Both sound great but I prefer Warren's because it takes advantage of the room sound. What would John Bonham’s drums be without the stairwell at Headley Grange, on Led Zeppelin, When the Levee Breaks? I LOVE when engineers take advantage of the environment they're recording in. It makes the performance special and showcases the signature sound of the studio. In other words, you can't get that exact sound anywhere else. AWESOME VIDEO!!! 🥁🎶🎹🎶🎸

This kind of video is my happy place. I just finished the Nolly Drum course via Kristian's academy and submitted my mix today. I will be downloading these tracks as well. Thanks Warren and Nolly!
My god, just absolutely ridiculously well recorded drums on both counts! Nolly’s tracks all fit together so well that they already sound mixed, and Warren’s have so much life and character with every channel adding a little something-something in addition to the main thing it’s capturing. Unbelievably cool
Wow! This was one of the best drum production videoa Ive ever seen. Its like technique, philosophy and idea overload! But in my humble opinion I think there isnt one that is better than the other. For what I like and am hearing they are both absolutely great drum recordings but they both belong to different genres. Which was totally expected to me. Warren captured an AMAZING pop rock/classic rock drum sound to where Nolly got an AMAZING modern rock/metal sound. Not that Warrens couldnt be used on a modern rock song. When I hear them back-to-back for some reason I picture Warren's as the Valhalla Vintage Verb 70's setting and Nolly's as the Modern setting. 😂 Thank you both so very much! You are both incredible.
It's my first time being able to examine the raw tracks off them Josephson's and my god how good they are. The toms sound almost finished before you've even touched them. No wonder they are so expensive. They sound amazing!!
Nolly is an absolute sweetheart and amazing person along with being an incredible engineer. I had the honor of working with him on two projects, and the guy is just THE BEST.
THIS is absolutely amazing, really learned a lot! It shows the unique character and sound choices producers make consciously - both sound gorgeous! Nolly's is a bit more snare based and brighter, Warrens has more oomph and really this vintage vibe - great mic choices both of you!
As a drummer into my 51st year of playing, this was extremely enjoyable and educational. To cut to the chase, as presented, I would most certainly go with Nolly's approach and final sound. First of all, great drumming. That makes a huge difference. And the kit is well prepared for the session. Again, very important. I always want my drums in the most wide-open space it can be. It would have been nice to just hear the drums, even with just a two-mic setup as to how it sounded naturally in the room. My guess would be that Nolly's location would afford a more expansive and dynamic location vs. being closer to the back wall approach used by Warren. I am very impressed with the backwards approach of recording the kit from the batter side. His description of having basically three levels of sounds, each with specific characteristics, is brilliant. The snare drum, I haven't used a wood shell drum since I was in Jr. High in the mid 70's, exploded to life when those rear remote mics were engaged. While I would prefer the Black Beauty snare...what Nolly got out of a very high-quality snare drum is very nice. It just feels more "alive" to my ears. And as a player, that is inspiring and will most certainly contribute to me wanting to deliver the best tracks I possibly could!
I don’t even record drums but I love the craft of it all and this is by far the most informative and interesting and down to earth drum recording video on TH-cam. Regardless of genre you can learn SO much from this just from all the side comments. Brilliant stuff guys.

Great video guys! Really interesting to follow the discussion about each setup. Btw. You mentioned in the video that you captured some samples of the drums. Where can we download these samples?
I’m glad I watched this for several reasons. But firstly, Nolly mentioned (more than once) the importance of getting the record levels of each mic roughly the same. Which I would agree is an axiom of recording drums. Especially if you like using the mic, it’s type and placement before ever touching an eq.
We recorded at Electrical Audio w/ one of the house engineers and he used the E22s, surprisingly he also had them angled/not parallel. They were just perfect at mix time. Cad M179s and Audio Technica ATM450 are really good poor man's substitutes. The latter in particular because it's so small and side address. The bottom end is just huge on them too. I wish it had a little less output like the E22, but it does sound great, and I rarely have to do much to my toms in mixing. Switching to condensers on toms was a revelation for me.
These shoot outs are great.. I'd love to see a shootout of a full productions... engineer vs engineer to see how everything is done in the tracking process for all instruments.
Thank you for doing this Warren, this was a fantastic video, I already downloaded the tracks. Nolly definitely has an ear for great drum sounds but with that being said, I really enjoyed both approaches!
Funny how everyone is different. Two total different mixes by professionals, and yet I my ear would have shot for somewhere in the middle. Less room in Warren's mix and more high end in Nolly's is what my ear was thinking. Felt like my preference would have been a combo of the two
@@Producelikeapro and no offense to Nolly, I do have tinnitus, so there probably is enough high end in his for everyone else...lol I'm just impressed that I could recognize what was going on, and I have your videos to thank for that!
My goodness, the pro-level grade of all those microphones. You would need an amazing room to make the best use of them, as we hear in this video. Amazing stuff, but pretty much beyond most of us home studio dwellers.
that's mostly because of the drums and the room and engineer's skillset, you would be surprised how amazing of a recording you would get using a focusrite for all the pres with modest mics in that room and Nolly engineering it

Especially if you like using the mic, it’s type and placement before ever touching an eq.
Great stuff. Thanks very much
Glad you enjoyed it! Thanks ever so much!
Super impressed with Warrens sound man. It is really big and has a lot of body already on the way in. 10/10 for sure.
Thanks ever so much
This is so awesome, thanks so much for doing this, possibly best video you've ever done, great move. Love to see more!
Thanks ever so much!
That Nolly snare sound is unmistakable !
It certainly is! Maybe I should have flown my Ludwig Supraphonic over? Ha
Great Vid! Enjoyed that! Cheers Warren and Nolly!
Glad you enjoyed it!
2 guys that are very generous in terms of sharing their knowledge! :))
Thanks ever so much!
These shoot outs are great.. I'd love to see a shootout of a full productions... engineer vs engineer to see how everything is done in the tracking process for all instruments.
Wow this is a masterclass, thanks Warren!🙏🏻
Thanks! Glad you enjoyed it!
Felt like my preference would have been a combo of the two
Thanks ever so much! The mix you’re hearing is the right mix when tracking! So I mixed it with more rooms up because I loved the sound of them!
@@Producelikeapro and no offense to Nolly, I do have tinnitus, so there probably is enough high end in his for everyone else...lol I'm just impressed that I could recognize what was going on, and I have your videos to thank for that!
What an amazing drumsound 😇
Thanks ever so much!
I like doing the room mics behind the kit as well
Amazing! Thanks ever so much for sharing
My goodness, the pro-level grade of all those microphones. You would need an amazing room to make the best use of them, as we hear in this video. Amazing stuff, but pretty much beyond most of us home studio dwellers.
that's mostly because of the drums and the room and engineer's skillset, you would be surprised how amazing of a recording you would get using a focusrite for all the pres with modest mics in that room and Nolly engineering it
Ok, this is just awesome guys!
Thanks ever so much
Aaah Leeds ,great place
Yes! The Nave is an amazing studio!
A mix of Warren’s snare sound with the tightness of Nolly’s kik and toms.
Warren's recording really reminds me of the drum sounds on Foo Fighter's The Colour and the Shape
Thanks ever so much
Nailed it...
@@KratosIsSick thanks ever so much!
In fact now I am on a post hardcore run because of this. Glassjaw Coloring book. Fantastic sounds & drums.
