GMC ain't no Joke👍🏾😁🤳You can feel the difference in weight between a Dakota & S10 when You look at the door Window frames. The S10 is constructed to be very light. It's a great platform for a Performance Truck. AWD & Turbo V6 is a WinWin. Dakota is actually a Mid Size Truck. It was the only Mid Size Truck available with a V8 for many Years. My 98 Dakota Club Cab 5.2 Magnum V8 is still one of my favorite vehicles to drive even with 196,000 miles on it🔈GUNK TRANSMEDIC Shift Improver keeps the Automatic Transmission shifting like New✌😎☯️
I worked on restoring the paint on a Shelby truck. Red like that one. It was a barn find with 20k miles and was purchased by a truck museum after it was finished. I'm not sure which one, but I was happy to have the opportunity to work on it.
I owned a Shelby Dakota for several years, that was a fun truck. Terrifying in the rain, or if you needed to come to a short stop, but a absolute blast to drive.
Ya the dodge trannies in those days were horrible, even the Dakota 5.9 rt trans robbed so much performance from that truck, a manual valve body with a b&m slap shifter really woke those things up. Like half a second off the quarter mile times if I remember correctly.
Those GMC Syclones are nice!!! My neighbor bought one new in 1991. And for me, I love my 2002 Ford SVT Lightning ⚡️⚡️It’s in mint condition with 32k miles.
Hello andrewdunbar828, You're 100% correct about the headliner-sag issue. This is thanks to The EPA requiring auto manufacturers to use environmentally friendly, water-based glue to adhere the cloth material to the cabin roof of cars, trucks & vans. This was an industry-wide issue in high-humidity regions; such as Florida; where this Dodge Shelby Dakota resides. It took several years until a glue was developed that resolved this issue & met the "ridiculous" EPA requirements. Best regards from Yucatan Mexico, Ben
Wow I’ve heard of the tycoon & typhoons but never have seen or heard about these Shelby Dodge Dakotas. That’s awesome 👏🏻 & literally like new still wow.
Professor, you've done it again! Classics Trucks with UHMPH! I remember seeing the Syclones in Dubai, as Police Trucks. But the cops hated them because who wants a Black Truck in the dessert?
Owner of number 0828 Break boosting is necessary to break all the tires loose. Stock they can handle a little more boost from stock to get it past 300whp. The transmission is also what helps get the power down, changing out the stock torque converter for more higher rpm stall speed will help take advantage of the power. Power to weight is the strong point, next to doing awd donuts in the rain or snow. This vehicle was ahead of its time by mixing forced induction and awd into a pickup.
Friend and I went to the Chevy dealer to look at Syclones I remember sitting in the driver's seat of a brand new one in 1991. Sales guy tried to sell us we were broke in our early 20's living with roommates. The syclone was way ahead of its time now performance and AWD is so common.
I had the pleasure owning a Syclone in 95. Did the typical mods, TD06-20g turbo, upgraded intercooler, Lawrence Connelly chip and knock retard box. Scared the living tail out of my gIrlfriend and father, such a fun truck. Things you look back on, sold it for aMitsubishi 3000gt- VR4. 😂
And you can't fix the saggy headliner! You might be able to fix it easier if you don't wait much longer! Just giving a hard time great looking Shelby truck and a very awesome collection!
I like the quote about the Dakota: "it was not atall fast" However, if i had to choose between the two i would go Dakota simply based on rarest. Until this video i only knew about the Syclone... my dad had an s10 that was black and that truck is special in my memories but that dodge has got to be one of the rarest trucks ever produced.
@@samueljackson2478 if it was the small short bed with AWD. And yes I can say my old dodge would woops a fox body. I whooped many things with that truck. And it was ext cab and 4x4. It was no slouch.
As a kid I remember hanging out at American Sunroof on weekends while my Dad worked on the owners Auburn Boat tail speedster (my Dad worked at the GM tech center across the street in Warren Michigan)…I saw a dozen or so Typhoon/ Cyclones lined up in the process of being modified for dealerships…it was like seeing a UFO or something, I remember wanting the typhoon tho ever since😏
haha I doubt that unless you did extensive work to the engine! My Dakota V6 would run 120-125 mph & would smoke a V6 S10 & couldnt touch my V8 Dakota even though the Chevy 4.3 is basically a 350 with 2 less cylinders! Im not taking away from the S10 as I loved them & had an '83, '86 & '88 but they were not as fast as my Dakotas
I have driven both of these trucks many times and done work on them. I can almost guarantee those s10's you raced with your Dakota were 2.8l v6 versions not the 4.3. The 2.8 were absolutely useless. But with just a little bit of work a 4.3 would walk ANY Dakota all day. Again I've been inside those trucks too many times, not taking anything against the Dakota though, they just weren't fast.
You do have to give credit to GM for producing this vehicle. I just wish they did the same today vs copying and just keeping up with other pickups 2022-23
I'm Probably the one that put the 1st Set of Tires and did the 4 Wheel Alignment on that Syclone at the Firestone Mastercare in Madison Heights MI. PAS Inc was Right Behind our shop so they used Us for Repairs, Tires and Alignments, took 4 Guys to Align that thing back then, and They Were FAST, Everyone we did had "Tweeked Boost" and would Hit 100MPH in a City Block!. @MyClassicCarTV
I bought one in 90 from a dealer in McKinney TX. They had 12 Syclones that they could not sell because of the price. I got mine for just over $21k. Wish i had it still. The only thing that was bad was the paint job. For some reason, the truck was built without clear coat. Every time i cleaned it, 2 days later the paint was more gray than black. The dealer wouldn't fix it other than wax it once a month for the 1st year. I got tired of dealing with the dealer and sold it to a retired AA pilot who was forced into retirement because he was over 65. I saw the former pilot a couple months after i sold it to him and he informed me that he went to a dealer in Dallas and they told him that GM had an open recall on the truck. They resprayed the clear coat for free. My original dealer was not willing to do the respray because i got it at a discount.
I remember Bob Fish dealership out in West Bend, Wisconsin had one in their showroom. I feel in love and dreamt about owning it. Of course, I was just a young guy and couldn’t afford it. I know if I had it, would be taken care of and probably kept it as my baby.
What's truly sad is that less than 10 years after these Shelby models were produced Chrysler produced the Dodge Dakota R/T with the 360 Magnum, and I can attest that it was quick...but nothing crazy, it was just fun. I blew one sideways in the rain at 60 MPH with a heavy foot. I also drove one of the original OBS Ford Lightnings in black with red trim and a gray cloth interior with the 351 fuel injected V8 and it was alot of fun too, but still not fast.
The first time I saw a sports pick-up I laughed. The last time I saw one I did the same. Though to be honest some of these newer ones do look good. Can't lie.
I wish I would've waited one more year, before buying my first new truck. I had a 78 Chevrolet Silverado, 1/2 ton long box 2wd. And sold it for a new 1990 Silverado, top of the line back then. Regular cab, long box 2wd, 350. It was $13,744 out the door with my dad's gm discount. I got 285,000 miles out of it before it was involved in a accident by someone looking at their cellphone, relatively new in those days.! 2001.? Always had a need for a full size truck, but was still living at home, if I would have waited, who knows? I may have bought one.!
I inherited my grandfathers 93 Chevy regular cab long bed, 350, with 120,000 miles on it. Spent 22 years in a garage being driven just enough to keep it in good shape. Absolutely love that truck. It's the most reliable car in my driveway, ac still works, still looks beautiful.... It's a shame yours was taken my the road. My hot rod project truck happens to be a 4 speed, 454, 76 Silverado stepside.
@ryurc3033 with the square bodied chevies so popular now, I wish I would have kept mine. ! Or could've bought several at low prices back in the early 90s, dirt cheap. Now, their like $8000+ for a project truck. Same for a 90s. Funny how the hobby changes.
Syclone sticker price was $33,000 @ the GM dealership that I visited back in early April of 1992 where I wound up buying a black on black '92 S15 GMC Sonoma ST 4.3 liter v6, 4x4 extended cab for about 2/3 the cost instead. Original Syclone pilot test vehicle WAS an extended cab as well, but GM only mfg the regular cab version for that compact pickup model, which was waay too cramped for my 6' 5" 230 lbs frame, and hella expensive @ the time. I even dislike full-size pickups that are regular cabs. My current pickup truck is a 2015 Chevy Silverado 2500 HD 4x4 extended cab, that I may be selling for perhaps an EV version in a year or two. My current truck has a 6.2 liter v8 engine, but I am retired and don't drive anywhere nearly as much as I used to while still employed, and pre-COVID 19.
The Shelby Dakota doesn't have an electric fan because Shelby decided to give it one for better performance, it has said fan because the original Dakota was never designed to accommodate a V8 and therefore couldn't fit the mechanical fan/fan clutch, and that's why the Shelby Dakota has 5 more horsepower than the same 318 in a contemporary Dodge Ram pickup... it's also why the 91+ Dakota that could be had with a V8 had a nose that was not flat like this first gen Dakota but was instead more convex in order to give the room for the 318 and fan/fan clutch assembly.

@timbrwolf1121 I agree and a clean one with low miles is big money but that them just last along time especially in the rustbelt out west they look mint
@@timbrwolf1121 Only for the 2wd though sadly. I did a full frame off resto to my 96. Love to put a hemi in it. Still can with lots of fabrication but rather use a drop in kit
@tomc8157 same here. When I get a 4x4 dakota it's getting a diesel swap. Om606 Mercedes, isuzu 4btd or Cummins 4bt. The 2wd is getting lowered 2" and might get viper or Daytona wheels
Nice video, thank you!
Im picking the Dakota, it hold a closer spot to my heart. But those GMCs are killer.
I owned a Shelby Dakota for several years, that was a fun truck. Terrifying in the rain, or if you needed to come to a short stop, but a absolute blast to drive.
This is only the second time I've heard Dennis say Punch It. He's normally the king of 25 MPH. I knew it was in there somewhere.
I own 1458 Red ShelbyDakota.. Love it. I have t ocheck out that Museum..
I owned a white Shelby Dakota # 1300 something. Fun except for transmission issues.
Cool to see this vehicle featured.
Ya the dodge trannies in those days were horrible, even the Dakota 5.9 rt trans robbed so much performance from that truck, a manual valve body with a b&m slap shifter really woke those things up. Like half a second off the quarter mile times if I remember correctly.
Back when GM had soul in their vehicles
The four words every cahr guy (love Mark’s accent) wants to say: “Can I punch it”?
Thanks Dennis, that was a great show.
All I did was watch this growing up
Those GMC Syclones are nice!!! My neighbor bought one new in 1991. And for me, I love my 2002 Ford SVT Lightning ⚡️⚡️It’s in mint condition with 32k miles.
Lightning gang
Too bad those 5.4L are trash first second and 3rd generation 👎🏼
The perfect race of trucks would be the Ford Lightning, the Chevy SS 454 and the Ram SS_T.
Looks like keeping the headlining new for that era was a lot harder than keeping everything else new.
Hello andrewdunbar828, You're 100% correct about the headliner-sag issue.
This is thanks to The EPA requiring auto manufacturers to use environmentally
friendly, water-based glue to adhere the cloth material to the cabin roof of cars, trucks & vans. This was an industry-wide issue in high-humidity regions; such as Florida; where this Dodge Shelby Dakota resides.
It took several years until a glue was developed that resolved this issue & met the "ridiculous" EPA requirements.
Best regards from Yucatan Mexico,
Ben
It was! My Dad and I had a used car lot in the mid 90s and we spent a lot of time restoring 80s cars and trucks! ;)
I had an '89 Dakota in the mid to late 90s. Loved the truck, but the headliner was already sagging like this back in the 90s.
I HAD A SYCLONE , LOVED IT
Owner of number 0828
Break boosting is necessary to break all the tires loose.
The syclone was way ahead of its time now performance and AWD is so common.
lovely cars, it must have been like christmas come early being given the opportunity to drive those beautys
That GMC is beautiful I would love to have one !
Good thing about the dakota, any L.A. smallblock bolts right in with no mods.
The GMC are awesome
I had the pleasure owning a Syclone in 95. Did the typical mods, TD06-20g turbo, upgraded intercooler, Lawrence Connelly chip and knock retard box. Scared the living tail out of my gIrlfriend and father, such a fun truck. Things you look back on, sold it for aMitsubishi 3000gt- VR4. 😂
Cool cassette deck in that Shelby.
Dennis blowing the carbon out of the Syclone 😂😂😂 Beautiful truck 🤩
what carbon🤣
Love this! I have been wanting for someone to compare these two awesome trucks! Would love to have both of these!!
And you can't fix the saggy headliner! You might be able to fix it easier if you don't wait much longer! Just giving a hard time great looking Shelby truck and a very awesome collection!
I like the quote about the Dakota: "it was not atall fast"
However, if i had to choose between the two i would go Dakota simply based on rarest.
Until this video i only knew about the Syclone... my dad had an s10 that was black and that truck is special in my memories but that dodge has got to be one of the rarest trucks ever produced.
I remember both vehicles especially the gmc I couldn’t afford one at the time but they were monsters
I had a Shelby Dakota, It was a great winter beater.
Syclone! ❤
Owned two GNs, always wanted a Syclone.
$16k in 1989 adjusted for inflation is $39,600 that Dakota was pretty expensive for its day
4:20 Side note, but that International is perfect.
the GMC Syclone is the best
I had a friend with one of these trucks with all the Mopar Performance parts. Also he had the dealer ship install 360 from the full size.
I had a 92 with the magnum 5.2l. That thing flew.
Yes they did they smoked fox body's 5.0
Maybe a 5.2 or a 5.9 would have kept up with the Syclone
@@samueljackson2478 if it was the small short bed with AWD. And yes I can say my old dodge would woops a fox body. I whooped many things with that truck. And it was ext cab and 4x4. It was no slouch.
As a kid I remember hanging out at American Sunroof on weekends while my Dad worked on the owners Auburn Boat tail speedster (my Dad worked at the GM tech center across the street in Warren Michigan)…I saw a dozen or so Typhoon/ Cyclones lined up in the process of being modified for dealerships…it was like seeing a UFO or something, I remember wanting the typhoon tho ever since😏
Great video
Love the headliner droop on the dodge.
AWD & a hairdryer! Yeah baby!
Awesome episode!
I used to troll and smoke dakota's in my 89 S10 Tahoe😂😂😂
Had a 91 S10 swb 4.3, could only imagine what it was like to drive a syclone with that power to weight and awd. Miss that little S10.
haha I doubt that unless you did extensive work to the engine!
92 93 Dakota magnum motors 5 speed 391 gear nothing could touch them
@@markusa5521 I'm sayin...mine was a '92 but auto
All American muscle love it ❤
My mom had a 79 Charger,black.. used to ride in the back hatchback
I'm hoping I can see that museum
I remember Bob Fish dealership out in West Bend, Wisconsin had one in their showroom. I feel in love and dreamt about owning it. Of course, I was just a young guy and couldn’t afford it. I know if I had it, would be taken care of and probably kept it as my baby.
GM for the win every time, including breaking down and expensive repairs.
Really cool to see this. I was around when the originals came out new. I seen the headliner is falling down in the Shelby truck lol
This dude has the best mustache in the business.
I love those Chrysler Shelbys! I really have a soft spot for Daytonas
side note though that 80s 90s fabric sag on the roof
Let's go to the fahm guys
What's truly sad is that less than 10 years after these Shelby models were produced Chrysler produced the Dodge Dakota R/T with the 360 Magnum, and I can attest that it was quick...but nothing crazy, it was just fun. I blew one sideways in the rain at 60 MPH with a heavy foot. I also drove one of the original OBS Ford Lightnings in black with red trim and a gray cloth interior with the 351 fuel injected V8 and it was alot of fun too, but still not fast.
Don’t have a Shelby but I’ve got a 99 Dakota r/t I want to start fixing up think their gonna gain value since so few were made
I'm sure differentiating between "quickest" and "fastest" comes up. The SRT10 is the fastest truck.
and that truck came out when?
Looked good sitting still
The quality of the gmc is much better then the dodge though I love to have either or.
Dream vehicles. They are slow in todays standards, for most people these vehicle's are just some old cheap junk but man they are so cool
The first time I saw a sports pick-up I laughed. The last time I saw one I did the same. Though to be honest some of these newer ones do look good. Can't lie.
Definitely gotta do something with the headliner in that Shelby
awesome trucks
I think my 1990 Ford Ranger with a 4cylinder is fast, I'd lose my friggin mind in that Syclone.
100 percent spelled with a S!!! Best friend owned one!
“Syclone” …😂🤣 👏👏👌
The Sonoma GT was an awesome truck also. It's a nonturbo version of the same truck.
I may have bought one.!
love those box body Chevys, my 1st was a '76 & had a '83, '86. '87 & a '90 454SS
That headliner in the Shelby was already drooping with such low miles.
It’s not miles that causes it. It’s time.
Was just listening finally looked up and was surprised to see it wasn't Ray Romano talking
RIP Carol Shelby and Mickey Thompson!
The Syclone was faster than the corvettes of the same years.
That Dakota was faster lol
@davidfoster5321 Nope. The Sylcone was twice as fast. Dakota had 8.7s 0-60, Syclone had 4.3s 0-60.
It was quicker but it wasn't remotely as fast, let alone faster.
@JyroOne you were talking about a vette....Stevie wonder could see the syclone or typhoon was faster than a shelby dakota lol
@JyroOne well duh...I was comparing to a vette same as op
That makes sense. Surely doing just for those 5hp wouldnt make much sense as a mod in comparison to other things that could have been done.
Don't under estimate the Shelby charger! My oldest son had an 86 and was clocked at 148 by our local sheriff who came knocking on my door at 10pm!
