Many counties in that state don’t have the same tax rate. Until every single state and county in those states employed the exact same tax rate, taxes can’t be added until you buy it.

It's because every state has their own rules on sales tax, and the tax rate can change. In Texas for example, the tax last time I checked was 8.25% of the item price, whereas at the same store in a different state it could be 9%. The same company is not going to save 50 different prices for the same exact item when they really only need 1. The issue here in the US is that the states can do whatever they want with sales tax, not that the price doesn't include the tax.

The second one came back and demanded a refund for charging them wrong. They were asking what the extra charge was from. Spent about a minute holding back a line to realize it was tax and tried explaining, before they became upset and asked, "WHY WAS I NOT INFORMED OF THIS BY YOU?" Was told it was my obligation to inform the consumer, asked for a refund (it was food, so it was just thrown out.) Last one did both of this, but did not leave as gracefully. Instead tried to punch a FEMALE coworker, fell on his wrist and then immediately awkwardly escaping. Later on we received a review complaining about our service.

If you have a problem with the tax take it up with the state. Are you purchasing? Or should I cancel the order?” She bought the food anyway

Here in the UK the price tags have the price with tax included so you don't have to do the work of calculating. Then the receipt shows you what percentage of the items were tax.
I did once have a customer that pulled the "No, I'm not paying (X-price), I'm paying (Y-price)" on me, I was like, "I won't be selling it to you unless you pay the actual price". She picked up a plate of salmon that was something like £3.50 and wanted it for the £1 price of the water bottle (which was clearly printed on the price labels of each) that was on the shelf below it.
This is so real, the prices of stuff went up at my job due to tax increases and I've had a handful of costumers be like "My total seems a bit high" so I told them it's due to tax increases which I don't have any control over. A few wanted to speak to the manager and he told them tye same exact thing

To be honest, in that case the customer is in the right, it's the american system that is utterly stupid. The price tag is the price you should pay, you don't put on "tax" or other added fees afterwards...

Here in the UK the price tags have the price with tax included so you don't have to do the work of calculating. Then the receipt shows you what percentage of the items were tax.
I did once have a customer that pulled the "No, I'm not paying (X-price), I'm paying (Y-price)" on me, I was like, "I won't be selling it to you unless you pay the actual price". She picked up a plate of salmon that was something like £3.50 and wanted it for the £1 price of the water bottle (which was clearly printed on the price labels of each) that was on the shelf below it.

This is so real, the prices of stuff went up at my job due to tax increases and I've had a handful of costumers be like "My total seems a bit high" so I told them it's due to tax increases which I don't have any control over. A few wanted to speak to the manager and he told them tye same exact thing
