Minecraft is full of blocks, some obtainable in creative, some only through commands, and some only placeable not holdable. Most experienced players are familiar with most if not all of these blocks. But there is one block, that is truly mysterious, that only a small percentage of people have ever heard of. Ok the title is kind of misleading, it is not, in fact, a mystery nor an unsolved mystery, but in today's video we will be going over perhaps Minecraft's most unknown block, and it's strange and wonderful abilities.

I remember this being the "block 36" in 1.7 when block IDs were a thing, and then no one was able to summon it in once IDs were removed because we didn't know the name of the block.

I’ve seen it in parkour maps. I think it’s just used to keep things from going OOB.

Carpet blocks, when walked on, play the sound of the block below them. Since you can place carpet on anything (incl. water, lava, and moving pistons) it is possible to hear the walking sound of any block.

They're called Phantom blocks, and a are a bug . The ghost block is a feature.
@@epsilon1563 First of all I've only ever heard of those glitches(client side and server side desync) as referred to as ghost blocks.
Secondly, the block is called the moving piston, or by some as block 36, this is the first time I've ever heard of ghost block being used in this context.

I remember back on 1.7 or so, when block 36 was all the rage and you could find videos on the topic a dime a dozen. There was this one about a castle built entirely with flowing water that used b36 to stop the waterflow.
A piston bug can create floating water/lava/sand. Have an extended sticky piston with two slime blocks in front and sand on top of the arm, then obsidian preventing the slime blocks from retracting. Then retract the piston.
The moving piston block (used to be block 36) got used for all sorts of mapmaking shenanigans before command blocks and other modern in-game tools existed.
Dream's fantasy is a goldmine for TH-cam creators.

There’s a difference between the ghost block, a discrepancy between clients and servers, and block 36 (moving piston is another name)
Maxwell Wiesenfeld technically, the “formal” name (the name Minecraft calls it) is “piston extension”
VIBaJ 16 before 1.13, when block ids where in the game the “technical” name was block 36, the block id. But yes, after 1.12 the name is piston extension.
Ghost block is just a name that can refer to anything. Most of my friends call the client-only lagged block-update blocks *phantom* blocks.
Fun fact: In bedrock there is a “light” block that is invisible, does nothing, cannot be destroyed, and allows blocks to be placed in it. It is actually placeable through an item form as well.

Wifies about the footstep sound, if you stand on another block next to the piston extension block and walk while very close to the edge (so you are over the piston extension) test to see if it makes walking on stone sound, b/c I know this works for other blocks

Fun fact: back then, around 1.7, you could interact with the block. Right click and it disappears! This could be used to make interact commands and custom blocks. The creator of The Code III made an upside down chest using this method!

@@LittleLivre The moving piston 0 blast resistance property is used in tnt blast chambers by timing the pistons to push right as the tnt explodes. This explodes all the pushed blocks as if they have blast resistance 0.

honestly I was a little disappointed that I actually had heard of this, but it's still wonderful to have a video on it! I hadn't yet looked into its properties. Then again. I used to be fairly into technical minecraft, so it's always a gamble even with the really obscure stuff.

You demonstrated that it can be destroyed by TnT. Meaning that even in survival mode, there should be a brief period in which a piston is extending that if you get a TNT to detonate in that narrow timeframe, you would have destroyed the moving piston block.
I wonder what does happen in that circumstance. Would that delete the block being pushed by the piston and prevent it from being dropped as an item like it normally would if the block was destroyed by TNT?

It stores the information of the block that was moving so it just dropps the item, people use this to optimize blast chambres since the block has a blast resistance of 0

Ghost block - basically a barrier block with no border. simple, video done

The stone noise in Minecraft is the default block noise. Before 1.20, There was a bug that made it so if you walk on the very edge of a full block, it will always play the stone noise.
More cool blocks: Extended piston without the head (obtainable by same-tick explosion that blows up the moving block for the piston head but not the base)
- A block that is considered stone by the client and fire by the server. The player will hit the stone and take fall damage, any other entities will hit the fire.
- A block that is air to the client but stone to the server cannot be left-clicked to break. Placing a block on it will update it and make the server and client agree. Standing on it creates a jittery effect.
- Old block id 64 is the april fool's locked chest.
- In various pre-flattening versions, cake, melons, and pumpkins with growth/eating values of over 8 will cause other textures to appear, taken from after them in the texture files.
Cool items: Bugged lapis lazuli ore item (1.12.2) obtained by dropping a lapis lazuli ore falling block on a torch.
There are old item ids for powered redstone and lit redstone lamps, which can cause crashes in certain versions

A plug-in for Minecraft Pocket Edition called Plug PE used to allow players to obtain these blocks so I’ve seen them before, but I haven’t seen this in a long time so thanks for nostalgia! :)
I was playing some HCF few days ago and was making trap with pistons, then all of a sudden ther was 1 block of air which i couldnt place anything in nor push block in with piston.

It's crazy that block 36 was added with the first addition of pistons in Beta 1.7 and all these years later it still exists and does all the same weird tricks and quirks when placed outside of the context of a moving piston

The most useful feature of this block is its blast resistance of 0 which makes it so that you can have better optimized blast chambres for farms

I knew it. I discovered it once while playing around with commands in pocket edition.
About footsteps, you can make footsteps when jumping through blocks. Torches and sugar cane both make different noises from what they're placed on. Just jumping and moving around them shows this.
Totally forgot about that block! Back in the day way before barriers and commands were a thing many people used these to create fountain's and stuff with them

This used to be called block 36, it has it's uses in survival as it's blast resistance is 0. This means that if you use pistons to push blocks tick perfect to a tnt explosion you can destroy the most about of blocks possible, endstone is equal to dirt. In the past it was more useful as now blocks drop 100% of the time when exploded with tnt, but they used to drop 1/p, and if p was 0, it would be 100%.
About footsteps on a ghost block: try placing torch on a stone platform and walking and jumping around it, you will actually hear walking on wood sound, which occurs when "walking" on torch. Now just try placing moving piston block on a non-stone material platform (grass block, for example) and start jumping around it. You'll start actually hearing walking on stone sounds. Or, to make it even easier, put two rows of blocks next to each other - any wooden blocks and moving piston block. Now jump on wooden path and align yourself on the edge of it where the MPB is located. Now just walk on the edge of that block, you'll hear, again, stone walking sounds because the steps material depends on the block your center is located on.

The sound you make while walking is calculated by the block directly below your center axis, so it is entirely possible to "walk" on a transparent block. A good example of this is jumping over torches (playing a wood sound for the torch) or sneaking on an edge next to lanterns (playing a lantern sound even though you are not set on top of the lantern, it is technically the block directly below)

7:09 if you walk right on the edge of a block, with the moving piston underneath your feet (not walking through it, but straight on it without falling in it by using the edge of another block for collision), you can in fact hear the sound

You missed something really special about this block: sand.
Try making sand fall to this block. It won't place the sand neither destroy the sand (as a pressure plate would do). You would remain with a "falling sand" entity in the ground.
Mix this with the command to summon custom falling sand, and you can make some really good shit.
speaking of sand, in the legacy edition of Minecraft, placing 20 sand blocks a few blocks above a fence will cause the sand to enter an endless state of falling. this will cause any other blocks that can be affected by gravity to float when placed in the air.
