dissatisfaction after hearing the thanks, but most of the time they pretend to do so. If you take it seriously and stop expressing gratitude in the future, they are likely to get angry instead. It's a bit hypocritical, but usually not malicious. There are more extreme cases. Close friends can also express intimacy in rude or even cursing at each other, but this phenomenon is not common. My advice is to always express gratitude, because the Chinese often say that "礼多人不怪" (politeness is always welcome).

    • @MandarinBlueprint
      @MandarinBlueprint  5 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

      That can't be right; it might possibly be true in the wild west world of pre-economic-boom China, but you'll struggle to find any Gen-X'ers agree with you on that. Saying 谢谢 is still very common and polite in modern Chinese society. One possibility is that perhaps this is talking about immediate family members. I can think of situations where it's extremely strange to thank a parent or sibling, but it is not always absolutely the case; sincere thanks to family members in certain situations is still possible, though less common than with other people.
      Another possibility is using a different tone of voice - note that this "tone" isn't the tones for pinyin - you can say 谢谢 in an insincere tone and it would be interpreted as sarcastic. But this again, isn't culturally specific to China, and you can do exactly the same for English by saying "thank you" in a deadpan voice while rolling your eyes.
