I actually really like 16 star because it’s a quick and simple category with no cutscenes that some one could do to break things up after completing an any% run
Might be the only Speedrun I do besides Any%
I like it because pays a nice homage to Mario 64
I feel like it should add getting the mario 64 outfit before getting the 16 stars
The problem is is there are a few factors that would play in debt how well you might do, like, how many coins did you have before going into mushroom. Someone could just go into mushroom with enough coins, and buy all of the stars, and then that's like sub 30 second

You must collect 16 unique stars
You must start from a file that has just arrived in Mushroom

Dude.... The 100% means that you get every collectible, item, etc.
Speedruns are made to be finishing the game the fastest, not obtaining everything. Also, according to your logic, Any% is the true run since 100% does Any% "accidentally"
The point CJ made though is that if you happen to do run A while doing run B, then run A shouldn't be it's own category.
By that logic there are a ton of different categories in SMO that shouldn't be a thing as you do quite a lot of them during the course of a 100% run.
If you want to flip the logic and say that Any% is the true run because you do it within 100% then in reality 1% is the true run because you do 1% within Any%... (or even 20 jumps, as surely most people would jump more than 20 times before reaching 1%) so yeah in both scenarios Any% isn't the "true" run :P
Having said all of that, it's definitely not a good idea to clog up the leaderboard with a ton of categories that are all similar, like how soup% is basically star% but with the very end cut out.
So ultimately I agree that most of the rejected ones should be rejected, but I can also understand the flaw in CJ's logic.

he’s saying if the steps of one are in the steps of the other. Like 100% you get different moons in different orders than in any%, meaning any% isnt actually contained in 100% as a run.
Soup% is “part of” star% in a sense that up until the part where you die (basically the last 10 seconds of the run) you get the same moons do the same movement go through the same paintings fight the same bosses etc.
The fact that the one category that “should return” is rolling into a wall a hundred times is probably the most speedrunner thing ever.
I feel like, once the speed runners try to start bonking, somehow, they magically can’t bonk.

When I heard "20 Jumps" I thought it was a limit on how many jumps you could do in one run, not just doing 20 jumps. I am disappointed.
Nipple% is an interesting category. It only works because it is funny and short and has something unique to offer because you have to collect 1000 (?) coins very early and no other run does this.

I genuinely love the 16 star catagory its quite unique and it is a little throwback to Super Mario 64.
I actually think if this could get worked out a little better it could be a really good catagory.
It could replace the Star% But instead of grabbing 1 Star you gotta grab 16 of em
100 IP clips is obviously a bad category, however I would argue that categories like it are good for a speed game because it incentivizes and encourages competition around practicing difficult tricks and also helps new runners have a way to build strong practice habits that gauge their progress in a quantifiable way.
1% speedrun is like the kid who plays a game but rage and never play again

Reminds me of when I look at game achievement stats on Steam and wonder why the hell so many people pay for a game and then don't even beat it, or don't play it for more than 10-15 minutes

I originally thought odyssey percent would be to obtain all of the collectibles and valuables from each kingdom that you can obtain with purple coins through shops. That would honestly he a very good run, but as it stands just entering the odyssey is too easy.

11:12 I actually thought 20 jumps would've been a run where you beat the game and try this occasionally 20 times and then you go to toadette and see if you oy had 20 or less/more jumps and if you have the run is invalid. I don't know why I thought that but, honestly I think it would be cool even if it was a bit too similar to jumpless.

I thought 20 jumps was going to be beating the game with at most 20 jumps, so you have to decide where the best spots are in the game to use your jumps the best
I acutually kinda liked 16star. There are lots of speedruns in games that require having beat the game already !
take mario galaxy for example; most runners do the run as luigi which requires a completed file as mario
4:02% common mistake with rookie runners, you also need to beat 1% of the kingdoms (cap) and get 1% of captures.

Honestly I think most of these runs are perfectly fine. We can't really just decide that one meme run like nipple% is okay, but others aren't. It's all just about having fun anyway

i think IP clip would be good if it were slightly fewer, somewhere in like the 30s i think. I think it would increase the odds it actually gets run if it wasnt jsut a RSI waiting to happen.

I believe 16 star should be re-visited - can be heavily optimized and decent goal.
Other then 100% Any% Low% (And their Glitch allowing varients) The best way to make a joke category is to make something simple. (Preferably something short) But fun and interesting in concept and execution.
Nipple Percent works because you need 1k Coins by the 3rd Kingdom of the game. Which is an actual feat, needing you to route interesting ways to get that many coins.
Personally, I liked the 20 jumps% the most. It obviously takes the most skill and it’s absolutely exquisite. The utmost skill and power it takes to achieve what cj did is immense. Amazing job jumping 20 times

That only applies if the steps are exactly or almost exactly the same, which isn't the case for 100% vs any%.

I have a theory to skip the ruined wire in minimum captures. If you die and capture something at the same time, the game will teleport you to the coordinates 0,0 which happens to be right in the boss fight arena. My theory is this: If you go in to two player mode and walk up to the wire, there will be a pile of rubble to the left. Trap Cappy behind this rubble and then proceed to jump over the edge to the right with Mario. When you are falling down, blindly steer cappy onto the wire right as you die. Maybe if you get it frame-perfect, the game will count this as a death instead of a capture, and you will be teleported into the arena.

Ok CJ, I guess any% shouldn’t be a run then because it’s completed during AUM which also shouldn’t be a run because it’s completed during 100%?
The routes are different though, but for 1% you're basically doing the exact same thing as 100% in that you collect purple coins and moons but 1% just stops sooner, for any% you have a different route and same for AUM, since any% doesn't care about getting all moons and therefore goes faster and AUM doesn't collect purple coins.

I don't think there's a speedrun for it, but some people have done it before, including CJ, if you check his other videos.

In the case of 100% it objectively isn't "accidental" though, so there is no logic there.

The World Tour Death % montage was a banger.
As a Skylanders Spyro's Adventure Speedrunner, I love our version of Soup%. it our meme using one of the characters with the most clips in the game. We use the air turtle "Warnado" which the community named Soup, to jump over walls and gates. Jumping is impossible in the game so being able to jump over almost any wall is an insane time save. We have called the jumps "Soup Jumps" and they are heavily used in Warpless Any% runs.
Our Soup% is getting Soup's (Warnado's) Soul Gem while using Soup
16 stars could be a good quick category w more rules, like specifying what state the savefile has to be in at the start (x number of coins, no mushroom purps, etc)

For 1%, It means all checkpoints (0.85 = 1) All souvenirs (0.52) All captures, ok they are all 1, So 1 checkpoint, 1 souvenir, 1 outfit, 9 moons, 10 purps, 1 music disk, and 1 capture.
I like that your not just pretending to like some of the runs for the idea. This is good content well done

I wonder what Low% would look like for this game. Any% already gets the fewest amount of stars possible. I guess Min Caps shows us fewest captures. So maybe fewest music tracks, fewest checkpoints, etc. Or maybe a category based around making sure you qualify for the fewest Toadette stars?
On the note of Toadette, I bet a few of her stars could make for some fun routes, but I feel like merely accomplishing it should be enough. Having to actually get the star from her means beating the full game, doing a little more, and having to worry about accidentally picking up other stars from her and losing time to them. Jump 10000 times is probably not one of them considering your view of just 20 ;)
Max Coins could be neat. Specifically, you get your coin counter to 0 in the post game, then max it out playing Luigi's minigame. The bit of randomness to where balloons could be would be the crazy part of the run. Makes me think of SMM2's 16 courses run.
There's this really cool game called Spoiler Alert where you have to play a platformer "backwards". I could see people having fun having to do Any% backwards, starting with controlling Bowser and ending with Cap Kingdom.
CJ should get a mod where you can't bonk so his chat is nicer to him lol

Yeah, but there's a clear difference in the routing of 1 star vs 16 star vs 70 star vs 120 star, (Like, getting 16 stars in a 16 star run is very different than getting 16 stars in a 70 star run)
Been a while since I played SMO, but I think you can beat you personal best in 20Jumps% by jumping while moving up a hill, because you land on the ground faster.
