Sometimes I forget Alpha was a Super Mario Odyssey speedrunner with competitive times at one point. I'm so used to him being internet funnyman that when he pulls out the skill like this it surprises me a bit.

The closest I've ever seen is the botw multiplayer mod, which isn't nearly as far along as this! And it can only handle half as many, right now.

I love how he is able to adapt the mod so quickly too! In the week between the runs he already made changes to the mod to help them along! Crafty is unmatched!

Dude, from that first video of smallant where he was underwater all the time and crafty just shows up in it to now, this mod has come a long way.

This is amazing. The things that the public are able to get up to when Nintendo doesn't pull the plug on their fan creations is always going to impress me.
I appreciate you highlighting specific things each runner did well, like Alpha and Nicro landing those clips, or Fir getting Snowdram first try. It really makes every runner feel important!

the fact that this is still only about 13 minutes quicker than the world record is absurd
yeah, but about 30 mins of the world record are just cutscenes, so there's really not much more room left for improvement
At this point Crafty did more for SMO's hype then Nintendo
Having one person do morning Metro while everyone else does the rest of the kingdoms up until then so they can skip straight to Snow and Seaside is so galaxy brain
This is incredibly well-made and so entertaining! I've wanted to see a coordinated group speedrun of Mario Odyssey since this mod came out, and this video was fantastic! Great job to everyone involved, great routing, editing, presentation, and can't forget a huge thank you to CraftyBoss for making this!

I'm actually surprised that with 8 people only one was designated as early metro
Checkpoints aren't shared, so two people would have to crc, only smallant other than cjya can do it I think, and he's out of practice, so I think it was deemed quicker not to risk him failing a couple of times before getting it.
@@T3Draco yeah, I meant a second person doing CRC as the delay doesn't seem to be long
@@0Clewi0 the problem is that the Crc takes two minutes every time, so if you fail it, the run’s dead
If you sent two people to early Metro, one of them would have to wait around for the other to beat the Mecha-Wiggler.
@@sniccups8390 Also it seems like the 7 people doing everything else is still only a little bit faster than the one in metro, if 2 people were there, metro would be done super fast but the rest would be slower; maybe the metro people could go deposit moons earlier and catch back up sooner though? Unsure.
After all these twists, feels good to have a normal speedrun
Ever considered doing races between groups? for instance 1 speed runner vs 3/4 non speed runners? IDK the viability given how the servers work, but if u only have 1 speed runner on one side it allows you to at least not require a second instance of multiplayer running

for anyone wondering, there is a speedrun page for online, and 8p is not the only player count you can do runs for
I wonder how short a run could be with 100 players or something ridiculous, i know it cant get lower than like 30min cause of the cutscenes, so it could get pretty close to even this 8 player run.
Thr big limit is number of kingdoms u can do at a time. You never need more players than moons needed to collect In a kingdom and for weird reasons some moons don't save much time. There's a lot of points where your just all catching up. Like if the next kingdom is already done.
So the main time save is kingdom splits and shortcuts like day metro and bruncheon
I'm interested in what the player limit would be before adding 1 player won't save any time
@@Zalied yeah, but like in a perfect run,the time could get close to like 37min or smth
It would be relatively easy to calculate this. With that many people, each person would only need to collect one moon per kingdom, so you don't have to worry about finding the fastest route between moons; every player would simply beeline it to their assigned moon. Therefore, the time spent in each kingdom would be equal to the time it takes to get the Nth fastest moon in that kingdom (with N being equal to the number of moons necessary to leave the kingdom).
@@LordPhilipJFry I don't think that would be the optimal number of players because some moons are way faster than other so while a player is assigned to a single moon (like hariet), some other may do way more than a single moon waiting for the multimoon to be taken to go to metro
Also, you have to consider that if you have someone at the odyssey, they'll take few seconds less to go to the next kingdom than the one that just got the last moon, so you'd have to make sure that the one(s) having the longest path are ready at the odyssey and you can't assign them the longest path for the previous kingdom
So no, it doesn't seem that simple if you take into account warp time and cinematic time

it's not on the main leaderboard, but there is already a separate page for online speedruns

... You can see it while he says that. There are a bunch of Marios running around on screen fighting bowser in their own separate games, so the "amazing" part is seeing them all fighting.
You put incredible work into designing this route! Awesome video.
These kinds of things are always incredibly fascinating to me, and Odyssey is probably one of the best games for this kind of approach to speedrunning. On a macro scale the game's pretty linear, you're doing the same kingdoms in relatively the same order every time, with the only deviations being two pairs of kingdoms that can be done in alternating order, but on a *micro* scale this game is *insanely* nonlinear due it not really caring *what* moons you get, just *how many,* which means having more people allows for delegation of responsibilities. Not every game benefits from the player being able to be in 8 places at once, but this one definitely does!
No need to be so humble, we all know you're the one who actually made the mod, not Crafty
