To me at least it’s still about an 8/10. It’s hard for me to like the classic sonic games that much, since those were not my introduction to sonic AT ALL.
Editing is fire as usual dude, and love how you handled the aspect ratio being 4:3. While I love Sonic 3 being one of my top 3 Sonic games, I do agree with your criticism of the exploration not being handled well, like you pretty much have to search up the locations and learn to remember them which is what I did, doesn’t solve the issue which is a downside, especially moving the spikes in flying battery, like how does anyone figure that out. You cooked GDub glad you learned to love a Peak sonic game in your own way

I wish I could learn to love Sonic 3K. I don't understand how people think it's better besides the story if anything. Sonic 2 has decent level design (until Metropolis) the whole way through. But- Marble Garden, Carnival Night, Mushroom Hill, Sandopolis, Death Egg- some of the level design is SO weird and I never figured out how to enjoy it.
I keep switching my favorite classic game between mania and 3&k Like mania is just a better game gameplay wise and presentation wise and stuff but something about 3&k just makes me love it so much playing it is an experience it feels like a movie
The big rings are supposed to be an exploration reward, a way to know that you've mastered the levels. Obviously if you just look it up you're not gonna feel like you completed the game.
Pretty sure Sonic Team expected you to learn routes and have you go out of your way to find the bigs rings for a faster run next time, I feel like if the game showed you each ring it wouldn't feel as rewarding. Also funny story, for the big ring under the spikes at Flying battery, I found it cause my OLD genesis controller would get jammed sometimes and I happened to be near that area and saw the spikes moving then Sonic fell in it XD
To each their own, but I have a few tips on elevating your experience. 1. From the video, it seems like you have the original rom of Sonic 3&K, since it's the original 4:3 ratio. I suggest you get Sonic 3 AIR. It gives a lot of QoL features, and can make the game easier to digestsince you had a problem with the sheer length of the game. I can relate, it feels like Sonic burnout compared to the other classics. 2. The best way to find big rings is to run into walls. I'm not kidding. It worked for 3&K, it worked for Mania, and it worked for Superstars. Just run into walls and you'll find them. Trust me. 3. Try out some mods. I know it's kinda counter intuitive since its moving away from the vanilla game, but they definitely helped with Mania, Generations and Frontiers. There are lots of mods for Sonic 3&K. 4. Just take your time. Imma be real, this is one of the more slower paced Sonic games. Levels are more layered than the likes of Colors, 2 or Adventure. It's gonna take time. If the game is to long, don't play it like a shorter one. Take breaks between sessions and you'll be fine. Another great video, and I do agree that hyper sonic definitely makes it better. I hope my tips help you to love the game even more. Have a blessed day. ✌️
Yo thanks but I don’t have any way to play sonic 3 air since they took down the steam version of sonic 3. I’ll say for playing the game slowly, I get that of course, but I do really love games I can beat in one or two days. I feel like 3&K is just long enough that it’s kinda too long for one sitting, but is too short for two. I know it’s a shallow critique, but idk it takes the game down for me.
@@GDubA I'm sorry to say but you just ain't built for this typa game. 😔 But that's okay. You tried and gave it a fair chance. That's all that matters 😁👍🏾
@@GDubA You don't need the Steam version of Sonic 3 & Knuckles, you just need a rom, of which the Steam version is just a rom downloaded through Steam.
I recently completed all 4 classic Sonic Games in origins with all the Mcguffins and I gotta say, I SUCK at those special stages and the most daunting task for me was getting the super emeralds. I swear I was in Mushroom for 4 hours just trying to get the last 3. After that, yea, the game was a blast and turning into Hyper Amy was awesome! Definitely a great game with or without out the emeralds
Sonic 3 and knuckles is amazing game, sonic 2 is more fast paced tho, sonic cd is good only with jp soundtrack, and sonic 1 is good but outdated with the level design
amazing what actually using the games intended mechanics can actually do for the game as a whole. 🤣 Seriously though, you're one of the few people I've seen even mention the stage length disparity between 2 and 3; or even prefer shorter (+ replayable) games over unnecessarily long ones. Great video.
Yo thanks man. I’ve always just wanted shorter games that focus on playing them over again, it’s like the real fun starts once the credits roll almost for me.
@@GDubA if a game doesn't leave me wanting to go back, I probably won't go back. Replayability is the real value in a game, but instead we got gamers (derogatory) that insist on these grand 200+ hour experiences 😂
I like sonic 2 more overall still. I enjoy every level besides some bits in Hill Top, the screws in Metropolis and I dislike Wing Fortress. In sonic 3K I dislike Marble Garden 2, Carnival Night 2, Icecap 1, hate Flying Battery and Sandopolis, and Death Egg and Lava Reef are just alright I guess. It's easier for me to do a playthrough of sonic 2 but playing sonic 3K can be more of a chore. I do like replaying some acts though because the level design can be amazing. Launch Base and Mushroom Hill are in my top 5 classic zones, they're great.
Do you think sonic three is big at one point sonic two was going to have more than 22 zone but in the final game a bunch of levels got cut The two most popular levels hidden palace and Wood zone and at one point sonic two was going to have time travel
Sonic 3&K is pretty fun. It's not a game I'd put in my top 10 Sonic games or whatever, but it is definitely a good, fun game. Worth playing through at least once. And yeah, I totally feel your, "This game's way too long" critique. It's why I can't stand Heroes, 06, and Shadow. Those games are endurance tests.
I also prefer 1 and CD over 2 and 3. The extremely short levels is a big plus imo(I still like 2 and 3 tho!) Also, 2 and 3 are definitely better games overall. Its just that I always preferred CD and 1
That's why I always use a completed save when I replay this game so I don't have to get hyper sonic again, it's just more fun. Also I completely agree with the thing about the special stages, in 3&K most big rings are hidden behind invisible walls where no one would ever think to look, I felt Mania and Superstars really improved this
Hot take Sandopolis act 2 is better than emarald hill aquatic ruin wacky workbench wing fortess metropolis and better than any sonic 1 level also its better than mushroom hill the only game that beats this game for 2d is mania
The fact that you play the game by skipping all of the challenge makes me think that you just don’t like Sonic 3 & Knuckles. While I agree that Hyper Sonic is fun, playing as him makes the gameplay mindless.
I can be honest and say I like the game more when it's shorter and easier, but base game no super forms it's still fun, prob a solid 6.5/10. Hyper Sonic raises it to like an 8/10.
