    I bought the FWD 2.0 because it was literally all I could find after calling around to a couple dozen dealers in Atlanta. I love it. It’s exactly what I needed and didn’t break the bank. Engine is really responsive and I’m getting around 28 mpg on the highway. Couldn’t be happier with it.

    Those are all good points for people who need to be able to tow or need or want all-wheel drive. I’ll stick with my hybrid. I live in a large city and getting 46 mpg on my daily commute beats out all other considerations for me. Plus, I still have a 3/4 ton payload capacity for hauling stuff, which I do. That’s the same payload capacity that my 2011 Silverado had, but I literally get 3x the mpg.

      I have a 2022 XL hybrid and do a lot of hauling. It handles fine with light 500-1200lb loads. Milage goes down to mid 30s on highway. I load it up most weekends going to garage sales and never have a handling or power problem. Usually 1/3 to 1/2 battery power so low to mid 50s mpg. Over 3 times what I'd get in my Ram. Lower tailgate height so easier to load large items too. With handtruck I can load stoves, Washers, driers, AC condenser units by myself.

    Good review and not saying I agree or disagree but its a matter of what works for an individual. WIth Ford only making a Mustang if someone is looking for a daily driver with great MPH the Hybrid is the way to go, if your gonna tow and need the extra oomph then upgrade engine the way to go. Me personally the Hybrid would work best for me as I am not towing anything and the off road package does nothing for me as I dont off road. Its nice to see that with the Maverick their are plenty of options to fit one's need. Good video!

    I love the conciseness, clarity, and stage presence! Thanks for this breakdown. Back in the summer I was absolutely obsessed with getting a Maverick, and didn't get to see the advantages till now. Nice job breaking it down.
    Super minor nitpick but I didn't know what the mpg difference was off the top of my head, so that would have been good to say along with the other downsides of the ecoboost engine that you mentioned.
    I also really liked the example of the boat - more examples like that are super informative in helping me make a buying decision. For example, AWD vs FWD if I wanted to take the Maverick to Tahoe in the winter, or what the difference in MPG is between the AWD and FWD.

  • @BoopSnoot
    @BoopSnoot 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    The 8-speed is a handicap. Its based on the GM 9-speed transmission that has been wrecked by critics, and Ford initially declined using it even though they got its development completely for free from GM (due to a deal they worked out). Ford did decide to redesign it a bit and removed one of the gears to stop its constant hunting problem, but its not as good as Ford's 10-speed they use on RWD based platforms. Its also not nearly as efficient as the eCVT, and it is important to note the e-part as that electric motor in the transmission means that stop-start is much smoother and helps with the otherwise rubber-band feeling that CVTs that most people are familiar with have. The eCVTs efficiency means that in 0-30mph it actually outruns the FWD ecoboost off the line when not brake boosting, and is very close in 0-60mph when not brake boosting (which again, nobody brake boosts off of every stop sign in the real world).
    IMO get the Ecoboost if: 1) You do almost 100% highway driving. 2) You live in a very cold climate 3) You need AWD 4) You need 4K tow rating. If those 4 don't apply to you, get the hybrid, its better in every way and saves $1K off the MSRP, provided you can order one at MSRP and don't pay an upcharge.

    You have a great screen presence, and 'presenter's voice'. If you continue to make videos, have a frequent and consistent upload schedule, and can follow through on coming up with informative and novel ideas for videos, I think you'll accrue views and subscribers quickly, and grow a ton in this next year.
    On topic: I agree that the 2.0 turbo is the more appealing drive-train choice simply because its necessary for AWD, which I think is an important accessory in capable trucks. The Maverick seems to be specifically designed for city dwellers who want some truck utility while still being able to park and afford fuel, and the 2wd hybrid seems to really excel there, and the 2.0 is not shabby either in that dept. The hybrid would probably be the ultimate small-duty city fleet vehicle, but if you're often driving in bad weather or if you have to go off the paved road for work or play, the AWD is afar and away the best option.
    If Ford sells a ton of these and finds a way to hybridize the 2.0 and offer AWD, I think they will sell a whole hell of a lot more. I see people saying that dealerships sell these Mavericks almost the moment they hit the lots, so Ford is obviously selling a ton of them, so let's hope that encourages them to really put it all together and combine the 2.0 turbo, AWD/4WD and some hybrid similar to their 3.5 powerboost system, and sell ALL the compact trucks. It might encourage GM and Ram and Toyota and Honda to offer up their own compact trucks and really get the competitive ball rolling, which should be nothing but good for the consumer.

    You should have done just a bit more research before claiming the 8 speed automatic over their eCVT. The Hybrid Maverick's eCVT does not use a metal band, it is a very simple transmission just gears and 1/3 the moving parts of a traditional transmission. No rubber band effect at all when I test drove it.

    • @JamesPlaysWithCars
      @JamesPlaysWithCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I don’t mean to say the CVT itself makes noise if that’s what you mean, but of course I should have been clearer. I mean the engine rpm’s and noise don’t rise and fall in close correlation with speed, which occurs with any drivetrain where the engine speed is not tied to the wheel speed with set gear ratios. This effect can easily be seen in POV driving videos of the Maverick. Thanks for your comment Miguel 👍🏼

Went with the XLT Luxury package which includes the spray-in bedliner, towing receiver hitch, and a few other niceties. I know this is weird, but I like the idea of a plain-jane XL but with Ecoboost. I much prefer the idea of an 8-speed; the upcharge is low. Don't need or want to tow; it's the lightest choice of all that's offered. All wheel drive is almost always a gas sucking option in any vehicle; more so that even 4WD part time; and that's not even considering the high up charge in order to devastate ones mpg voluntarily. No cruise control, however, is a real downer.

    Also know that 4k tow gets you both the 4 pin + the 7 pin connector, along with a brake controller next to the steering wheel.

      The only reason the highway MPG can be compared to the 2.0 ecoboost is because the hybrid drivetrain that Ford uses is about 3 generations behind Toyota. Currently we have a 2021 Toyota Sienna hybrid. 5000lbs and fully loaded going 75MPH on the interstate we got right around 37MPG. With only three people, we got over 40MPG. The conventional 2020 Sienna V6 driven under the same conditions couldn't sniff 25 mpg if its life depended on it.

    The hybrid Maverick doesn't have a CVT. It has an eCVT. They're entirely different things. One is a cone and belt system. The other is an orbital gear system that allows the proper power distribution from both the motor and engine.

    One thing, and I was thinking of ordering one, is that the ECO only comes with a 16 gal gas tank. Even though MPG maybe great, it means my twice a month visits of 450 miles each would mean a lot off fill-ups. If they had a 19/20 gal tank, I would re-consider. To some, 3 gals may not seem much, but many times its whats left between fill-ups, 3 gals.

Not really an off roader and not really planning on towing sizable trailers. I feel i may cone across times where I may want or need to tow 3-4k though. I have a slight hesitancy on buying a new gas truck with pushes towards electric, I worry about resell value in the future. I'm not going off roading, I'm not hauling huge trailers, and I'm not doing construction.

  • @bechtoea

    Please note I am saying the following fully well and knowing I am in the minority. So yeah, I respect your opinion, but what good is the internet if we can't provide a counterpoint, eh?
    Being nostalgic about how a conventional automatic works is much like arguing about how the electric starter whines on a Model T which is why one would prefer the crank handle. The 8 speed automatic to me is the sound of a relatively inefficient way of delivering power, with only 8 ratios instead of an infinite number of ratios.
    The CVT in the Ranger isn't a traditional CVT. It's two electric motors, a gasoline engine, and a few gears plus a planetary. There isn't much there and they simply don't break. The whine, or as you called it, the "moo" that you hear is the RPM of the engine being held constant, providing the specific amount of power and torque needed at that specific time. Then the drivetrain adjusts the ratio to ensure the engine can stay at that ideal RPM. So while it's not conventional, it is better in every way when compared to a relatively small number of ratios attempting to provide the ideal RPM and honestly failing all the time. With hybrids or anything with a CVT, people feel it doesn't accelerate because they can't hear the rise in RPM. If they just brought the engine to a specific RPM and watched the speedometer, they would see how responsive a CVT truly is. But like I said, I am in the minority.
    The other things, like an intrusive stop/start, comparatively miserable MPG, and the lack of "right now' electric motor torque are other reasons the hybrid is the best choice.

    • @baphomet8me
      @baphomet8me 2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I agree with you. My son has a hybrid Toyota C-HR and there is none of the “mooing” described here. The Maverick hybrid would be perfect for me as an urban driver as the vehicle is basically a small SUV that is shaped like a truck. Essentially, it is what I’d call a “99 percenter”. It will do about 99% of what I need and the rest requires a half-ton truck with about a 6000 pound towing capacity.

  • @Rlsummers041
    @Rlsummers041 2 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    You should do some additional research on e. CVT. Not anywhere near the same as CVT. Also hybrid drive system is very torquey. So I believe your first reason and second reason are on shaky ground. The main reason for getting EcoBoost would be due. I need all-wheel drive and 4K toy capacity. Really FX4 package May look cool with your sticker, but Maverick at this point is not an off of the road type of vehicle. I'm in team hybrid obviously, but if I were going to get an EcoBoost version I would order it with all-wheel drive and 4K tow package.

  • @JifferRiffic

    • @JamesPlaysWithCars
      @JamesPlaysWithCars  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      With either normal CVT’s or hybrid vehicle eCVT’s, the disconnection between engine rpm and vehicle speed is why the engine sound can be weirdly constant under hard acceleration (what I describe as the “mooing”). That’s a commonality of any transmission that doesn’t use set gear ratios between the engine and the wheels but instead uses continuously varying ratios to maximize efficiency.

Maverick is great because its a budget vehicle with a budget drivetrain. But once you add up all the options to transform it from a city hybrid into a small truck, the price difference between it and a Ranger isn't that much. The Ranger isn't even that much bigger than the Maverick, literal inches.

Equipped with its standard four-cylinder engine that's paired with an electric motor, the Maverick gets between 33 highway and 42 city MPG, making it America's most fuel-efficient hybrid pickup... so highway driving is a push... Skids and Hill Descent seem to be the only real offroad "upgrades". I couldn't care less about the FX4 wheels and tires, as Ford isn't likely to fit truly-aggressive ATs or MTs.
