  • As Square Enix preserves countless retro JRPGs, and as Dragon Quest enjoys its own theme park, restaurants, animes, and big-budget CGI film, mainline Dragon Quest titles continue to be minimally available on modern platforms. It's time for Square Enix to make their most historic property's main series available. Let's Francis-rage together.

Fascinating Pestulon lore at the beginning - I kind of assumed he'd always been a JRPG guy

Lol, right? It's actually a bit complicated. As a teen in the mid '90s, I LOVED 16-bit JRPGs, but I rarely had the patience to finish them. I had Chrono Trigger, FFVI, Lunar, Secret of Mana, Secret of Evermore, and I loved them all. I think Chrono Trigger was the one that was so good that I refused to put it down and got all the way to the credits. DQXI was kind of a homecoming for me. I played it in summer of 2020, and it inspired me to play and beat around 30 more JRPGs, and I've had a blast. So I guess you could say I'm a JRPG Guy: Ultimate Late Bloomer Edition.

@@PestulonGaming Nice! I was way more closed off than you. The only JRPG I was ever exposed to as a child was a SaGa 2 (Final Fantasy Legend II) on the Game Boy, received from aunt and uncle for Christmas, and I couldn't make heads or tails of it 😅 But nowadays I consider myself JRPG-curious, perhaps even JRPG-aspirational. I have DQ 1,2 and 3 for the Game Boy Color, and 11 for the Switch. Once I've gotten around to playing those I will start complaining about the availability of the others 🙃
PS - when I looked into it I too was put off by the mobile games being portrait-only. The SQEX mobile ports are all over the place. Pretty sure Chrono Trigger is landscape, with controller support, and also works on the Apple TV with cross-progression cloud saves.
PPS - I think there actually was a mobile port of DQ 7, but it was Japan only

Been a fan of dragon quest since dragon quest monsters on Gameboy color and I can't tell you how frustrating it's been being a fan of this series for so long seeing it get no attention or love here in the US. Glad you got into the series when you did, wish more people knew it existed. Dragon Quest Monsters the Dark Prince comes out December 1st I'd check it out if you want more DQ

Thanks for the tip! I did play the demo of DQM3, and while I was quite underwhelmed, I still plan on playing the full game. I'm actually currently playing DQIV, since DQM3 is based on it. It looks so rough on the Switch, but maybe I'll just force myself to play it handheld. (I also kinda want to wait to see if it releases on Steam like Treasures did, but I suppose I'll go ahead and play the Switch version.)
I was also planning on playing Infinity Strash, but I decided to skip after it reviewed so poorly. 2023 just has too many enticing new releases for me to want to make time for something so mid. I might pick it up on sale tho.
