Hi John. Great video and I used the same tools to sharpen my chisels. Works really well. Three additional things I learnt: 1. Even inexpensive chisels that are sharpened properly are razor sharp, 2). Soft wood can absorb volumes of blood, 3). Every workshop should have a first aid kit!
The best sharpening video I’ve seen, thanks! I’ve just bought a new No 4 and need to set it up. Please could you list the grits you use for 1. Flattening the back of the blade and 2. Sharpening. Thanks!
Hi John, great videos really enjoying them and don’t think I’m being picky or trolling at all. My Grandad always told me when I was a kid to never put a plane down on its bed and to always rest it on its side. Your sharpen video was great and you took all the care to get it perfect, not touching the edge as you put the plane back together and then laid it on the bed..I would have got a clip around the ear if I had done that 😳. I’m not clipping you around the ear as you are a far more accomplished wood worker than I my friend and carry on producing the great content. Love the channel. 😁
Thank you for putting out this video. I've been trying to flatten the entire back and not very successful. I have the DM diamond plates. I have tried everything with no luck. I'm going to try the masking tape and see how that trick goes. Thanks again.
If you want to upgrade your Record Power sharpening system, rather than spending a hundred quid on a diamond wheel consider a Robert Sorby ProEdge, fantastic machine and it grinds flat not hollow like any grinding wheel system. I still hand sharpen on a diamond stone day to day but the ProEdge gets used for changing bevels and turning tools and it works so well it is unbelievable, leaves things like the Record Power and Tomek for dead.
Really interesting John thanks. I just looked into buying such a system plus a clifton 5 jackplane. The import tax would cost me an extra 109,00 euros, nearly had a heart attack, I think I will have to find somewhere over here that has good planes and have them in stock.
Great video, John! Interesting how you hold your blade when you sharpen. Right-hand on the top of the blade and left hand around the underside of the blade cradling your right. At least, the first time you showed sharpening that’s what it looked like you were doing. I like the scary-sharp system. I used to use sandpaper (wet/dry for auto body-work) on some pieces of granite from a friend’s broken countertop. Same idea, but even cheaper as my distraught friend gave me the granite!! ;). I did eventually upgrade to diamond as I was able to catch some sales on the diamond plates. I think, though, really, it’s not an “upgrade” as the scary sharp is absolutely a fine way to get a sharp edge!
Nice video. That’s a neat system. As Paul Sellers says tho - the most important thing is for your sharpening tool to not be locked away but instead be handy so it gets used. Maybe a future project video might be to make a wooden case/holder to set the glass into... like a cutting board or swivel-top pencil case but bigger. You’re getting so slick at this you tube stuff I’m glad to see your subscriber count rise as well. Picking a fight with Peter Parfitt was great business! 😀
Pretty interesting, John! Thanks for all the tips! 😃 I already bought the sandpaper I could find here in Brazil, but I still need the glass. Could you tell me the size of yours? Stay safe there with your family! 🖖😊
Hey John, I just got a system like this and am having trouble getting my blades sharp for the first time. I have been trying to do the primary bevel using a honing guide on the paper. Is it essential to get a grinder to do this instead, or am I doing something wrong?
You can set a primary bevel with a similar system it can just take time, one thing you can try is colour the bevel with a marker and check where you are removing material from. Insure you are removing material all the way to the edge and have a burr forming on the back of the blade edge to edge.
I'm currently using a 400/1000 diamond stone. Have you used a diamond stone previously and how would you rate it with scary sharp ? Do you find it better in all 3 respects (cost, speed, edge) ?
I have a 400/1000 grit diamond plate, it's an inexpensive one the 3m finishing film is better. Now I'm not saying its better the the more expensive diamond plates
Just about to buy the scary sharp system from workshop heaven. Also I need to reset the primary bevel. You mentioned upgrading it. Have you done that research yet? What are you going to buy? Is it an upgrade to the record power grinder or a new system?
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed I think he's talking about the Charlesworth method of having a cambered blade, but I'm guessing. Nice video John, I hadn't thought of using scary sharp freehand I'll give it a go. Thanks 👍. Regards Jim

Cabinet looks amazing in the background John
enjoying your videos, also enjoying the frequency of new content
I've struggled with this so much. Thank you John for explaining this so well and patiently.
No problem 👍

Great stuff , John. Your a talented teacher and woodworker.
Very kind of you Mick, I'm just a hobbyist sharing what I'm doing.
Just wanted to search for a sharpening video and saw you in the notification window, perfect timing!
Hope you enjoyed it!
@@JohnMcGrathManInShed absolutely, loved it!

I guess i was waiting for this video. Thanks🙂
You're welcome!
Hand sharpening and honing to maintain sharpness definitely is the way to go. Good gear, too. Well done!
Absolutely!
Well done John, super skills !!!

Fine tools are in Germany, they do all the hand tools

I can't fit my two hands on the smaller blades so I just feels more natural to hold it like that

I'd have thought the 'tilt up' is easy to vary too much from strip to strip?
dude you rock! thanks for this.
No problem hope it helps!
Could you still use a honing guide on this system?
Yeah no problem I did

@@JohnMcGrathManInShed thanks for the help! I enjoy your videos, they have helped me learn a lot
Would this work for pocket knives? Or would it be too hard since they are curved?
the tape would work but maybe not the large glass plate

Ever try sharpening knifes on this
I'm not sure the tape on the wide piece of glass would make it easy, but the tape itself on smaller flat surfaces would put a serious edge on a knife
Well John, how's it going? How much use do you get from your router plane? Is it worth it?
The Flat Earther's are going to have a wah about your video sham! Ha ha ha ha
yeah when you need it its fantastic, I just depends how often and how much hand tool woodworking you are planning to do

I'm looking at fitting a tormek diamond wheel
Sorby pro edge for me. More expensive but much much quicker.
get me students to sharpen for themselves after this lol, 3 bevels lol..thats where gillette started loosing the plot..up to 5 blades now
There's no curvature ;-)
🤣
