2019 Specialized Levo - How to carry a spare battery in an Evoc Backpack

  • Did the London to Brighton Off Road ride and I knew that I would need a spare. I have an Evoc Trail E-Ride backpack and was curious to see if it fit. Pretty snug and definitely not designed for this battery, but it'll just about squeeze in.

    Hey all, had a few questions about carrying a 2nd battery for the 2019 Levo so did a quick video. I used this exact setup on my London to Brighton ride recently Thanks, Rob.

    If you have a backpack that is a little too small but has the double zip on the zipper you can first put your battery in the bag. Leave it sticking a little out of the top. Zip both zippers up from either side the put a zip tie through the zipper holes so they don't come down. Stays nice and secure and doesn't put unneeded stress on the zippers and material of the bag.

    Interesting.... :) That's one of the reasons I'm absolutely fine with the external Shimano battery on my Commencal. I just made a padded pouch for it and it can fit in any of my backpacks.

    I surrounded my battery with flexible foam and then used three straps to attach the battery to the frame just in front of the internal battery. I wouldn’t use this in wet conditions or on trail with drops, but it has worked on smooth ground.

    It would be nice it Specialized sold a purpose made backpack for their batteries. And an option of a extension cable from the spare battery to an inlet jack on the bike. That would save the hassle of changing the battery on those long days on the saddle.

      I think the 700Wh battery will cover 95% of rides. I’m going to do a range test with that battery as soon as I can get hold of it!

    • @2wheelsonline
      @2wheelsonline 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      A distance test of the 700Wh would be more interesting than this video. I can't see the point of this video as it's about carrying the new battery when most people haven't even got the new bike yet. The backpack is interesting even though it's way too expensive :-(

  • @DKOB24
    @DKOB24 4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That backpack has a extension zipper in the bottom if I’m not wrong. I’ve seen backpacks that can hold the battery in the middle going in the extension from the bottom. Keeping it nice and straight. If you keep it side ways it could stab you the shoulder.

    I just got the newest evoc e-ride trial back back and if you remove the plastic protector from the battery, the 2020 (same as 2019) Levo battery just (barely) fits into the battery compartment and allows the Evoc to be zippered up. The top strap does not close but I got my Taylor to add some extra Velcro so it can be secured in place. Its a tight fit, but it works!!!

      Apparently it’s v important to have the back protector in place of you are carrying such a heavy item in your backpack- to prevent severe injury if you crash.
      I’ve seen elsewhere that you can keep the back protector in and get the Levo battery in vertically, just need a few modifications to the battery holder, there’s a video from a woman Tori who’s done it :)

      It's not that heavy on your back. I did HEAVEN OF THE SOUTH in May about a 40 mile loop. Your hips and shoulders share the load. I regularly carry my spear battery in the same backpack that rob uses.

  • @PMJ4

    I bought the backpack in this video, just found it too ridged with the back protector, very heavy with a water bladder so with a battery as well it would be impractical, back with my camelbak now.

    Hi everyone. The TCU is dead on my 2020 Levo Expert purchased in December. The problem started a few rides ago when I had to repetetively press the on button until eventually it started. This went on for a few rides but now I get no response from it. The TCU has a tiny "backup battery" & I'm wondering if thats the problem but it seems almost impossible to get out of its housing. Can anyone advise what might be wrong?

    Rob, I would like to ship a Levo battery from Taiwan to Japan, but the shipper in Taiwan wants me to give them the "Test Summary" for the SBC-B22 700 Wh battery. It's that UN Sub-Section 38.3 UN Manual of Tests and Criteria for lithium batteries. I found the "Test Summary" for the SBC-B13 700 Wh battery, but it seems there is also the SBC-B22 version of the Gen 2 bike battery. Do you know where I can find a PDF of that? Thanks.

    It’s almost a shame that you bought the e version of that backpack, as it’s likely that they’ll have whacked a dump load of extra profit on an E compatible backpack (given that anything e related is profitable now in its early stages of sport development).
    I am pretty sure that either EVOC or other manufacturers would manufacture something of a length closer to that of the battery, certainly that would cause less stress to the zipper and material at the bottom of the bag. Maybe it’s worth sowing past a dealership or a GoOutdoors or something and just look to see what’s maybe available. It’s possible that my camelbaks per suit 24 that I snowboard with would be long enough for this battery, ill know next week when my 2019 Levo Carbon arrives.

    Really don’t like the battery design on the new Levo. It may look elegant from the outside but cooling such a long thin pack has to be harder and carrying a spare as this video shows is pretty impractical. The silliest bit is that the 500 and 700wh packs are the same size; they really should have made the 500 pack split in 2 with the battery in the big half and a short empty spacer (with internal wires to make the electrical contact near the headset) clip on to it before insertion. That would make carrying a spare way easier.

    • @RobRidesEMTB
      @RobRidesEMTB  5 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Always a trade off right? Compromises need to be made between aesthetics, bike geometry and functionality. I really like the look of the 2019 Levo and the geometry is awesome. Trade off? Battery needs to be long and thin. But, you can still carry a spare. Just. I managed it, I rode 75 miles. Wouldn't have been able to do it on a single battery. Just get a backpack big enough and you're good to carry a spare.

    • @gingermattb
      @gingermattb 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I’ll take functionality and practicality over looks any day. I really don’t mind partially integrated batteries, as long as I can demount it easily and carry a spare I am happy; the new Levo doesn’t meet either criteria I’m afraid.

  • @Shithappenswhenu
    @Shithappenswhenu 3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

    That is where the older designed ebikes win hands down, even just to remove battery to put bike in boot of car.
    Granted newer integrated design is aesthetically far more appealing but for practicality purposes its New design is style over substance.
