Went through this exact issue with my main channel and had to start again. It's a tough pill to swallow in the short term but as you said, long term waaaay better
Fellow Brit and graduate of Ed’s systems here. Thanks for the stellar insights and making me chuckle this morning. There’s bellends everywhere, look out!
I feel this video is aimed at me, with my 10k views!! Loved this. Its really reassuring to hear this and its sort of what I have thought and felt, but maybe was trying to kid myself to make myself feel better. I am sort of doing what Mat Armstrong is doing, but in the motorcycle space. I love what Mat Armstrong does but I did think to myself, he is so relaint on getting 1mil views but doesn't actually have a business or long term game. Thanks for this mate
I ABSOLUTELY LOVE THIS , as someone who wanna start a channel im here stock piling videos like this in media wallet so when i reading to begin my TH-cam journey ill be able to be prepared and revisit it in media wallet
I'm trying to get fit, working in hospitality, it's hard you tell how it is eg not beating myself up for missing a run or a workout! You keep me level bro
This is so so so true. I built an audience of 20k from bs titles that got views and I eventually stopped because it felt pointless to me. Now, I make content I enjoy and reflects who I am as a person and the views are far far less but each view is a better quality view, which means long term, I know I can have a dedicated audience who will invest in what I want to sell. Issue we have now is most people WANT to be famous and they don't care how. Long term we're going to see more and more of these creators struggling financially as it all dies down eventually.
I bought Ed film booth's program because I saw you as a testimonial haha, loved watching your content and you're still one of my favourite TH-camrs - your vids were definitely worth making, even if they didn't serve you business wise you seemed to like the creation of them, so worst case scenario you had some fun and learned more about yourself. RIP old james 🤠
I think James is going through the Hormozi transition.. e.g. bored of talking fitness and rather be talking biz.. can kinda tell from the enthusiasm between talking calories < talking emails haha
Mate I’m a massive fan. I actually reference your content a lot when talking about great script writing. Can you pleas email me? James@jamessmithacademy.com I’m flying to the uk this week so let me know where you live, could even get a coffee.
My 2nd channel with 20,000 subscribers makes the same amount (very soon to be a lot more) than this channel with 350,000 subscribers. Choosing who to target is 100x more important than how many subs you have.
Ed is also a hero of mine, and I thought of him as soon as I saw your title :) Been a fan of your big channel but understand the reasons for switching to the smaller niche channel The problem I have is that my TH-cam channel IS essentially the business - there's no product or service that I can sell that I've thought of. I really enjoy content creation but it would certainly help if I could actually make decent liveable money from it (and switch to it full time). Not sure if you can help me there, but as you asked at the end I figure I might as well mention it just in case.
best youtubers are the best writers, okay now I just understood why I really enjoyed James' emails almost more than the videos lol only a good thing they're great emails

This is how I build from the very beginning with my Social Media. It has to give value to my viewers, it has to enrich their life. It is my business card, my proof of my knowledge.
As a youtube consultant for 10 years, 100% correct choice mate. TH-cam is more like a netflix series these days, make similar content to ensure people have something to subscribe too. I made a video that got £200 from 200 views, was donations. The goal is also to think about the end goal, if its to increase your business sales... (I have so many american real estate clients who want 10,000 views... to sell 1 house) - then literally they only need 1 buyer. The other 9,999 wouldnt care. So work backwards etc. Good luck with your new channel, still a few improvements but youll get back there.
I do the same thing. I have 1000 subscribers, launched a downloadable online-product and earned 10k with it within 1 year. I know it's not enough to live from, however it's a great side hustle and it's just 1k subs - and around 1-2k people watching each video.
My thoughts are to adapt to the audience and find the products that they value. I think I would see more potential in 500k everyday people than 5k high value people. Otherwise I get your point. Cheers J
I have grown to over 80K subs on this channel & 95K on another and I'm still finding myself having to pivot and make new content to keep my audience intrigued
I just started a TH-cam page on Transformation and posted my first Video. I only got 4 subs and 70 views so far. Was super demoralising at first before I shifted my mindset. Thanks so much for the insight.
Intuitively, I have known this all along. Have gotten off track here and there, but for the most part, stayed firm. It takes more time to build a loyal audience. But it will be worth it.
I recently did one scripted 38 min long video and it really outperformed all my regular shorter videos in terms of watch hours and engagement. I need to make more of those, but I also want to keep my shorter performance videos. I am enjoying the process though. Lots to learn.
How can I create a clear personal brand when I’m interested in so many things like psychology, photography, filmmaking, and podcasting? Should I incorporate my professional work, like creating TH-cam ads and podcasts for clients, into my personal content? Or would mixing everything-psychology, cinematic videos, behind-the-scenes client work, and podcasts-make my brand confusing for the audience?
@@jayreynoldsirl hi! thanks for your message. I think I'll pick psycology and use photography and filmmaking to create nice videos about it. Will think about podcasting in the near future :)
One of things I want to know, should I start a seperate channel inside of the niche I want to go into when I currently have a small channel? I have about 2500 subscribers but my videos up to this point haven’t been 100% focused. My channel originally got some traction years ago because of music remixes and tutorials that I made, but now I want to pivot to fitness advice for business people. Awesome video dude. I do not have your amont of following but I realize that my audience if I keep growing it as I was doing it will get me nowhere. Hope your bussiness does well.

Morning James, I'm not a content creator, but I do own a business in the UK. Conservatory roof conversions.
