Yeah, that's about what I got from this too. What the heck was he talking about? I've watched Bloodsport like 100 times. It's one of my all time favorite movies, and many other Van Damme movies. I feel more confused at the end of the video than I was before. I just need him to kick something and say "Aaaaaaaahhhhhhhhhhhh!!!!!!!!!"
Same here, I’ll never get tired of watching Bloodsport 💯 It always takes me back to when I was young in the 90’s. If that movie was on, instead of playing outside with my friends, I would sit and watch that entire movie even though I’ve watched it multiple times
It's difficult to follow. Van Damme was upset by how "Bloodsport" was edited (2:01). There were too many cuts during his fights. He was in tears (2:24). So he went into the office of an executive who had told him that he'd never be a star (2:45) and told the executive that he was wrong (2:50).
I agree and I’ll tell you bottom line a great guy but I remember watching MTV special where he talked about how much he loved his wife and kids and as soon as the camera was off he was in a limo with four girls well at least 19 years old and that was very funny talk about no loyalty to the wife
Okay, so since I know a thing or two about his story (Loosely) this is how I will try and translate. "So When I was young I was in great shape in Belgium and had my own Gym and I was a Karate Champion who had it all, the women, the fame and the money. I went to the US, left all that behind to try and make it. I was so poor in trying to be an actor in the US that in order to make a long distance call to my family, I would wait for the women I randomly hooked up with to go have a shower so I can charge the long distance fee to her phone. Then because of my martial arts I got involved with Chuck Norris and started to spar with him and he would practice his moves he would use in the movies on me, so when I went home for a visit I was referred to as Chuck Norris's punching bag and a failure at trying to be an actor and my father was ashamed of what I had given up to NOT become. The I saw the head of Canon Studio (He got his accent down perfectly I should ad) and he told me I will never be a star like Chuck and Michael (The dude from American Ninja) and so we got into a heated exchange where I said I ain't no bodies bitch, so he tried to calm me down and gave me a script called Bloodsport to which no one had faith in and I did some better more realistic things when I made that film but it got chopped down in the editing to be more hokey. So my charisma still shown through and that is how I became a star and not an actor." Hope that cleared things up a little.
LOL 😂 I literally laughed my asss off on this one. What’s your name again? I give you everything I love you guys. Lol I guess it’s easy to win vandamme over
When I get shampoo in my eyes and it stings, I do the Van Damne , yell, "NAAAAHHHHH!!!", and do some martial arts moves, totally blind. Thank you Jean Claude for that. 👍😉
JCVD the movie is criminally overlooked even by Van Damme fans. His acting in that film was incredible, that monologue at the end was one of the few times a movie has made me cry, maybe its because I followed his career as a kid & had preconceived notions about what kind of guy he was & they were wrong because his speech was so powerful & raw it felt too real
Not really, Van Damme fans know about it, but even renowned actors like Nicholas Cage spoke about it, which is how I found out about it. But that was the thing with it. Where it took awhile for even fans of his to know about it, because there was so little publicity for it, it was a french made film. But it basically gave the whole industry evidence that he was a real actor. (Richard Corliss of Time magazine named Van Damme's performance in the film the second best of the year (after Heath Ledger's The Joker in The Dark Knight),[9] having previously stated that Van Damme "deserves not a black belt, but an Oscar")
I think its one of his worst movie ever.he just played himself and talked about his life and did like 5 seconds of fighting.I think his best movies are the quest, knock off, hard target,no retreat no surrender, the replicant, double team, lion heart,Inferno, kickboxer and welcome to the jungle.

One of my childhood heroes. I loved his comment stating that UFC fighters today can't kick like him in his prime. He admitted he wouldn't be able to grapple or wrestle, but his stand up would be strong in today's UFC because his kicks would be the best. I love this man.
what he was saying was.. van damme had a successful gym in Belgium. he left it all to go to america and become a movie star. it was hard to get even the smallest part in a movie. he was training with chuck norris. people in belgium joked that he gave up everything to become chuck norris' punching bag. van dammes dad felt embarrassed. then the film producer Menahem Golan gave a desperate young van damme some milk and cookies and the script to Bloodsport. then he became the muscles from brussels. yay.
I first saw him in the movie (VHS) 'No Retreat, No Surrender' way back in the mid 1980's and was completely blown away with his kicking style and technique. As a person, he has always come across as a congruent and decent kind of guy.

Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Cyborg, Lion Heart, Double Impact, Universal Soldier, Nowhere to Run, Hard Target, Time Cop and even Street Fighter. The man was a true action STAR.
Van Damme will always have the best kicks in Hollywood history. His helicopter kicks were and still are legendary, no one like him in Hollywood ever again. A living legend, love him and grew up watching all his movies, I'm a JCVD superfan.
I love hearing about his life. Like with Arnie and Stallone, his struggles are very human and real. He comes from humble beginnings. He isn't a manufactured star or actor like we see today - he is the real thing.
Bloodsport, Kickboxer, Cyborg, Death Warrant, Lion Heart, Universal Soldier, Hard Target, Double Impact and Time Cop where my shit back in the day. I watched those over and over.
What a great guy, literally he is a great guy. Back in 1995 I met him in person at Planet Hollywood Atlanta promoting Sudden Death. Among getting two autographs from him he made my late grandmother very happy with his kindness. I'll always remember that and I will always respect him. Yes he had a cocaine habit that's no secret but I commend him for kicking the habit and becoming a better human being after learning from his mistakes.
When i was 12 and watched kickboxer, i started going to kickbox lessons and did a split a month after i started :) that movie was so much inspriation for the young generation.
"Which one you want to be a star or an actor?" Then goes on a babbling rant about what he did to star in Bloodsport 1 and 2 but didn't answer his own question or the one given by the interviewer but he's still a living Movie Action icon.
The devil chooses who will be a star. He watches people who are desperate and will do anything ...lie, fornicate, steal, live like a bum. And once he feels you have no love of righteousness and he can use you to influence the young ... then he will grant you fame and fortune. Which you will lose after a short time.
One of the best actor and entertainers in the 80s and 90s when movies were movies 🎥! Thanks a lot for the action Van Damme! Bloodsport my all time favourite!
The whole interview was fun. It made me smile the whole time I was listening to it. You have to have him on again especially knowing now that you'll only be able to ask him only a few questions but will get a lot of content from him. Did anyone else go watch Bloodsport when they got home in honour of this interview?
I love JCVD! He was a hero of mine growing up. His movies changed my life after watching them. Kickboxer, bloodsport, lionheart, double impact, universal solider, death warrant, no where to run, hard target, etc
I like how he’s come back finally over the last several years. It’s too bad ego and drugs got in his way for so many years but his career has been pretty good and the movies he’s done good too over the last ten or so.
After Bruce Lee, to me, came Jean-Claude Van Damme because "No Surrender, No Retreat" stunned me as the next best martial art movie since Bruce Lee. I've also learned by at least two people I know who met him, and they said he was down to earth, and pleasant to meet.
As Sylvester Stallone said to Arnold: "You and I are the reason subtitles were invented." He should add John Clawed Van Damme to it! Respect though, everyone's childhood hero, including mine.
Met him twice, one on one. Very humble, polite, overall just such a nice guy. I used to do valet parking (nice way to meet lots of entertainment ppl). JCV was like a kid, happy and excited! He'd shake hands, make an exciting conversation, make you feel he was your friend! I'm glad I've met him, had my chance to see for myself how he is in person 👍👍
I consider JC a really talented actor. That's why I was so obsessed with him and still feel all the feels when I watch his films now. Yeah he's hot and can kick ass, but the types of scripts and stories he did and his commitment to it being good...He really brings depth and interest to otherwise cliche material. I think the Hollywood machine wanted him to just be eye candy and do what he was told and when he wasn't, they discarded him. He deserves way better. He's got heart and charisma and still making films, despite the haters. It sucks people talk shit about him more than respect what he inspired-and continues to-in so many. He is quite a few levels of talent, people just wanted him to be one note. He will always have a special place for me. Even if his story rambled for time. 💗✨
Understood all of it but then again I listen to every Jean-Claude Van Damme interview in the world. Basically to get the role he he did his spin kick and did the splits right in front of his desk and after that the guy said bring me the script Bloodsport and boom. And what he was trying to say about the script was the script was a rip off Bruce Lee's Enter the Dragon. That's why It had Bolo in it. And the famous lines brick don't hit back. Bolo was the reason the movie got eyes on it cuz he was in Bruce Lee's movie. And then when the movie was finished they played it for the studios and they said it was crap. Van dame recut the moive his self took like 3 months. And when the studio seen it they decide to release in Select theaters after it was apparent it was a hit they put it out in America and soon as it reach Europe ge was a star and only got paid like a hundred and fifty thousand for like for movies
I think you missed it. Van Damme was literally down on his luck, stealing food to survive, in that meeting he was likely on his knees begging for a chance, which is why the producer told him to sit and then asked if he wanted cookies and milk. That's what Van Damme meant with "Too strong"
@@dragonballsuper1519 naw I got it pretty good. Trust . The milk and cookies is something I didn't even speak on ...but he offered that to him because he was fin 2 fucking cry. But you don't got to believe me you can dig through interviews like I did and find out yourself. But most of his in-depth interviews are in French. So happy trails
@@dragonballsuper1519 the picture you see on my profile comes from Venice Beach in LA in 1985-6 i was working at the Restaurant in Beverly Hills when i first met Jean-Claude with Michel Qissi (Mohammad) i remember seen Jean-Claude hitting a parking meter with he's fist so that the metes give out free parking time. one of the night he had a rental Mercedes car to show off to a producer at the restaurant, in that time he was driving a small green pick-up Nissan. i have more story about him.
I've always admired Jean Claude Van Damme. This guy is a LEGEND. I watched him growing up as a kid and would try to emulate his moves until I got into boxing and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu.
Favorite Van Damn movie is No Retreat, No Surrender. When he breaks that Tae Kwon Dos teachers knee in the beginning. The face that guy makes, when Jean Claude, is doing the breaking, is comedy gold.🤣😂
@Keaos0 really, it's a really good reaction. Even him limping through the rest of the film looked authentic. Hugh!! Who knew Jean Claude broke his leg. LMAO 😂🤣
Great story, from an odd/different, but honest man, who has obviously been through a whole lot of things and is somehow still with us today. Glad he was on the show, and good for him.
He tried his best to explain his story about this in English. Considering his accent and the difference of translation and how French is used I got it pretty good. Once you study languages, it really breaks down order and allows for flexibility on flow and priority of matter expressed.
I have no idea what he's saying here but I could listen to JCVD all day. One of the very few genuine good guys. Great to his fans. Humble. I had the Bloodsport poster on my wall forever. 💪❤
Wow, incredibly inspiring story. Spent much of my teen years also as a chubby kid enamored of Jean watching all of his movies and aspiring toward something more because of his performance. Quite a thing now to get the backdrop of his true story during those years, directly from him. Seems like a humble man, and wise too. Would just be a dream come true to hang with him just for a few hours and listen.
I actually got to meet him on a film set in North Carolina when he filmed Time Cop, and my father interviewed him for a radio show. He made quite an impression on me as a boy, and it has been fun to watch his career ever since.
When I was a kid as well I loved him so much! I practice all the moves from the films. They were over 18 films but they were the best films for a 12 year old.
You would think this guy is a genuine Italian with all those hand gestures? Lol Very animated man!! But I wouldn't change him for the world. One of my childhood Heroes 👍👍
My favorite scene in Bloodsport, is when there is a montage of fights with music. The particular moment is when one of the fighters jumps in slow motion and does an inside crescent kick to his opponent's face, and the guy who gets hits turns the wrong way! It's so funny cause it's a total error and it's in slow mo. "Who cares if Bruce Springsteen is his Shidoshi?"
My mom worked with him on the set of hard target in New Orleans Louisiana. Me being a kid loving him I wanted to meet him so bad and when I asked my mom she said she asked him and he was the biggest asshole on earth about wanting to meet a kid. Almost acted like he was to good for a kid to even be speaking to him...lmmfao that’s my memory of him... here’s a bettter story of a mega star my uncle is Patrick Swayze and I was in the movies fatherhood with him nothing but a extra but he stayed at our house road in our car and became my uncle after that. I’ll never forget he told me I’ll never forget your name he said that to me the first time I ever met him. And I felt like hot shit saying Patrick swayze will never forget my name. Wasn’t until I got older I realized his brothers name is Kyle as well...lmmfao I thought that was the coolest thing. Uncle Patrick stayed in touch and visited all through my life all the way up until he died. Rip UNK PAT
So Swayze wasn’t your uncle at all. He was just someone you met and spent time with and got to know. In order to be your uncle he needs to be a) your parent’s sibling or married to one of Swayze’s or his wife’s siblings. He wasn’t your uncle and he didn’t have a brother named Kyle either. His two brothers were Don and Sean. You’re full of shit.
Victor: I'm Lin. You Jackson? You look like a Jackson. That must make you Frank Ducks. Frank Dux: No, it's DUX. Victor: Oh, right, like put up your dukes
To this day, my two favourite action movies are Bloodsport and Rambo II. Whenever they are on, I will stop what I'm doing and watch them. Seen them over 1,000 times each. Van Damme and Stallone were my childhood heroes.
He says this is exclusive... I heard this story 10 years ago.... he's repeated this story more than anything else.... and he never answered your question, just same story about how he got bloodsport
I think some details like the long distance calls from some broad's phone or stealing food...was what he meant as in never told that before. I don't recall hearing those details.
Bloodsport, kick boxer, and double impact are my favorite John Clark Van Dan movies...he was one is the biggest stars in the 80s.... every kid wanted to be like him ..

"Which one you want to be a star or an actor?" Then goes on a babbling rant about what he did to star in Bloodsport 1 and 2 but didn't answer his own question or the one given by the interviewer but he's still a living Movie Action icon.

Bloodsport will always be my favorite Van Damme film...good story and bloody action

I remember as a kid, watching his movies every time they were on TV. They were the best. Now at 35yrs old, I still love them.
His advice was in a story form. He was told he wasnt going to be a star amd struggled until he became one. Just keep trying is his advice.
I think the most important part was recognizing the difference between an actor and a star
The devil chooses who will be a star. He watches people who are desperate and will do anything ...lie, fornicate, steal, live like a bum. And once he feels you have no love of righteousness and he can use you to influence the young ... then he will grant you fame and fortune. Which you will lose after a short time.

I couldn't make heads or tails of it, myself
The moral of the story: Follow your dreams and never give up!
I grew up watching him. There is always a special place in my heart for Van Damme.
"I love you guys.. So I give you everything" What a story teller
One of the best actor and entertainers in the 80s and 90s when movies were movies 🎥!
Thanks a lot for the action Van Damme!
Bloodsport my all time favourite!
Even his story telling is legendary. I don’t have a damn clue what he’s talking about , but still a legend lol
No retreat no surrender
As Sylvester Stallone said to Arnold: "You and I are the reason subtitles were invented." He should add John Clawed Van Damme to it! Respect though, everyone's childhood hero, including mine.
Met him twice, one on one. Very humble, polite, overall just such a nice guy. I used to do valet parking (nice way to meet lots of entertainment ppl). JCV was like a kid, happy and excited! He'd shake hands, make an exciting conversation, make you feel he was your friend! I'm glad I've met him, had my chance to see for myself how he is in person 👍👍
Van damme is actually a cool n relaxing guy.. getting hurt for almost 30yrs .., gotta salute this guy
Bolo Young once said that Bruce Lee and Jean claude Van Damme were the best martial artists that he met in his entire life.
Thanks for that translation
@@dragonballsuper1519 the picture you see on my profile comes from Venice Beach in LA in 1985-6 i was working at the Restaurant in Beverly Hills when i first met Jean-Claude with Michel Qissi (Mohammad) i remember seen Jean-Claude hitting a parking meter with he's fist so that the metes give out free parking time. one of the night he had a rental Mercedes car to show off to a producer at the restaurant, in that time he was driving a small green pick-up Nissan. i have more story about him.

his a star, he turns uninteresting events or situations (questions) to a van damme fable.
LMAO 😂🤣
I like a few of JCVD's films but "No Retreat, No Surrender" is the only movie where he actually looked competent as a fighter. Maybe "Replicant".
Slightly confused but super friendly.
I like him.
i can just set and listen to this great guy forever, love JCVD
Long story short..all it takes to be a star is just to drink your milk and eat your cookies.
Fun fact: Cyborg is not a movie it's a documentary.
My only regret is that I have but a single “like” to give your comment. You’re doing gods work.
Interesting

Gotta love this man...so honest!
I met him when he filmed universal soldier in camp verde AZ he was so nice and amazing
I like the way he answers... I get what he is trying to say. The answer is you got to be ready for the struggle if you really want it.
The guy and his early films were my biggest inspirations to be "the best I can be!" Still working at it.
Humble man
The man, the myth, the legend.
I will always love JCVD.
I have no idea what he's saying here but I could listen to JCVD all day. One of the very few genuine good guys. Great to his fans. Humble. I had the Bloodsport poster on my wall forever. 💪❤
JCVD's thick Belgian accent / massive ego combination has always been charming. The same with the Austrian Oak.
I’ve always been a Van Damne fan and I’ll will. Great job!
Van damme was the dude all the guys wanted to be back in the day. This man is going to be remembered long past his time.
I always hear he is super nice guy in real life, he loves his fans!
Imagine smoking a joint with this man. *hits blunt Bro. The universe is like bread love it like cheese in China for the economy

Snyder Van Damme cut?
My favorite scene in Bloodsport, is when there is a montage of fights with music. The particular moment is when one of the fighters jumps in slow motion and does an inside crescent kick to his opponent's face, and the guy who gets hits turns the wrong way! It's so funny cause it's a total error and it's in slow mo.
"Who cares if Bruce Springsteen is his Shidoshi?"
I thought I was the only one who ever caught that....😂😂😂that erks my last pinky toe nerve every time I watch him go the wrong way after the kick!
YOU DON'T LOOK LIKE A TANAKA...

Its actually: what's the difference if Bruce Springsteen is his shidoshi.
I also remember it as what's the difference..
Maybe Mandela effect
He was always my favorite as a kid... Over Arnold, Chuck, Sly, and Chan.
Love that dude..such a genuine person.
No Retreat, No Surrender was one of my favourite movies growing up. Van Damme was badass af

Huge JCVD fan. Love his movies.
Honest tho right ? Lol
I'd rather hear him say this entire story 10 years ago so I'll have a better understanding in what he's saying.
