I remember when these hit the Houston street racing scene circa 1991. Nothing, and I mean NOTHING, could hang with one of these out of the hole when the light turned green. That was my first vehicle in 2001, I drove it for 7 months, and then my dad pulled in with a 2003 Ford Lightning for my graduation present. The GMC is still in my garage to this day, I take it out on occasion during the summer months for drives. But it mostly stays in garage parked next to that same Ford Lightning.
Jay is starting to get up there in age. I'm 42 and hes 68 as of today (March 2019). As a car guy, Jay has been a part of my life... With raising 4 kids, work and living in the middle of the country, I've never and most likely like millions of others will never get to meet him, shake his hand or walk thru his dream garage. Being wealthy, having experiences and driving cars most of us can only dream of driving, he seems to me to be no different than you (whomever is reading this) and myself... Just a simple car dude living the life. Thanks for everything Jay...
4.6s 0-60 time in 1991 would have been crazy. Imagine doing some tuning and dropping a 5 speed in. You might be able to get 0-60 in the high 3s. Amazing little truck. I've never heard of them until this vid.
Yes, these trucks are amazing but people have tuned them and they will do 0-60 in almost 2 seconds. The 4.3 v6 is easy to get hp out of and it makes this truck very fast.
I've never seen an automatic shift like it does in these cars. My friend has a Typhoon. The transmission does an amazing job of keeping the car in the power band, but it shifts so hard and fast, that it had some bigtime wear issues. I'm surprised Jay hadn't had any yet. My friends Typhoon destroyed his first transmission at the 30k mark, and he wasn't a very aggressive driver.
@@spreaddeezhazelnutz7511 really !?? How so brotha.. any recommendation mods to my 96 Chevy Cheyenne 1500? Love my baby but I feel like she has no balls lol
MexiKingiCon Well, a good start would be if you have 4wd so you could launch so much better. I’m personally going through all of my driveline components and upgrading all of them. As for the engine, my truck originally had the 5.3 because my truck is a 2000 model and I’m going to upgrade it with a moderate compression 5.3 block (325) stroked out to a 383 (about 6.2-6.3 liter) stroker so that way it can handle boost. I was originally going to go with a supercharger but then I found out that On 3 Performance made a twin turbo kit for my truck so my goals are around 900-1000 whp. Honestly, the best thing you can do is to just look around online which is the best way for research and eventually you will start piecing all of the performance parts together on a list for your build. That’s how I did it and now I have a whole list of parts that I need to get me to my end goal with my truck build. It’s nice making an entire list because it gets rid of the guess work and it’s nicely organized so that way you don’t forget about certain parts.
There becomes a point in your net worth...maybe after the first 50mil....where you dress however you want? At his net worth...I think I would just wear random things everyday...Samari suit Saturdays...surfer Sundays...etc.
You would think after seeing what AWD gets them in terms of performance That GM would say "Hey! Let's make a performance car with AWD!" You would think. But no...
Really the Ford 5.0 wasn't that fast, reliable yes but not that fast. Dyno charts showed 160HP to the wheels while GM's LT1 dyno was around 275-285HP to the wheels so yes they were correct on the 300HP mark. Mind you the LT1 had all that torque at 1400RPMS and revved pretty high for a V8. I own a LS1 now but I honestly miss my 97LT1 with all that low end grunt.
I was 19 and my uncle had one. He gave me the keys one day. The 2 things that really impressed me was the AWD starts and the braking. With the all the weight up front on the discs it really stopped. With that new fangled anti lock tech I felt free to push them as hard as I wanted but never to stutter. But what did a 19 year old middle class kid in 1992 have to compare it too. That was big day for me.Fond memories of the Syclone. I finally got to drive one of my uncles cars that I'd lusted over since I was 8. Wish I would haves been old enough to drive the Triumphs, Jags or Sunbeams.
my dream car when in high school. it was this and a Porsche RS America. thanks Jay for letting reading that article in the library over, over and over again.
I have always loved these. And I would still love to have one even now. I can remember when I built this plastic model when I was just a kid. Now that I'm almost 40, I still love these. Probably my favorite truck of all time.
I love the no big deal attitude he had about the lady who bumped him. I love it even more that he left it that way even though he has the money to fix it.
not true id say they are 50/50 just like the 454 ss....you can find wrecked ones and you can find garaged since new mint ones....the ones in between are hard to find for reasonable money
I’m really starting to appreciate the compact size and simplicity of vehicles of that era. Everything today is too big and too sophisticated that they have zero personality.
I'd LOVE to race this truck on a winding road. One owner modded his by taking advantage of the truck bed. Most of the large components were put in the rear to distribute the weight better. He added a huge rear wing and blew the engine to a whopping 490 hp. It was so fast that he was forced to install a front dam to help the wheels stay on the pavement!
Man I miss my dad's syclone. He had the 60th one built. Last four of the vin was 0060. I used to love smokin vettes street light to street light lol. So much fun to drive.
My father in law bought a brand new, fully loaded, extended cab, 4x4 S10 in 1991... It was less than 14 grand. 26,000 for a syclone??? That's probably the reason they only lasted a year!
It’s interesting that the typhoon costed $2900 and they sold more of them but the typhoon had more seating capacity and 900 pounds of carrying capacity

Gotta love Jay Leno, Here's a guy who wakes up in the morning and doesn't even comb his hair before the video. Same damn clothes every day too, but we love him and his cars!
Love this channel. I remember these new, saw a few over the years, and never knew it wasn't a version of the Grand National engine. The knowledge from Mr. Leno is deep yet he doesn't bore us to death with details.
This episode is not long enough. His newest episodes go into great detail about the cars. I wish he would redo this one to go into greater detail in this truck
I never really liked it in forza but maybe I'd like it a bit more Irl. Every other AWD could get more hp, be lighter, or handled much better so it always feels underwhelming. It's great for a truck though and people get real salty when you beat them with it lol.
He said he drove it daily for a while after he bought it back in 91 so if say maybe between 50,000 and 75,000 miles. I don't know how much he had to drive but that's the best guess I can come up with.
Shea Samuels He has over 200 cars and he seems to say "I drive this daily" about almost every one. I think your definition of daily driver and his definition of daily driver are far apart. I'd be shocked if he put even 1,000 miles on any one of those cars in a year. Even in 1991 he had dozens of cars, so his idea of a daily driver was one week out of the year he drove it five days straight, and then put it away for 51 weeks.
I spun a rod bearing in one, twice, the dealer tried to ignore the knock rather than fix it under warranty, but they finally gave in due to my complaints so they turned the crank, replaced the rod and bearings, about a month later the knock was back
In 1991 This truck had a retail price of $25,790. Almost 30 years later and you can get a nice one for around $30,000. You got an awesome truck that increased in value! Can't beat that.
I wish the big 3 would do cool trucks again. I get bored of seeing thousands of fucking sports/muscle cars every day. I want the time of unique trucks back again. The broad period of time all the way from the 454SS 1500, Syclone, all the way to the SRT-10 Ram and Colorado/Trailblazer SS.
Tyler Coates I think they don´t see the point in making one, since you can get any power upgrades from aftermarket tuners. Also, i think they would only sell small numbers, but they would have to do all the tests for a new model and you probably know how much money developing a car costs.
I raced one when I had my mustang. The guy asked me if I would rather go on a roll i said yes i would rather. We went on a 30 roll and were door to door! That was a great race! Those are always the best!
I always liked those trucks. I was in high school when they were new so they were the truck I'd daydream about. I'd say the Syclone was right up there with the Pontiac Fiero as being the (non exotic) cars or trucks that early 90s teenage boys lusted after the most. I did finally get an S10 ZR2 years later (coincidentally with a 4.3L V6 but not supercharged) which I still own, but it will never be in the same league since it wasn't built for the same purpose. Very cool little trucks.
This is the best sports truck ever made. It has everything - sophisticated all-wheel-drive, turbocharged engine, suspension that's actually halfway scienced-out, compact bodywork that's just right for sporting situations and light weight, able to ...well, the 348 isn't all that impressive a target, but still, it's perhaps the most complete sports truck package ever put together. ...which is why the K1500 454SS is the worst one ever made. Because they put almost zero effort into that (durr, let's put the 1-ton motor into the half ton, paint it black, and do NOTHING ELSE,) and sold it at the exact same time as the Syclone. It's almost...why even bother?
I had a '92 GMC Typhoon and it was a blast to drive. I would take off from a green light and when the turbo spooled up, I'd floor it and it would drop back down into first. The AWD would grip and off it would go. 0 to 45 mph in no time at all. (Never gotten a speeding ticket :-)
Nice, it is a awesome truck to drive, the interior is dated, “plastic” for sure! Check out the sy/Ty’s. The Saudi trucks were cool too! Marlboro had their red trucks running around too ;-)
the lunch lady up the street used to have one of these. I guess she bought it new. she had a notch back fox body mustang 5.0 too. never knew what happened to either one. I think she has ford focus now.
When I was a young man, this was my dream truck. But, as a single dad with two boys I couldn't afford it. Nice to see one on here though! Keep it clean Jay!
This and the typhoon will always be my favorite vehicles. Had the privilege of driving a typhoon a few times. Friend had one when we where 18. We had fun in it.

Amazing truck. I go back a few years, and wrenched for a while, but I never heard of it. I'm always happy to see great vehicles fall into your care--and you're unique in the way you share them.
I used to borrow this thing from a friend of mine, while living in Vienna, Austria. Was a lot of fun on the autobahn.
God damnn flexin
Must be nice
Daddies money
Those are the 2 best trucks on the planet, your dad is a generous man
@@GrizzlyGoesRawr Jealous ????
Jay is starting to get up there in age. I'm 42 and hes 68 as of today (March 2019). As a car guy, Jay has been a part of my life... From watching the tonight show as a teenager to watching everything car related show he does here on youtube. When Jays time comes, it's going to be weird, it's going to be the end of an era.
It would actually be slower with a manual because then you can't boost launch. And boost launching is so much fun with these
I've never seen an automatic shift like it does in these cars.
I wanna see Jay's closet since he always wears the same Canadian tuxedo everyday lol.
My closet consists of black Heavy Metal band t-shirts and blue jeans. It's look that way for over 40 years.
There becomes a point in your net worth...maybe after the first 50mil....where you dress however you want?
At his net worth...I think I would just wear random things everyday...Samari suit Saturdays...surfer Sundays...etc.
His closet looks the same a a cartoon characters closet.
Check out his latest outfit for the 2020 mid-engine vette
My grandpa literally wears the same thing as Jay everyday 😂
You would think after seeing what AWD gets them in terms of performance That GM would say "Hey! Let's make a performance car with AWD!"
You would think. But no...
my first truck was an 84 s-10 with the 4.3 it went like a bat out of hell.. cheers.
marcelstjean i figured your first woulda been a ferd!
Yep I had one to. Without the turbp they was fast.
The only V6 at that time was the 2.8 in the S10/S15 (GMC).
I had a 1988 GMC S-15. 2.5 liter 5 Speed. My first brand new vehicle. I drooled over the thought of owning one of these.
Bags of feathers? They're called pillows Jay..
"...this was before your time". :D
I love that of all the amazing cars he has his daily driver was a humble GMC "cyclone" pickup.
Its beautiful Jay, Im glad you kept it in great condition all these years. One of my favorite Garage videos for sure.
Wish I would haves been old enough to drive the Triumphs, Jags or Sunbeams.
my dream car when in high school. it was this and a Porsche RS America. thanks Jay for letting reading that article in the library over, over and over again.
always feel like I'm right there with Jay. Had wanted a syclone !
I wanna hear Jay's story about bringing home a Christmas Tree with this truck!
I love my 83 GMC s15. Ive had it sense I was 17. I'm 37 now
I have always loved these. And I would still love to have one even now. I can remember when I built this plastic model when I was just a kid. Now that I'm almost 40, I still love these. Probably my favorite truck of all time.
Same for me. It was my dream vehicle and if I could find one in good condition, I'd buy and fix it up.
My dream vehicle. I'll never have one , but watching Jay drive it is as close as I'll ever get..
I love the no big deal attitude he had about the lady who bumped him. I love it even more that he left it that way even though he has the money to fix it.
Literally impossible to find unmolested now.
not true id say they are 50/50 just like the 454 ss....you can find wrecked ones and you can find garaged since new mint ones....the ones in between are hard to find for reasonable money
I work with a guy that owns one since new still has the original tires on it.
Jeremy Hurlbut you’re telling me he’s driving around with 27 year old tires?
Clipper1094 😂😂😂
Clipper1094 the tires on my truck have date codes from the 90s lol. Broke high schooler
2020 Silverado 2500HD is big but has personality
To see this in 2021 is such a treat! Being a child of the 70s I grew up seeing these, but had no idea what it would do. I'd love to drive one.
Man I miss my dad's syclone. He had the 60th one built. Last four of the vin was 0060. I used to love smokin vettes street light to street light lol. So much fun to drive.
"Hey Jay, wake up it's time to film" "my hair look ok?!" "Yeah, sure, let's go"
My father in law bought a brand new, fully loaded, extended cab, 4x4 S10 in 1991... It was less than 14 grand.
26,000 for a syclone??? That's probably the reason they only lasted a year!
It’s interesting that the typhoon costed $2900 and they sold more of them but the typhoon had more seating capacity and 900 pounds of carrying capacity
American Unicorn Cars that yet to be in the garage:
Pontiac 91-92 SLP Firehawk
Pontiac Trans-am Turbo 89
Buick GNX
87 Buick Turbo T Regal limited (Landau Top, concert lights, bench seat).
86 Dodge OMNI Shelby GLHS
I have a 91' passed down from my father. He kept it garage kept, maintained and clean---I have done the same. It sits next to a tesla and a duramax, but I LOVE taking it out on the weekends. She is still quick and has a race fit.
Jay the Car God has Shined upon you my Brother. .. almost bought that truck but dad said what the hell are you going great to do with it in winter .... 71 Olds was the car for that. 105 cars later the addiction has not gone away.
@ 7:55 " I had the President of GM here in the garage, he saw some markings, How did You get that? ...don't worry about it, it was before your time" LMAO
I can see the slogan now... "Until Ferrari decides to build a truck, this is it."
Correct me if i'm wrong but, didn't Syclones and Typhoons use a Mitsubishi turbocharger?
yes mitsubishi turbo and garrett intercooler
Gotta love Jay Leno, Here's a guy who wakes up in the morning and doesn't even comb his hair before the video. Same damn clothes every day too, but we love him and his cars!
Love this channel. I remember these new, saw a few over the years, and never knew it wasn't a version of the Grand National engine. The knowledge from Mr. Leno is deep yet he doesn't bore us to death with details.
I like Jay the car guy way more than Jay the late night host. I love this show.
Chevy needs a remake of this truck with modern tires and magnetic suspension
John Lukach well you saw how they ruined the blazer
i laughed when he said ohh look its a ferrari
This has always been my dream car (truck). Had a friend who had one and was in love with that thing! One day I will finally get mine.
Are you close?
This episode is not long enough. His newest episodes go into great detail about the cars. I wish he would redo this one to go into greater detail in this truck
I've been wanting one since when it was on Forza 4
I never really liked it in forza but maybe I'd like it a bit more Irl. Every other AWD could get more hp, be lighter, or handled much better so it always feels underwhelming. It's great for a truck though and people get real salty when you beat them with it lol.
Adonis Amarante Was about as quick a the Lancia Integrale Evo 2 around track In PGR2..my first time learning of it's existance
Adonis Amarante DLC car lol
I’ve been wanting one since 1991
@@klj2382 Me too. I had to settle for the S-10 4 cylinder and 5 speed. Not quite the same
Wonder how many miles he has on it? Looks absolutely immaculate. Especially the plastic trim which is prone to fading.
The Moto Channel He said he ''used'' to drive it daily. Assuming when he first got it.
I had a 91 s10 with the 4.3 liter. Best truck l ever had.
Ray B. I had a 97 Sonoma 4.3 liter out ran a cop in Pennsylvania
I have a 95 s10 with a 4.3 and love the truck to death!
Yes Jay. You have an addiction to 'fastest vehicles' without regard to manufacturers. You, my friend, are an Equal Opportunity Buyer. True American.
That thing still looks good today. Very nice truck.
The ultimate frame swap for a mid 50s Chevy PU.
Tyler Coates Oh and I almost forgot the ford lightnings, can't forget those.
Agree
Tyler Coates I think they don´t see the point in making one, since you can get any power upgrades from aftermarket tuners. Also, i think they would only sell small numbers, but they would have to do all the tests for a new model and you probably know how much money developing a car costs.
Tyler Coates Also the Toyota Tacoma X-Runner.
Remember the SSR? That thing handle and looked like gentile warts! Can't belive that was GM's answer to the SRT10 RAM and Lightning lol
Jay says the most fun is between 20 and 120, that's why freeway on ramps are my favorite!!!
I raced one when I had my mustang. The guy asked me if I would rather go on a roll i said yes i would rather. We went on a 30 roll and were door to door! That was a great race! Those are always the best!
When GM was building awesome stock speed sleepers. Grand National, Typhoon, Cyclone, Impala SS.
eldo59 the impala ss wasn’t fast. It made some power but damn was it heavy as hell.
@@snipeatyou It had a 3.73 Gear in it factory stock though. So yeah it was fast for its time.
Very cool little trucks.
ls swap it
Turbo it, and swap the drivetrain for one from a Chevy Astro van (the Syclones and Typhoons has the same AWD system as the Astro)
From my understanding, the old throttle body injection was too limiting on it, could not feed it enough, 2 barrels where 4 used to rein supreme
I was born in 91’
This is now my new fave truck!
Nice, it is a awesome truck to drive, the interior is dated, “plastic” for sure! Check out the sy/Ty’s. The Saudi trucks were cool too! Marlboro had their red trucks running around too ;-)
Rare pickup truck to own it. I really want that truck. :)
the lunch lady up the street used to have one of these. I guess she bought it new. she had a notch back fox body mustang 5.0 too. never knew what happened to either one. I think she has ford focus now.
chieftp good story.

if by "story," you think I'm making it up - I'm not. I never could figure out why an older woman would buy a vehicle like that.
chieftp no, I don't think you're making it up; I'm making fun of you. It was a stupid story. But thanks for sharing.
Rock7132 good comment
i would if she had a notch and then a sy
$26,000 in 1991 is $45,000 in 2015
When I was a young man, this was my dream truck. But, as a single dad with two boys I couldn't afford it. Nice to see one on here though! Keep it clean Jay!
I miss 1991. Now all truck commercials are about tailgates and wifi.
I wish American pickups came to Australia.
Damien Beckett Funny you say that. Here's at least one American who wishes we had Utes.
Have you noticed Jay can't stay in his lane when he drives?
