      SimplePhil lol or if you live in Canada where we can't really own ARs it's not just about nostalgia! Don't get me wrong, the nostalgia is there still but this solid piece looks like a real workhorse. I really want the SBL, we can't have more than 5 round mags so 6 and 1 in the chamber of .45-70 with a lever action (as opposed to bolt) sounds like a show stopper for anyone in my country except for maybe law enforcement and those toting restricted ARs. I'm almost drooling.

    I think it's because that's exactly what your hunting guide is supposed to be ready to do at any time. The guide is not really hunting for game for himself, but part of HIS job is to protect his clients from dangerous game. Something handy and powerful is "just what the doctor ordered."

    Dear Hickok45, at least you got the fame you deserved in Germany at least - with a very serious german newsletter posting a (positive) article about you online. Perhaps you know the problem with pressures of the 45-70 in Germany...you got the SAAMI pressures, we got the CIP pressures, which minimizes the use of the 45-70. Many people over here got the .450 Marlin instead, which is an exote in America and here in Germany, but can bring our lever action rifle´s .45 bullet´s to velocities that you can easily achieve with a Marlin in .45-70 without breaking the law. So, here´s a little bid from german fans: Please do a video on the .450 Marlin lever action Guide Gun rifle. Thank you, Sir.

    • @jamiehess4211
      @jamiehess4211 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I bought one for $550 USD in 2012 when ammo was scarce and they were illegal for hunting deer (live in Ohio). When Marlin was sold to Remington the company stopped making the 450 and 444 guide guns and concentrated only on .45-70. Also, hunting laws changed and they're now legal to use. Unlike the .45-70s the 450s were not Magna-ported and the recoil is severe, even with a recoil pad (more a solid push than a kick). They're rare now and prices have gone up a lot...about $1000-1200 used.

    Everybody seems to be big on AR-15's but I love these lever action guns. There is so much history there with the 45-70. The fun you seem to have shooting is contagious. I envy not having access to a track of land where I can set up bottles, silhouettes etc. and just fire at will. Great video.

    i just took the risk and bought this exact guide gun that Hickok45 is showcasing here. i bought a brand new one (Remington made) knowing all the horror stories about them. honestly, its a great gun. i compare it to my three, 1960's 336's that i own. i did change the sights, front and back to Skinner peep sights. shoots great, locks up tight and cycles smooth. i think Remington is finally getting it figured out

    Have had mine for more than 15 years and it’s one of my favorite guns to shoot. Heavier than it looks. Does kick with some of my (safe) hand-loads, but a good after market butt pad helps. Even in an early 80s NRA Hand-loading manual the .45-70 is described as “ suitable for even the largest North American game “.
    Thinking of that, I recall how early in the Jurassic films they were using ARs to shoot dinosaurs. Unsuccessfully. Thankfully Chris Pratt character carried a custom Guide Gun staring in Jurassic World!

    My go to gun at the cabin. It also fits nice in the UTV roof, gun rack mount, on the way in. Try getting a 300 WSM or 308 out quickly...not happening. (barrel length) Its a nice accurate gun, with great bear knock down power. A friend got me started with the lever actions, and I thank him. Think I need the stainless version sitting on my front porch. Really like the history of another video of the lever gun and Winchester. Keep up the good work with the history of guns. Very informative.

    I love Marlin rifles. My rifle as a child was a 18 shot Marlin .22 with scope I got one Christmas. I wish i still had that gun. I had to pawn it and never was able to get it back :( Even more I want my grandad's old .22. It was a pump .22. Wonderful little gun.

    Back about 1970 I bought a Winchester customized model 94 that was the equivalent of this guide gun. It has a barrel from a model 1886 (original caliber .33 WCF only used on that model) rechambered to 444 Marlin. Barrel length is 20 inches and it has a ghost ring receiver sight. It is a light gun, and with muzzle energies in the 2600 ft-lb range, the recoil is brutal even with a recoil pad. I generally shoot the 265 grain bullets,but the twist is fast enough to stabilize heavier cast bullets.

  • @13aceofspades13
    @13aceofspades13 9 ปีที่แล้ว +8

    • @13aceofspades13
      @13aceofspades13 9 ปีที่แล้ว

      lol, my dads muzzle loader, one shot got my shoulder sore, the thing weighs NOTHING, its got this tiny paper thin synthetic stock, the only weight too it is the barrel, so when it goes off it pushes your shoulder hard. then my Rugar M-77 MKII .308 has fair recoil, but after about 20 shots wearing nothing but a teashirt, its sore... this rifle looks like it has some kick, but not enough to say too much.

    Look at that big basket full of 45/70 ammo! Yeah baby!
    I had an 1895G but it was stolen. It was set up so sweet. I had the peep sights on it, and the Happy Trigger kit from WWG, a big loop lever for gloves, and the Blackhawk ammo pouch on the stock which had a real nice cheek pad on it. It was an excellent all purpose rifle.

Mine is chambered in .444 Marlin and I love that round, but it is more expensive and harder to find than .45-70, so I will get a Rossi in .45-70 if they ever become available for sale. They have been on stock watch for an eternity. I will also get one in the popular 30/30 or if they make it again the .35 Remington.

Nice little store with lots of inventory; prices are a little cheaper than Wild West; but, not by much.

    Really enjoy your videos! My first go-to place for a review when I'm considering the purchase of a new gun. Glad you got past your brief expulsion; I was one of I'm sure thousands of people who flamed TH-cam, but they manned up (Is that a micro-aggression?) and reinstated you.I've had an 1895 Guide Gun for over 15 years. It's one of several hunting rifles I own, including a Rem. 700 Custom in .300 H&H, a Winchester Model 70 Laredo in 7mm Magnum, a Remington Model 7 CDL in .260 Rem., and a couple of others, but the '95 Guide gun is my all-time favorite. I'm pretty selective these days, so I've only killed a couple of deer with it, but every one dropped in its tracks. Originally, I put a Williams receiver sight on it and hunted with it until about four years ago, when I had to go to a scope, a Leupold Rifleman 2-7X. I recently took the '95 out to check my zero and I continue to be amazed at the accuracy of this gun; three three-shot groups averaged 0.625" center-to-center at 100 yards! Not bad accuracy for an "old-style" lever gun...! I've had expensive bolt guns that didn't shoot that well (which is why I don't own them anymore).

    All of us in Alaska say that when you have a grizzly bear charging at you, you'll hardly feel the recoil regardless of how large of caliber you are firing. One of my brothers has a stainless steel Marlin Guide Gun .45-70 - he really likes it. It's a handy gun to have in close brush which is the terrain for most of Southeastern Alaska.
