It felt like my takeaway had just as much motivation in relatability as it did inspiration in looking up to a respected drummer.

I've been playing drums more than 50 years. I love how Louis embraced his heroes and plays the way he wants. When I was a kid, everyone always tried to get me to stop playing so busy. He's like, "I'll do what I want. This is how I play."

    • @thefunkybeautiful
      @thefunkybeautiful 2 ปีที่แล้ว +14

Exactly! Imitate and break down what you like best, and develop into the drummer you want to be, not someone else's idea of a drummer. You never stop learning, that's the beauty of drumming. If every drummer stuck to rigid structure and the rule book, drumming would never have evolved as it has done.

@@troubleboy Yes but chick is a pianist who translates his piano skills to drums. I’m talking about drummers who take up piano. 18:50 so glad that I wasn't the only one that spent lockdown doing this. I went as far as filming my picking in slow motion which was a whole rabbit hole to go down.

    •  ปีที่แล้ว

Lol, I didn’t exactly do it during the lockdown but it’s certainly a topic visited multiple times in my playing. I’ve kind of switched from a more anchored to floating picking hand technique, but every time I visit “how to hold the pick” the result is always “how most guitarists seem to hold their pick does not work AT ALL for me”. I don’t know if it’s true but many seem to hold the pick against like the first or second joint of their index finger? (I hold it against the fingertip more.) I just can’t do that. Maybe it has advantages, maybe not. Either way it’s way too late and not worth it to change at this point I feel.
I do alter my grip when strumming compared to picking single notes too… but that’s something I’ve been doing for a long time too which I wasn’t even aware of doing until recently so can’t really tell if good or bad. 😅

Oh my god, what a joy to hear some guys talking about serious drumming. This is so refreshing, so light and so absolutely right.
    Thank you so much!!!
Louis is a beast, let's face it.

I noticed that they overcorrected a little and cut the entire Jojo part out of the video, that's a shame...

    I love Louis Cole.
Genuinely. I'm always happy to learn watching him, & as a guy who doesn't really emote in the MVs I've seen, his face truly lights up whenever he talks about anything related to drums & it's a beautiful thing to see

My absolute favorite thing with all the guests is that they're willing to try to mimic what they hear...and most have the background to succeed which is WILD. I just love listening to every episode and feeling like a fly on the wall as people nerd out about music. I would love to hear more thoughts about how you guys feel about artists with very wide/large instrumentation and what it brings to the music. You touched on it briefly in the September video about Earth Wind & Fire, but I've been wondering about this since I heard Aim and Ignite by fun.

One day I was listening to Louis Cole and sent it to a friend of mine. "Oh, you should check this" he said, and sent me back a video of "Scary Pockets".
Today, I found out that these guys are connected. Wonderful how synchronization works. Thanks world! Thanks music!

That's... not Jojo Mayer. But seriously this was a great video. I LOVE Keith Carlock, in particular the Wayne Krantz and Lincoln Goines/Tim Lefebvre stuff. There's some stellar north sea jazz footage knocking around

I love the adjectives you guys use (soupy, organic) - I've been an amateur musician (and listener) for a while, and there were some musicians for whom I naturally went towards some kind of food-based description. E.g. whenever I l hear Paul Chambers (Miles bassist on Kind of Blue), I instantly felt his tone was 'edible' in some way and I couldn't justify why!

I appreciate the discussion especially as it moved into embodied cognition/musicality. Ryan mentions deep diving into picking style. I have enjoyed watching sarod and oud players and thinking about where their tone, attack and beat come from and how it manages the constraints of their instruments. Thanks again.

Keith Carlock's trad grip thing is wild! Nobody sounds like him, I got to see him live in Kolkata with Wayne Krantz and Tim Lefebvre as a teenager over a decade ago, and safe to say, I've not been ok since XD love that Louis was inspired by him! So frikkin cool

I especially love how Louis (and our esteemed interviewers) open up about how we try to emulate our idols and fail, simply because of anatomy. I did this for years and didn't understand why I was failing.
As Louis says, the smart track is to embrace your weird body and its limits and play to its strengths. That's where your signature sound will come from.
