    THE SECRET TO MOISTURIZING HIGH POROSITY HAIR
    Porosity is the hair's ability to absorb and retain moisture. High porosity hair absorbs moisturizer quickly but releases it just as quickly so it is difficult for high porosity hair to retain moisture Creamy and butter based moisturizers are the best for high porosity hair. Sealing in moisture is also recommended for high porosity hair. Hair can become porous from chemicals, dyes, heat, and high manipulation styling.

    Hello, Mrs. Karen and I have high porosity hair and I have been using Cantu products since my hair started growing back from having breast cancer twice and I use Palmers hair and scalp oil with Biotin and vitamin E and olive oil and castor oil and carrot oil mixture. My hair has grown down to my ear lobe now and it is growing well. I am still on cancer medication also.

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      HI JLJ! Most leave-ins can have up to 90% water or more, so the concentration of oil is minimal. I am very familiar with DE products and I'm pretty certain the oil concentration is low. So you can still seal after moisturizing the hair. Now generally speaking -- if it ain't broke don't fix it. If you know and implement your moisture cycle, and the products are you using are giving you great results -- keep on keeping on! ✊🏾

    Hi Ms Karen my question is does the porosity change as the hair turns grey? I ask because my hair doesn't take but 2-3 minutes to get wet by takes about 4-5 hours to dry. I've tried the float test and the hair sits on top forever and on the spray test I don't see any water sitting on my hair. I'm so for being annoying but my hair doesn't retain moisture and is always frizzy so I don't go anywhere without covering it up. Thanks hope you can help 🙏❤

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Generally speaking -- gray hair is high porosity, or then you could have both low and high porosity hair like me -- I have salt and pepper hair. Float tests are not scientific per se, but they are used as a gauge to determine porosity. Float tests are also best on clean hair as opposed to hair with product buildup. But based upon what you said about the frizziness and dry time, it probably is more high porosity. Don't know if you've ever colored your gray hair -- but if you did then you may have noticed that the color didn't last as long. So many of my clients would complain that the color doesn't last as long -- its because it is released from the strand much quicker because its very porous. But regardless -- I want you to try what I suggested in the video -- try sealing with a thicker oil or hair butter. I just released a video on wash n go and sealing with shea butter -- you should check it out if you haven't.
      I am also working on a video that's all about no styling product -- just moisturizer and oil. I think that will help you as well.

    Just stumbled across your channel! I am genetically high porosity and am trying to understand the balance b/t how often I should re-moisturize during the week vs just re-washing or co-washing to replenish moisture. How do you feel about co-washing generally (midweek not as a replacement for shampoo)?

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  ปีที่แล้ว +7

      Hello there and welcome to my channel. Most co-washes on the market today have a mild surfactant in them, so I am no longer opposed to me to way I once was. So yes -- co-washing mid week is just fine. And like you said, as long as it does not replace your regular shampoo I think you will be good to go! Especially if you use heavier type butters or oils in your hair, you will certainly need a shampoo to remove at some point. Hope this helps...

    Thank you for this explanation. I just did a big chop where i shaved off all of my hair because it wasn’t growing. I wanna say that I do have high porosity hair because i over use products that have different kinds of ingredients that I use on my hair, as well as washing it with hot water and using different types of shampoos/ conditioner. As well as blowdrying and combing it everyday. I believe that is what caused me to have high hair porosity because I’m an impatient person and I don’t know what my hair likes. I want to be able to use natural products. Or would it be best to not be any products on my hair? Right now my hair is shaved so should I wait until it starts to grow out?

      Bases upon what you described you were doing to your hair it certainly sound like it could be high porosity, but since you are regrowing it back eventually, try to minimize the blow drying and frequent manipulation and try the porosity test again to determine if it is in fact high porosity. • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +9

      Hi Lynell! The main ingredient in hair grease is petrolatum. Its very thick and heavy, and can be ideal for high porosity hair when used as a sealant. It seals moisture while at the same time blocking out external moisture (so your hair won't shrink as much in humid conditions). And I recently learned that it is also non-comedogenic, so that means it won't clog your pores either. But for ME, because its so heavy its doesn't compliment my styling products or my hair! LOL! From one Karen to another, this video was amazing! I’ve been using super thick creams on my hair as I intuitively knew it was better for my hair. I haven’t been using oil though. Thank you for the suggestion!

      Hey Karen!!! 😉 So glad you now know why creams are better!! Many creams already have butters or oils in them, so you don't necessary have to add if what you are using has been working. If it ain't broke don't fix it! But if there is room for improvement, go for it!

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes you can! Everyone hair is different, and you have to figure out what works best for you. Everyone has a 'moisture cycle' -- some moisturize daily, every other day, 2x a week. It just depends on your hair. Check out this video if you haven't already -- th-cam.com/video/g8nAxafl11Q/w-d-xo.html

    • @KarenofCurlHouse

      Hey there! You can apply immediately after applying your cream, or moisturizer. They will touch but remember, oil doesn't necessary mix with water so it will stay relatively 'separate' from the moisturizer (generally speaker).

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there! It all depends on why its high porosity -- so if you color, use a lot of heat, or manipulate your hair alot, then absolutely cut it and regrow it. But if it's gray or even genetic, then no.

    Hi I enjoy your channel and respect your opinion on afro hair. I recently watched a video by Natural Nadine she states that most African American hair is high porosity by nature, when a lot of us are thinking our hair is low porosity (if it hasn't been relaxed or color treated). She references crime scene investigations where police can determine the race of a suspect based on their hair noting that most African American hair has raised cuticles ( high porsity). Please comment on this and tell me your opinion. Thank You! P.S. - I think this topic would make a great video.

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  2 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      Hey Tracy! So sorry about the late response. But thank you for asking my opinion. I do not agree with this assessment. I don't really understand the crime scene investigation reference, as anyone of any race or any ethnicity can have high porosity hair (either due to genetics, damage or environmental factors), so not sure why AA would automatically be the determining race in an investigation -- but honestly, that's not my lane, so let me slide back into my lane! LOL. Now as a cosmologist, I have had my hands in thousands (literally) of hair shafts over the years -- and the porosity of each is different. Some hair takes a long time to wet (low); while others just suck up water as soon as I wet it (high); Some hair takes a long time to dry after wetting (low) while others dry quickly after wetting (high); some tangles easily and others do not, etc. It's just so so many different factors to consider with porosity levels. Now I can say this, I think we tend to put a lot of emphasis on low vs high, and forget that there is medium porosity, and low vs high is a BIG RANGE! I think some people are HIGH when they are really LOW and vice versa. Sometimes it's hard to determine porosity based on the float test, strand test --- as these are not scientifically based. But you can based on characteristics. I think I will do a video on this. Thank you for the video recommendation -- I will try to explain porosity so that people are crystal clear. Thanks again!! The video is on my list!!!

    WOW....that really helped me a lot. I gave you the side-eye when you started out with a sponge in your hand, but rapidly became intrigued and realized how much it was helping. LOL...thank you. I have a feeling you may not see this comment, but in case you do, I "think" I have normal to high porosity hair. What does it mean when I apply a "daily moisturizer" (by Design Essentials) on dry hair and my hands feels gummy? I have watched so many of these videos until I am not sure of my opinion.

    • @KarenofCurlHouse
      @KarenofCurlHouse  ปีที่แล้ว

      Hello there! Design Essentials Daily Moisturizing Lotion has a high concentration of glycerin (which is very gooey by itself). So when you apply 'too much' your hair can very heavy and gummy. So 'too much' for some is just right for others! The moisturizer is layered on your hair and its just product buildup, so I would suggest you use it every other day, as everyday may be too heavy. I use this moisturizer and I am very familiar with the 'gummy' feel to it.

    • @contentat45able
      @contentat45able ปีที่แล้ว

      @@KarenofCurlHouse, thank you for responding to my question. I saw your video and wrote your comment after applying that moisturizer to my hair. However, the next day, I hair was dry without the gummy feel. So then I applied it during my morning routine which includes water first.

      @@KarenofCurlHouse Thanks so much. My hair is very high priosity and thick - 4b hair type. I have been natural for 8 years, and wanting to try to work with my hair to grow it past neck length. Yesterday I shampooed, cleansed with an Apple Cider Vinegar rinse, deep conditioned, and performed the LOC method and put it in 4 braids to the back to air dry, and slept with a silk bonnet on. To add, I used all KeraCare products- Humecto Conditioner. However, I notice the Dr. Miracle's Strong & Healthy Hydrating & Strengthening Deep Conditioner works best, but ran out. Today my hair is back hard and dry, after all the work and time I put into it. This is the first time I am nurturing my hair after much neglect from weaves, but at this rate it l am discouraged that I don't have the kind of hair that can be tamed. It seems like I am going to have to perform the LOC and moisturize and seal my scalp daily.
