I know that was 32 years ago but perhaps Bruce is still scripting his shows. This is not criticism, just an observation.
His Broadway shows are scripted because it's BROADWAY!!! You have a script. You have a showbill. You do and say things in a certain order. That's how Broadway shows work whether they are a stage musical or a one woman/one man show.

It's a solo Broadway-show. A regular Springsteen-gig is anything but scripted. Look at his setlists from the past decade. On the Wrecking Ball tour he played over 200 (!) different songs.
