I like Van Damme's "The Quest" (1996) even though it's one of his lesser known films. It's sort of like "Bloodsport" featuring an international martial arts tournament, but it has more sophisticated fight choreography and cinematography and it's set in the 1920s.

    • @johnpatrickmason7067
      @johnpatrickmason7067 2 หลายเดือนก่อน

yes the quest is a very good film too, the costumes, the landscapes as well as the period sets (1925) are magnificent, moreover, it is Jean Claude Van Damme himself who directed the film and choreographed the fights, with around fifteen fighters practicing different martial arts to have the most authentic fights possible, we also find his Belgian friends, Abdel Qissi, brother of Mohammed Qissi (tong po kickboxer) who plays the role of the Mongolian fighter, that the we also find in the role of Attila in Lionheart as in addition to the film Order, we also find in the role of the Spanish fighter Peter Malota (Tae Kwon Do/Hapkido) who we could also see in the film double impact , without forgetting the presence of Roger Moore.

He's actually wearing what sailors wore back then. The bump on his head just appeared and he had it for quite a few years. I think maybe it was a calcium deposit. I remember him speaking about it once. This is one of the very few martial arts films that will make you tear up. Great story and action and even acting, but it just doesn't have the budget it deserves. It was really his first serious acting role.

Other participating actors I'm surprised no one brings up:
Lisa Pelikan (who portrayed Helene, wife of the late Francois / Lyon's sister-in-law / Nicole's mom) appeared in the Carrie knock-off, Jennifer; Violet in Swing Shift / Rebecca in Ghoulies!
Tony Valentino (who portrayed the doctor at 26:58) appeared in Angel Town with Olivier Gruner - another work of Imperial Entertainment - not long before!
Brian Thompson (who portrayed Russell) appeared as one of the street punks in Terminator / Night Slasher in Cobra / Shao Kahn in MK Annihilation (God forbid...) / Buffalo Bob in Joe Dirt!
And despite being barely seen at the end, Jeff Speakman was one of the Mansion Security guards - not long before The Perfect Weapon.

JCVD's next film after Kickboxer, first major smash with an American studio (also co-writer) and 1 of 2 films in the same year.
Me and my father saw this on opening day.
We loved more than the flghts.
The story was compelling and grounded.
The film's trailer was presented like he wanted to seek revenge for his brother while competing in underground fighting.
But even so, the movie turned out to be just as good in any event.
Ashley Johnson (Nicole) makes her film debut after doing the ABC sitcom, Growing Pains.
Michel Qissi (Tong Po in Kickboxer) is one of the foreign legion guys, Moustafa while his brother Abdel plays Lyon's final opponent, Attila.
Also one of the legionnaires fighting Lyon in the beginning was Billy Blanks (early film career/pre-Tae Bo).
The drama in Lionheart does tug the heart strings as is Lyon just wanted to fight for his family.
JCVD has done his share of films that actually have decent drama and not just action.
Other similar films are Nowhere to Run (1993), The Quest (1996) and Legionnaire (1998).
Btw, you ask why Van Damme does no splits in Lionheart?
He decided that the story was too serious for him to do them, even if it was his signature.

Altho Tommy Morrison (alias Tommy Gun) is not a real actor, but a real boxer (and by the why a f*ing amazing one, RIP), he did a great job! The interaction between father and son (by the why its his real live son, may he also RIP), is absolut top notch. How he is getting from rich to poor again, the interaction with Adriane and not to forget the phenomenal final fight (Rocky is fighting for the 1st and for the last time, as a street fighter, including kicks). Hola Vanessa 🎬 🍿🤩
Bang Smash !!! 💥 No mercy , Van Damme is Back!! 👊
This gives you all the kick ass action you've come to expect but focus more on the plot then before which I like. Van Damme also wrote this & wanted it to be more like a old fashioned shaggy boxing melodrama going up against the blood thirsty elites. The opening scenes with his brother was harrowing. It could have been a straight forward simple revenge thriller but having to fight to support his family so they can breakaway make it all the more special. The french foreign legion can be brutal ( they make you march with stone in your boots) the Action scenes were thrilling. Pelikan was very convincing as a grieving window & little Nicole was sweet , naturally gifted as a actress , it was wonderful to see their bond develop.
The way they show LA , it always seems to be gang infested wasteland & glamorous at the top. ( check out zocalo public square / the takeaway online about what southern California was like in the early 90s). Joshua made a great sidekick , they always get the funniest lines. The choreographed fights were great & delivery every time , Leon sure knows how to strike the soft spots. The pool was kinda ridiculous but different , ha what fashion was like back then , I've said you should be offered a shampoo commicial , you've got swooshing down to perfection.
Caldera as the villains was vamping it up , i dunno know if those big earrings will make a comeback. That close up scene could have got steamy but there's no way Leon would go for that no matter how much she showers him gifts , her kind just uses people & never capable of feeling anything real , maybe that's why she bet on the other guy , I don't think she knew about he's injury.
For the final fight , Attila did look formidable but Leon was bringing it to begin with until it turned into a thrashing , yes it did look like there was a lot of cuts , & the crazy sound effects it would be funny to see how thats done . The slo mo flying round kicks are always fire . Like what always happens in these movies when the stakes are high & it's all or nothing you reach deep down & believe in yourself that you can win. I like how much your into it cheering & throwing punches like me too. I'm glad those guys stopped pursuing him & finally came to their senses. I loved how it ended with them all together again.
I've already mentioned some more Van Damme movies worth watching , there's also Hard Target , Nowhere to Run & Maximum Risk , Lone Wolf free to watch but i haven't seen it. There's also his new movie Darkness of Man that proves he's stíl got it.
Muchas gracias , your reactions are the best , hope everythings going well , I'll send another donation as soon as I can Quidate , Adios 🤗 💕🖐️

If there's one JCVD movie I want you to see is Street Fighter. But I rather have that wait for sometime until you get to see more of his other films that are cult classics, especially Double Impact. I do hope you will do Addams Family 90's movie soon unless you already saw it. Let's keep rolling.

26:39 The guy on the left with the moustache was one of the fighters in Bloodsport. He was the guy that Chong Li broke his leg with the bone coming out.

One of the French Legion guys "Mustafa" ( Mohamed Quissi in real life) chasing Van Damme is Tong Po from Kickboxer and the Capoeira guy from Bloodsport. And the driver in the Jeep in the beginning, where they bring Van Damme the letter is/was Stefanos Miltsakakis! A great guy who played in many Van Damme movies and also was a friend of his. He passed away a few years ago. There is a documentary about him. Also the final opponent "Attila" is is Mohamed Quissi's brother in real life.

The guy who plays Attila and Jean Claude Van-Damme are close friends in real life, they came to America together, I remember him sharing a story of stealing a chicken from a store and sharing it with him because they were so hungry and had practically no money when they arrived.
