I first saw this video 10 years ago, and watching it again now, I am still gobsmacked by elegant design and careful attention to detail that Gary puts into every one of his creations. Nowadays, I am proud to call Gary my friend, and he's still living the dream with more fantastic vehicles coming out of his workshop. A true American treasure!

Agreed. I caught myself holding back a tear or two as well... just magic to see such an amazing machine being driven and appreciated, by men that are soooo passionate about automobiles, (instead of leaving them indoors for decades, because they are too precious.)

The late 30's was the heyday for boat tail cars.Much love to Gary for this most proper interpretation.

Jay leno"s Garage is the best show on TH-cam No other show comes close to the amount of content that he puts out with each one of his episodes. Its not just about the cars, its also about the amazing people that are behind the making of these works of art and amazing machinery, and the history of it all, and he grasps each and everyone of those points every time. Great Series Jay, keep up the Great work. I just wanted to let you know all of us enjoy your work and this hobby, thanks for sharing!

I'm building a Special here in Ireland from various 1920s cars and bits, and I find myself returning to this video for inspiration more often than any other. I love it. I'm afraid I'm in agreement with most people regarding the fenders / wings, but I can see that they've been perfectly executed, and actually if they'd been original, i.e. made by some of the more flamboyant pre-war coachbuilders, most people would be praising them and thanking this gentleman for having preserved them. (Plus plenty of crazy Indian potentates back in the day were buying RR chassis and having bodies built on them to imitate swans and the like, so they could be worse. Plus they're not integral, so he or a future owner can easily swap them out for more conventional ones.)
But forget the wings - my God, everything else on these cars is perfection. The designs, the details, the build quality, the exquisite metalwork and woodwork... these machines are complete visions of beauty. I adore them.
P.s. I also love the driving music - totally reminds me of late-90s / early 00s Ibiza trance soundtracks... anyone know what it is?

The fenders remind me of a boat's wake. At first I didn't know how I felt about them, but when I came to that interpretation, I came to like them.

I've appreciated so many of the cars Jay Leno has shown, but these fenders (wings) look all wrong. I know that lots of these cars would also be dangerous in a collision, but to add these which look absolutely lethal just seems to be taking it too far. They also look odd with the holes in the supporting struts which doesn't feel right with the period.

The fenders stuck out for me also. I like the open wheel look, it adds a racing feel to the car, I think a bonnet type fender would look a bit classier and blend in better. With the shake in the fenders at speed or on an uneven piece of road you have to wonder how long they can hold their shape before the wind bends them even higher. Love the boat look, as well as the aviation influence in other cars of the age.

Beautifully done, makes you realize how much thought goes into a modern car, things like not being able to fall out if you hit a bump or swerve a bit, hate to see what happens if you lock the brakes, of course great job

Man I guess I was lucky as I got to get up close in personal with a boat tailed Rolls in the early 90s just starting in auto parts. Trucker buddy of coworker was hauling several high end cars bought by a Japanese businessman who wanted them shipped overseas. He stopped by to visit his old navy buddy and I got invited to check out his cargo. Can’t remember the others like 1 or 2 more but the rollls with boat looking details I’ll never forget. Especially the quality woodwork.

  • @smokeyjoe7251
    @smokeyjoe7251 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

Rather gratifying to see this level of craftmanship, inspired by a love for the automotive, still being applied today.
And for those purists who despair that these are not 'original' cars, coachbuilders of the 1920s varied massively and used wood and other biodegradable materials and so even ten or so years later the original bodywork would have rotted through anyway. Original bodywork is literally rot. This coachbuilding is inspired and preserves a worthy heritage while affirming a new legacy for future generations to admire.

These Rolls Royces remind me of the 17Ex phantom 1 built by Jarvis of Wimbledon and owned by Maharaja of Kashmir, it was an experimental car for Rolls to achieve 100 kmph and then sold to Maharaja Kashmir because it could be driven in mountainous terrain with ease. That Rolls was also known as an extraterrestrial dragonfly.

Jay is a true car guy. I remember when he was doing a video on a 60's Chrysler 300. He said "It's more fun to drive a slow car fast, than it is to drive a fast car really fast." You get that from a lot of the cars that he does. He's a true car guy. Drive it, no matter what, and understand the nature of it. I feel the same way about an 80cc ATV. It's slow, but it's so simple, it becomes a part of you.

I think it is amazing that these cars were saved and re-built in the spirit of how the luxury cars of the day were built originally. By that I mean RR delivered a chassis and a coach builder did the bodywork. I admire the history of the donated RR becoming an ambulance hearse. That would have also been an interesting restoration. If it were not for this enthusiast these cars would have been left to rust so in that respect even turning them into rat rods is better than letting them become re-bar.

I think the the overall sportster design is nice with the lovely boattail. Although the aero-inspired wing supports are a nice touch, I find the wings (fenders) a bit odd and ungainly on these cars. I agree that the dual-hinge engine hood is an improvement, but the little centre windscreen to line up with the hood is a bit pernickety. But it's all a question of personal taste.
The overall work quality is brilliant, with fantastic attention to detail.
