I remember the time on servers where if let’s say you are in a big box where you can’t place blocks, you would go to the wall, jump and then place blocks against the wall below you. Then the server would tell the client that you can’t place that block there. But if you managed to jump on that block before it got removed you could just climb walls like a spider.

What’s so cool about it is I only get stuck on chunks that look like they don’t belong, for example I will be on a island and I will see a chunk that looks like a part of the lobby. It’s super weird and is usually fixed with /hub or something similar.
you can also make air ghost blocks with a repeating command block with a fill command with stone and a pickaxe with like efficiency 255 or something. first hold anything but a pickaxe. then immediately swap to your efficiency pickaxe and break the stone. the only real thing I can think of is to open a chest on the other side tho
In 1.18, if you placed a Lilly pad while quickly moving your mouse, 2 Lillie-pads would be placed, however 1 was a ghost block. It was really easy to create them

Now that you also explained the other kind of ghost block, I realised that I also know them from another Server. And you can also make it look like you are flying there because you can (kinda) place on with a command. Well actually it places a beacon as a marker that only you can see and walk on, but no one else. So I guess it's that kind of ghost block. But luckily you don't get banned for it (as long as you are not flying more than 2 blocks above the ground and move. Then it's probably an exploit). Oh yeah and that also happens often it you use world edit on a server.

It can take some practice but if you get it right the piston should extend both upwards and sideways. After that just break the piston base and you should have a disembodied piston head that is only visible to your client.
There is a funny way to do this in bedrock servers where sometimes if u shift click a block on a trapdoor it makes a ghost blocks that you can stand on while other players try to get on it and keep falling through even tho its not there for them

in bedrock you can get a ghost block by flying in creative then crouching (you should go down) then click the block (blocks has to be a block which adds an inventory like a dispenser, crafting table) then you have a ghost block
client side blocks is possible if you make a plugin for spigot/paper Player#sendBlockChange(Location loc, Material material, byte data) this is from the documentation btw
One time I tried to make a flying machine but the piston kept pushing so when I broke all of it a honey block was left, it was treated like air but I fixed it by pushing a slime block in the honey block with a piston.
You guys need to play hypixel skyblock. Dungeons IS ghost blocks. like not intentional. Literally peoplehave found methods to fastly intentionally make ghost blocks to get chests through walls
