Yeah it’s truly an excellent feature. Super Mario all stars was the first time I beat most of the Mario games contained within it, simply by being able to retry and come back later.
Super Mario all stars is STILL, to this day, one of the very best next gen remasters.
You get improved graphics, identical gameplay, new features, and a compilation of everything from the last gen in one box, with unreleased extras.
And it’s not emulated or anything, no added latency or bugs.
Truly a gold standard on remasters.

No lie, I was really looking forward to today's episode because I am a huge huge fan of Super Mario All-Stars. It's one of my favorite games for the SNES. I always come back to play it whenever I can. When the truth of the matter of being that it was the very first HD remaster collection, it did actually take me by surprise. Probably why I had no problem purchasing not just Kirby Superstar but Ninja gaiden trilogy for the SNES: I guess I have always been a fan of the collection games thanks to Super Mario all-stars.

@@jaythomas468 so one of the main (and most annoying) changes in super Mario bros 1 in the all stars pack is that if you jump and break a brick as big Mario it takes your momentum away (unless you duck for some reason...) and you lose your speed. Original did not do this nor do any of the other games so it can be very jarring. The patch puts it back to the way it was so you keep your speed and momentum and keep moving forward.

Yes I did finish the whole collection as a kid! My parents bought the SNES with the All-Stars version that had Super Mario World. We had recently emigrated at the time (with no wealth) to Australia. I was 7-8 years old, and under some fortunate circumstances my parents were able to afford a SNES (they always thought the Mario games were wholesome). I distinctly remember playing through Super Mario World at the time when I had chicken pox with a whole heap of time off school!!! Good ol' days :).

Mario All-Stars didn't keep the animation the same because they were trying to "keep everything exactly the same." they used most of the exact same code for the gameplay. It was the easy path, and anything else would have been hard. The SNES CPU architecture and graphics chip were designed to make porting from the NES easy. There were some bug fixes between the versions and changes to account for the new graphics and hardware, and some bugs like world -1 wouldn't have worked if they did keep the code the same.

Back when I was a teenager in the mid 90s, my bowling league held a fundraiser selling candy bars. I signed up. There were various prizes for selling certain amounts of candy, and the top prize was your choice of either a Sega Genesis or Super Nintendo. I basically threw a box of candy into my locker at school and sold them to my classmates during lunch, and at the end of the two or three months or however long the fundraiser lasted, I got my Super Nintendo, which came with Super Mario World, as well as a mail in form for a free copy of Super Mario All-Stars. I still have that SNES hooked up to my TV, and I still play the copy of All-Stars I got with it from time to time.

All this talk about Landstalker, I'm surprised there was no mention of Time Stalkers for the Sega Dreamcast. It's not exactly a sequel, but Nigel and Friday were included (and I think the former was one of the playable characters). It's another one of those games that seems to have been largely forgotten by everyone, though given how different it is to Landstalker (isometric action platformer vs. turn-based RPG with randomly-generated dungeons and monsters you capture for your party), it's not too surprising.

While Super Mario All-Stars was mostly "Accurate to the originals", there were a few bugs accidentally introduced. In SMB1 and Lost Levels, they apply the wrong direction to Mario's vertical velocity when you break a brick. You can see the bricks pull you upwards rather than eject you out after you break them as big Mario.

I loved Landstalker, I remember a few of the things about it, like you could buy a Shortcake item. If you offered it to Friday the fairy that flies with you, she'd either be happy you gave her a gift and heal you to full, or she'd get insulted because she doesn't like to be called short and bring you down to one hp. There was also a single tree you needed to make a bridge in the massive last area of the game, but you had to do things in a specific order. Do it wrong and it won't let you cut the tree, resulting in a soft lock and you'd be stuck.

While Landstalker wasn't something I played a lot as a kid, I _did_ play A LOT of Dark Savior on the Saturn. It was pretty cool to have a villain hyped up with "can kill people with one hit", and see the result of that throughout the game (examining some corpses would give text along the lines of "One punch killed him").
It remains one of my favorite Saturn games, alongside the likes of Dragon Force and Guardian Heroes.

Back in 2013, I saw a boxed copy of Strider Returns at a Goodwill. I hadn’t played a Strider game yet at that time but heard good things about the series and remembered Strider Hiryu from the Marvel vs. Capcom games so I was very happy that I would finally be able to experience a Strider game for myself. Then I looked up reviews for the game on my phone and immediately put that game back on the shelf. “Brutal” isn’t even the word for what I read about Strider Returns.
Oh and, as far as Super Mario All-Stars is concerned, The Lost Levels can eat corn the long way and choke on it.

Loved this episode! It's funny because, just when you were about to mention the second game, I thought about Landstalker. And then, BAM, you started to talk about it! I LOVE that game! I ALSO got to get 98% completion. Now I wonder, could it be that heart container that you mentioned that was so difficult to find the one I need to fully complete the game?

Oh, man, Landstalker! I remember really enjoying that game despite the isometric platforming in some spots being hair pulling hard to deal with. It really did feel like a Zelda game it some ways and given the main character sort of resembles Link and the nymph Friday is basically a fairy... Shame that the sequel never happened, or that Sega would ever even revive the franchise given all they do now is Sonic stuff.

1995: 13-year old me is exposed to the WWW for the first time. My destination of choice: the official Nintendo page on AOL. DKC2 was still new and shiny, so Diddy and Dixie were on the main page and made you feel like you were somehow sneaking into the Nintendo Treehouse. There were actual Nintendo staff moderating the chat rooms back then, offering help in the chat rooms for everyone's favorite games. But they were also chat rooms... we all know how that's turned out...

A friend of mine (from ATX), told me how to change a single line of hex code, in order to fix the brick momentum stopping bug in Super Mario All*Stars in 1993. It bugged me from the start, since I play SMB1 while running and breaking blocks. The bug caused you to come to a complete stop. The 3 byte hex fix totally fixes that. The IPS SNES/SFC patch was floating around on IRC in 1993 a week after the game his BBS's, but I don't think it ever got an official "scene release". I saw someone else ended up repackaging it a few years ago. I really haven't thought about it since I've always just been playing the fixed rom. It's certain worth watching though.

Surprised there was no mention of Time Stalkers for the Dreamcast when you brought up Landstalker. Not only was Nigel a playable character in it, but also had the greatest main protagonist name ever, Sword. Seriously the main characters name is Sword.
Also Super Mario All Stars is Amazing!! Would say it's one of my all time favorite SNES games, but that's kind of cheating since Super Mario Bros 3 is one of my favorite games of all time.

That Brick Physics bug REALLY bothered me about Super Mario Bros. It's like you were being vacuumed up.
I watched a source code analysis one time, and it's actually a one-line fix to get the old physics back.
I did, at some point, beat The Lost Levels. I distinctly remember making it to the "lettered" worlds. It made me feel like I was somehow breaking the game.

Basically, the change in Y velocity (after hitting a brick) was negative of what it was supposed to be. So you got pulled upwards instead of knocked downwards. Hence why it's such an easy fix.

I love Super Mario All-Stars, i had a Super Nintendo when i was a kid so i knew that there were older Mario games, but i couldn't play them, so i got this game for my birthday and i loved seeing the box art and the year the games were released, seeing how the controls were mostly the same considering that Mario 1 and Lost Levels's controls were way stiffer than Mario World, but the graphics, the remade soundtrack, the save feature and being able to select which world you wanted to play made them feel brand new, not to mention that this game's version of Mario 3 is just pure gaming bliss.

The Aquatic Games had a Mega Drive release as well which I remember playing when I was young - definitely one of the finger-breaking button-masher type of sports game (although you could run over water if you were fast enough in the 100m Splash, which did give you some sense of achievement), and I remember, trying over and over to get to that upper level on the trampoline event. The game was a spin-off of the James Pond series of platformers (the red fish-dude is James Pond), although as that was a British game it looks like they removed the branding for the US version.

The Genesis 6-Pak is very important to me, tbh. One Christmas many years ago(I forget which one), my uncle got me a Sega Genesis with the 6-Pak cartridge. I was so freaking pumped. I remember playing 2 player on Streets of Rage with my brother to try and get the bad ending(spoilers: it didn't feel good to see at ALL), and I think I even came close to beating Death Adder in Golden Axe.
I've since lost it, but thanks to how cheap it was to find online, I got the cartridge with box & manual tucked away somewhere. I'm so glad it ended up being pretty cheap, cause it's very important to me.

I didn't have an SNES growing up, so my first experience with The Lost Levels was with Super Mario Bros. Deluxe for the Game Boy Color. I don't recall ever making it too far in it. That said, at some point while I was in college, I did beat The Lost Levels on the SNES without using any warps. Had to retry a lot though; made me glad All-Stars didn't have limited continues.

  • @SteveBrandon
    @SteveBrandon 10 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Yeah, Jared's probably right about Super Mario All-Stars being the first game collection with updated graphics. I can think of "HD" (as in graphically-enhcanced) re-masters that predate Super Mario All-Stars, most notably remakes of several Sierra Online games like King's Quest and Leisure Suit Larry, but I suppose the stickling point here is that they weren't in a collection (maybe there was a bundle, I'm not sure). Another contender that I could think of off the top of my head was Zork Anthology, a collection of the early PC roleplaying game series where I think at least the first Zork game got graphical enhancements not in the original release (which originally didn't have any graphics at all, just text), but I Googled it and that one came out in 1994, a year later.
Landstalker is a game I never played until I got the Sega Genesis Mini. It's one of those isometric games where I like the perspective from a graphical standpoint (Gamepro really ought to have given it a full red manic smiley face for graphics) but I find it very awkward to play with the default controller, and, unlike my actual Sega Genesis, I don't currently have a third-party Genesis Mini controller that handles diagonals better than the default controller. (Same goes for Light Crusader, also on the Genesis Mini.)
I'm fine with most sports games only getting a brief mention but we're coming up on the 30th anniversary of the mighty NHL '94 in a few weeks. Some people claim NHLPA Hockey '93 is the best of the series but I go for '94 since it was the first game with both the NHL and the Player's Association licenses. SegaRetro lists it as being released in September 1993 while Wikipedia says October 1993. I can pretty much confirm it would have to have been September because I got it for my birthday on October 2nd and I'm 99% certain that I rented it before I got my own copy.
I need to get the Sega Genesis 6-pak, I don't have my own cartridge copy of either Revenge of Shinobi or Streets of Rage, just the CD collection that came with the Sega CD, and neither of them are on the first Genesis Mini. I know they're on the Genesis Mini II but I don't have that one because the shipping to Canada from Japan would've been too much and also, I think the Revenge of Shinobi on the Mini II is the de-Spiderman-ed version.
