  • If you're wondered how to create different textured finishes, we had jewellery maker Elizabethfje Design go through a fair few to allow you to learn more.
Many thanks to Elizabeth for working with us on this
Elizabeth is a silversmith and student, whose works are inspired by the ancient art and techniques of Classical Antiquity, which she studies as an undergrad. Her practice centres on unique ready-to-wear and bespoke pieces and looks to produce jewellery as sustainably and ethically as possible.

What is the silver block you hammer on? Is that necessary? I tried hammering on wood and it just bent my metal. I don’t understand. I want that beautiful hammered look in silver with little dents all over it.

      Sian says:
"When you are adding texture to a material like silver with hammers or stamps then it helps to place that silver on a surface that is harder than the silver such as a steel block. there are lots of steel blocks at different price points and quality."

There are also anvils on a benchpeg that will do the job:

      Or for higher end Fretz

You can also use a rubber block under a steel block to absorb some of the shock
