Tommy Gunn Morrison was an excellent boxer in real life,and actually beat George Foreman. Then tommy tragically died of HIV.
This movie was grossly UNDERRATED and got an unfair rap because of the first 4. But I had rocky fatigue with the unrealistic rocky 4 beating Drago. It was unrealistic number 4.
This one was very realistic and close to our hearts with the Mickey montage thoughts.
Also Duke played the Don King like character very realistic.

Although not the best of the series, Talia Shire always has a great performance! The chemistry that she has with Sly is always amazing!
I hear so many people say that, but this movie is twice as good as Rocky 4. Not the best music, too many flashbacks, and interminable training montages.
@@B-a-t-m-a-n I've always said this - There are 2 types of Rocky fans - the ones who love the action and boxing (Rocky III and IV) and then there's the fans who love and adore the characters (Rocky, Rocky II, Rocky V and Balboa.)
@@TayannaStudios That makes sense, but the action was pretty damn good in the other movies besides 3 and 4! I just watched IV recently and was kind of disappointed in that one. I believe there's a director's cut of that one out there and I'd like to see if that fixed any of the points I saw as shortcomings. I plan on watching 5 again in the next few days.

@@TayannaStudios I'm just about certain that most people love BOTH. Each thing sustains the other. Rocky is a great character....the supporting cast are excellent in their various roles, as well...but you could take the same personalities, and the results would be quite different if Rocky were, say, a veterinarian or an accountant. Having the main character be a boxer allows for each film to build to a melodramatic climax that would be difficult to conjure up in most situations. But having Rocky be such a noble, impressive man allows the boxing contests to transfix the viewer in a way that stories about a typical, thuggish boxer never could.
You’re spot on about Sly’s writing at times. Even though yes, Rocky V is the worst of the series, that scene with Mickey teared me tf up seeing it again just now. It hits a lot harder for me now than it did originally, everything Mickey says rings horribly true.
The good news is that the next film, *Rocky Balboa*, is magnificent and features another iconic Rocky speech. Just make sure you’ve got some tissues handy though…
A lot of the problems with V are rooted in it's inexplicable need to fit into early 90s culture. The other rocky films don't try to be a product of the time and V does. V is full, full of indivually great moments, but as an overall package it's left lacking

@@adamc1667 I do not mean the time period. Rocky V tries to fit in with other 90s films of the time. Rocky IV did not.
In the original script, Rocky was supposed to die during the fight. It had to be redone because of the outcry of protests against him dying. I bet that's why they added the scenes with Mickey, so when he was on the edge, Mickey brought him back with the line "get up you son of a bitch...cause Mickey loves you". Iconic line, and so motivating. You knew that Tommy had no chance after that. He got his ass whooped. You will love Rocky Balboa. It's amazing. Also, his son in this movie is his real son Sage, who unfortunately passed away a few years ago. RIP Sage Stallone RIP Tommy Morrison

I'm glad you decided to watch it and make up your own mind about whether or not it's a good movie. I just hate it when people tell reactors to not watch certain movies or not continue with a movie franchise because they didn't like them for some reason. They rob you of the experience and they rob the people who do like them of watching your reaction to it.
Many didnt like the fact Slyvester Stallone didnt direct this film which may had been why this is the most disliked movie of the franchise. On to Rocky VI (Rocky Balboa) The movie takes place 16 years later from Rocky V. For many Rocky VI redeems itself from Rocky V.

Revisiting this again, even know it's not everyone's favourite & as much flack as it gets it could have been a great way to finish the franchise on. Bringing in Tommy a real fighter does give the movie an added gritty edge with the dynamic between them with rocky losing his wealth & trying to warn him on the pitfalls of greedy managers & not being suduced by fame.
I did find some scenes moving like when micky returned giving those cufflinks like an angel on rocky's shoulder's & returning to his philly roots with his real life son sparing , beating up the bullies & them together atop the famous steps, it's also special seeing the love with Adrian standing by his side through everything. I not that sure a street fight as a climax was a good idea, I suppose they were trying something different but it's not really wot fans want, rocky shines best when it's in the ring,but there is also a alternative ending that you might like more, anyway I always enjoy how honest your reactions are not holding back pulling any punches & wearing your heart on your sleeve , before I go I've left some trivia & links looking forward to rocky Balboa I think your enjoy that much more, Thanks take care & have a happy spring week 😀🧡✌️

RIP Tommy Morrison. He was Tommy Gunn’s actor and he was a great boxer in the 90’s. Unfortunately his career was cut short and met an unfortunate end.

This was one of the most entertaining reactions I’ve watched.
At 39:42, that smile .. her face just completely lights up. (wow)
The scene showing Rocky punching the body bag as Tommy Gunn fought Cane in the title match made me think that Rocky will eventually come out of retirement and fight Gunn for the title in the ring. Of course, that did not happen and we all got the street fight that was more personal between the two.
Rocky had enough boxing matches. Wouldn't be appropriate in this story. The street fight was the perfect conclusion.
Symbolically, George Washington Duke and Union Cane are this movie's versions of Don King and Mike Tyson.
I enjoyed how fired up she got about Duke and his comment about Adrian. It was kind of hot actually . Lol.
When I saw Rocky V real time, I didn't like it, much like most other people, but other the years, I've come to appreciate it. It's him going back to the roots, where it all started. Many didn't like the final fight being a street brawl and not in the ring but I think for this movie, it was the perfect setting. About Duke... this character perfectly personifies the real life Don King, the most sleezy, vile boxing promoter there was, universally hated by the public. You don't see him much these days, but back in the 90s when this movie was released, he was a big overshadowing presence in the boxing world.

Like most fans of the Rocky franchise I don't much care for this movie, but your reaction made it worth watching 😎. The final Rocky movie is much better and feels more like the others.
I thought this movie was way better than IV. For me, the best part of IV was Paulie's admission to Rocky when they were walking the runway to reach the ring. You know, the "unzip myself" speech. There was just too much training montage in IV in my opinion.
@@B-a-t-m-a-n My favorite is two. Four was the most hollywood. So it also had the strongest opponent, the longest montages, flash, and made the biggest show of the fight at the end. This one gets a streetfight which is short and uneventful by comparison to most of the boxing matches we got in the other films. Although I liked Apollo as a character/antagonist more, Drago definitely worked really well as an intimidating villain. Tommy here was more bratty like an overgrown kid, I want I want I want - grrr I didn't get what I want now i'm angry. I never like watching childish villains unless they are comedic relief. Then we have rocky oblivious to what was going on for most of the movie, which never happens in the others, he has periods where he needs a wakeup call, but here it was most of the film. So in this one it was harder to like watching rocky, because he didn't have much control or input in the events of the film.
@@moviewatcher1127 I agree about 2 and 4. The thing is, by 5, I didn't consider Rocky to be a boxer anymore. He was all messed up physically, and so to me, that was his excuse for his muddled thinking. Tommy was not a very good actor per se, but I think he acted the part he was given. He was a patsy. He wasn't really the bad guy, either, that was the promoter!
@@B-a-t-m-a-n I agree he played it as it was written. I thought about this after I wrote it. In this film rocky isn't the main character for much of it, it lacks a main character. Tommy is for a while. Rocky is oblivious to much of what is going on or the larger plot run by Duke, or what's going on with his son, and as such isn't able to react or act to it. Tommy has a bit more agency in the film for most of it but even he isn't fully the main character.
Couple that with Rocky being in the trainers role not the role of the fighter and he's more of a supporting character aka Creed. I never watched Creed fully, but I didn't like Tommy as a character, and when you don't like the main character its hard to like the film. In the moments rocky takes back agency or control of the narrative, I liked the film again.

I grew up with Rocky, and even today he is a role model in every way and approaches life from every angle. I really appreciate your videos and what stands out, apart from the fact that you are very beautiful, is how big a heart you have., and it shows through the emotion you exude in your videos, and particularly in the Rocky saga. I think this an underrated movie. It is a more realistic story than rocky 4 . It just suffers from being a little rushed in production maybe or just not filmed properly or something like that. but I bet many old boxers relate to this story.

just watching rocky makes you a better person because it shows you the proper way to get respect and honour. also what rocky says i believe is true that its not how hard you get hit its how hard you can get hit and still get up and keep going.
I understand that they changed the ending because they didn't want to kill off Rocky, but I wish they had kept in some of the parts that they changed. The part where Rocky tries to calm the crowd down outside the bar, asking them why they want to see two people hurt each other. The part where he has flashbacks not just to Drago but to Clubber Lang as well, who also did major psychological damage to Rocky. And the part where Rocky helps Tommy up after the fight, who in turn looks embarrassed at what he did.

Love this film, it's jarring I think for people who loved the 80's cheese we got with 3 & 4, but it focused on another part of the world of boxing. Duke was modeled after Don King "Only in America" a boxing promoter who ultimately used Mike Tyson's fame to his own advantage.
I liked Tommy Gunn, if the directors cut is made available (or a Writers Cut as Stallone is actually working on a new cut) we'll see a bit more development in the character as they do make a truce at the end of that cut.
In the original ending Rocky was supposed to die, I don't know if they actually filmed that but when Stallone wrote this he was in a bad place in his life. Rocky Jr is played by his son Sage Stallone who ended up killing himself years later. He didn't return in the next film or Creed 2 because of Union reasons.
This was the first Rocky film I saw in theaters and the theater was going nuts. I'm glad to see reaction TH-camrs who are watching this and actually liking it because it gets a bad rap.

@@arcticangel1628 The press did point out that Rocky was being trained by Apollo, but at that point no one saw Rocky fighting in a new style, so they only saw him fight in the style Mickey taught him.
During Rocky's match with Clubber Lang they do point out how Rocky was fighting slightly different but Rocky never truly adopted a new style. Tommy actually changed his style to be like Rocky, not his own. Plus Tommy never won the belt from Rocky. He won it from Kane, who won a new belt made after Rocky retired. That's why they called him a paper champion. Kane was a champion based on paper not an official win

Rocky has 10 setup fights because of Mickey to defend his title ever since he became champion. He didn’t even look like he had a hard time beating them. Clubber Lang knew it too. The press couldn’t call Rocky out for that?
@@arcticangel1628 Rocky adapted his style with Apollo's, creating his own new style. Tommy just used Rocky's style. That's the main difference, Tommy never used his own. On top of that the title Tommy won didn't have the same legacy as the title Rocky won.

Clubber Lang and Ivan Drago are both defeated, Apollo Creed is dead, and Rocky was no longer boxing. Who else could have been there to fight Tommy as a real opponent before his fight with Rocky happened? No it’s not Rocky’s own style. He used Apollo’s style as his own with the southpaw. That’s using someone else’s just like Rocky. And Adonis learned the same styles of Rocky and Apollo during his training as his own. So why didn’t he also get called out for that?

I was also that way when I first saw this film and that was in the theaters in 1990. That's unforgettable because it was on my birthday. I even remember that I was the only female inside and I couldn't help but react loudly, just like what you did. Everyone was looking and laughing at me when I went out the theater for the way I reacted. I'm a Rocky fan... I couldn't help it! 😂 I like Rocky V and it's not even my least favorite. Sylvester Stallone is such a great Hero / villain picker because George Washington Duke is the biggest villain in this entire franchise. Rocky really loved Tommy but he was beating on Duke during that whole fight scene. Adrian's always right❤

You would’ve love watching this in the theatre, at the time, everyone was going bonkers during the fight.
I love the Rocky films as much as the next guy.
But this one was very decisive and everybody knows why.
Even if this was considered the weakest sequel, there was tolerable levels.
The street fight left people kinda cold.
Many felt Rocky & Tommy should've fought in the ring.
Big surprise is that in the original script, Rocky was going to die after beating Tommy.
At the end of the day, this was about Rocky's family going back to their original roots.
Reclaming one's manhood and showing the utmost respect is what matters.
Being rich or poor happens to everyone, anywhere. Going from rags to riches is never easy.
But to stay strong, persevere and keep your heart means everything.
Burgess Meredith (Mickey), Sly's firstborn child/only son-Sage Stallone (Rocky Jr.), Tony Burton (Duke Evers), real-life boxer Tommy Morrison (Tommy Gunn) and director of Rocky V, John G. Avildsen (oscar-winner of the 1976 original) have all passed away.
Rocky describing himself as "not a commercial type of guy" clearly made no sense. The line contradicts Rocky's product endorsements visualized in the opening montage of Rocky III - cars, credit card, food and many others. More than that, within this 1990 film, Rocky could have used his high status to reach out to companies for a new line of endorsements or reached out to Hollywood to appear in movies or TV all for the sake of financially supporting his family at a time when he was diagnosed with brain damage (and being unable to fight). Instead, we see Rocky just letting his family down financially.
He was doing this to get a new life out of his Philadelphia neighborhood. Not for his name to be out there.

To see for a long time Rocky failing to give his own son attention while he focuses more on Tommy Gunn is arguably the main reason Rocky V turned out disappointing. You cannot help except be angry or frustrated with Rocky for a long period of time until he finally comes to his senses (after realizing his son's rebellion and Tommy Gun leaving him for George Washington Duke).
I think those instances where Rocky put Tommy before Jr. were basically times when Jr. was interrupting Rocky in the middle of something else. Hey, sometimes Dad's busy and he'll get back to you later. Rocky never shined him on. He would tell the kid that he was already in the middle of something else, and my feeling was that Rocky wanted to be able to give Jr. his full attention when the time was right, just not at THAT time. Think about everything going on with Rocky at that time. "Hey, Dad, I met a girl" is not top of the list.

Rocky Junior is played by Sage Stallone, Stallone's real life son. Unfortunately he died of natural causes at a young age. Tommy Morrison (Tommy Gunn) also died of complications from Aids. So, the film had its share of bad luck. This was meant to be the final Rocky film, but many weren't satisfied with that including Stallone. The next film "Rocky Balboa" is better IMO. Everybody telling Rocky to wake up Rocky was five miles ahead of everyone else when it came to the situation between Tommy and Duke. Rocky just wanted to get Tommy to a position where he could actually have a career in boxing, and Rocky wanted that career also even if it just meant being a trainer and a manager. Rocky isn't naive, especially by the time we get to this movie. He's just a genuinely good guy who sees the potential in people.
