The fan Bruce is speaking of was named Steve. What Bruce did not mention is that while driving to meet Steve's parents, Steve put a bootleg tape of one of Bruce's concerts into his eight-track player and began to sing along, turning to Bruce and asking him to join with the chorus. Essentially they created carpool karaoke a few decades before James Corden. Steve suffered from diabetes and after a kidney transplant, a heart bypass, and other surgeries he passed away in October of 2003. Bruce continued to visit Steve's mom when in St. Louis (sadly Steve's dad died the year after meeting Bruce).
Because I'm from New Jersey, I have dozens of Springsteen stories. A newspaper colleague of mine told me about the son of a friend who was entering Boston College and ended up as a roommate of one of Bruce's kids. During orientation week, the parents of the kids in the dorm agreed to go to lunch. Of course, Bruce and Patty went. One of the parents said we're all paying for our meals because she knew Bruce would spring for all of them. Once they sat down, Bruce said, "I think you all know what i do for a living, but what do you do?" When the check came, Bruce had already paid it. When one of the parents said they had agreed to split the bill, Bruce said, "I didn't pay the bill; rock 'n' roll paid it."
I was working security in Paris for the Amnesty International Concert 1998.I had been on duty since 05:00,The weather was terrible, The boss showed up around 17:00, got out of the vehicle on the wrong side , straight into the crowd of fans, whom immediatley swarmded on him, Jerry his CPO was on the other side of barrier, I stepped in , explaned the situation, He said quite calmly, he would sign a few autographs and a photo or two. Which he did, remember it was pouring with rain, I managed to get him to the stage entrance, where he thanked me ,offered me a slug of bourbon , also asked how long I had been there and if I had eaten ? 10 minutes later a coffee and large club sandwich appeared. What a total Gent.

Before I went into the Marines back in 85 I decided I was going to meet Bruce. I drove to his house in Rumson and knocked on his door. He actually invited me into his kitchen to sign my books. He wrote from the halls of Montezuma to the Jersey shore... Bruce
Here's my Bruce story. In 1984 I lived in Red Bank NJ, and during that summer Bruce and the band were practicing for the upcoming Giants Stadium concert at Big Man's West on Monmouth St, which was Clarence Clemons' rock club. As I walked by there were a few dozen folks sitting and standing on the pavement listening to the music coming from the club. I hung out an hour or so, then one by one some of the band members exited the club. During this time there was a black Chevelle or similar car (with Crager mag wheels) parked right in front, and some folks were leaning against it. Eventually Bruce came out the front door and signed autographs (and I still have mine). Amazingly, Bruce then walked around to the driver's door of the car and was getting in - it was his car! Even more amazingly, one kid yelled "hey Bruce, how about a ride home!" And Bruce said - "Sure, hop in!" And the kid did, and the two drove off, with Bruce giving him a ride home. (This story was documented the next day in the Daily Register newspaper, the long time local Red Bank paper).
Just another of the many reasons I love Bruce and am a lifelong fan, he just continues to be such an amazing human, so talented and always so very kind to his fans. We are lucky to be alive during his lifetime and I'm so very thankful for him!!
Love Bruce and his story. There is mutual love between Bruce and his fans. You can feel it at each of his concerts. Bruce is one of our greatest musical treasures!
I don´t know many (famous) people who could have done (or can do) this. That´s why Bruce is so loved by his fans: beyond his music and his (amazing) concerts, he is very kind. And I could see that at the Cape City airport in 2014. I keep those pictures with him as true treasures. Thanks a lot Boss!
It’s not easy to be humble in general. Even harder when you’ve hit fame and success as Bruce has. Guy is honestly a legend. I sure as hell wouldn’t have done the same thing
When you are singing for the workers, it’s wise to be familiar with them. I’ve heard stories of him encountering all kinds of people, and interacting with them. I’m glad he can live a somewhat normal life in his hometown. So many celebrities become prisoners of their own fame, locked away in isolation.
My daughter worked as a host at a restaurant at the Jersey shore. Bruce was there with his family for breakfast. My daughter knew his daughter but not well. When she sat them his daughter said hi to her and they chatted for a few seconds. My daughter said to Bruce I will see you at the concert Sunday night in the Meadowlands. She mentioned the tickets were a birthday present. He asked her name and said Happy Birthday. At the concert he actually said "Is ( my daughters name ) in the crowd? If you are have a Happy Birthday !" My daughter started crying. What a legend.
I've been at several Springsteen concerts, one in Dublin, one in London and two in the US. None of them ended on time, they all over ran way past their finish time. Talk about putting your heart into it!😊
Now THAT is the sign of a true star - someone who, no matter the plaudits, awards and riches, still remains humble enough as a man to appreciate the impact he can have on the life of another person.
Notice, as the story starts, many on the dais were saying a different version of, "You didn't do it, did you?" And that's why everyone today is so lonely and craving connection. Deep down, we want meaningful relationships but we're too terrified to engage the process or trust what life puts in our path. No, I won't sit with you. No, I won't pick up when you call. No, I won't actually accept your invitation. No, I won't share in what you're offering. I'm not saying people should naively get themselves into dangerous situations. But say YES every now and then.
I love your comments so much I would give it 10 stars! you are exactly right about describing how things are these days. We need more love between people and less fear.
Problem is that people are conditioned to actively fear strangers from an early age now and they grow up with that attitude. Didn't used to be like that. I'm 54 now, but when I was eight, I used to be able to ride my bike to the park or walk to the record store (both over a mile away) by myself. That fostered a feeling of independence and self reliance that I carry with me to this day. I still will start conversations with people I don't know and it has led to forming some fantastic friendships.
I worked as a hotel doorman one year and the Springsteens were regulars in the restaurant, so I often got the car for him. One day I called him Boss and caught myself and asked if it was okay to call him that. He asked my name and then used it and said "Sure, you can call me Boss." After that I always called him Boss and he always remembered my name when chatting with me.
My Bruce story is from 2008 and it happened in Vienna, Austria. Some fans and myself were at the stadium the day before the show and wanted to spend the whole night there to make it to the first row for the concert (I think this is different to the US. No lottery). In Vienna we were by far not as many people the day before as usual (I think maybe 15 people. In other cities in Europe I remember over a 100). In Vienna this was our luck probably. Around 9 or 10pm there was a van and all over sudden we realized that it is Bruce himself who got out of it. He came straight towards us, shaked our hands and just came to see who is crazy enough to spend two days in front of a stadium just for the show. He grabbed a piece of our pizza, sat down on the floor and spent some time with us. Talking, eating Pizza and playing the guitar one of the fans had brought for waiting time. He was so nice and totally normal. I will always be fan of his and will always love that man.
This is like how every fans dream of an interaction with their favorite celebrity will go. This may be the only example of it in the history of celebrity. Even if the celeb did continue the interaction for years, the fan would probably ruin it at some point by posting their interactions on social media or selling some to the tabloids. P.S. If I ever bump into David Spade, I hope he invites me over to his place to watch UFC with him and his comedy buddies.

And the woman on Bruce's left acted like he was from another planet when he simply was gracious to a fan and accepted his invitation. If that type of basic courtesy is that foreign to her, I'd hate to see how she acts when no one is watching.
I wouldn't call him an 80s rock star. He released his first album in 1973. He's beyond the 80s "rock star" persona you imply. He's also famously never done drugs and never drank until he was 22. Don't lump him in with the hair metal bands of the 80s (whom I also love).

Bruce continued to visit them whenever he was in St Louis for decades, and continued to visit the mum after the 'kid' sadly passed away. So it's probably Rolling Stone Magazine mixing it up 😊
Good story. He was always pretty loyal to his fans, though he charges way too much for tickets now. I only got to see him once, in the mid 1980's at the Orange Bowl in Miami, and he left it ALL on the stage. Born in the USA tour.
True, Bruce would be wary of the fan's motives now and wouldn't. He could have a real low key moment back then, but it would be unlikely now. The fan would likely post about it (and try to get photos and/or videos) all over social media.
