Found my way here from a TH-cam Short. I've never been much of a Boat Tail fan but this project has got me liking the style. Beautiful work and if I wasn't so old and decrepitude I would want to try something like this. I did a lot of woodworking and manufacturing but this is a lot if work for sure. jack
Please don't leave us hanging. I would love to see more. Oh BTW the flat head is the correct answer on the motor. It i different when restore a car all original. I understand these projects though I started on my 53 truck 5 years ago. It is getting close but a ways to go still. All the drive train is done except the drive shaft and I spared no expense. Full body off mustang 2 front 4 link rear rear with a full professional built sbc and all the goodies.

Stick a model B engine with insert bearings and pressure oil in it with a more modern 3 or 4 speed and hydraulic brakes. A lot of work but it will look beautiful when finished
While in college in Denver in 94-99 for Industrial Design, I built a complete custom rolling chassis for a 29'ish Ford 2 door sedan using a Ford 300 inline-6 and a 4 speed trans. The rear end was a Ford 9" and the front straight beam had quarter elliptical leaf springs that made the front end look like it was just hanging out there. I had an old 29 steel Ford body for the car but as I approached the end of my chassis project, a wind storm dropped a 100 year old oak tree that flattened my sedan body sitting out behind the garage. I spent a year pondering my options and although the project never was officially finished I toyed with building a complete "Woodie" style 29 sedan body. Now fast forward 20+ years and I own a small custom shop building vintage motorcycles, I have acquired a complete 41 Chevy truck cab that will fit on my old chassis. I plan to join the two sometime later this year. Thanks for the video, it's always cool to see how other people think outside the box to solve a problem.
What a great project! You are obviously a serious craftsman and know what you are doing. I respect your well equipped shop and and proper safety procedures as well. Looking forward to seeing the finished project.
Nice work, I learned a lot. That's going to be a work of art. I'd look at using an old straight 6 Mercedes. Stay with the artistic theme since you don't want to race or risk a project like that.
Hello there cowboy here just watched your boat tail project great job she's a real beauty I'll be following along can't wait to see her finished all the best remember always be safe healthy and happy God Bless 🤠
Very snazzy looking vehicle and well done, but I have to tell you that an old Dutch friend down here in the Dordogne beat you to it by a couple of years. He is good with wood and has built boats and even aircraft but was looking for a project a couple of years ago and came up with the idea of a wooden car. One of our other Dutch friends is a Citroen 2CV fanatic (he has a fully restored 2CV, Mehari and he's just finishing a Forgon, which is a 2CV van) and he found an Ami 6 that was up for sale partially restored because sadly the owner had health problems. However, he'd fully restored the engine, chassis and running gear and my friend acquired it and sold its body (which wasn't attached to the chassis) and set to building a wooden body for it. He doesn't have access to the fairly advanced woodworking technology that you have so what he came up with is a bit more angular but a fine item nevertheless. He needed some help with the wiring loom but got all of the systems working and the best thing is that although it looks nothing like one, the inspector here in France turned a blind eye and gave it a Controle Technique as though it was still the original Ami 6 that makes it road legal in France. I've got a short video of it that I haven't uploaded but I think now that TH-cam is looking for shorts maybe I should if anyone's interested.
Awesome Build, Very Vintage, personally I would keep the Banger and just redo it, but I would have a Flatty on a engine stand just ready to go. Honestly with all the channels I watch on building yours is the most original and takes us all back to hot roddings roots and the way they constructed cars. Bravo your a breath of fresh air that we all needed to see. Thank You 🙏
When I do ships I run the planks on both sides at the same time. And you're definitely right, when you get to curvatures it gets tricky with a lot of custom shaping and twisting of the planks. I like to use spruce, it seems pretty friendly.
Fantastic job. I built a model a woodie out of Birch. Came out cool. Sold it before I got to drive it. Somebody wanted it more them me. I love the build, once they are done it is time to build another one

Interesting. Reminds me of my all-time favorite car, which is a 1924 boat tailed Hispano-Suiza that they only made one of. It was screwed together tulip wood, pontoon fender that were made later in its life and had copper plate to finish of the tail. If it didn't inspire this build you may want to look it up.

I saw something similar done, but the wood strips were support for plaster. The plaster was shaped, sealed, and painted in preparation for a fiberglass mold construction over the plaster. The mold had at least 4 parts to it because the rear of the body was not a boat-tail like yours. The rear was more bulbous. Your wood body looks very nice. Another way to do this and it might have been faster was to use polyurethane or polyisocyanurinate foam boards glued to the ribs and shaped to the way you wanted. Then fiberglass and resin applied to the outside and sanded smooth. Then you would have a finished body. You could then use the finished surface to create a mold. It would also involve making templates so the right and left sides of the body come out the same. Are you going to lower the chassis a few inches or maybe create an underslung?
