The GMC Syclone was the world's quickest pickup | Revelations with Jason Cammisa | Ep. 13

  • The GMC Syclone wasn't just quick - in its day, it was among the quickest vehicles ever tested. And that success was lingering: the Turbo Truck was, by a significant margin, the quickest pickup truck in the world for a staggering 30 years. That's nearly twice as long as the McLaren F1 held the top-speed record.
Surprise: it also handled well, keeping up with the supercars of its day.
What's not a surprise: the Syclone, and its SUV-bodied brother, the Typhoon, were not conceived through the regular product-planning channels at General Motors: they were dreamt up by a Real Car Guy - Kim Nielsen - and pushed through using the help of outside consultants.
To get into production quickly, before the S-15 Sonoma pickup and Jimmy SUV ended their product cycle, Nielsen worked closely with ASC/McLaren and then Production Automotive Services to develop the turbo truck. And then PAS won the contract to engineer, certify, and build the SyTy (Syclone and Typhoon.)
With just a little wheelspin off the line, the Syclone blasted from 0 to 60 mph in just 4.3 seconds, quicker than the then-brand-new C4 Corvette ZR-1 and almost as quickly as the Ferrari F40.
30 years later, there are many fast SUVs on the market, but until the 702-hp 2021 Ram TRX, there's never again been a pickup this quick. And certainly none this good-looking: available only in black, with black trim that includes a deep air dam and (of chief importance) integrated fog lights.
Learn everything you need to know about the GMC Syclone in this entertaining episode of Revelations with Jason Cammisa.

I used to know a guy who had one of these. He was so proud of his 'rare, fast truck'. We drove to New York with it across Tennessee. He put it into a snowbank one year while trying to powerslide it, and after repairs, the parts no longer had matching serial numbers which caused him to hate it. He sold it in disgust. Now 20 years later he wishes he kept onto it.
Another friend of mine had his spouse inherit a red typhoon from her father, in running order about 3 years ago. But they keep it outside in the wisconson winter. Funny how I keep running into these things.

Seems it suffered the same 'turbo atrocity' that most Buick GrandNational's suffered...lag, lag, more lag, insuffiicent boost, too much boost...and oh yeah, premature turbo failure. Don't believe the lies...NONE of the early 'OEM turbo cars' were successful...not until aftermarket (and more-dependable) turbos came into play...they had far too much boost, insufficient oiling, insufficient (if at all) intercooling, and insufficient quality control to count on them...and in handicapped races (where you're racing the clock, not each other) YOU CAN'T RACE A TURBO...it has far too much variance!

A friend of mine leased one of these in the summer of '92 (the fact that they were even leasing these lends a lot of credence to the statement that they were languishing on dealer lots due to the sticker price) and I had the opportunity to drive it several times. My friend was something of a brute when it came to his cars, I remember him doing "neutral drops" in it (we were 18 y/o at the time). He'd rev it up and just slam it from neutral into gear. The result was impressive, though cringe-worthy: it would spin the tires for a fraction of a second and then take off like a banshee. Might have gotten even better than a 4.3 0-60 with that technique (not recommended). He ended up turning it in to the dealer early due to a severe "clunking" coming from the center diff, lol. That poor damned truck. My fondest memory of driving it was on a trip from Chicago up to Milwaukee for Summerfest. I remember arriving at the toll gates on the highway (remember those?!?) right next to a contemporary Corvette. The guy didn't even try. But I sure laid into it. By far the fastest vehicle on four wheels I had driven up to that point. Took several years to top that. Thanks for the memories, Jason - what a truck!

My best friend and I from school were 21 years old and had the Car and Driver issue to drive us crazy with wishful thinking of owning one. We got to see and sit in one at a GMC/Buick dealership in Kingsport, TN and simply ached at not being able to start or test drive it. The wide tires were gorgeous as was the rest of the truck. Now, I'm 52 years old and would so enjoy owning one. We did get to see the toned down version that was minus the turbo and rated at a flat 200 horse power. That one is featured near the end of this video in the image of the 3 GMCs in which it's the top one with the black rims.

I remember one kid got mad as hell when he finally caught up to me at a stop light and tried to call my truck a POS that was smoking like a train and fixing to blow up. Haha, I said “stfu crybaby, you’re just mad because you got spanked by a Farm truck!”. So badly missing the S-10 & S-15 lineups. The 4.3 was soooo reliable and quick. My S10 Blazers ( '91 & a '99) both had over 225k miles on them. The '91 was 292k before it was hit by someone who ran a stop sign. The '99 was 226k before the oil cooler line popped off of the radiator while on the highway causing a rod bearing to spin. My point is reliability. Seems like every time a company makes something worthwhile, they shortly thereafter stop producing it.

I had to explain to a few of my car guy friends that it was factory turbo'ed and seriously quick even without tuning, and was not just "some old truck with a dumb body kit" as one friend put it. 😂
For some reason this particular Syclone already had failing paint and I assume worn piston rings because it smoked like it burnt a little bit of oil. I have no idea why it was so ragged out at barely 10 years old, I never saw the owner beat on it. 🤷‍♂️
