Port & Polish GM 5.3 Throttle Body

  • I've been porting and polishing throttle bodies for a while and thought I'd share with the DIY people. I'm using a throttle body off of a 2005 silverado with a 5.3 motor. Of all the truck brands, GM has the largest gains by doing this. I've also ported and polished TB's on the 5.7 Toyota Tundra, the 4.7 Dodge, LS1 Corvette, and the Honda 4cly from a Civic Si. Every time it has proved that this mod will improve your throttle response and most vehicles MPG's improve 0.5-2 mpg. That may not sound like a lot, but do the math next time you fill up!
    Sorry if the video upload is poor. No wifi connection to my phone today :(

    Cleaned my 99 lm7 5.3 3 bolt TB once and an air passage had a cobweb / spider nest in it. Was baffled how a spider got in there. Was down in lower square shape passage. I thought wtf.. cleaned it with carb cleaner and a toothbrush. Was having idle rpm fluctuations from 500-1000 rpm when hot. New TPS sensor and a good scrub cured it.

    If you do all i mention you would feel it. Certainly see gains on a dyno individually grinding i cant imagine improving flow

    Not sure if you're still replying after all these years, but a couple questions... Alot of GMs have 'crosshair' patterning on the throttle plate, this is the first smooth one I've seen. What year and model is this 5.3 from? Wouldn't smooth be better in theory? Also, wouldn't carefully thinning down the round centerpiece that holds the throttle plate be advantageous, especially at full throttle? Or do you suppose that would be too risky for the amount of benefit?

      Also, if I remember the TB in the video I made was from a 2006 or 2007 Silverado

    Better do something about the delay in the electronics for the gas petal if you're gonna go through the trouble to port the throttle body.

    You would want to match the
    Gaskets
    Intake
    EXHAUST
    Hell even the cylinder ports might as well xgo big valves

    How do you reprogram the computer to relearn the throttle position once you have manually opened the throttle plate?

  • @SDyacht
    @SDyacht  11 ปีที่แล้ว

    The butterfly is not supposed to close all the way when disconnected. Also there is a prms fuse you should have pulled prior to disconnecting the tb. Just drive it for about 10 miles to let the computer reset itself. Just be very careful because the engine rpm's will want to pull you forward. Not recommended if you have any snow or ice on the ground and plan your stop lights in advance.

      SDyacht where is this fuse located? Under the hood or inside the truck?

    Hey I have a issue with my throttle. I took it all apart and cleaned all the heavy black. Build. Up. And then when I reinstalled. It all my butterfly. Plate. Doesn't. Shut. Properly. Doesn't set. Right. And my idle u higher now. Then the computer looks for idle rpms. I'm guessing and can't find consistency so surges up and down. I think I flipped I t t he wrong direction. When reinstalling. Any. Advice before. I go back and flip it tomorrow?

    Couple questions, what was your method to cleaning the butterfly? and what type of paint did you use to paint this throttle body?

      Hi Edgar, Sorry I'm just now responding to you. I started a new job in an office as an engineer and I'm no longer working as a mechanic out of a shop. If you were here in San Diego, I could work out a day with you, but if shipping is involved, I have too much going on right now to add more commitments. There is a guy I've spoke with and emailed a few times who is on the east coast who also does this. He mostly does just the TB's for the Colorado's and canyons, but he might do one for you. You can search and find him on 355nation.net. Or you can do it yourself if you have a dremel tool. It'll take you longer, but when you're learning, going slower is safer.

      You should be fine. I recommend to anyone that if you think you might be getting close in an area that might cut through, that you reinforce those areas with JB Weld in advance to cutting and polishing. Easier to cut into cured JB Weld than it is to cut a hole, patch it and then try to continue where you left off...

  • @SDyacht
    @SDyacht  11 ปีที่แล้ว +3

    No reprogramming required. After installing, your idle will be high for about 10 min then the MAF, MAP and O2 sensors will automatically adjust. You must also remove the PCMB fuse before removing and install it last after everything is re installed.

      @JustAGuy781 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      That is false! It depends on a few things actually. If you have a vehicle that is not able to drive legally down the road then yes it will need to be reprogrammed via scanner. If you can drive it then there are a couple of methods you can use, but rarely does it just relearn itself.

    Wow that looked professionally done good stuff man, just curious how it felt different than the GMC felt before the port polish because I have a 2007 GMC Sierra and might be interested in giving this a try.

    hey man, great job with the port & polish. going to be doing a cam swap and an afm delete on my 09 silverado and will definitely have your video pulled up while i do my TB port haha! hey did you have any problem with the ecm not reading the throttle body correctly since you were opening and closing the butterfly by hand?

    • @SDyacht
      @SDyacht  9 ปีที่แล้ว +4

      You would have to send me yours. I tried keeping some stocked, but the demand is not high enough to make it wort my time. And I was stealing business from a guy on the east coast who made it his mission to trash talk me for only charging 1/3 of what he was charging... In "his" defense, he did made the effort to spend money to take his truck to a Dyno to prove his numbers. My proof is in the seat of your pants! Just as verifiable as all other results, but I didn't waste my time talking sh!t in web forums. Just like the dilbert who was saying I have no verifiable results by claiming he has dozens of satisfied customers, so do I. If I had a personal Dyno, I could perfect my P&P, but than I'd have to charge more.. This conclude my longest response that I've ever given to criticism. *not worth my time to talk crap*

    What gains? I've heard this doesn't do shit.

    • @joekearns7295
      @joekearns7295 10 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Then you've heard wrong. However it does affect different vehicles differently depending on the size of the motor, the factory design of the throttle body. There are plenty of variables that all play a factor. In this particular video, I am doing a GM 5.3 TB, and it makes a HUGE difference with this motor :)

    • @VegasJPH
      @VegasJPH 10 ปีที่แล้ว

      Joe Kearns my Sierra has the 5.3l
      Still, many on GM forums have said this doesn't really give you much. What does it give? Quicker response?

    • @lm0315
      @lm0315 8 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      No, porting and polishing, be it on a TB or a head or an intake are all about adding more air into the system. The more air you get the leaner your A/F mixture which results in your FI system adding more fuel to get it back to the correct A/F ratio. This all results in more power.
      This is the general theory behind porting and polishing. But like Joe said, it varies with every setup.

      @griffon3275 7 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      the gains for this is more felt when the tune is also modified. on a GM truck you actually get more seat of the pants feel from changing the shift points in the transmission then you do from changing the engine tune when it is pretty much stock. GM stock tune on automatic trucks is where they limit the power and torque to keep warranty on drive train issues down. by changing the shift points you also extend the life of your transmission.
