  • Hello, in this little video I head off to a nice spot to experiment with a haversack and bedroll with a view to camping ( at some point) with it.
    I may need to take the odd bit of kit out or add bits in but before I overnight with this type of set-up I will set out on walks and day camps with it to test it out.
    Thanks for Watching 👍

    Wow, your video sure resonated with me , Im in Germany and I recorded myself with all my stuff setting up my tarp food, stove etc... only to find funny dog walkers and insecure about making a fire. I sure dislike that feeling, here you better follow the rules or you get a big fine and they call police on you for just about anything, so I left and did not upload my video, planning to try again this winter.👍🏻

      😂😂 . Those things can be a problem here too. All the land is owned by someone or other . How do you own all the land 🤔. Anyway good luck with your future endeavours , I'm sure you'll manage to do what you want in the end and thank you for watching 👍🏕

    Very glad to see this “junk on the bunk” with the Helikon Tex haversack. I have the same bag & wish I hadn’t purchased it. Because it’s TOO big. Damn thing is like an artists portfolio hip-bumping along down the trail. However it would be excellent for what haversacks were originally designed for. To venture from camp (& one’s main pack) to re provision. The sack is spacious enough to carry groceries. Eggs. Produce. A load of bread. Or all of the aforementioned and a tarp just in case main camp isn’t made back before night/weather. Anyhow the thing about all bags is they depreciate down to nothing the minute they’re purchased. Heck I bought 2 Gregory Jade 60 packs at Goodwill recently for $9 each. One gray the other lime. Currently using the lime one for my suburban trekking/rucking exercises.

      😂 it is large for a haversack . They actually call it a satchel , which i suppose it is. I'm getting on OK with it but I do tend to overfill it and have it banging on my hip 😅. Wanted a large style haversack bag though and it still comes in handy . . Especially for a simple little day camp or an extra bit of conveyance for bits and bobs like kindling and fatwood . Anyway thank you for watching. Take care 🏕 👍

    Hey Mate, I just got a cotton canvas haversack (ex Romanian military) off eBay ! Been thinking along similar lines to yourself. Not sure I can pull it off - but isn’t there something nice and different about a small bag with all your gear just slung over your shoulder 👍 And in busy, non-camping areas, I think it draws less attention too. Thanks for sharing that Mark 😊👍

    • @treksntarps
      @treksntarps  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Cheers Giles. Mate I reckon you'd be more likely than me to pull it off 😂. There's me with my massive Carinthia sleeping bag and half a tonne of gear 😂 and you kipping in winter without even a blanket 😂.
      Definately want to give it a go though ( in the warmer weather 😂) .
      Do like the idea of it , feels really authentic and traditional .
      Its more inconspicuous with a haversack but the bedroll might give the game away a little, but if and when I do it I'll be wandering around the woodland trails.
      Look forward to hopefully seeing your haversack in action . Take care Giles and thank you so much for watching 🏕👌

    Hello, a nice set. I'm a fan of wool blankets - they provide reliable warmth. I've currently switched to the "Swagman Roll" from Helikon-Tex. A poncho inlet that you can also convert into a sleeping bag.

    • @treksntarps
      @treksntarps  9 หลายเดือนก่อน

      Yes I have that to. Was thinking of pairing it with a wool blanket in mildly chilly weather. A blanket will protect it from the fire too ( if you've got one nearby ) Thank you for watching , take it easy 👌🏕

    It's nice to see one of these vids in the UK. The gears virtually identical to my own! Helikon satchel, wool blanket, poncho, tealight uco candle lantern etc.,
    With these camps it's helpful to go through what you'll be wearing also, as that forms part of your camp set-up, more-so than modern camping.
    The tealight candle lantern is a good emergency back-up in freezing temperatures, using under your poncho when sat against something.
    One of those small uco firebowls would get you through the night in colder weather, though you'd be waking and feeding it every hour. Giles Binyon does this and just uses clothing.
    I've been looking at those ground mats. How do they compare to a roll mat. I use the Savotta roll mat.
    Actually really enjoyed this.

    • @treksntarps
      @treksntarps  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Thank you . Yes I've watched some of Giles Binyons videos. I need at least a wool blanket and yes the fire bowl does need tending if you need it for warmth all night.
      I do like the traditional gear but have to put a few things to the test with some back ups ( just in case😂).
      Thank you so much for watching and commenting.
      Take it easy 👌 🏕

      In regards to the mats it depends on the thickness of the wool and temperature. On a mild night they work fine. If its colder I think you'd need to make a browse bed and lay the mat on top. I have a sheepskin that I've used with it and that worked well on a nippy night . 👍

    Yes mate. I got inspired for swag set up Scötty goes walkabout. Wynnchester bedroll. Not cheap, but no need for tent or rucksack, so lots of weight and cost savings. I also recommend the 3/4 weight on back and 1/4 on front in dilly bag for food and liquids. It takes the weight of lumber spine and makes it easier to walk upright. It's a whole new level, also a lean to tarp if it does get wet. Cheers mate.

    Just found something different as bedroll. Bought a 80-82 inch "Waterproof Dog Blanket" on Amazon, folded it lengthwise in thirds so I have two layers on top, one on bottom, then added 5 stitches at foot end to keep it together. Stuck a torso size pad inside it for ground insulation and inflatable pillow. This makes a minimalist bedroll that I can lay on wet ground, could even get rained on but I would use a tarp or poncho for rain cover.
