An absolutely excellent guide. You covered a wealth of Ryu and fighting game information in such a short period of time. You got straight to the point of things with no mucking about! This is a very re-watchable guide that I'll be able to get more and more from with each watch, thank you iZonk Gaming. I'd like to suggest slowing down the pace of things in the video slightly, from the explanations to the in-game examples shown. Sometimes the in-game example, text on screen, and the information being said were either slightly ahead or behind one another making it hard for me to keep up at points.
Thank you!! Yes Im aware, its a choice. I want it to be compact and to the point. Thing is, I make a script, record the footage, find some match footage that fits, edit it into a full video and then I talk over it. I could also talk “live” while in training room, but than its much less structured and every time I drop a combo, theres more time wasted So im going with this format and accept that here and there the commentary is a little behind or in front (because I forget whats coming, I record the commentary in 1 go, 15 to 20 minutes straight)
I agree with everything @CVE said. The video is awesome! I also would recommend changing the font since it's somewhat hard to read especially if you're watching from the phone

Yup! Hes cool in SF6. The 1 draw back i have is that to do the cool stuff, you need denjin charge..but you cant decide when you use the denjin, it just goes into your next fireball. So you have to decide to stop throwing hadokens to save the denjin for a combo later in the game. Thats kinda dumb imo, because fireballs are his best feature AND you have to charge for 50 frames..hope they will improve on that later on, next update 😎

You’re right, they changed it. A nerf he doesnt really deserve. You should go for drive rush, hp, medium hashogeki, heavy dp, super. Still massive damage but costs 1 more drive gauge to land.

omg zonk love this guide, but i need some tips from drive rush it always comes out too late sometimes, playing on a ps4 controller should i get a stick? on pc btw.. i can do all this on modern but losing them neutreul moves bugs me. classic is so big brain
I'm pretty new to fighting games in general I have a basic understanding of how some moves are performed such as quarter circles, z moves and the ultimates or whatever the name of the big dmg move is but I can never get down connecting combos with each other and using my ult correctly cause I get to pressured when I'm actually playing against someone. At first I wanted to play ed cause I love boxing characters but I have a hard time using his teather in conjunction with other moves so my friend told me to play ryu since he's such a good starter character and I really like ryu so far but again I have trouble actually connecting moves together when in the heat of battle especially supers. Is this just easily solved by just practicing more or is there any tips yall have for getting better at the combo connections?
In part its practise and in part it’s true that some characters and moves are easier to perform than others. Ed indeed is a bit on the harder side to play. For ryu, if you wanna combo into his level 3 super, you can do it from his qcb lp move (hashogeki). Thats safe-ish. So mp, cmp, qcb lp .. it has lots of active frames so you have some time to input the qcf qcf kick to go into his level 3 super Start there. Ryu also has light confirms; clk, lp, lp to confirm into a special. You will need to go into his heavy uppercut from there if it hits. Thats harder to do, because it contains 2 shortcuts. You can try Practising: Clk, lp, ➡️+lp .. and then ⬇️↘️➡️ heavy punch. The ➡️ you held with pressing the last lp counts as the ➡️ in his ➡️⬇️↘️➡️ uppercut motion Then, as soon as you did the fireball motion. Ryu goes into his upper ut. You then immediately do another ⬇️↘️➡️ with kick this time That will give you the level 3 super canceled from his uppercut Try those! In training mode you can go to settings, give yourself infinite super gauge try it on a dummy that doesnt block. If you get the combos off well after practising a few days, you can set the dummy to random block. Now you can really practise confirming into the special. On block you let it go, on hit you do the special into the super If you are getting good at confirming that, you can def do it in game as well. Good luck! Making hours in training and knowing what you train is definitely step 1
@iZonkGaming2021 you're awesome I didn't expect this amount of info thanks a bunch! I'll definitely be going into training mode to try those moves. Again you're awesome tyty!
In a fireball war... OD version fireballs will completely destroy non OD fireballs and lose no durability. For example, Ken's OD Hadouken will break through Ryu's Denjin Charged Hadouken and still hit twice.
Yea the OD ones have special properties, more than in SFV. They are helped by the system mechanics. If OD fireball punishes, it knocks down. Ken OD hadoken does not knock down on hit, but if it goes through a fireball and punishes the opponents recovery, it WILL knock them down which happens in fireball wars usually Which is fair because you are spending 1/3th of you entire drive gauge on it and get limited damage from it while still being out of range most of the time. They balanced it will this time around IMO
Its set to dummy, you have to manually set it to cpu lvl something. Level 4 is easy, level 7 is hard imo. Start with 4, the cpu is quite inactive so its pretty easy but at level 7 and 8 its hard. Its an AI so you dont have to record him yourself Welcome to the fighting game community! If you have any questions, Im glad to help
Any thoughts on modern controls for ryu? Never played sf, not sure what to start with. I am an NRS player, and we’re looking at the controls I cannot help I feel like one button specials are insanely powerful. I have seen a lot of top streetfighter players commenting that you better at least know how to use modern controls and also lots just saying it’s flat out better depending on character
Ehh i dont think they will be better at high level, i did see the videos about it yes. They are great to get into the game and be able to immediately do some stuff and react to things. I dont think classic is that hard and that will unlock the full character. Im a classic controlls guy. In happy modern is here, it will draw more players and give newbees the chance to atleast do some cool stuff quickly to draw them in 😎
@@iZonkGaming2021 question for you - I am using a dualshock 4. I am not gonna buy a stick for sf6. One problem I am having is getting special moves to do the more damaging option by pressing KK or PP. I find it super awkward on the dualshock 4 to have to hit square (LP) and triangle (MP). Is there a more optimal button layout for controllers? I may look into hori type controllers which are 6 button layout. I donno. Are there good players that use dualshock and Xbox controllers? Thank you. I have been using classic and I’m just now getting the flow of it. It is SO much different than MK11. Like harder in some ways, easier in others.
@@howdydoodydoo3631 long SF player here and, I had the exact same problem as you (not everyone starts playing with a stick, right?) and after searching A LOT, I found the best solution possible to fix this when I was playing sf4 back in the day. Remap your R1 and R2 for high punch + medium punch and high kick + medium kick respectively. You will not only be able to use OD everytime but also keep the high normals! And this happens bc of the priority system. You won't be able to use the high special moves though, but honestly, they are the ones you would use the less (especially for combos). Keep using your L1 and L2 for drive parry and impact. I did this in SF4 and worked like a charm, my L2 was for Focus attack (kinda similar mechanic to D.impact) Hope it helps!
The first clp is blocked, the second counter hits. Counter hit adds 2 frames of hit stun. Clp is +4 on hit. The start up of cmp is 6 frames so this does not combo, it only combos because the clp is a counter hit I do that smoothly because i expect a counter hit. I did not react, i did that string already. Many people mash after blocking 1 button because almost all buttons are minus on block, it ends the turn of the attacker. If you do clp clp..it ‘frame traps’, you cant press there. If the defender does, i get the counter hit. Its likely that happens there, therefor i pre emptively so cmp to optimize the combo Hope that helps!
In the last combo, I can't seem to reliably combo the J-HP to HK at the beginning of it (no problem with the rest lol) Is there any trick to it? OH yeah and instead of that I've been doing J-HP into MP and C-MP since those seem to connect into a combo more easily.
The trick is to press the HP in your jump in very late, when Ryu is almost on the ground. That was the jump hp will combo. In matches (when not stunned) I think mp, cmp is far more reliable so thats a good solution!
Yes you can, every button that can cancel to specials can also cancel to DI. However, only during the cancel window. It happens to me aswell that i try to DI back and it wont come out. That means you were late
When he says "At this point we recover in time" at 1.54 does he recover from hadouken then block the drive impact then use one of his own? How does he tech the drive impact? Thanks.
A move has start up, active and recovery frames. Together they are his “total frames” Drive impact has 26 frames start up. My hadoken was done recovering, i was free to move so i could drive impact back because his 26f start up werent over yet
@joeymaps yw thx for watching! There is also a corner combo in here using od hashigeki into back hp that doesnt work anymore. Kinda sucks they changed od hashigeki. It wasnt even that dominant and Ryu isnt considered to be that strong anyway
@@iZonkGaming2021 so I have seen and heard a lot. Unfortunate because I love playing ryu and will continue to. However Sonic Sol told me at Evo if I want to really compete, I’m gonna have to pick up Luke or Ken so there’s that balance of do I want to have fun and/or compete in my region at tourneys.
Ah ok, thats a punish yea. You van turn on the frame meter, watch how minus it is and the use the best button you have that has less start up frames than the advantage Spiral arrow on block is usually like..-8. So Kim can do her cmp, mp, hp bread and butter combo.
So while watching this I tried out some combos, and I noticed that your combos are doing so much more damage. Any reason why that might be? I’m doing the exact same combos and yet they aren’t doing nearly as much as what yours are
It also eats away the opponents drive gauge, so that they have less resources to make a come back while your drive gauge rebuilds during the animation (level 3 specifically). Lvl1 eats 1/2 bar, lvl 2 eats 1 bar, and lvl3 eats 1,5 bars of gauge on hit while you yourself gain back bar during the combo. So it also shifts the momentum to the attacker besides the damage inflicted
Is SRK only anti-air invincible and vulnerable to everything else? I think i am getting stuffed by certain moves like in SFV. Excluding EX-SRK of course.
Yes, regular uppercuts (all 3 versions) are invulnerable to air attacks (in sfv its only medium). Its not a wake up option or a neutral tool. Its just for anti air and his heavy shoryuken is also his most damaging combo ender OD version is fully invincible on frame 1 to everything yes. If you wanna press buttons on wake up, use your cr lp or st lp Good luck! Hes ‘finally’ a fun character this game!
Hey Donald, i’ll try to help, you do need this combo so you cant really skip it. So there are 2 possible reasons your timing is off. 1. You do it too fast (you can tell by your crouching medium punch not coming out) or 2. You do it too slow (your cmp will come out but its not a 2 hit combo from the stand medium punch) My guess is that you do it too fast. Keep trying it and change the timing of the crouch mp after stand mp. Its a feeling. I can tell you its an X amount of frames or 0. Something seconds but its a feeling at the end of the day. You got this! Overall it seems the timing is a bit slower than in sfv
Green is called “drive rush”, a core mechanic of sf6. You hold down mp+mk and tab forward twice (cost 1 bar) or you hit them with a button (start with hp for now) and tab forward twice, you can now combo. I have a video on it (sf6 tips - drive rush) Gold is an Over Drive move, also a system mechanic but this is different per character. It’s a powered up version of a move. Almost every special move has a powered up version. Example for Ryu and his fireball: ⬇️↘️➡️ + punch is a fireball right? If you do ⬇️↘️➡️ + 2 punches you get the gold version, a better version. Costs 2 bars In the video i use ⬇️↘️➡️ + 2 kick buttons a lot, the OverDrive version of his Blade Kick, a massive kick where Ryu turns gold and kicks his opponent across the screen against the wall
Haha welll, Ryu has one of the least “spammable” movesets in the game but I agree; you can make it far in the ranks by just overwhelming people with a very gimmicky offense at this stage of the game. I (try to) play solid, but sure i get frustrated as well when losing to insanity 😅
It is sad to find this video very late, I trained Ryu with the wrong muscle memory, specially like to spam Tatsu every time to whiff cuz my monkey brain thought it was cool when I was noob-er, now it seems like the only way for me to fix it is to not play this game for 5 months at least...
Naw what you can do is play against the cpu in training on a level you’re comfortable with, both unlimited health and just play with the new style only. Long pokes, anti air, cmk drive rush into heavy punch, back hp light tatsu…drive rush and time a throw. The basics only, dont do anything but some basic stuff you practised and you will rewire quickly. No matches, under stress you will do the old stuff
Hadouken is not a block string ender. It is not safe on block. I can punish it all day every day with standing lk for example with Ken. You are going to get people blown up for telling them something like this in a guide.
It has a lot of push back and light hadoken recovers decently fast, its fine in my opinion to mix in with hashogeki and non special enders especially with some space. The average player who watches these guides is bronze to silver here, its fine to throw out there and if some one goes into lk, dp and it works, well, then you know you should be more careful
Try level 4 😎 its not about beating him, but about being in situations that you recognize. Pressing the same strings that you should press over and over, reacting to jumps over and over..its about muscle memory, knowing what to do and just doing it when you see a situation happens. You have to practise. Takes time. You got this!
@@iZonkGaming2021 i am supremely new to fighting game and sf6. im guessing clp means crouch light punch and kick - the kicks i cant ? im using modern controls. i was able to do lp+fireball. Also tried lp+throw - timing bad maybe sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesnt 😅

In part its practise and in part it’s true that some characters and moves are easier to perform than others. Ed indeed is a bit on the harder side to play.
For ryu, if you wanna combo into his level 3 super, you can do it from his qcb lp move (hashogeki). Thats safe-ish. So mp, cmp, qcb lp .. it has lots of active frames so you have some time to input the qcf qcf kick to go into his level 3 super
Start there.
Ryu also has light confirms; clk, lp, lp to confirm into a special. You will need to go into his heavy uppercut from there if it hits. Thats harder to do, because it contains 2 shortcuts. You can try Practising:
Clk, lp, ➡️+lp .. and then ⬇️↘️➡️ heavy punch.
The ➡️ you held with pressing the last lp counts as the ➡️ in his ➡️⬇️↘️➡️ uppercut motion
Then, as soon as you did the fireball motion. Ryu goes into his upper ut. You then immediately do another ⬇️↘️➡️ with kick this time
That will give you the level 3 super canceled from his uppercut
Try those!
In training mode you can go to settings, give yourself infinite super gauge try it on a dummy that doesnt block.
If you get the combos off well after practising a few days, you can set the dummy to random block. Now you can really practise confirming into the special. On block you let it go, on hit you do the special into the super
If you are getting good at confirming that, you can def do it in game as well.
Good luck! Making hours in training and knowing what you train is definitely step 1
@iZonkGaming2021 you're awesome I didn't expect this amount of info thanks a bunch! I'll definitely be going into training mode to try those moves. Again you're awesome tyty!
@@iZonkGaming2021Not the guy you replied to but same case with me, thanks for such detailed information
Ken OD hadoken does not knock down on hit, but if it goes through a fireball and punishes the opponents recovery, it WILL knock them down which happens in fireball wars usually
Which is fair because you are spending 1/3th of you entire drive gauge on it and get limited damage from it while still being out of range most of the time. They balanced it will this time around IMO
New to fighting games. How do you record high level AI to zoning practice? I don’t understand how to do that?
Its set to dummy, you have to manually set it to cpu lvl something. Level 4 is easy, level 7 is hard imo. Start with 4, the cpu is quite inactive so its pretty easy but at level 7 and 8 its hard. Its an AI so you dont have to record him yourself
Welcome to the fighting game community! If you have any questions, Im glad to help
@@iZonkGaming2021 thank you!
In happy modern is here, it will draw more players and give newbees the chance to atleast do some cool stuff quickly to draw them in 😎
@@iZonkGaming2021 question for you -
I am using a dualshock 4.
@@howdydoodydoo3631 u can use the left shoulder buttons for KK and PP
I did this in SF4 and worked like a charm, my L2 was for Focus attack (kinda similar mechanic to D.impact)
Hope it helps!
Smart! Sounds legit
9:42 how did you manage to combo clp, clp, cmp so smoothly there?
The first clp is blocked, the second counter hits. Counter hit adds 2 frames of hit stun. Clp is +4 on hit. The start up of cmp is 6 frames so this does not combo, it only combos because the clp is a counter hit
I do that smoothly because i expect a counter hit. I did not react, i did that string already. Many people mash after blocking 1 button because almost all buttons are minus on block, it ends the turn of the attacker. If you do clp clp..it ‘frame traps’, you cant press there. If the defender does, i get the counter hit. Its likely that happens there, therefor i pre emptively so cmp to optimize the combo
Hope that helps!
Can you cancel low medium kick to drive impact? Always get hit with drive impact and can never counter with drive impact from low medium kick
Yes you can, every button that can cancel to specials can also cancel to DI. However, only during the cancel window. It happens to me aswell that i try to DI back and it wont come out. That means you were late
@@iZonkGaming2021 guess gotta to be super duper quick
Would been nice to be able to see what button are you pressing. I'm new to SF and sometimes i can't tell what button you are using
Yea understandable, i have gotten this feedback a few times now and implemented it for newer guides, like Ken for instance 👌
When he says "At this point we recover in time" at 1.54 does he recover from hadouken then block the drive impact then use one of his own? How does he tech the drive impact?
Thanks.
A move has start up, active and recovery frames. Together they are his “total frames”
Drive impact has 26 frames start up. My hadoken was done recovering, i was free to move so i could drive impact back because his 26f start up werent over yet
@@iZonkGaming2021 Ahhhhhhhh of course thank you man and thank you for the video I really appreciate it as a newcomer to SF.
What platform do you play on? Classic bindings on Xbox is so hard
I play on Steam (pc) with a hitbox controller
Did they nerf the damage on that combo at the end? I even did ex Hshogeki but only got 5587 total and you had 5900 ish
Actually it’s 5655. Ex has hashogeki does less at 5587…
Yes, certain parts were recorded during the open beta and ryu did receive a few minor changes, including ex hashogeki. Sharp!
@@iZonkGaming2021 I see, makes sense. Very swaggy combo to lvl 3 btw. Thank you for hitting me back!
I love Street Fighter and I love Street Fighter 6. Except for the long combos. I'd much rather it be more primitive in the combo department.
Will you do punish guides against all characters?
Umm not anytime soon but could be an idea. You mean how to counter the biggest gimmick every character uses?
@@iZonkGaming2021 something like that. Like say Cammy does spiral arrow and you block, how do you counter it?
Ah ok, thats a punish yea. You van turn on the frame meter, watch how minus it is and the use the best button you have that has less start up frames than the advantage
Spiral arrow on block is usually like..-8. So Kim can do her cmp, mp, hp bread and butter combo.
So while watching this I tried out some combos, and I noticed that your combos are doing so much more damage. Any reason why that might be? I’m doing the exact same combos and yet they aren’t doing nearly as much as what yours are
For Ryu, i dunno. Are you playing on modern controls?
Tysm
yw!!
What’s the point of finishing a long combo w a super when it’s gonna do like half of the original damage?
It also eats away the opponents drive gauge, so that they have less resources to make a come back while your drive gauge rebuilds during the animation (level 3 specifically). Lvl1 eats 1/2 bar, lvl 2 eats 1 bar, and lvl3 eats 1,5 bars of gauge on hit while you yourself gain back bar during the combo.
So it also shifts the momentum to the attacker besides the damage inflicted
Wouldve been nice to have the inputs on the side!
Thx. Yes i implemented that in the marisa guide since people asked about it
Is SRK only anti-air invincible and vulnerable to everything else? I think i am getting stuffed by certain moves like in SFV. Excluding EX-SRK of course.
Yes, regular uppercuts (all 3 versions) are invulnerable to air attacks (in sfv its only medium). Its not a wake up option or a neutral tool. Its just for anti air and his heavy shoryuken is also his most damaging combo ender
OD version is fully invincible on frame 1 to everything yes. If you wanna press buttons on wake up, use your cr lp or st lp
Good luck! Hes ‘finally’ a fun character this game!
@@iZonkGaming2021 Appreciate the response and confirmation! Thanks also for the awesome guide!
I’m having a really hard time with timing. I try to link medium punch into crouching medium punch and I’m not getting it.
Hey Donald, i’ll try to help, you do need this combo so you cant really skip it.
So there are 2 possible reasons your timing is off. 1. You do it too fast (you can tell by your crouching medium punch not coming out) or 2. You do it too slow (your cmp will come out but its not a 2 hit combo from the stand medium punch)
My guess is that you do it too fast. Keep trying it and change the timing of the crouch mp after stand mp. Its a feeling. I can tell you its an X amount of frames or 0. Something seconds but its a feeling at the end of the day. You got this!
Overall it seems the timing is a bit slower than in sfv
His forward HK is cancellable into ex tatsu
I did not know this when making the guide, thank you!
My issue with this game is my inputs being eaten. i see them on screen but they don't come out
Yes this happens unfortunately , they will have to patch that
Forward heavy kick combos into ex tatsu
I did not know!
Do Luke next please
I picked him up last week and got master with Luke already, I might do it! I enjoyed Luke and maybe its time i keep playing some one..
@@iZonkGaming2021 I already play ryu. I may prefer Luke over Ken.. who knows
Ryu the character you always have 30 minutes in between link combos 😂
how do we turn gold or green ??
Green is called “drive rush”, a core mechanic of sf6. You hold down mp+mk and tab forward twice (cost 1 bar) or you hit them with a button (start with hp for now) and tab forward twice, you can now combo. I have a video on it (sf6 tips - drive rush)
Gold is an Over Drive move, also a system mechanic but this is different per character. It’s a powered up version of a move. Almost every special move has a powered up version.
Example for Ryu and his fireball: ⬇️↘️➡️ + punch is a fireball right? If you do ⬇️↘️➡️ + 2 punches you get the gold version, a better version. Costs 2 bars
In the video i use ⬇️↘️➡️ + 2 kick buttons a lot, the OverDrive version of his Blade Kick, a massive kick where Ryu turns gold and kicks his opponent across the screen against the wall
I was expecting simple combo tutorials lol
No no we put in the work over here my friend! 😅
What’s wrong? Get up!
Haha yea I like his ‘new’ look and demeanor, wish they made his denjin charge cooler (like..let the player decide when he wants to use it)
There's 2 ryu players that reach the same rank. The players who play like this and the players who spam attacks since everything Ryu is spammable
Lol I'm, way too bad for this. I'm trying the Ryu vs lvl 7 AI and I can't land a damn hit. Just absolutely steamrolling me.
Try level 4 😎 its not about beating him, but about being in situations that you recognize. Pressing the same strings that you should press over and over, reacting to jumps over and over..its about muscle memory, knowing what to do and just doing it when you see a situation happens. You have to practise. Takes time. You got this!
down medium kick into donkey kick - its all i can do :/
If you add clp, clk, lp, fireball (heavy shoryuken is better but more difficult) you are on your way 👊
@@iZonkGaming2021 i am supremely new to fighting game and sf6. im guessing clp means crouch light punch and kick - the kicks i cant ? im using modern controls.
i was able to do lp+fireball. Also tried lp+throw - timing bad maybe sometimes it connects and sometimes it doesnt 😅
F hk cancel with tatsu ex
Hard to follow
Well, the game is pretty complicated so..i hope you can take away some stuff atleast 👌
