Awwww yeah. Got me thinking hard with this one. Also pivoting to a smaller channel making content focused on my niche. Excited for it, and this helps the goal become much clearer. Thank you
This is so so so true. I built an audience of 20k from bs titles that got views and I eventually stopped because it felt pointless to me. Now, I make content I enjoy and reflects who I am as a person and the views are far far less but each view is a better quality view, which means long term, I know I can have a dedicated audience who will invest in what I want to sell. Issue we have now is most people WANT to be famous and they don't care how. Long term we're going to see more and more of these creators struggling financially as it all dies down eventually.

Then I’m caught in the catch 22 of needing your course but not being able to afford it, so thanks for the free information and I’ll have to get someone to hold me accountable while I use it. Loving your content mate 🤙🏻
I do the same thing. I have 1000 subscribers, launched a downloadable online-product and earned 10k with it within 1 year. I know it's not enough to live from, however it's a great side hustle and it's just 1k subs - and around 1-2k people watching each video.
I just started a TH-cam page on Transformation and posted my first Video. I only got 4 subs and 70 views so far. Was super demoralising at first before I shifted my mindset. Thanks so much for the insight.
I did the same thing. In April I quit my channel manager job to go full-time into creating. My TH-cam channel was bringing in maybe 20% of what I needed to survive then. I had savings, and I had a product idea that I thought would be great for espresso nerds like me. I've spent the last 5 months making content for the niche audience who likes what I talk about and making a product just for them. I'm just gearing up to launch it on Kickstarter and man, it's nerve wracking to put it all on the line, but I would MUCH rather be doing this and figuring it out for myself than working for someone else as a cog in a machine for 40 hours a week. Oh, and I had a viral video last month and after the initial kind and thoughtful comments from my core audience, the bell-ends started coming in and now I have to ignore the comments because they are almost all brutal and derisive. What do I gain from that viral video? Some numbers go up and TH-cam paid me a LOT less than your 12k for that video. NOT worth it. I'm still proud of the video but you don't really want to go viral. You want to be "famous to the family" not to the broad population of assholes who don't care, they just want to tear everyone down a peg for shits and giggles. Keep doing what you're doing man, appreciate you.
I'm trying to get fit, working in hospitality, it's hard you tell how it is eg not beating myself up for missing a run or a workout! You keep me level bro
Ed is also a hero of mine, and I thought of him as soon as I saw your title :) Been a fan of your big channel but understand the reasons for switching to the smaller niche channel The problem I have is that my TH-cam channel IS essentially the business - there's no product or service that I can sell that I've thought of. I really enjoy content creation but it would certainly help if I could actually make decent liveable money from it (and switch to it full time). Not sure if you can help me there, but as you asked at the end I figure I might as well mention it just in case.
My thoughts are to adapt to the audience and find the products that they value. I think I would see more potential in 500k everyday people than 5k high value people. Otherwise I get your point. Cheers J
How can I create a clear personal brand when I’m interested in so many things like psychology, photography, filmmaking, and podcasting? Should I incorporate my professional work, like creating TH-cam ads and podcasts for clients, into my personal content? @@jayreynoldsirl hi! thanks for your message. I think I'll pick psycology and use photography and filmmaking to create nice videos about it. Will think about podcasting in the near future :)
As a youtube consultant for 10 years, 100% correct choice mate. TH-cam is more like a netflix series these days, make similar content to ensure people have something to subscribe too. I made a video that got £200 from 200 views, was donations. The goal is also to think about the end goal, if its to increase your business sales... (I have so many american real estate clients who want 10,000 views... to sell 1 house) - then literally they only need 1 buyer. The other 9,999 wouldnt care. So work backwards etc. Good luck with your new channel, still a few improvements but youll get back there.
Intuitively, I have known this all along. Have gotten off track here and there, but for the most part, stayed firm. It takes more time to build a loyal audience. But it will be worth it.
Awesome video dude. I do not have your amont of following but I realize that my audience if I keep growing it as I was doing it will get me nowhere. Hope your bussiness does well.

One of things I want to know, should I start a seperate channel inside of the niche I want to go into when I currently have a small channel? I have about 2500 subscribers but my videos up to this point haven’t been 100% focused. My channel originally got some traction years ago because of music remixes and tutorials that I made, but now I want to pivot to fitness advice for business people. Should I try and transition my channel to that or just start a new one?
Morning James, I'm not a content creator, but I do own a business in the UK. Conservatory roof conversions. I'm aware of 3 ways to generate business. 1 Talk to people one on one ( we have telesales), 2 run some adverts ( we use google), and some form of content creation. We don't do this, hence why I'm here. I'm interested in email marketing with videos to cut our sales cycle and get more people to see me. I close the highest percentage. And start some content. I have no idea where to start. Would your system be of benefit?
Thanks for the video, I’ve bought into your mentorship and am trying to promote a business being myself as a PT, but I am also a creative and would like to post more holistic content, design, lifestyle, sports/combat genuinely. Can i still promote my business and not niche down into just Fitness? I feel as though I could promote a holistic lifestyle business if I played the long game but i’m not sure what is the best way forward.
I have grown to over 80K subs on this channel & 95K on another and I'm still finding myself having to pivot and make new content to keep my audience intrigued
For me I'm getting by on direct fan support (patreon) so I plug that every video and that's working really well for me, but I would love some outside perspective on what I should be building other than videos to increase my financial security. I'm in the 3D printing niche, so partnerships with brands might be an option but I'm not sure I love that or if its even much an improvement on affiliate marketing. Selling prints unless I do them in high volume isn't likely to be super profitable either, so some kind of digital product is likely best - but then those typically don't sell for much in my niche. Maybe I'm making some poor assumptions though. I'm based in Sydney as well and yeah the housing market is brutal here, so the way I see it this is a major hair on fire problem that needs solving right away if I'm ever going to enjoy the security of owning my own home.
Quick question: I’m a personal trainer with 2 Insta accounts-one personal (48 followers) and one for self-improvement, “Echo Improvement” (1k followers). I want to start an email list, landing page, and maybe even a community. Should I focus on my fitness coaching where I feel I have more credibility, or go all in on self-improvement content with Echo Improvement? PS: I am on the verge of buying the course, even as a broke college student (which may or may not be a dumb financial decision).
@@JamesSmithBusiness Ok, there are a few differences though. Anyway, I have one more question, thanks for answering btw If I sign up for the mentorship, could I get a refund on the Social Media course I paid 100 for?
Hi James, thanks for the tips. One of the problems I'm facing is how to create a business from my content? Do i just link my landing page which takes them to purchase a program to follow, not sure this is a good enough model?
The takeaway from this video isn't that one should use TH-cam differently, it's that paying the bills via a content treadmill is psychologically detrimental to just about everyone...
the channel for my company is for our kettlebell training business. however we are having the issue of creating engaging content that isn’t click bait dumbshit, we dig a little deeper into the science and psychology of training with kettlebells. our client base is mid 30’s-50’s. Would you recommend your binge strategy when it comes to making our videos even if it is higher level concepts?
My interest is to get people to explore the great outdoors. If you just have one camera and one bicycle, do you need to be in front of the camera? Or, put it another way, will a POV camera, helmet mounted, be able to capture live action, chance encounters with people, planned meetings with people and other content? For weight reasons, I don't want to carry a tripod and, for money reasons, I can't hire a cameraman. Yet I feel that, to have a parasocial relationship that works with viewers, I need to be in front of the camera. I am reasonably sure that my narration, wit and words will work from behind the camera but I might have a struggle developing a POV style that works. Please do something about being in front of the camera and how to do it if you can't be/don't want to be in front of the camera. Thank you!
Great advice, James. I have an idea I have been planning for a while. I'm not keen on being on youtube. Could be very lucrative. I think you could help. Are you up for it?
I like your content. However, about this video: Your main channel is on fitness. This channel is on fitness BUSINESS. = different market. & on your fitness channel you're probably selling little drinks & getting affiliate commissions from selling fitness equipment. Where as on this channel you're selling your own big ticket info courses, which dont need a big subscriber base. You're comparing oranges with apples are you not?

I’m a barber, best connection job there is
Class video James 😊
Good vid! Title + thumbnail + opening 30 seconds. The rest doesn’t matter… can vouch for high earning industry vs volume of views.
Very interesting.
Heaps good info on the new channel
The takeaway from this video isn't that one should use TH-cam differently, it's that paying the bills via a content treadmill is psychologically detrimental to just about everyone...
how long you been in Australia?
Depth of connection. Value based content, build community, not an audience.
the channel for my company is for our kettlebell training business. however we are having the issue of creating engaging content that isn’t click bait dumbshit, we dig a little deeper into the science and psychology of training with kettlebells. our client base is mid 30’s-50’s. Would you recommend your binge strategy when it comes to making our videos even if it is higher level concepts?
Great points, but it 12K is still a lot of money for most people.

i loved your last channel, just finding this one now. lmaoo
Thank you!
Try watching harveyridesbikes to see how interactions on a motorbike work like this.
It would be neat if you made the number of subs in the title dynamic so that it automatically changes as your older channel gains subs 😛
Commissions from selling gym equipment? I’ve never done a paid post ya nonce 😂😂
