Dragon Quest Is STUCK in Mobile/3DS Purgatory

  • I often think of Dragon Quest as the least available major video game franchise. I can't think of any other major property in gaming whose mainline titles are so unavailable. How did DQ get here? Let's discuss and ponder Square Enix's next move for ports and remakes.

This video was amazing hands down. As a MASSIVE dragon quest fan I appreciate you talking about the accessibility of the mainline games. And it has inspired me to make a video on this as well. I'm a dragon quest-centered channel so I cannot thank you enough for this gem of content.

I'm so glad someone is talking about this lol. It's so jarring that DQ1-3, and DQ11 are literally the only games on modern consoles; and 1-3 aren't even on all of them! We've been begging for IV-VI at the very least for the longest time and it's just kind of weird that the series went radio silent after the 35th anniversary and a couple of sparse announcements for the 36th.

I'm not a developer, and I really have no clue what's entailed in porting games across platforms. That said, porting the mobile versions of IV-VI _seems_ very doable. My guess is that the holdup is strictly based on release schedule strategies. Waiting on legacy content is just annoying. This is content we should have across generations and platforms by default.

Closest I can think of major series being unavailable on modern platforms is Pokémon. It’s a shame since with a 3DS, you are able to play Generations 1 through 7 all on there via DS backwards compatibility, Virtual Console, and original 3DS software. That and Pokémon Bank is available to transfer the monsters over from classic games to that service, and now Pokémon Home on Switch. Now with the eShop shutdown, other than piracy, that’s it for those classic Pokémon games.
Great discussion video, I have been binge watching your content after I discovered your Fantasian 100 hour review. Keep up the informative video discussions and take care!

Pokemon is a very close equivalent for sure. One key difference for me is that mainline Pokemon games-new entries and remakes alike-are coming out regularly. That helps lessen the blow of the older games being unavailable. I also think there's something of an unofficial roadmap for older titles, since Switch Online is rumored to get GB and GBA. I'm hopeful that will provide some good coverage.
Glad you're enjoying the content! Criticisms aside, Fantasian definitely lacks the coverage it deserves.

Great video as always 👍 I was looking into this myself not long ago and it was quite discouraging to find how little is actually available. I've heard that DQ XI is a good starting point for a newcomer, so I might do that (although I also picked up the original trilogy for Game Boy Color a while back in anticipation of the Analogue Pocket).
Where these mobile versions are concerned, I find that the iPad can sometimes be an escape hatch to play them in a halfway decent way, but Square Enix are all over the place with them. Chrono Trigger is the gold standard as it plays on iPad and Apple TV with controller support and saves synced in the cloud so you can move back and forth between devices. Then you have the FF Pixel Remasters that don't support Apple TV and don't support controllers (for some reason). And finally the Dragon Quest mobile versions that not only don't support Apple TV and don't support controllers, but they also don't support landscape mode, not even on iPad. Can you imagine holding a giant tablet in portrait mode trying to play DQ VIII with touch controls?! 🤦‍♂️
Seemingly too busy chasing after NFT hype, Square Enix is leaving money on the table by ignoring the low-hanging fruit that is simply bringing these classic games to modern consoles, especially the Switch.

Thanks for the feedback! Yeah, Square's mobile versions have been a very mixed bag, as you mentioned. I've bought a few out of curiosity, but I have no desire to play these games on mobile. I played a couple of the Pixel Remasters on PC, and it was a very good experience (despite my frustration for not having these on console). And I'll agree that DQ mobile ports are bottom of the barrel. If they had a landscape option and supported controllers, that could be different. The weird thing is that Square, unlike many other companies, has an overall good track record when it comes to ports, remasters, and remakes. Mana, SaGa, FF, and even Chrono have ports galore.

Definitely frustrating, the whole situation. Not official, but the ps2 port of DQV with fan translation and orchestral OST is the real big fancy rig version which I highly recommend. I'm a super fan so I will go out of my way but c'mon squenix take my money!

I appreciate the tip. I've been looking more and more into the PS2 version, even though I prefer the presentation of the DS/mobile versions (at least on the surface level). How would you compare the translations of the two?

@@PestulonGaming Truthfully, I prefer the fan translation as the DQ localization teams tend to overdo it with the accents etc (still a fan of those, but do prefer it straight overall). As for the presentation, I do usually prefer pixel art to polygons but something about the art-directed camera work and lighting is so unique to this game. It's truly stunning on a ps2 emulator with the internal resolution jacked up. All that said, any of the three versions of that game are amazing in their own way.
