That's because it's more if an actual three act story with clear delineations between them.

The Road Warrior will never not be incredible. In my top three favorites.

It is a crime drama that tries to be as realistic as possible so it makes sense it is mostly just watching

Yeah it’s really an excellent film. This was an L take. Probably like a decade ago, when I hadn’t seen it yet, I was skeptical cause there are a lot of those films that don’t hold up, but from the minute The French Connection rolled and Hackman appeared in the Santa suit I was hooked.

The French Connection was the acceptable film to reward, because A Clockwork Orange was too damn wild and shocking for the Academy...even though it was obviously the most influential, and talked about movie of that year...Malcolm McDowell wasn't even nominated for Best Actor...

yup it really got cleaned up under guiliani, but in a way its going downhill again.
Yeah it captured what every other movie that was filmed in New York City in the 1970s did, truly unique

What's odd, though, is that it's only from 1971. NYC was declining but not the Death Wish/Taxi Driver world yet.
I love the French Connection. But the one thing that bugs me is when they take the car apart looking for the heroin then finally check the rocker panels. It seemed like the most obvious place in the world to hide it. It may as well have been in a bag in the trunk with Heroin written on it.
I didn't find any drugs in that car, I checked everywhere except the glove box
I love the 1983 film " Bad Boys" with Sean Penn where he goes to prison. The acting and the story is really good. It also has a very good pace leading up to a climactic ending. Even back then you can see what a great actor he would become.
That’s a pretty much an unnoticed gem. Seen it several times, stays fresh.
I first saw that film when I was 30. Call me a wuss, but it made my 14 year-old self never want to be anywhere near a prison
Dead Man Walking was better
The final showdown in Bad Boys is pretty epic.
The Falcon & The Snowman was impressive too. Sean Penn was great. At Close Range with actor Christopher Walken was a + drama too.
This was my Dad's exact reaction to rewatching _Bullitt._ Rented the DVD from Netflix and sat me down to watch it. He was trying for this father/son pizza and wings movie night bonding moment 😁 and for about an hour, we sat blankly staring at it in silence. Finally, my Dad says in his most Turd Ferguson moment: "Huh. Forgot how _boring_ this movie was." That made me burst out laughing. I said, "it's _alright._ " and he goes "no, it's terrible!" 😂
That was my reaction upon rewatching The Mothman Prophesy. I thought I loved it but nothing happens in the movie.
that's funny, i just rewatched bullitt a couple weeks ago. i ended up really liking it. the car chase scenes are well done, being set in san francisco helps distinguish it. and i liked the little character moments you got, like steve mcqueen picking up groceries from the supermarket, or stealing a paper. the score is really good too, sparse but good. unless you hate jazz. if you look up ant hates jazz i'm sure there's an old o&a clip of ant ragging on jazz music. anyways, i didn't find it all that dissimilar from early james bond movies, like dr no.

Bullitt is 30 minutes of investigation and talk interrupted by an awesome car chase. And then 30 more minutes of investigation, love story and talk until a 5 minute airport chase.
As far as cool Steve McQueen movies go, I like The Hunter way more than Bullitt.

I just love the fact that this guy came from tin knocking to a straight up respected king of his own show. God damn awesome guy, Anthony is.
As a beginner tin Knocker starting out at $8.00 an hour in 1999- 2000 while listening 102.7 for the first time on my way home every day was the best times. I'm still doing HVAC and I totally agree with you Ant is the TRUE Every American Man. He's a realist with a sense of humor that kills every time.

Im mid 30s from NZ, i live in america now: seeing old school gritty new york, un PC surly cops doing old school detective stakeout work following 70s cars around shitty harlem etc is cool in itself. @@DeathRiderDoom Mid 30s here too and I couldn't agree more about 1970s New York as a film setting. The city and everything that comes with it, is a character all it self when it's handled by talented film makers and Friedkin is undeniably one of them.

It's primitive, that's for sure, but that's how history takes its course. This movie influenced other films, films which mastered all the elements that made this film so great in the first place.
The French Connection totally holds up and Gene Hackman was a great actor.

@@vaevictis_ The flashbacks of young Vito’s rise to power were my favorite scenes in any movie, but they’re interspersed with Michael just brooding and destroying what’s left of his family. The airlock scene with the queen in aliens was stupid though.
Assault on Precinct 13 is one of the best 70s action movies. Understated, well-acted, great score, amazing, gritty cinematography. None of the actors are trying to win any awards, so it’s very down to earth. And the ice cream truck scene is still effective today
Agree 100%. John Carpenter is such a great filmmaker. Assault (1976), not the remake, is such a creepy film. Like u said, between the eerie score
gritty atmosphere, no movie stars, it really hits the mark.
The title reminds me of Brawl in Cell Block 99, which may be one of the best movies I've ever seen, for the exact same reasons you listed here. I've yet to recommend it to any dude who ended up disliking it. Chicks are a different story, the movie gets pretty brutal, but mine liked it so who knows.

Fort Apache the Bronx, Cruising, Prince of the City, there are a bunch of good cop movies from the 70's and early 80's that were pretty good. The car chase scene in French Connection was pretty good. Low T is off on this one.

Yes! Fort Apache: The Bronx. Great acting, storyline. Although Ken Wahl's sudden flip at the end of the movie is a little convenient.
I'd reccomended the Italian Connection. It's an Italian poliziotteschi movie that came out in 1972. It's about a pimp who's framed for stealing a lot of money from the American mob and is hunted by the Milanese mafia and two American assassins played by Woody Strode and Henry Silva. There's a great car chase, a gun fight in a junkyard and lots of pimp slapping. Definitely a 70s gem. More action.
People say birds was a good scary movie. But when I saw it I was laughing the entire time.

One of my favorite movies. Patience is a virtue, and stuff moved slower before video games and cellphones. Look at Taxi Driver...two hours of watching DeNiro go crazy for 5 mins of action at the end.
the scene where travis is talking and the camera pans over to the empty hall is still amazing and sad at the same time.
Popeye Doyle was a f***ing badass. French connection is one of my all time favorites.

I love it when you talk about old movies and being brutally honest about them.
I like the "French Connection". It's not an action movie. More of a Crime/Drama, as "The Godfather" is also. "Dirty Harry" holds up pretty good, but it's a Crime/Drama as well. Any Burt Reynolds or Steve McQueen movie moves along the same pace. That was just the way storytelling was done at the time. Movies like "Jaws" or "Cannonball Run" or even "Star Wars" were geared towards the crowd looking for action. I think Anthony just needed content to fill time.

I still think that the original Texas Chainsaw Massacre just might be the greatest horror film of all time. Anything relating to budgetary limitations somehow enhances the grittiness of it all, and there's moments where it feels like some psychos recording a snuff film.

CGI movies stink and I don't like 'em. Bring back animatronics with CGI only in conjunction with it used sparingly otherwise f off! That's what I say.
I used to work with an older hippie and he told me when he went to see it... People were running out of the theaters basically screaming. No one has ever seen violence on that level. And it's a masterpiece

Agreed. Joe Don Baker is a very under appreciated actor. Friends of Eddie Coyle is very good as well. Movies like these and French Connection are Time Capsules of a bygone area. I LOVE 70’s & 80’s Movies. That’s what I grew up on. Still prefer them to what’s out today.

The actor playing their police officer boss is Eddie Egan. He was the real Popeye Doyle. Also, the FBI Agent he fights with is Bill Hickman. He was the stunt driver who did the car chase scene in this movie, and also in Bullitt.

Friedkin was still an industry and culture changing director, even without "The Exorcist". "To Live And Die In L.A." is a masterpiece, and has influenced every cop drama and to some extent all suspense, clock-based movies to this day. Love Ant. But he has a very hoi polloi view of filmmaking, when it comes to director's younger work. *RIP William Friedkin*

Back then there was not much else to compare things to, so anything new that got people gripping the armrests in a movie theater was enough to nominate it. I heard that the very first movie that showed a locomotive pulling into a station made people in the theater scream out loud, because they thought it was going to burst through the screen and into the theatre

The French Connection is fantastic! But I didn't realize how correct Ant would be about the movie poster / box cover! It's like the Planet of the Apes cover where the Statue of Liberty is in the background.
It's what police work actually is all about. Waiting and watching, Dennis Farrina said that's why The French Connection is the best police movie around.
Love the French Connection, not an action packed thriller no. But still a very good film. Put it this way, I'd rather watch that than the endless Marvel and Star Wars trash, eurghhh. By the way, Night Moves from 1975 with Hackman is outstanding. Watch out for a very young James Woods in that one.
The yelling Gene Hackman drive scene reminded me of the chase scene in blues Brothers....
The deer hunter sucks too but there's two scenes that are so good that they actually get ur adrenaline going but the rest is just the drizzling shits

Uhhmm. The French Connection is not really an action movie. It’s more of a crime/noir film. It’s a slow burn. It’s not supposed to be like ffuckking Lethal Weapon.

It is always upsetting when you watch a movie that you used to absolutely adore but for one reason or another it doesn't hold up and you realise the movie in your head is way better. On the other hand some films are just as great now and give you the same feelings they gave you when they came out, Jurassic Park for example.
Terminator 2 is still an awesome movie and still one of my favourite movies ever but some of the special effects look dated and do not look as good as what I remembered. Again Jurassic Park still looks amazing even to this day and still has some of the greatest special effects/CGI, which no movie has been able to better. It had the perfect balance of CGI and puppets/animatronics, unlike today's films which usually contain only CGI. Nowadays even explosions and in some cases things like brick walls are created using CGI.
Anthony is awesome and continues to be a breath of fresh air in today's awful phony faux offended society. I like when he isn't getting caught up with politics and when he is discussing other things like movies. But to be fair to him today's culture brings politics into just about anything and everything so you can't really avoid bringing it up no matter what subject you are talking about. If more "celebrities" were as honest and sincere as Anthony then the world would be a lot more tolerable. Even if you don't agree with all of his views and opinions at least he is honest and says exactly what he really believes without having any agendas or without trying to stay within the ever decreasing confines of what is and what it not acceptable. He basically doesn't give a f*ck if you like him or not but is willing to discuss and debate. Which is unfortunately rare nowadays.

Means streets was an amazing film, Anthony, Jimmy all those guys love it. You just have to have real life experience to relate to it. But if you’re looking for CGI explosions I guess you wouldn’t like it.
People are really missing out when they skip over the 40s & 50s era movies, of all genres. Go to any number of classic movie channels & you'll be blown away at the storyline & writing skills AND subject matter- pretty much everything is addressed. It's obvious which are sheer propaganda too. But you'll find dozens of great movies no one ever heard of. They aren't as gore filled obviously but the implications are there.
Come on, Ant, did you even watch it? That is one of, if not THE best chase scenes of all time.

He just said he thought the Pentagon would be more secure. But we were caught with our pants down what do you want, the US government had fake terrorist attacks called in almost daily are they supposed to believe every single one?
So why don’t you tell me your theories like a big boy? Controlled demolition or dust weapons from outer space? They recovered all four planes at each crash site as well as all the passengers DNA, all the air traffic control records show where the planes crash, and you had blackbox recordings and phone calls to love ones. Not sure whatever evidence you need. Some people just don’t make good detectives what can I say. Especially with the evidence on the table

The Warriors (1979) was based on the Sol Yurick (1965) novel of the same name. Which in turn, was inspired by the historical Xenophon's Anabasis. Although, both the movie and novel share the same basic plot. There are still several differences between the book and film. Including the names and costumes of the multitude of gangs and its depiction of women. One key difference is that the central characters of the novel is an African American/Hispanic gang known as the Coney Island Dominators. Unlike like their cinematic counterparts. The Coney Island Dominators were depicted more like an actual street gang and not like comic book heroes.
The 70’s movies unlike the .50’s were gritty and based in reality. You can see Doyle and Russo as real NYC detectives who stumbled upon this and are working it and that’s what this is about. I like the scenes when they are

NY subway was NOT safer in the 70's! Come on Ant. NY between 1970 and 1995 was like Beirut. It was fun, but crime was insane and nobody cleaned anything.

I CANNOT believe you mentioned Cinema 100. Nobody I know ever seems to remember the folding guides. You'd get a new one every month, and a different color. You'd have to switch to the channel and wait for the movie to come on. Youd see the lineup for the day on a bottom crawl up until movie time. I'm from Huntington, Long Island. In time I think Heat will stand up as rewatchable in 50 years as it is now. I mean it's 25 years old already and it is still one of the slickest movies ever in terms of presentation. I can't think of anything that timeless.
In terms of 70s stuff, obviously the Godfather I and II, Taxi Driver and Jaws...but a LOT of the others either haven't aged well or don't suit rewatches. Dog Day Afternoon is also great yet oft forgotten.

Taxi Driver is overrated and Dog Day Afternoon was terrible. Poorly directed, weird casting, infantile script and so over-acted.

Just saw Gangs of New York for the first time. Should've seen it a while ago I know, but the point is, it's crazy to see how a city as huge and sprawling as NYC evolves and where its roots were sewn
During the lockdown, I saw Thief for the first time ever. I loved it. I re-watched the French Connection too. It's not an action movie. It's a good movie that depicts the era very accurately.
Thief is great. Great score too.
The car chase in FC ruled. The rest, much like Bullit, kind of meandered but it's good if you can get into the right frame of mind. Definitely a different time and style of filmmaking.

That car chase scene, supposedly, one of the crashes (I think it’s a white car coming across) wasn’t intended. It was a real accident.
