1. One Step Up 2. Tougher Than The Rest 3. Drive All Night 4. My Hometown 5. I'm On Fire Bruce Springsteen is my favorite artist of all time. It's so tough only giving a top 5 when he has written over 120 songs that I love!
"I'm On Fire" still gives me chills every time I hear it. I'm not the biggest Bruce Springsteen fan in general, but that one has to be one of the greatest songs I think I've ever heard.
As a die-hard Bruce fan, I've gotta say that "I'm On Fire" is one of my least favorite songs by him. Sounds too much like he's trying to do an Elvis impersonation on that one. And while the 'Born In the USA' album is great, each of his previous six albums are far better. You can't go wrong, however, with any Bruce album for the most part.
@@robertbykowski1398 I agree with you 100%. It is basically Bruce doing Elvis. He does it well, but still. It's a good song, but not really one of his best (in my opinion).
Tom Petty talked about that in an interview. Apparently when Tom was just starting out they opened for Springsteen and the crowd starting chanting for Bruce. He thought they were booing him and someone said "no they aren't saying boo, it's Bruuuuuce" and classic Tom Petty says...."what's the difference?"
"Born to Run"... I still get chills when I hear that song, especially at the part that goes, "...the amusement park rises cold and stark..." but Springsteen has so many great, great songs.
My Father’s House and Highway Patrolman are just superb songwriting, emotionally, lyrically, etc. Those songs kill me. Nebraska will always be my favorite.
Speaking of Nebraska, I would argue “State Trooper” has to be one of the most chilling and eerie songs ever made!! It shows how versatile the Boss is; that he can go from uplifting, upbeat power anthems to songs like that like it’s nothing. Most of the time when you hear songs that are meant to be disturbing or ‘scary’, they’re almost trying too hard…’State Trooper’ on the other hand, works because it’s so subtle. Just the repeated line “Mr State Trooper, please don’t stop me” really leaves a lot to the imagination!
You may already know this, but DeNiro "borrowed" the "You talking to me" line from Taxi Driver from Bruce, after seeing Bruce in concert before filming the movie.
I love all his songs, but my most favorite of them all is " Tougher Than Rest '" I love how the crowd were yelling out his name ( Bruce, Bruce, Bruce) when he appeared on the show. He was one great entertainer, that's for sure.
The greatest Rock and Roll songwriter of my lifetime. For every hit like Born in the USA, Hungry Heart and Born to Run, there was an Atlantic City, Two Faces and Downbound Train - literally perfect songs the likes of which he wrote over and over and over again.
I get chills when I hear Thunder road. Especially when Bruce gets to the, "Roll down the window and let the wind throw back your hair!" And the, "AND I'M. PULLIN OUT OF HERE TO WIIIIIIIIIIIIIN!!" My second is a tie between "Born to Run" and "Tenth avenue freeze out"
1. Badlands 2. Thunder Road 3. The Price You Pay 4. Growin' Up (live) 5. Open All Night / New York City Serenade / She's the One / Girls in their Summer Clothes / Jungleland / Two Hearts / Out in the Street / Candy's Room / One Step Up / I'm on Fire / Dancing in the Dark When you get to number 5 and realize you need to cheat & make some kind of 11-way tie.
Bruce has no ugly songs. I love Something in the Night, Adam Raised a Cain, Into the Fire, Nothing Man, Streets of Fire, One Step Up, Tougher than the Rest, Racing in the Streets... and more
At night I could hear the blood in my veins Just as black and whispering as the rain... ...The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake I can feel myself fading away So receive me brother with your faithless kiss Or will we leave each other alone like this On the streets of Philadelphia? Haunting and beautiful. Fitting tribute to all those unfortunate souls, just as The Rising is to the 911 fire fighters.
Remembers me on a Springsteen concert in Munich. Everybody start to scream "Bruuuuuuuuce" and a friend of mine asked me "Whats wrong with this fuckers why they booing him" . Good old times.
As a "classic Bruce fan" top 5 for me would be: Thunder Road, Prove It All Night, Darkness on the Edge of Town, Racing in the Street, Saint in the City.
Because they share the same politics...If Bruce were a conservative Colbert would have had a totally different interview and comfort level. Guaranteed!
My favorite is Racing In The Street! When i'm out driving on a warm, summer night, just when the sun has started to set and i'm out in the Volvo my grandfather once owned, i press play, and the evening is perfect!
All right I'll do it too: 1. JUNGLELAND - A true rock and roll epic with maybe the greatest sax solo ever 2. LONESOME DAY - That song got me through some really dark times 3. TENTH AVE FREEZE-OUT - Just a kick-ass R&B tune 4. SANDY - Some of his best lyrics and imagery 5. PROVE IT ALL NIGHT - Favorite version is from his '78 Passaic show Honorable Mention - The entire BORN TO RUN album
The Darkness-era tour live versions of Prove It All Night are absolutely killer, heard the Atlanta one first, immediately binged all the different versions (including Passaic) not long after that. Roy Bittan!!
That waitress I was seeing lost her desire for me,........... In case you didn't know. Sandy was turned into Sanna,........ by one Ulf Lundell. Swedish top artist....
I could name 50 Great Springsteen songs. "I got a 69 Chevy with a 396, fuelie heads and a Hurst on the floor". When I was 17 to 19 years old nobody mattered to me as much. Felt like he'd been where I was.
1: Incident on 57th Street and straight into Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) 2: Asbury Park, 4th of July )Sandy) 3: New York City Serenade 4: Jungleland 5: Backstreets All other lists are correct as well!
Spirits in the Night was the very first Bruce song I ever heard. It was released in 1973. I was 13 and my brother was 16. I credit him for introducing me to all the best music and musicians that had great music but were relatively unknown. He had a copy of “ Greetings from Asbury Park” and played “Spirits in the Night” for me. That was the moment I fell in love with Bruce. I raided my brother’s record collection. The only Bruce records he had back then were Greetings and The Wild the Innocent and the E Street Shuffle. I’m 58 now and have been a diehard Bruce fan ever since. Thanks Rich for a great musical education! Favorite Bruce songs: Racing in the Streets, Jungleland, New York City Serenade.
Can I just say that I love all music genres and when I came across Bruce, the lyrics hit deep man. We all have our favourite song from The Boss but Badlands is personal favourite.
Now this is interesting... several hundred people have responded with their own top 5 Springsteen songs and nobody has the same list, and there's about 70 songs mentioned. There's only a hand full of artists that have that large of a catalog that appeals so strongly... to so many people. Having watched thousands of Bruce videos on youtube I've figured out the secret sauce as to why he is so popular. It's because he gives a damn about his music about how it should be played and the passion with which it should be sung. For example: New York Serenade (2013 Rome) might be the best moment in music history as Billy and Jackie boogaloo down Broadway, until you listen to Jungleland (2009 NYC). 40 years after he wrote Jungleland he still sings it with as much passion as ever. Go to the 8:00 mark and watch and listen... he's totally consumed and in character, and each line is a poem of perfection working towards the seminal Jungleland screams at the conclusion. All we can do is thank him and listen to the wonders he's brought forth. My 5: 1) Racing in the street (Paramount 2009) 2) NYC Serenade (Rome) 3) Jungleland (NYC 2009) 4) Bobby Jean (2013 Wrecking ball Tour) 5) Thunder Road - any version. I know every word and sing it to myself all the time. "The screen door slams, Mary's dress waves... like a vision she dances across the porch as the radio plays, Roy Orbison singing for the lonely - hey that's me - I want you only. Don't turn me home again, I just can't face myself alone again.... I like Bobby Jean because he wrote it for Van Zandt... and in the middle of the song they lock eyes and there's a moment between them.
"There were ghosts in the eyes of all the boys you sent away. They haunt these dusty beach roads in the skeleton frames of burned out Chevrolets" has to be the THE greatest single line of rock poetry in the history of the world.
i think that was the best interview so far on that Show , specially the part about his father and the night Terrors , really open speaking , Colbert is a great host , just lets him talk , love that
I love the Boss. I would've put "I'm on Fire" on there, that middle eight is intense. "Feel like someone took a knife, baby, edgy and dull, and cut a six inch valley in the middle of my soul."
***** bring it want my address? You can see my face im not afraid of an internet troll. besides Im sure it isnt the first time you've encountered the clap.
I could never make a desert island list with just five songs. It depends on one's mood, don't you find? For instance, as soon as I suggest "Backstreets," don't you go, "oh, yeah, gotta have that."
41 shots, streets of Philadelphia, born to run, jungle land, the rising (in no particular order) Mary's place is always amazing as well, I love all of them tho
"Streets of Philadelphia" might not be the typical E-Steet Band sound, but to me, it's a stronger one for just that reason, really showcases his depth as a songwriter.
I was at record plant Studios when Born to Run was being recorded it was a wonderful experience and to see all these years later that Bruce is still going strong go to one of his concerts for 3 and 1/2 to 4 hours Non-Stop you are tired stay strong Bruce Miss Clarence very much rest in peace big man
Oh, God...how to choose. I first heard "Born to Run" more than 40 years ago, and lately I've been listening to his ballads and songs off the beaten path -- At this moment, my fave five would be "Tougher Than the Rest", "The Last Carnival", "Paradise" (gives me chills), "The Big Muddy", and "My Hometown" (This song seems to weave through every other one...and definitely through his book)...Amazing how he lives embedded in the place of his original roots, and amongst a huge batch of relatives...He's a rare treasure who lives a genuine life. This conversation's a treasure, too. Thank you, Stephen and Bruce!
I'm thrilled to see so many peeps put Atlantic City in the top spot! There are just too many to compete with it, but always find myself leaning towards Darkness on the Edge of Town.
My favorite springsteen songs are: The Ghoast of tom Joad(w. Tom morello), Badlands, The Promised land, Dancing in The Dark and Streets of Philadelphia
sherry darling is deffinatly in my top 5 bruce songs, every time i hear it i start singing and dancing like a crazy person it's just such a fun song and i think that it is also an extremely underrated song. i love that song so much.
So glad he mentioned thunder road, my all time favorite Springsteen track, before I'd heard that it was my hometown and sherry darling. Jungleland wasn't really my thing tho
In no order: Jungleland, Born To Run, Racing In The Street, Darkness On The Edge Of Town, Thunder Road OK no I can hardly do a top 10 let alone a top 5.
1. Backstreet 2. The River 3. Thunder Road 4. Lonesome Day 5. Born to Run 6. Atlantic City 7. Darkness on the Edge of Town 8. Tougher than the Rest (live) 9. The Rising 10. Rise Up .
to be fair, he's probably got a lot of life experience that neither you nor i have. i'd certainly listen to him. maybe i discard what he says later, but discarding his opinion out of hand is foolish and naive.
That's just silly. And why 'less than zero'? Why pick that strange number? Has he done something that makes his opinion even less important than yours?

"This is a copy of the original schematic..."
funny how he makes that sound so genuinely precious
Rosalita. That is all.
Sandy

Almost had a heart attack when i heard the booing glad it was bruce what they ssid. This man is a rock and roll legend!!!
He's pissed off trump fans by giving his opinion of the moron.
to be fair, he's probably got a lot of life experience that neither you nor i have. i'd certainly listen to him. maybe i discard what he says later, but discarding his opinion out of hand is foolish and naive.
That's just silly. And why 'less than zero'? Why pick that strange number? Has he done something that makes his opinion even less important than yours?
David Bloom Im not sure who or what your reffering to might have mispost this comment on accident.
