I’ve been using that bag for a little over a year now and I love the damn thing. I liked it so much I bought a second one as soon as i could. I really dig the modifications you did to the straps on the bottom, that’s been my only complaint with the bag. From my own research, I think the pouch/sleeve that comes sewn on the side (that you removed) was actually for holding a loaf of bread. You would just slide your bread in the sleeve and then fold it over the top of the rest of the gear in the bag and close the flap, that way your bread stayed on top and didn’t get crushed. For the inner pocket, I find my canteen sits really well there and it also helps balance the bag since it’s right in the middle.
I have that pack bit havent really used it although it is a good one for sure! That great kilt looks wicked, Ive used greatcoats in a similar manner but that seems much more versatile.

Yep. I have the Yugoslavian pack also. I roll my U.S. pancho and liner up with other items and carry it in the bottom straps. I agree that the original bottom straps are a bit short for much more than a pancho and liner. I use both configurations: a backpack or haversack. The inner pouch fits a U.S. mess kit quite well. The original bottom straps have extra tails that snap together so that you can fasten it to a belt to make it more secure as a backpack. A military web belt, or even a webbed tool belt works fine with this pack in combination with a miltary canteen that fastens to the belt. I like the versatility and size of this pack because you can use it as a load carrier, and once you have set up camp, you can strip it down to use as a haversack for foraging. Or, just use it as a haversack for day hikes.
For a compact loadout, it seems to be very well thought out. Overall I like the video. Except you gotta do something about the vignetting of your camera it's so dark that I'm having trouble making out what you're showing.

Nice to have a fellow jock watching and taking an interest! 🙂 I'm entirely self taught (via TH-cam, and online research but most importantly actually trying and learning as well as being creative! it's in part because of where I grew up and and also because of my love for the ancient skills and the feeling of belonging I have to that point in time. I now teach courses as well as sharing information skills and tutorials online on Instagram, Facebook and TH-cam. good set of kit, but how much does it all weigh? It looks like a heavy loadout for a haversack. Perhaps a rucksack would be an easier way of carrying this load?
@@paulsmithprimitivebushcraft there's plenty of ways, just thought you might have an old Scottish recipe with some plants or something with you wearing the old school clothing at times and into primitive technology. No worries fella 👍

Great minimal kit, have or could you do winter with the wool blankets and how you go about it, it’s something I’m seriously looking into, you must have the equivalent to 2 army wool blankets there which I’ve just bought, would like to hear your take on it thx ?
For me wool blankets are fantastic but I also rely on a few other things to keep me warm those are fire, and hot rocks! You an have hot rocks among your wool blanket without fear of it melting unlike synthetic stuff and also you can sleep nearer the fire too, as for the size mine doubles as my great kilt it's a huge bit of wool so I can have 4 layers on top and on the bottom with wool to spare not to mention it keeping. Up to 80% of its insulating properties when totally wet if you use it properly and pair it with other skills it's more than enough to see you through the average winter I'd say comfortably down to -15c with the use of hot rocks and a close fire 🙂🔥
Also in winter you would struggle to have alnight fire with a lightweight tarp shelter wouldn’t you if so how would you set it up, just wondering cus if out for 2 weeks you would have to stay put and build a primitive shelter or be more mobile with a tarp?
First Bushcraft knife I owned was an A Wright and sons with stag scales I thought it was great till I received an A S Harding woodlore clone with camel bone scales and black liners the A Wright hasn’t seen the light of day since nice video

I carry a similar pack quite often 👍 and you've got the bases covered . Have you got any ideas for naturally dying a wool blanket ?
It's a great style of pack very versatile, unfortunately I don't know of anyway to dye a wool blanket perhaps do a search on TH-cam 🙂
