This was very informative. I have a Lariat Ecoboost on the way so it's great to know that it can average 30 mpg in actual regular driving, not fluffed up EPA driving. That's what my Honda Civic 1.5T got a couple of years ago. So the fact that a small pickup truck with AWD can achieve mpgs from what a compact sedan with FWD can is astounding. And the Hybrid just blows all of them out of the water! Good job Ford!
@@CJDiecast On the highway, 1.5T gets over 40. Even the Si gets 40. This YT channel has mpg tests with civic 1.5T that confirms 40+ mpg hwy. 30mpg that's in the city.
@Kalvin Thomas The only thing that makes the ford quicker is its all wheel drive launch. For regular daily driving, the civic is certainly much more punchy. And, it can turn!
That seems really good for a 2.0 eco boost AWD. What many people don't understand about the hybrid power train is that it really shines in city driving vs highway cruising where you don't get all of the benefit of the battery power. That said I think I would go with the 2.0 Eco Boost AWD .
I've got the 2.0 AWD and I do get between 32 (worst) to 38 (best, on highway) mpg, but doing so is quite hard due to the Maverick's tendency to "keep revs" when coasting. For normal non-mindful driving it's more around 28 mpg but you can extend the range to extraordinary distance by rarely using the brakes, going 65 mph on the highway, and not using cruise control. The hybrid does all that for you except the 65 mph.
I like your highway MPG testing method, and that you test many vehicles so there is a good database for comparison. Yesterday's posting of the hybrid Maverick was an eye opener, especially if you do mostly highway driving and live in a colder climate. The extra power and 4x4 in the turbo could be the better option for many folks. A test driving both trucks around the streets of Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti would be an interesting comparison for those of us that do more stop and go driving.
Really solid video man. I was looking for so long info on how the FX4 and 4K Tow would affect the mpg. All my driving is highway so 30 mpg on a truck is crazy to think.
I was amused at the comment you made as you were getting onto the highway at the start of your test drive. You said the drive would simulate an actual long journey people would take in their car. Maybe where you live. Where we live in Texas, it's over 100 miles - one way - to Sam's Club.
I recently ordered the XLT with AWD. Coming from my current 33.7 mpg Focus it makes me feel a lot better about the purchase seeing you get 29.9 mpg on highway. With the bigger gas tank I should be able to go farther in the Maverick than my Focus before needing to refuel.
@@ChrisVZ77 I ordered the Maverick in mid-January, but I never got beyond the factory accepting my order in the process. Hot air is less dense than cold air which means there's a less concentration of oxygen to combine with the fuel hot air means less fuel efficiency. That is mythology that hot air improves power and efficiency it's not true at all. Respectable mpg. Awd is front default with rear kicking in when need be. I think it's easier to get higher numbers than if they had done it the other way round. Nice truck
Worse due to parasitic loss. Fwd layouts actually are way more efficient, even when the engines aren't sideways. Subarus have been doing it forever. The manuals are 50/50 split and get WORSE mileage. The autos have a center clutch kindof where the front output shaft is for the drive shaft. They usually run mainly fwd too and get 28mpg AVERAGE all day long that's with CITY/HWY mix. The manuals w 50/50 get about 24 lmao. I miss that fwd bias every time I hit the gas pump.
@@ShogunAutoworks Cool. These are also FWD. AWD only kicks in under computer control, otherwise not coupled. I drive a Subaru from time to time. 2014 Impreza. Nice car, also great mileage.
Well you earned a new subscriber with me well done! Do you have another video where you’re comparing them directly? I’m really struggling trying to decide which one to get I have two other four-wheel-drive vehicles for my business reason I want this is solely for MPG’s and putting less mileage on my three-quarter ton truck for my small lawn care and window cleaning business.
Thank you! I completely recommend the hybrid, then. If this were your only truck, then the 2.0. We do have a comparison video coming out on Sunday morning.
wow usually ecoboosts can't get up to their rated mpg. I've owned 2 and neither of them got their rated highway mpg no natter how I drove it. both were rated 34 highway and the best I ever got on the highway was 28. impressive to see one actually get what its rated at
@@1986subway Yep, i've seen the tests ands its good to know that they do let in a lot more of the crap but just gotta change the oil in the engine and in the filter at recommended intervals. Used them for 30 years for hundreds of thousands of miles with no problems and im sure lots of others have as well. They dont void warranty either, and there is no evidence they cause premature failure, just that they can make the engine lubricants dirty quicker, so only negligence of regular maintanance will cause failure.
Definitely! It’s pretty simple tech: a 2.0-liter turbo that Ford uses in many products, so it’s a known quantity. 8 speed automatic that is also pretty proven. Even the hybrid is pretty straightforward and proven in other models. I think a lot of people would enjoy the Maverick. It’s affordable, practical, and cool. Can’t ask for much more!
Can you do a side by side drag race to 70 mph with both trucks? That would be interesting. Also, do you fill up until you see the fuel at the gas filler rim, or stop at the first click? Accuracy would be at the filler rim level.
We meant to, but we ran out of time :/ we did do a roll race from 40 and they were surprisingly close. That'll be in our comparison video coming up. We use the three-click method, which allows bubbles to settle twice.
Cruising at 55-60 I have gotten as high as 37MPG on my ecoboost. But thats the speed limit in my state, good to know what the MPG is at higher speeds. EDIT: Mine is the FWD only model, which will have an impact too.
I've seen 35.8 MPG on my avg mpg readout. Even accounting for possible error (Avg mpg usually has a 1-2 mpg error), I'm still getting an easy 32-33 mpg hwy in my XLT AWD ecoboost. That is without using cruise control and cruising at 65-70 mph. I have a hard tri-fold bed cover which probably helps fuel efficiency also.
It will do really well until the valves get covered in carbon. I have a maverick on order but I'll be putting a catch can on it for sure. My focus went from 6.9l/100km city and 5.6l/100 km highway to 7.5 and 6.8 respectively. I need to clean my valve and it should do a bit better. I think because the mavericks a turbo it will either need a catch can or the valves cleaned regularly.
Wow that's 5MPG better then my Ecoboost mustang premuim! Maybe it's because it uses a smaller displament? But yeah trading .3 liter for .0liter and 5MPG may be a good choice.
Is this in normal mode? Any idea what the 2.0L ecoboost gets in eco mode vs normal mode? Considering fx4 package but not sure how much MPG id lose not having eco for long trips
I doubt it affects highway mpg as the truck was in 8th gear the entire time anyway. The 4k tow gearing and/or FX4 tires are more likely to affect highway mpg
Eco mode has little/no effect on highway driving. It basically adjusts shift points and maybe some fuel flow restriction on acceleration, neither of which do anything when you are cruising in OD on the highway.

495 miles to empty. One would need to drive less or get stuck on the road, but that is at 70 mph. If one drove a little slower, say 65 mph, then over 500 is possible between fill ups.

@@KF1 be glad it's that way trust me lol.
What re the weight of the truck? Fuel, driver total weight matters with mpg.
Mpg on city?
The range on your ecoboost test was 495 miles. 30 x 16.5
What Ford color is the blue/grey one?
Well you earned a new subscriber with me well done! Do you have another video where you’re comparing them directly? I’m really struggling trying to decide which one to get I have two other four-wheel-drive vehicles for my business reason I want this is solely for MPG’s and putting less mileage on my three-quarter ton truck for my small lawn care and window cleaning business.
Thank you! I completely recommend the hybrid, then. If this were your only truck, then the 2.0. We do have a comparison video coming out on Sunday morning.
Had for one week with hybrid XL… 42MPG so far
I want that yellow one
Think about of repeating test using high test fuel
wow usually ecoboosts can't get up to their rated mpg. I've owned 2 and neither of them got their rated highway mpg no natter how I drove it. both were rated 34 highway and the best I ever got on the highway was 28. impressive to see one actually get what its rated at
Is this hybrid ?
Hi! In the 2.0. ecoboost,, does the Eco mode (if you have it) make the gears shift earlier, at lower rpm's? Thanks!
In some situations, yes
Slap a K&N on it, Racechip tuner, street tires and a tonneau and you will be at 32-33 hwy.
Look up some particulate tests on the k&n. They are a great way to end an engine prematurely
Who would you recommend this truck for? Does it seem like a reliable vehicle?
So is the hybrid or the ecoboost the way to go for highway commuting?
Pretty comparable. Hybrid will always be a little better given it's running the Atkinson cycle.
Is there a calculation for the hybrid model that you were trailing?
th-cam.com/video/xQIxqu6vZgE/w-d-xo.html
Hi, did you use regular or premium on this?
Thanks
Regular
I think both of these trucks fit the bill for needs of people that don't need a full size truck.
Those tires are really lacking . Those Pirelli scorpions are dangerous in rain and snow conditions.
This looks compelling.
It is. We love it.
Impressive.
What's a catch can and is it easy to install yourself ?
Do the same test with all city driving.
Were both trucks using regular gas?
Yes
Does the maverick come with cruise control??????
XLT and up I believe
Tyler, I have the Lariat AWD with Lux and FX4, and get anywhere between 29 and 32 mpg depending on my speed.
Hey Charlie. Is that a check engine light on the dash? What is the story behind that?
At what point in the video?
@@DailyMotor when you where calculating mpg and talking about it.
@@DabooUa CEL indicator is on when engine is off and ignition is on to verify CEL light is working (bulb not burnt out). I think this is standard operation for all vehicles and has been like this for decades.
@@jeffhynes6503 Jeff Hynes you are correct sir. I was watching the video on my phone so it was hard to see is engine was running or not.
I have the Lariat AWD 2.0 with everything.
I get on average combined 27mpg
And on cruise control at 75mph on the highway I get 33mpg …
I only put 91 octane and it runs great 👍🏽
Any concerns with running 87 or 89 octane ?
I get 19 driving only city with awd 2.0T
495 miles to empty. One would need to drive less or get stuck on the road, but that is at 70 mph. If one drove a little slower, say 65 mph, then over 500 is possible between fill ups.
I get 12mpg in my 05 hemi ram.
You cant even find a maverick below msrp even used ones that some crazy shit!
Wow that is cool. WTG Ford
What would be hilarious if the maverick would be the "truck" to take the title from the f150 sales leader
never ever ever ever happen. You know they say never say never? Well never. NEVER! The Maverick is looking like a wonderful "lifestyle" truck. It is ABSOLUTELY NOT a workhorse. It's basically a car with a pickup bed. It will never be the jobsite, hauling trailers, work vehicle that the blue collar professional needs. It is what it is and its great at that, and has been a missing market segment for a long time. Well done Ford.
@@dlloyd6300 I wasn't implying it would be the workhorse job site trailer hauler I was referring to the the average joe getting one of these you know carolla, foucus ,civic, jetta, sentra type people besides I dont think ford would ever let that happen f150 is their bread and butter
@@willie9397 I gotcha. You aren't talking about the Maverick stealing F-150 sales, but stealing "Civic" sales. Honestly I think it will be a mix of both, but I still don't think that it would even break 10% of F-150 sales. I'm one of the "Civic" sales. My wife has a Hyundai Elantra that she has a 3 hour one way commute to work. She would like something higher off the road, that also needs to have good gas mileage, and is inexpensive. This thing ticks all of those boxes. I just don't think there are enough of "Me" to dethrone the F-150 any time soon.
And I bet the FWD 2.0 non-hybrid maverick gets even better MPG
What mode were you in.
Normal.
@@DailyMotor would eco mode have done any better at 70 mph
@@leedobbyn1602 The FX4 package swaps Eco and Sport modes for Mud/Ruts and Sand :/ but it likely wouldn't have made much of a difference. The truck was almost exclusively in 8th gear.
@@leedobbyn1602 Eco mode has little/no effect on highway driving. It basically adjusts shift points and maybe some fuel flow restriction on acceleration, neither of which do anything when you are cruising in OD on the highway.
Too bad they didn’t find a way to marry the AWD eco boost to the hybrid. That would make for a great truck.
Dang bro, I feel like you not letting us know what he got in the hybrid for his trip at the same time was a big let down at the end...
How fast did y'all drive?
Wow you watched the video and you don't know how fast they were driving. Please don't get behind a wheel if your that unobservant as I don't want you to kill someone.
They verbally said between 70&72 MPH and they had it visually posted on a cellphone in the video.
@@fredted1611 ya i was skipping a bit while watching. My bad.
light vehicles with modern small engines fuel efficient ..who knew
I would like to see you do 65mph. I bet it would be even better.
It would do even better at 55.
@@DailyMotorI bet. Where I live the speed limit is 65.
Haha you passed by my town :)
I checked the mileage on my 2024 Maverick XL Ecoboost for the first 1,000 miles. Checking it manually, it got 28.2 mpg. The computer was saying 30.3 mpg. It seems the computer is a little too optimistic. I don't think your test included enough miles to be accurate. Also, you need to include both highway and city driving. I really like the Maverick. It rides and handles very good.
You should have done a mix instead of highway only, would be more realistic. The hybrid while having the EPA rating for highway couldn't take advantage of what the hybrid engine was made for.
I have a 2002 ford explorer sport trac with a 5 liter swap i did. I get 15 average mpg 😆 .... With that dumb potato in office i might go buy one of these
Isn't that substitute Topher 😂
If hybrid one can drive only 33 mpg and this can drive 30 mpg what’s a point to buy hybrid😂
1000 dollar savings right off the bat and probably more than 10 mpg difference if one mixes in some stop and go driving.
For me I’m all highway so I agree BUT if you’re a pizza delivery driver or something. The hybrid is perfect.
Right...but Ford wins NO "awards" for producing them and delivering them -- on time. Just like they screwed-up on the Broncos. An terrible, poorly-managed company...

30 miles per gallon on highway?
what the hell, its not hybrid, cant be.
it does two times worse than these cars
1. Hyundai Ioniq: 58/60/59 mpg
2. Toyota Prius: 58/53/56 mpg
3. Hyundai Elantra Hybrid: 53/56/54 mpg
4. Honda Insight: 55/49/52 mpg
5. Toyota Corolla Hybrid: 53/52/52 mpg
You're right, it isn't the hybrid. Hybrid got 33.
30 miles per gallon on highway, and its hybrid? what the hell
i was expecting 45 or even 50 miles per gallon
its hybrid but its worse than these 2022 gas only cars
1. Mitsubishi Mirage: 36/43/39 city/highway/combined mpg
2. Hyundai Elantra: 33/43/37 mpg
3. Hyundai Accent, Kia Rio: 33/41/36 mpg
4. Honda Civic: 32/42/36 mpg
5. Toyota Corolla Hatchback: 32/41/35 mpg
This is ridiculous! 30 mpg? This is 2022! The mpg should be 50 mpg at least! Ford you're a sob!
